Gov. Bill Lee and Jack Martin, Hockaday Brooms.
Untold Tennessee: Gov. Lee celebrated Hockaday Brooms on 225 Tour By Janet Rail Publisher
G
ov. Lee is ending his year long tour 225 Celebration in McNairy County sharing the personal histories that shape our state with a five generation broom maker Jack Martin of Hockaday Brooms. Gov. Lee explained “Untold Tennessee” to the small group of friends assembled. “You are a little more famous than most. The untold stories that people don't really know about about remarkable people that make up this state to make it the best state,” said Lee. “This is a really cool place. There are not a lot of people with your personality and your craft with your legacy and your history in this state, that is unique and is what makes Tennessee a really special place,” Lee said.

Martin shared that this was the 46th year that he has given brooms to first families in Tennessee and for him was a great honor to do so. Martin's great grandfather settled in McNairy County in 1876. His great grandmother, of the Wolfe family, was here before that as she was Native American. Martin plans to apply for a Century Farm in Tennessee. “We've been making brooms since the turn of the century, but it was a sideline as we were farmers first. The story of my family is that somewhere around 1903 there was an article about making brooms and making money. So my great granddad cut the picture out of the paper and built equipment out of scrap stuff we had laying around the farm. So that is how it started.”

Residents in McNairy County, 60 years of age and older, who live independently and walk independently (or with assistance from walkers or canes), but do not drive will be eligible to get transportation to a variety of destinations like medical appointments and grocery stores by volunteer drivers. The program has a goal of July 1 for a start date. MyRide TN is an expanding, sustainable, senior-friendly volunteer transportation service that has taken root in Tennessee. Volunteers are be-

f you love the smell of grilling, great steaks, ribs, baked beans, burgers and the fixings, you were in heaven on Saturday in Selmer City Park.
Over 86 entries competed in a competition sanctioned by the Steak Cookoff Association of Fort Worth, Texas, who sanctioned the BBQ cookoff. Carol Burdison, Steak Cookoff Association, of West Memphis, Arkansas, coordinated the event and judging Saturday. After many weeks of planning, the committee had a very successful event. They had a lot of help from Danny Montgomery, a World Champion BBQ master, and Christy Jones, who were instrumental in organizing the event and have much experience with SCA. The success was made possible by many volunteers, community sponsors and the support of the Steak Cookoff Association. Not too many years
ago, the Steak Cookoff Association was founded to seek the best cooks in neighborhoods – the king of the cul-de-sac. It is a family friendly type of cookoff that allows one to bring their backyard skills to life and win some pretty great prize money. The SCA Steak Cookoffs feature a $1,000 prize for first place and will typically pay the top 10 places in the steak category. Although their primary focus is steaks, BBQ competitions like the one in Selmer, featured ancillary categories: ribs, creative baked beans and burgers for the kids to compete. The grounds of the park were filled with cookers from eight states who competed in the contest in Selmer. Everyone was sharing how they

Winners in the Kids Burger Contest were 1st Place Nathan Anderson, 2nd Place Kinsey Ashecraft and 3rd Place Tyler Jones. Others who place in the top 10 were 4th Paxton Couch, 5th Brantley Mullins, 6th Cannon Traylor, 7th Eli Harris, 8th Sadie Burns, 9th Graysen Burns and 10th Carter

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Department of Commerce & Insurance (“TDCI”), the Tennessee Motor Vehicle Commission, the Tennessee Attorney General’s Office, and the Tennessee Department of Revenue are alerting consumers to problems related to the online purchase of vehicles in Tennessee. Vehicle sales by unlicensed companies are prohibited, even if the company only sells vehicles over the internet. Consumers have filed complaints indicating vehicles purchased through online sites, without being inspected or driven beforehand, arrived with damage not disclosed in online advertisements. And some buyers have experienced problems obtaining a clear title and registering vehicles purchased online. The licensing system administered by the Tennessee Motor Vehicle Commission is designed to promote responsible business practices and protect Tennessee consumers. Unfortunately, there are few remedies for frustrated consumers after purchasing a vehicle from an unlicensed seller who operates online and may not be located in Tennessee. “We understand the urgency some buyers feel while searching for used vehicles online,” said General Herbert H. Slatery III. “With increased demand comes increased risk of dealing with a dishonest broker. Take your time, check for a license before you buy.” “As we head into graduation season and summer vacation, shoppers will likely want a new vehicle for students to take to college or for family vacations,” said Motor Vehicle Commission Executive Director Denise Lawrence. “Unfortunately, we've discovered that some consumers are frustrated because they’ve given their hard-earned money to online salespeople who do not have either a valid Tennessee dealer’s or salesperson’s license. While it might be inconvenient to wait and buy a vehicle in person from
a licensed salesperson, consumers will be glad they waited in order to avoid the bitter aftertaste of a supposedly good deal.” It seems some dealers, in a rush to make quick sales, are offering cars before they have even acquired the title to vehicles. And this problematic practice is compounded by a prevalent tactic called “curbstoning,” when a dealership pretends to be a private seller. By curbstoning, a dealership attempts to avoid the regulations governing used car sales so that it can move inventory quickly. Consumers should be wary of any dealer who seeks to avoid the rules by curbstoning. If you want to ensure you are purchasing a vehicle from a licensed seller, visit verify.tn.gov P.O. Box 20207, Nashville, Tennessee 37202 www.tn.gov/attorneygeneral If you are experiencing an issue regarding a motor vehicle transaction may file a complaint with the Tennessee Motor Vehicle Commission or call (615) 7412711. Additionally, if a consumer believes a business, including a dealership, is engaged in deceptive practices, file a complaint with the Tennessee Attorney General’s Division of Consumer Affairs or call (615) 741-4737. Consumer complaints can be filed online at: https://www.tn.gov/attorneygeneral/working-for-tennessee/consumer/file-a-complaint.html The Tennessee Department of Revenue advises the following options for consumers who are not able to resolve title issues with a dealer: 1) The surety bond process, which the Department of Revenue handles, or 2) The certification of ownership process, which is done through the local county clerk. This questionnaire can help you determine what to do https://www. tn.gov/revenue/title-andregistration/vehicle-titling/what-to-do-ifyou-do-not-have-a-title.html

Untold Tennessee: Gov. Lee celebrated Hockaday Brooms on 225 Tour...................................................From page 1 His grandfather grew broomcorn in the summertime and made brooms in the wintertime when he couldn't farm. “It was always just a sideline until my wife “baby doll” came along. Her artistic ability and me just moving my hands, we were able to take an idea and twist it into a real business,” said Martin. After losing his wife, he continued to find a passion for making brooms. Martin makes his brooms and sells all over the country. I make a great tool that my customers love. It is crazy that ya'll are here. Since Ray Blanton was in office, Ray Blanton's wife came over to my office and said that the brooms in Nashville were no
good. She could not find a good broom nowhere. So she said, “Can I get Mr. Jack's brooms?” So, from that time, about 1975, I have been furnishing every first family with Hockaday Brooms,” said Martin. “And that's why we are here,” said Gov. Lee with laughter from the room. “We have been there three years, and haven't gotten our broom.” Martin showed his passion for broom making and shared five generations of stories on the family farm where making brooms continues today. After demonstrating his technique to Gov. Lee and First Lady Maria, everyone left happy with a broom, including his staff and se-

Lee and the First Lady Maria a gift basket of goodies from McNairy County. West TN Tourism Director of Tourist Development, Marty Marbry was also in attendance. Last year, Governor Bill Lee announced “Untold Tennessee” as the theme for a yearlong celebration commemorating 225 years of statehood. Tennesseans have attended events and activities in all 95 counties and submitted stories that showcase their area of the state.
The tour kicked off at the Bicentennial Mall in Nashville and the Blount Mansion in Knoxville on June 1, 2021, Tennessee's 225 Birthday. “Since 1796, Tennessee has been the portrait of perseverance, character and hope because of everyday heroes,” said Gov. Lee. “As we reflect on 225 years os statehood, I encourage Tennesseans to join us on the road and share their untold stories of people, places and events that have shaped our state since its beginning.” Many untold stories across the state were showcased over the year. You can visit Tennessee225.com and submit stories that showcase something special about the community. #TN225.

rience problems with access to food, healthcare, and even sociability. A lack of reliable transportation just adds to the issue. Seniors often do without and don't want to bother friends or loved ones. Many seniors in McNairy County get around using their own personal vehicles and when one reaches the point where they can no longer safely drive, that is a big problem and MyRide TN offers a solution. For more information email mayor@mcnairycountytn. com or call 731-645-3472. In McNairy County we are starting two programs. MyRide TN which is targeted for the elderly to take them to essential locations like the pharmacy, doctors visits and grocery stores. And a second program is My Ride Plus, for disabled veterans to go to VA Medical Clinics in Nashville or Memphis or area Veterans Clinics, for example in Tupelo, Miss. “We are just now starting the volunteer drivers recruitment piece. If someone wants to volunteer, call the Mayor's office and they will get a volunteer application and training can start if approved,” said Director Southwest Area on Aging and Disability, Shelly Hale.

ing assembled in McNairy County by a local committee who has just secured a grant for $98,000 and two new vehicles for MyRide TN in McNairy County. According to the County Mayor Larry Smith, he noted that two cars had been with Southwest for a year and no county had taken advantage of the cars. The county put a proposal together on how to make the program successful and presented it to Southwest. The county was rewarded the $98,000 grant and the two cars and will have a part-time coordinator with a MyRide Plus program. “We are the only county that invested in the program. McNairy County invested $34,519 toward the hiring of a part-time driver, benefits, insurance, vehicle maintenance and fuel for two years,” said Smith. Rides can be provided Monday – Friday with priority given to doctor appointments. All volunteers are screened, trained, coordinated and monitored to ensure safe service. Dare to Live Without Limits You Only Need One Reason to Succeed By Bryan Golden Contributor

hen striving to accomplish a goal, it’s easy to conjure up a long list of excuses as to why you can’t reach your objective. It is amazing how many excuses can be found in a short time. Although you may have dozens of excuses for failure, you only need one reason to succeed. Let’s look at some excuses and how to counter them. Excuse: I’m too old. You are never going to be as young as you are today. So, you may as well get started now. People of senior ages have finished a degree, started a new career, and made major changes to their life. Take ac-
tion today so you don’t regret not doing so tomorrow. Excuse: I don’t have enough talent. Everyone has strengths which should be fully utilized. Any weaknesses you have can be overcome through education, experience, and practice. There are people who possess the talents you need. They can be your partner or you can pay for the services of those with the necessary talent as needed. Excuse: I don’t know enough. You can either learn what you need or hire people who do have the knowledge you desire. There are more opportunities for learning today than at any time in history. Education is a lifelong endeavor. You can always
be expanding your knowledge. Excuse: I come from a poor background. History is replete with examples of highly successful people who started with nothing. Your desired destination is what matters. Your starting point is irrelevant. Excuse: I don’t have enough time. Everyone has the same amount of time each day. It’s up to you how to use it. You are productive when you are actively working towards a goal. You are active when you are busy with nothing to show for you efforts. The more productive you are, the more you will accomplish. Excuse: I know I can’t do it. If you believe you can’t, you are right. Conversely, if you be-

here is a song sung by Roger Whittaker entitled, The First Hello, The Last Goodbye wherein there is a line that says, “They say when you gain a lover You begin to lose a friend, That the end of the beginning’s The beginning of the end, They say the moment that you're born Is when you start to die..” There is truth in that line. When we are born we do not know how long we will live, but we may grow older, and will die. How do or will we measure our life? Some people do so by the people they left behind. Some people do so in faith. Some people by love, and others that life does not have any meaning at all. what we are leaving behind? Do we think about preparing for our existence beyond this physical life? I suspect that those facing their mortality do. Scripture says, “Inasmuch as it is awaiting us to die once, and after this judgment” (Hebrews 9:27) we should prepare for our farewell as well as those close to us that we love and esteem highly. We do not like to talk about our farewell, our death, but we should as it is normal and a date we all will meet. My father-in-law died several years ago and before he died with lung cancer that would shorten his life, he made elaborate detailed plans for that eventuality. We all should prepare for that date we all will keep. Relationships are vital as we are social creatures created for interaction and companionship. If there is a need repair relationships. Otherwise cherish and keep them close and current. ~ David. Hope to see you in grief support group this month.

t was just one of those things. It didn’t really mean Marvin Pincus had lost his mind. Consider this yourself for a minute. Marvin had opened the mail that morning and in it was the Fenwick glass fly rod he’d ordered. Oh, it was used, of course. But there’s a feel to a Fenwick that only a man dedicated to a life of using dry flies can appreciate. Marvin had broken his ankle the previous week and was temporarily in a wheelchair. It was his right ankle, so he couldn’t drive down to the creek. And there, in his hands, was the Fenwick. He put it together, attached a reel and some four-weight line and set
was achieved by an individual who ignored the naysayers. Your success is not dependent on what others say, think, or do. What matters is what you say, think, and do. it on the couch and looked at it. Marjorie was off visiting her sister, so she couldn’t help him. But there’s a pull, an irresistible draw to a fly rod. He had to cast it. Now. It took Marvin about 20 minutes to negotiate the front steps with that wheelchair and the Fenwick. Finally, he negotiated the sidewalk and then the edge of the street itself. Up came the Fenwick. A few swishes in the air told Marvin he’d done the right thing in ordering the rod. So he ran out some line and began casting. About halfway across the street was a large mulberry leaf. He did a double haul on the line and sent the fly toward the leaf. It took several tries before he hit it, but when he made
that cast, you could’ve sold tickets to it. His fly came to rest about three feet above the leaf and then fluttered gently down onto its target. Marvin’s smile said it all. Then the school bus came around the corner full of kids heading home, and Marvin realized he was casting a fly rod from a wheelchair onto dry pavement. “Hi Mr. Pincus!” yelled one of the kids. “Catch anything?” “A little slow today, Billy,” he yelled back. “Isn’t it hard to catch fish without water?” Billy yelled. “It’s okay, son,” Marvin said with a grin. “I’m using a dry fly!” Brought to you by Fenwick. https://www.purefishing.com/ pages/fenwick Feel everything.

L
inda Garner Rouse Hines, age 80, of Mountain Home, Arkansas, entered her heavenly home on April 20, 2022. Linda Mae Garner was born on February 23, 1942, in Masseyville, Tenn., the second child of Haven David Garner and Willie Albert Clayton Garner. After graduating from Bethel Springs High School in 1960, she married her sweetheart, Bill Rouse, and made a life with their four children, Sherry, Jackie, Cindy, and Barry in Memphis. Linda was an adored beautician for 49 years, making ladies look their best and at the same time, providing much comic relief for them while they were in the chair. Her clients always showered her with gifts, and stayed in touch with her throughout their life, even after Linda’s retirement. Any friend that she made became a lifelong friend. She was a pleasure to be around and the kind of friend everyone wants to have and keep. Linda loved a bargain and frequented as many yard sales as possible on Saturdays. Her home was a treasure trove of oddities, Elvis memorabilia, and hundreds of cookbooks. She spent 25 years traveling the world with her love, Joe Venezia, who passed away in 2019. Together they visited almost every National Park in the United States and several foreign countries. The epitome of a southern belle, Linda was graceful, compassionate, friendly, loyal, faithful, gentle, courageous, gracious, honest, compassionate, responsible, and most of all, joyful. Friend, family, or stranger, Linda had a smile and a funny tale for
anyone who would listen. She was the best verbal storyteller, an art lost to text and email. In addition to her husband Bill, Linda was predeceased by her parents, Haven and Willie Albert Garner, a daughter Sherry Yvonne Rouse, two sons Jackie Allen Rouse and Barry Nelson Rouse, a brother, Ralph Douglas Garner, and a sister-inlaw, Phyllis Garner. She is survived by a daughter, Cindy Gaye Reese (Paul), grandchildren Jon Paul Reese and Victoria Christina Reese, all of Jordan, AR, a daughter Robin Jones (Jason) and their sons Cameron and Cooper, of Jacksonville, Fla., step-children Robert Hines (Lisa), Ricky Hines (Melanie), and Rhonda Shewell (Myron), a sister Lettie Garner Hines (Douglas) of Selmer, brothers Michael Garner (Judy) of Paris, Phillip Garner of Finger, and Dwight Garner (Barbara) of Finger. She leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews, all of whom shared a special relationship with her. Linda came from a long line of strong women, and her resilience was to be admired. She remained steadfast in her faith in Jesus Christ throughout her life, in the face of much loss and hardship. The life that she lived has impacted all who knew her in a positive way. Her legacy will live on in the stories that she told, the smiles that she shared, and the joy that she exhibited every day. Cattle producers continue to feel the pinch as food inflation climbs By Jai Templeton Contributor
I
n a repeat of earlier reports grocery prices are up a whopping 5.5% which is the highest annual increase since 2008. Meat particularly beef has seen an increase of 6%. That increase is double the normal 2.9% annual increase. A recent report indicates that future prices for May feeder cattle have fallen with a forecast of a continued slump into summer. As consumers continue to see their cost of food soaring cattle producers are seeing prices fall. It is ironic that the blame for the slumping cattle prices are due to higher harvest rates. The cool and wet weather has also played a significant part as the spring grilling season has reportedly decreased demand for meat. Industry reports a record number of cattle are currently on feed.
The 12 million feeders are up almost 2% since last year. Normally, increased supply would be considered a positive for consumers. However, supply chain disruptions and a continued strong demand for beef appears to continue to bring sticker shock at the grocery store. For cattle producers profit margins appear to remain tight if they exist at all. Record cost of fertilizer and feed compounded by weak cattle prices are squeezing the Tennessee cattle producer. Beef production has long been one of the top three agricultural commodities produced in TN with a majority of TN farms being cattle producers. Fertilizer costs are in excess of $100 per acre for hay and pasture land. Escalating input cost as well as the competition for land is a potential danger for the local cattle industry. Any production decrease will come at the consumer's expense.

Coronavirus Updates
M
ore than half the U.S. Population has been infected with coronavirus at least once since the beginning of the pandemic, according to federal health officials. In Tennessee, 2,030,608 have been confirmed as infected with 26,166 recorded deaths compared to 81,444,332 for the U.S. With 993,999 deaths reported to date. The majority of cases have likely been asymptomatic or with few symptoms. Before the omicron virus, one third of Americans had already been infected with the virus. Virus rates continued to increase to 60 percent in late February with three out of four children infected. Experts state that blood samples taken across the country do not show long lasting protection against the virus, especially the variants with such transmissible rates that evade antibodies. In Tennessee, 3.7 million (54.5%) are now fully vaccinated as U.S. health officials have authorized a second booster shot for people over age 50 or immunocompromised people over age 12 if it has been four months since the first booster, however they are not explicitly recommending it. As we have seen drops in local virus rates, Anthony Fauci, chief medical advisor, said that the United States has
emerged out of the full blown explosive pandemic phase after more than two years and 1 million deaths. The pandemic is not over, according to authorities, but not causing the levels of hospitalizations and death recorded in early phases. For now, we all must learn to live with the virus and anticipate more variants as the virus mutates.

Stories abound regarding Tennessee’s western boundary By Bill Carey
T
here’s a story behind every boundary – why it’s here and not over there, why it shifts this way and then that way.
Take Tennessee’s western border, for instance. Many people assume that Tennessee’s western boundary is the Mississippi River, but they are wrong. Over the years, the river has moved, causing confusion about where the border is. According to the U.S. Supreme Court, the western border of Tennessee cannot be moved because of the movement of the river. Therefore, Tennessee’s boundary with Arkansas lies where the channel of the Mississippi River was in 1836, when Arkansas became a state. Tennessee’s boundary with Missouri is where the river was when Missouri became a state in 1821. Because of this rather unusual situation, there are many stories and legends about places where the Mississippi River has moved, but the border has not. The best source of this material is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ book called Historic Names and Places of the Lower Mississippi River by Marion Bragg. I’ll start in Tennessee’s northwest corner and work my way south. Kentucky Bend is a part of Fulton County, Kentucky, surrounded on

three sides by the Mississippi River and one side by Lake County, Tennessee. Few people live there today. Mark Twain, in his book Life on the Mississippi, described a feud between two families who lived there and attended the same church. “Half the church and half the aisle was in Kentucky, the other half in Tennessee,” he wrote. “Sundays you’d see the families drive up, all in their Sunday clothes, men, women, and children, and fill up the aisle, and set down, quiet and orderly, one lot on the Tennessee side of the church and the other on the Kentucky side.” Moving downstream, the Lake County seat of Tiptonville used to be
the point were enough to frighten a timid flatboatman half to death,” Bragg wrote. Over the years, the Army Corps of Engineers made Plum Point safe for boats. Just downstream from Plum Point was a Confederate fort called Fort Pillow. As any Civil War buff will tell you, Fort Pillow fell to Confederate cavalry led by Nathan Bedford Forrest in April 1864, in one of the Civil War’s most controversial battles (that’s another column). Since then, the river has moved so much that you can hardly see it from Fort Pillow State Historic Park today. Continuing southward, the Mississippi River passes the former site of the town of Randolph.
along the river, but the river has moved. Now Tiptonville is more than a mile from the river. Shifting south, there was a busy river town called Ashport in Lauderdale County with “several small warehouses and a big steam-powered sawmill,” Bragg wrote. However, the river eventually washed away most of the original 200-acre town. Downstream and around the bend from Ashport is Plum Point, once one of the most dangerous places on the Mississippi. “A multitude of snags, half-concealed tree trunks, and sandbars gave even the most adventurous pilot cold chills, and the currents that foamed around
Once a rival to Memphis, Randolph declined because of (among other things) a shift in the river current. Once big enough to have hotels and a newspaper, Randolph now consists of a few houses and a historic marker. Just downstream and across the river from the former site of Randolph is the community of Reverie. Due to the movement of the river, this Tipton County town has the distinction of being the most populous Tennessee community on the west side of the Mississippi River. (However, let’s to put this in context: Wikipedia claims that in 2001, Reverie’s population was 11. So we can safe-
ly say that Reverie’s status as the only Tennessee community on the wrong side of the river has not proven to be an economic boon.) Continuing southward, there are many places in Tipton and Shelby counties where the river has straightened itself over the years, leaving much Tennessee land west of the river. One of these places is Centennial Cutoff, where the river made the shift during a single day in the year 1876. Centennial Cutoff removed a bend in the river called “Devil’s Elbow” and created a new island known as Island 37. Because of confusion about which state owned the island, it became a harbor for lawbreakers, which is why the Arkansas militia raided it in July 1915. That raid led to one of the U.S. Supreme Court decisions regarding the location of the border. In the 1918 case known as State of Arkansas v. State of Tennessee, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the piece of land then known as Island 37 was still part of Tennessee. Today the river has completely shifted to the east side of what was once known as Island 37, and the land is attached to the Arkansas side but still part of Tennessee. Ten MCHS Seniors have passed the exam to earn the title Patient Care Technician. The students took an exam that tested their knowledge of basic patient care, including such skills as blood pressure, venipuncture, collecting lab specimens, changing dressings, and discontinuing an IV, among other skills. Though the test it-
self is written or ‘book’ knowledge only, nursing instructor Debra Hurst requires the students to demonstrate the actual skills in her class before she allows them to take the test. Students must score at least 86% to pass the exam, which is 100 questions over a 120 minute testing period. Students with this certification can find employment in hospi-
tals and doctor’s offices, and expect to earn at least $15 per hour with their skill set. Those seniors who passed the exam are Deja Barnett, Megan Churchwell, Matthew Cosby, Kearsten Edge, Marissa Harrison, Lyndsey McCalvin, Nathaniel Overman, Leah Stanfield, Deja Weekly, and Emma Whitten.
