Corporal Hayden Harris Memorial dedication ceremony bonds two townships forever By JANET RAIL Publisher

T

he death of a soldier has forever merged two townships together. A tragedy that is far-reaching has resulted in the development of the Corporal Hayden Harris Athletic Complex at McNairy Central High School. In a ceremony held on Friday, April 22, together with family and friends, leaders from McNairy County and Byram Township, honored the memory of Harris who exemplified a young man striving to do his best, working with others to accomplish common goals. The tragedy amplifies our sense of community as a committee formed and townships bonded, when his life touched us all and resulted in a memorial project that will forever be a reminder of his contribution to community and country #LifeYourLifeWithoutFear. “This complex is not about Hayden as the baseball player, as much as it was about

port for the Harris family is moving. The memorial ceremony began with the National Anthem performed by the MCHS Band Saxophone Quartet followed by the Presentation of Colors by SPC Braden Rickman. Team Hayden committee chair Ricky Whitaker presided over the event and presentation of honoraries. “This occasion is made possible by a group of people moved to honor a very special person. The Team Hayden Committee members are Brian Franks, Lisa Forsythe, Bardley Gray, Amber Leonard, Joe Dan Maness, James Merry, Wes Moore, Dr. Jerry Pyron and Chris Whitten,” said Whitaker. “Hayden Harris was the type of person we all want our kids to grow up to be like. He touched the lives of

Hayden the person. He wanted to be the best person he could be and wanted you to be the best person you could be. Our hope is that encompasses every student, every parent, every coach and visitor that comes through this gate. You hope they have that same attitude,” said Team Hayden team member Chris Whitten. This wasn't the first time the two townships bonded. The first was during the celebration of life for Harris in Guys following his tragic death and the second this week with another formal affair. The officers from New Jersey have found lifelong friends in McNairy County. Tragedy makes us realize how precious friends and family are and the outpouring of sup-

countless people in his short time and continues to be an inspiration to those who know his story. Throughout his life Hayden was respected and loved because of his genuine love for others and being a friend to everyone.” Hayden was proud of his service to his country in the Arms and today we get to show him how proud we are of the young man he became.” Whitaker continued stating there are things that happen in life that bring people together for a common goal. I, along with the committee, have been blessed to be part of recognizing Hayden and the legacy he provided for our students, athletes and community to follow.” The community was overwhelming in their support of this effort. Some were large donations and some like the last pennies out of a mother's mini-van at a roadside event. County Mayor Larry Smith read and presented a proclamation to Chief Todd Tudloff, Byram Township, making them honorary citizens. See CORPORAL HAYDEN, 2

Corporal Hayden Harris Memorial dedication ceremony bonds two townships forever.............................................................................................................................From page 1 Whereas Corporal Harris's life was cut short in December 2020 and whereas Corporal Harris's body was recovered and lovingly and compassionately cared for by Byram Township, New Jersey, like one of their own. On December 19, 2020, McNairy County and Byram Township forever became united. The mayor, county commission and residents hereby proclaim that in gratitude of the love, compassion and care bestowed recognize the citizens of Byram Township as honorary citizens of McNairy County. The proclamation was affixed with two coins celebrating the 198th birthday of McNairy County in the frame and a county flag. Selmer Mayor Sherry Inman presented a key to the city to Fire Chief Rudloff in honor of Harris. “It is an honor to be here. The Town of Selmer presents this key to the Byram Township Fire Department with the Town of Selmer key mounted on it,” said Inman. Guys Alderman Chris Howard, recognized the parents of Hayden, Reg-

gie and Christy Harris and his sister Courtney. “Thank you for raising such a fine young man and I think it is a testament to their parenting.” Howard shared how the Byram Township became special during the tragedy. “When they stumbled upon Hayden's body, they knew he was something special as a son and a soldier. They went back to their fire department and they got a flag and wrapped him in that flag and for that we honor them today as they become part of our fire department and honorary citizens of Guys by the mayor and board of alderman for going above and beyond the call of duty to bring one of ours home,” said Howard. Sheriff Guy Buck made a presentation to the Byram Police Department. “We always hope and pray if a terrible crime happens to us or our family, that the officers that respond and tasked with the investigation will be professional, trained and competent, but more importantly treat the victim as one of their family.” A terrible crime happened to

At home it stated how Harris brought honor to himself and to McNairy Central High School on the golf course, baseball field, and in the classroom and will be remembered not only for his athletic accomplishments but his gentlemanly conduct and friendly personality. This proclamation will forever be displayed at the complex gate. The Harris family approached the podium. roommate reported him missing after Harris did not return from a trip to Watertown, New York, for a “vehicle exchange,” according to First Assist Sussex County Prosecutor Gregory Mueller. The exchange was with a fellow soldier who was charged in relation to his death. It is a most unfortunate life lost too soon and one that will stand forever in the hearts and minds of our community. Due to the efforts of many who made a memorial at the McNairy Central High School athletic complex a possibility, the 2018 graduate of McNairy Central, was honored in a dedication ceremony officially opening the new athletic complex. Harris was known for his infectious smile, sincere heart, and love for people. After graduation, he chose to serve his country by joining the United States Army. He was a member of the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, New York and was looking forward to beginning sniper training in January of 2021 when his life was tragically cut short.

A life worth living, bringing joy to ones we serve

Shirley is squeezed in with her daughter, daughter-in-law, five grandchildren with spouses, eight great-grandsons, and two great-granddaughters all together at “Nana's” this past Christmas.

S

ometimes love shows itself through the people we care for and serve. As we age, many feel that they have little to contribute to others, but that is not the case for Shirley Cupples. How we measure those who live beautifully is how they touch us personally. At age 86, and diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis, it would be normal for Shirley to be on the receiving end of a good Samaritan story but as you will see, she does not follow the norm. Given her heartfelt love for all people, whether strangers or family and her conscious oath to put feet to her Christian faith, she was nominated as the good Samaritan. Widowed in 2016, after 60 years of marriage to William Ell Cupples, she became determined to fight her loneliness and continue day to day purposeful living. Typical weekly activities for Shirley is what could be called whole-hearted living. Age has no barrier as her resilience and well-being is not in question. If she has any ail-

ments, she must ignore them while doing for others. In fact, that may be her secret. You may find her doing many things in a days time. She can often be seen driving her white van all over running errands or cooking for others. If you haven't been lucky enough to have her cooking, well, you are missing out. She cooks for sick and/or shut-ins, the guys at Henry Furniture where Ell worked, a church meeting, a birthday, or “just because.” Driving her buddies to and from their doctor appointments in Corinth or Jackson or helping her brother, Bobby, with cleaning, cooking, shopping, or anything he mentions is done. Singing and worshipping at Union Grove United Methodist Church or searching garage sales for perfect items that someone mentioned they needed. If not needed, she may just take the rest of her “finds” to her market booths in Corinth or Henderson where she sells her antiques, jewelry and wares. Yes, in

two different cities. She gets around and even helps her fellow booth renters with their finds. Intentionally meeting new people and finding time to investigate and listen to their life stories is nothing new or visiting anyone that she thinks about that might be lonely or saddened by life and helping them to find a “silver lining.” Often she calls to check in on whoever’s name went through her mind for whatever reason. But most of all she loves providing her family with love, support, home cooking, baby-sitting and more. You may know “Miss Shirley” from Selmer Elementary School where she retired as the school secretary taking care of a multitude of cuts, scrapes, and sore throats. You may know her from “West Court Choices”, her dress shop where her definition of “retail therapy” meant come shop, talk, visit, and have a piece of pie or tea cake. You may know her because you knew her children, Jeff Cupples (deceased) and Sandy Cupples Parimore. And if you don’t know her, there is still a chance you will meet in a grocery line: she will be the one asking you all the questions. Love encourages her to seize the day for higher purposes. It doesn't matter to her what the purpose is. A good Samaritan has work to do.

We have had a few questions about the beans. If you have never cooked in ancillary before, One must have six individual portions that are identical for each judge, no glass in the box, your garnish can be in the box, must be edible. The team is not providing containers for the beans. That allows one to be creative with presentation,” said Christy Jones. “No garnish in your box for ribs, we are just judging your ribs”, said

Montgomery, it's a pretty good payout for the winner of the ribs. “With your steaks just cook it the best you can and hope for the best,” he said. There is a lot going on. The division will consider the nature, scale and effects of proposed impacts. The Division will consider practicable alternatives to the alteration, loss of waters or habitat, diminishment in biological diversity, cumulative or secondary impacts to the water resource, and adverse impacts to unique, high quality, or impaired waters. A parent’s guide to talking with kids about the Ukraine war By BUCK RYAN

I

feel the need to begin with a trigger warning. Nothing too traumatic, just the foul mouth of a teenager. Here’s what one of my former star journalism students, now a mom, posted on Facebook: Quote from my 8th grader (who asked to listen to NPR on the drive to school to follow news from Ukraine): “I feel like I might be happier now if I was an ill-informed dummy.” I feel the kid’s pain, not to mention the anxiety of any parent with smart children curious about such a sad and horrific topic that seems impossible to ignore. So how should parents talk with their kids about the Ukraine war? Are there valuable lessons that can be learned from what seems like a senseless conflict? For an answer to the first question, I turn to Dr. David Schonfeld, of the American Academy of Pediatrics Council on Children and Disasters, who wrote a h e l p ful article, “How to Talk With Your Child About the War in Ukraine,” for healthychildren. org.

You know your child best, especially at what age such a discussion is appropriate. Here are some excerpts from Dr. Schonfeld’s article: *Start by asking your child what they already know. Listen for misunderstandings or frightening rumors. Acknowledge that even adults don’t know all that is going on. *Ask them directly about their worries, respond with honest reassurance and don't discount their fears. *Limit the exposure of media coverage, especially repetitive graphic images, and discussion in social media. As a side note, I remember from the September 11thdays, the video of planes hitting the twin towers, shown again and again, registered in a child’s mind as repeat attacks still going on. Kids’ brains just don’t process the world the same ways as adults. *Know that some children will feel the impact more than others, putting them at greater risk of distress, and may need more help coping. *Consider joining a charitable initiative as a family project. Once children start to feel safe and understand what is

going on, many will want to help. *Don't worry about knowing the perfect thing to say. What children need most is to have someone they trust listen to their questions, accept their feelings and be there for them. For an answer to the second question about valuable lessons that might be learned, I turn to a series of quotations: “The first casualty of war is truth.” This is a great opportunity to teach kids that what they hear—even what they see—may or may not be true. The more emotional, the more outrageous, the more something should be closely examined. If there is a knee-jerk reaction, let it be these questions: “Is it true?” and “How do we know?” “God created war so that Americans would learn geography.” That gem from Mark Twain’s “The Innocents Abroad” (1869) is the perfect prompt to break out a world map to study with kids. There’s no telling what you might discover, like for me Kaliningrad, that orphaned piece of seaside Russia sitting beneath Lithuania

and atop Poland. “History is a set of lies that people have agreed upon.” We can thank Napoleon for that one. When Napoleon went down in the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, one of the six countries battling him was the Kingdom of Prussia. Check out a map of that kingdom within the German Empire, between 1871 and 1918, and you’ll find the ancestors of several nations currently wrapped up in the Ukraine conflict. Whether Ukraine is the Russian president’s Waterloo, only time will tell. But the next time you hear Vladimir Putin or anyone else talk about the “history of Ukraine,” ask, “What year are you talking about?” “He who tied the bell to the tiger must take it off.” That’s one of two Chinese proverbs that China’s president, Xi Jinping, quoted for President Biden in their twohour phone call about the Ukraine conflict. The saying can be traced back eight centuries or so to a Song Dynasty poet, Huihong, who wrote a collection of Buddhist teachings. Translation: Those who created the problem should be the ones to undo it. The other proverb was, “It takes two hands to clap.” Students in language

arts class might have fun “speaking Chinese” by being challenged to express their thoughts metaphorically. High school seniors in AP History class can explore China’s reluctance to get involved. “Promises and piecrusts are made to be broken.” When satirist Jonathan Swift popularized the expression with his dry Irish wit in his 1738 book, “Polite Conversation,” he created a great debate point for kids about the importance of keeping promises and the dangers of breaking them. The debate over the origins of the Ukraine war is rife with howls of the aggrieved, from Ukraine on security promises in the 1994 Budapest Memorandum when it turned over its nuclear weapons to claims that in negotiating a 1990 treaty to reunify Germany U.S. Secretary of State James Baker told the Soviet Union’s leader, Mikhail Gorbachev, that NATO would “not shift 1 inch eastward.” “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” If you were a lover of “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood,” you might recognize that advice from Fred Rogers’ mother. Or more fully:

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news,” Rogers said, “my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’” The PBS program “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” began amid the bloody turmoil of 1968, which I never thought this country would survive, and ended in the year of September 11th, 2001, when I had my own little kids at home. If you are a parent with young children, or a schoolteacher with loving children seeking your counsel, I hope this article helps you in some way. To the “trigger warning” 8th grader who wanted to tune into the news on the way to school, God bless you. I admire your civic interest in what’s happening in the world today—and fully support your desire just to be a kid with your own problems to solve. About the author Buck Ryan, a journalism professor and director of the Citizen Kentucky Project of the Scripps Howard First Amendment Center at the University of Kentucky, can be reached at buck.ryan@uky.edu.

Fred Rogers, whose mother advised him to “look for the helpers” when he saw scary news as a kid, brought “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” to Moscow in 1987.

Marathon in a Month By SCHANCEY S. CHAPMAN Family and Consumer Science Agent III UT Extension - McNairy County Have you always wanted to participate in a marathon, but just knew you couldn’t do all that in one day? Well, what about doing it in 31 days!? So what are you waiting for? What better time than now to complete a marathon. No, not 26.2 miles in one day! You will accumulate miles during the whole month of May. That's less than a mile a day! If you don’t think you can do a whole marathon you can also sign up for a half marathon (13.1 miles)
