Veto likely on board’s police hire By Jeff Whitten Head News Writer

The Selmer Board of Aldermen voted to hire Michael Gilbert as a part-time police officer on a 90-day probation basis. All of the members of the board voted for this, except Tull, who abstained. Mayor David Robinson argued that Gilbert should go through the interview process, but John Smith said that was not the case for part-time officers. The board’s attempt to hire Gilbert in 2011 was vetoed by Robinson who said “Any reasonable attempt at due diligence, prior to this action, would have revealed that one of the proposed candidates was terminated by the Selmer Police Department less than a year ago, on September 17, 2010.” The Mayor was referring to Gilbert, who was arrested for domestic assault in September 2010. (It should be noted that all charges relating to that inci-

dent were later dismissed.) Sources at Selmer City Hall have said that Robinson is expected to veto Gilbert’s latest hiring as well. Smith said that the city budgets $5,000 for over time pay for police. Robinson replied that the city was under budget for patrolmen. Chief of Police Neal Burks said the department is at full strength, except for Jeremy Wilson, who is on administrative leave. He has been on leave since being charged with domestic assault in Chester County on Jan. 6. The board tabled the reappointment of Carol Ann Woods, Harry Smith and Robert Shackelford to the Selmer/McNairy County Industrial Board for a six-year term. The vote to table the reappointment was 3-2, with John Smith, Paul Simpson and Edward Smith voting yes. John Finlayson and Chris Tull voted no. The McNairy County Commission had voted to reappoint them at their meeting on Jan. 10. “All of those members who are up for appoint-

ment have been faithful in their attendance, they’ve had a great deal to contribute to our meetings,” Shackelford told the board. Robinson noted that the Executive Committee of the Joint Economic Development Board unanimously recommended that these members be reappointed. Norman R. Sheffield appeared before the board to speak on the topic of naming city parks, streets and public places. He charged that the naming of the Dixie Park was done in a cloak of secrecy without listening to citizens. “My question is: what are the guidelines, procedures, practices and Selmer City Ordinances for the naming of public places?” he asked. Mayor David Robinson replied that there are no

Officers crack burglary ring Where in McNairy By Jeff Whitten Head News Writer

Sometimes when you are looking for one thing you find another. This was the case when officers from the McNairy and Hardin County Sheriff’s Departments were looking for burglary suspect Terrance A. Carder and found the fruits of a burglary ring operating in two states and four counCARDER ties. “We showed up looking for our bad guy,” McNairy County Sheriff Guy Buck said. “We had received a tip that he was staying at a residence in Saltillo and then the Sheriff went over there in an undercover vehicle,” said McNairy County Sheriff’s Department Investigator Brad Johnson. The tip did not give the department a full address, just a description of the residence, Johnson said. “Once we got there, we had a guy come out on us from the house and he acted real suspicious and there was a vehicle matching a description from Chester County at the residence,” Johnson said.

Buck and Johnson, who were in an undercover car, went down the road and the man tried to catch them in a four-wheeler and get their license number. The two officers had called other officers to the scene and another car left that matched a description of a car sought by Alcorn County, Miss. authorities in connection with a burglary. A vehicle matching the description of Carder’s then turned into the driveway of the house. Then Buck and Johnson went and secured the house. The residents were on searchable probation, meaning they had consented to search as a condition of their probation, according to Buck. “Then from there, we figured out we had a bunch of stolen stuff inside the residence. The guy that owned the residence, we had arrested him for meth a few months back,” Johnson said. By this time, other officers had arrived. “We just started calling different counties that we had received reports from,” Johnson said. One of Carder’s acquaintances, Donna Wilbanks’ daughter was living in the residence with John Cline. Carder went there with her to see her daughter a couple of days before, according to McNairy County Sheriff’s Department Investigator Robert Hitchborn. “We still haven’t linked him (Carder) to anything that was stolen there, he was just there a few days before. It was sort of by coincidence, it just sort of came about,” Johnson explained.

Expert weighs in on big cat sightings By Christen Coulon Editor

Following our story in Volume 107, Issue 31 published on Dec. 21, 2011 relaying a possible “black panther” sighting in the area, the Independent Appeal has received numerous reports of a large cat prowling the fields and forests of McNairy County. However, despite a $100 reward offered by our publication for photographic or physical evidence on the presence of a large cat in the county, no hard evidence has surfaced as of yet. Further research into this area has revealed that

the territory of large cats, specifically cougars, in North America is expanding eastward but there is little or no hard evidence to support that these animals have made their way into Tennessee. According to the Cougar Network, a nonprofit research organization dedicated to studying cougar-habitat relationships and the role of cougars in ecosystems, cougar populations now appear to be expanding from rugged, undeveloped areas into more human-dominated landscapes. Since 1990, increasing cougar presence has been especially evident in the Midwest. Cougar sightings, tracks, feces, and vehicle or hunter caused mortalities have been

confirmed by wildlife biologists in several Midwestern states. Cougars have been expanding out from the Black Hills in South Dakota and there have been numerous confirmed sightings of young males in Missouri, said Chad Harden of the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency. There have even been accounts of expansion into other states as far east as Connecticut. Generally, these animals are young males who leave their group upon reaching maturity. Harden said that there have been no confirmed

As reported earlier in the Independent Appeal, the Bethel Springs Board of Aldermen elected Lew Perrigo to fill the term of Sherri Payne, who resigned two months ago. Perrigo is 53 and was raised in the grocery store business. He served three years in the Army. Soon after leaving the armed forces, he met and married Wanda Agnew, the daughter of Jack and Rachel Agnew, of Bethel Springs. He owned and operated Perrigo’s Pizza for 11 years. Perrigo was employed in the auto body repair business for six years. In 2001, Perrigo returned to college to finish his undergraduate degree. After that, he earned a master’s degree and graduated with honors in 2005. He worked part-time as a business instructor at Jackson State Community College. Perrigo also worked at the McNairy County Airport during this time, rising to the position of Interim Manager. Perrigo has served 15 years as a leader in the churches he has attended. He served as a Jr. Warden (Vise Board Leader) with St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. While he was in this position, he completed course work to become a Layperson, Licensed Layreader and Licensed Eucharistic Minister. In addition, he has served both as a board leader and spiritual leader at St. Paul’s. “My many years of leadership have taught me two valuable lessons. The first and most difficult task is to gain the trust and confidence of the people you are serving with or serving for. The second task is to become a successful problem solver and you will soon gain the trust and confidence of those you are serving with or serving for. It is my desire to employ these lessons and my leadership philosophy to serve the residents of Bethel Springs. I believe I am capable of recognizing problems and then help with crafting plans to solve these problems. Remember, those who fail to plan are planning to fail. As a wise college professor once said, ‘If you don’t know where you are going, any road will get you there,’” he said. When asked what he would do about the high water bills in Bethel, Perrigo said, “The damage is done. Someone spent $4 million and it will have to be paid back.” Perrigo said that he will be constantly trying to find ways to reduce Bethel Springs’ water bills. “I’m sure it will be a top priority for the board,” he said.

Airport seeks funding for repaving project Board nixes slum ordinance By Christen Coulon

By Jeff Whitten

Tull said that during the project about 2/3 of the existing runway will need to be ground up and removed. “They have to grind up the part of the runway that is bad and then they will redo the sub-base and make sure it meets compaction standards and then they will do a bed up to the point of the old asphault,” Tull said. “Then they will lay a fabric mesh over the entire runway and pave over the top of that again and that will tie it all together.” Tull is hoping to obtain portions of the local matching funds for the repaving from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development and the local county government. He also said that the airport itself would likely provide a Staff Photo by Rodney Murray portion of the funding for the project. McNairy County’s Robert Sibley Airport is hoping to begin a long overdue airport repaving project sometime in the near future. The project’s cost is estimated at $1.3 million by the engineering firm Askew Hargraves Harcourt and Associates, Inc. There is state and federal money available to cover 90 percent of the cost and the remaining $130,000 of the funding will have to be matched locally. “We have got to go (to) the Tennessee Aeronautics Commission and request the money for this,” said Chris Tull manager of the airport. “We have what the state refers to as asphalt failure. The airport is still usable at this point, but it needs attention.” Tull explained that the runway sees heavy breaking all the time and it also sees the point of touchdown where the wheels impact the runway. Anytime you land 50,000 or 60,000 pound aircraft or even smaller aircraft that weigh almost 11,000 pounds, that eats up asphalt. “We don’t drive on highways that are 35 years old,” Tull said. “Its getting to point that the repairs would cost more than the matching funds (for repaving).” Compared to highways which don’t see vehicles traveling 160 mph or vehicles weighing in excess of 11,000 lbs doing heavy breaking, the runway takes a lot of punishment. Tull said that the runways are overbuilt compared to highways because of the speed, breaking and weight are spread between three points of contact on a runway where as on a highway you have at least four points of contact and up to 18 points of contact for the heavy vehicles.

The Adamsville City Commission deferred the utility policy changes except for ending the practice of sending red cards. Red cards are a second bill sent to customers five days before their utilities are cut off when they do not pay their bills. These bills are known as red cards because they are printed in red ink. The rest of the utility policy changes were deferred so that City Administrator Steve Simon could do further work on them, particularly on the issue of grinder pumps. Mayor David Leckner expressed a preference that the package all be voted on together if possible. The slum clearance ordinance was voted down 3-2, on second reading, with Mayor David Leckner and Commissioner Matt Wood and Commissioners Frank Lacey, Mark Massey and Tommy Morris voting no. The ordinance would have allowed the Codes Enforcement Officer to issue tickets and hold hearings. Morris objected that the city had too many rules and regulations. “We don’t need any more ordinances. There used to be a song ‘Signs, Signs, Signs’, well we have rules, rules, rules,” he said. “We are just rewording the old ones,” Leckner said. Lacey objected that the ordinance gave the officer too much power. “We are giving him too much power, here,” Lacey said. “I am 100 percent in favor of this. The only thing we have that is changing is the process,” Leckner argued. The commission unanimously approved the delinquent property tax

ordinance, on second reading. This ordinance allows the City Attorney to sue in Chancery Court to collect delinquent property taxes for all years prior to 2010. City ordinance already allows such suits for years subsequent to 2010. This ordinance now becomes law. Leckner announced that the recycling program is getting kicked off and they are working on route logistics. The commission voted to pull $25,000 of the cemetery fund from the general fund, so that if could be spent for its proper purpose as needed. The entire cemetary fund is $53,000. The commission also voted to appropriate $1,500 to sponsor the CSS Hunley, which was the first submarine to sink an enemy ship in wartime. Half of the money will come from the Buford Pusser Home and Museum fund and half from the general fund. Morris and a member of the audience questioned why the McNairy Regional Alliance banquet is usually held at Pickwick instead of McNairy County. Renee Moss, who is on the board, said that they have had it in the county before, but the only place that could accommodate the 300 people who attend is McNairy Central High School. MRA has had a problem scheduling the banquet there because of conflicts with basketball games. In response to a question about the Garan building, Leckner said that it went dark in order to reduce costs, but that the city was still trying to rent the building. The city is working to bring about the cleanup of the Saw Meal, but is waiting on the insurance companies, Simon said. Some cleanup has already been done on some buildings, but more needs to be done, he said.

INDEPENDENT APPEAL v PAGE 3A

Empowering individuals through education By Janet Rail Publisher

The McNairy County Literacy Council is striving to lessen the educational gap in our community. The 21 members are working hard to meet the needs of our undereducated adults. The council’s goal is to support the educational programs of Adult Education in an effort to help these adults become independent, productive citizens. Any person in a leadership position, whether a church or business, understands that in order to stay competitive in the global economy, Tennessee employers need workers who can read, write, compute, solve problems and communicate effectively. In order for the council to succeed, they need to build strong partnerships in the community. According to the state literacy council statistics, 1.03 million Tennesseans age 25 and over do not have a high school diploma. Of this number, 500,000 Tennesseans cannot read or write well enough to function in daily life. To bring this closer to home, 5,510 people in McNairy County do not have a high school diploma, which is 31.5% of our adult population 25 to 64 years of age, according to the 2000 Census data. “Every industry considering coming to McNairy County looks at these statistics to determine what type of workforce we offer,” stated Ted Moore, Economic Development Director and council member. The county provides the building for the adult education center. The local school board assist with payment of the electric bills, salaries and maintenance. The center receives funding that is 90% federal, 10% state and 10% county match totaling $118,750.00 which does not include $6,782.00 allocated for staff development. Over the past 10 years, the center has served 3,277 adults and more than 716 GED’s earned. Since July of last year 87 adults have taken the adult basic educa-

Fifty-nine of the students entered the CMAT consolidated management system in state which requires a level gain in language, math, reading, social studies or science to qualify and 23 GED’s earned all free to students. The Literacy Council picks up any and all student needs to assure success all the way till graduation. Carolyn Bowers and Ray Prather, founding council members, remember one of their first meetings when the council members were taking up a collection for utility bills. Since its inception in the mid 80’s, the center now provides a myriad of services including a Family Resource Center, an Even Start Program and a Pilot PreK Program. Although the council is diligent in their fiduciary duties, their funding recently dropped from $10,000 to $1,000 from United Way. The loss is significant, but the commitment re-

mains strong to continue to assist adults in obtaining the knowledge and skills necessary for employment and self-sufficiency but we need your help. The Independent Appeal and the Literacy Council have partnered together on a dessert tasting fundraiser the week of Valentines Day, Feb. 9 from 5 – 8 p.m. All citizens are invited to attend and sample all the desserts for just $5 at the door including a chance at great door prizes and entertainment by After Hours. A better tomorrow for McNairy County cannot be successful in isolation. It is our plea that area businesses and churches will see it in their hearts to support literacy for all and make a commitment to literacy for all. Call (731) 645-5346 for details to sponsor a dessert table, volunteer or make a donation to this worthy cause. Together we can build a brighter future.

In this role he has the opportunity to assist others in making positive life changes. Since earning his GED credential, he has also earned the credentials to be a teacher with Teen Challenge. Angelo’s life has recently been highlighted on The 700 Club, a program that airs on the Christian Broadcasting Network. When asked if he had any personal comment(s) he would like to share with others about the McNairy County Adult Education Program, he stated that the program has a caring and encouraging staff which is always available to help students excel. Angelo’s fondest memory as a student in the McNairy County Adult Education Program was the GED Graduation Ceremony. Angelo was recently married and has added the role of husband and stepfather to his life.

MRA Banquet: A night of excellence and laughter (Staff) – The McNairy Regional Alliance and Economic Development Commission, MRA, are busy planning their annual banquet and awards ceremony to honor the progress and success of area businesses, community leaders and volunteers. McNairy County has much to celebrate being the state’s longest running Three Star Award recipient, 31 consecutive years. “It has been a slow economy, but there are a lot of positives to celebrate,” stated MRA Director of Chamber Programs Russell Ingle. “Many of our businesses, large and small, should be recognized and honored for their progress and efforts to improve our community. In that regard, 2011 was a successful year.” This year’s event, which is themed “A Night of Excellence & Laughter”, will feature an elegant

dinner, awards ceremony and nationally renowned comedian Jeff Allen. State and regional dignitaries have also been invited to take part in the event. “MRA leadership felt scheduling a comedian would be a little change of pace from years past,” stated Ingle. “Jeff Allen will provide a lot of laughs. Celebrating a ‘Night of Excellence & Laughter’, I think is a perfect way to begin the New Year.” “With broad appeal to crossgenerational audiences, Jeff’s comedy captures the humor in everyday life,” Ingle continued. “Jeff has performed on every cable comedy network, including Comedy Central, Showtime and HBO. He has starred in projects with Castle Rock Television, First Look Studios and Warner Brothers. He has performed for Gener-

al Mills, Sams Club, Presidential Inaugurals, Congressional galas and for US troops on aircraft carriers and battle ships in the Middle East.” The McNairy Regional Alliance Annual Banquet & Awards Ceremony will be held Saturday, Jan. 28 at the Pickwick Inn. Tickets are $30 each or a table of eight for $240. Sponsorship packages are available that feature a wide variety of benefits. Non-members are invited to take part in the event. This banquet offers a wonderful opportunity to network and honor the contributions of individuals and businesses having a positive impact on our community. Romney sweeps Adamsville High School Band honored early primaries By Jeff Whitten Head News Writer

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney won the New Hampshire primary on Jan. 17 after winning the Iowa caucuses a week earlier, accomplishing something no Republican candidate who is not an incumbent has ever done. He received over 39 percent of the vote to Texas Rep. Ron Paul’s nearly 23 percent. Former Utah Gov. and Ambassador to China Jon Huntsman received nearly 17 percent of the vote. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Former Penn. Senator Rick Santorum finished in a distant tie for fourth with less than 10 percent of the vote. Huntsman has dropped out of the race and endorsed Romney. He never polled above single digits in South Carolina, the next primary. Turnout in the Republican primary was around 240,000, about the same as 2000 and 2008. Romney got 62 percent of voters who said that the most important quality was who could beat Obama. Among all voters, 56 percent said that Romney was the candidate most likely to beat Obama. Romney underperformed among those voters making less than $30,000, getting only 31 percent of the vote, according to exit polls. He also lost independents narrowly to Paul by 29 to 32 percent. Romney won 49 percent of Republicans to 15 percent for Paul and 11 percent for Huntsman. However, onethird of Republicans told the exit polls they would be dissatisfied if Romney were the nominee. Romney beat Paul among conservatives by 42 to 19 percent. Even among the very conservative, Romney defeated Santorum by 33 to 26 percent. Paul is doing very well with first-time voters. He garnered 40 percent of the vote among these voters, to 23 percent for Romney and 20 percent for Huntsman. One week earlier, Romney won the Iowa caucuses by eight votes over Santorum, both gaining about a quarter of the vote. Paul came in third with about 21 percent of the vote, Gingrich came in fourth with 13 percent of the vote and Perry placed fifth with 10 percent. The South Carolina primary was held last Tuesday but results were not available at press time. Romney ran fourth in 2008 but was leading in the polls. Romney was leading Gingrich by 9 percentage points in a New Frontier Strategy poll released on Jan. 12. According to exit polls in 2008, 60 percent of South Carolina voters are evangelical Christians. Romney only got 11 percent of these voters then, even less than his 13 percent of all voters then.

sightings of big cats in recent history in Tennessee and for hundreds of miles extending into other states in a radius around McNairy County. “Two weeks ago a trapper caught a 100 lb. plus (cougar) in a live trap in Missouri,” Harden said. However, Harden was skeptical that these cats had moved into our state and said that with the thousands of trail cameras along with all of the hunters, hikers and animal vehicle interactions in the state that there has been no direct evidence of their existence. “We have to be scientific about this, we need credible and concrete proof of these animals, until then we are skeptics,” Harden said. “If we have a population of something in

this state we will have a carcass somewhere.” Using the same methods of observation scientists have been able to document the reappearance or introduction of species that have not been present in Tennessee in modern history such as nutria, armadillos, alligators and coyotes in Tennessee. Harden said that he was confident that if these animals do make their way into the state that they will be noticed. For more information on the eastward expansion of cougars please visit cougarnet.org. The Independent Appeal is offering $100 for the first clear and publishable photo of a large cat species in McNairy County. This reward will be paid upon verification of the photo’s validity, and must be received with a signed statement from the photographer with contact details. It must contain date, time and precise location of the photo.

ordinances or procedures. “In essence, one is proposed, voted on—that is how it happens,” he said. “I think with the naming of the Dixie Park out there, that you are going to have more fallout on that. I think it’s going to come back and bite you,” Sheffield said. The board approved hiring Askew, Hargraves, Harcourt and Associates for engineering services related to the mitigation grant application. This grant comes from the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency, through the Federal Emergency Management Agency. This grant arose out of the declaration of a disaster area due to the flooding, severe storms and straight-line winds and tornados in May. The money will be used to stabilize the creek banks at the city park and the ditch that comes from the road down, according to Robinson. Selmer Fire Chief Anthony Carr said that it was his understanding that the grant requires a 25 percent match, with the state picking up half of the match. The money spent by the city on playground equipment and mulch also counts toward the match. “That should cover our match,” he said. The engineering firm will give the city an estimate and their fees will come from the proceeds of the grant and will not cost the city anything if they do not get the grant. The board approved issuing $112,000 in bonds in order to pay for a cost overrun on the downtown water project. The interest rate will not exceed 3 percent and will be paid off over 40 years, according to the resolution. They approved an agreement to sell water to Bethel Springs. The agreement will not jeopardize Selmer water flow in any way, according to Utilities Director Richard Ashe. The board approved $12,000 to purchase equipment for the city to manage a tire program for all city vehicles. They would buy tires off state contracts and fix their own tires, Robinson said. Ashe said the program would pay for itself over the next year and a half. The board unanimously elected John Smith Treasurer and voted 3-2 to reelect Simpson Vice-Mayor. Finlayson was nominated and received two votes. Selmer Assistant Fire Chief Frankie Gilbert was recognized and honored by Fire Chief Anthony Carr and the board for 25 years’ service. “Tonight I would like to recognize and honor Frankie Gilbert for your 25 years of dedicated service to the Town of Selmer,” Carr said.

INDEPENDENT APPEAL v PAGE 5A

Selmer beer board suspends license By Jeff Whitten Head News Writer

The Selmer Beer Board voted unanimously to suspend the beer license of Selmer Food and Gas for selling beer without checking identification for 60 days, at its Jan. 10 meeting. The suspension will begin at Selmer Police Chief Neal Burks’ discretion. Burks said that he would give the business a chance to sell its existing inventory of alcohol products before beginning the suspension. Assistant Police Chief Kim Holley told the

board that on Dec. 5, he and Investigator Jamie Lowrance of the Drug Task Force gave an 18 year-old undercover informant a $10 bill and sent her into the business to purchase alcohol. The informant purchased the alcohol and Holley and Lowrance went into the business to tell Balindar Singh, who is the owner and the one who sold the alcohol that he had sold the alcohol to the informant without asking for identification. “We went in and talked to him and told him what had happened. We asked if he carded people and he said he did. I told him what we

had done. He went and looked at his camera. I showed him the young lady he sold it to and I issued him a citation for that charge,” Holley said. In answer to a question from Vice-Mayor Paul Simpson, Holley said that there is a pending criminal complaint for underage alcohol sales in McNairy County General Sessions Court. Singh pleaded guilty of sale of alcohol to a minor and fined $100 and sentenced to supervised probation last Thursday. Owner Balindar Singh spoke in his own defense. He said he had been the permit holder for the last year. Holley said this was Singh’s first of-

fense. “We are a small store and we have repeat customers,” Singh said. Singh said he had never intentionally sold beer to minors. The undercover informant was over six feet tall and looked over 35, Singh said. The law does not require checking identification of anyone over 35. The man that was with the young woman looked to be in his 60s, he added. Holley said that the man was between 55 and 60. “It was an error in judgment, not my intention to sell beer to minors,” Singh said.

Michie Elementary Student Council supports Roundup By Jeff Whitten Head News Writer

The Michie Elementary School student council has a unique project: to expand the One-to-One technology program in their school and to encourage Michie residents to participate in the Roundup program. “It’s about computer training… how we can all get on a computer and learn in group projects and research faster and have all our information stored on our own computer. I just think it’s a good thing to do in all the classrooms in Michie. It’s how the times are going these days. We need to evolve with them,” said council President Grayson Chandler. The Roundup program, first proposed by Selmer Mayor David Robinson, would round up utility bills to the nearest dollar unless customers opt out and half of the money raised would go to the One to One technology program for the schools and half for the Last Dollar Scholarship program. This program would provide scholarships for county seniors on a first come, first served basis to attend a two-year college program or vocational-technical school, after other sources of financial aid such as Pell Grants and Lottery Scholarships are exhausted. Michie Mayor Mike Glisson and McNairy County Schools Technology Coordinator Terry Burns visited classrooms at the Michie school on Dec 1, 2011. Glisson asked Anne Bowers’ eighth grade language arts class about the difference that computers in the classroom makes instead of books. One student replied that it gives them greater access to information about the subjects they are studying. Another said that it gives them more access to information. Another said that they can keep their grades on spreadsheets and their work on flash drives (removable storage media).

“So basically, y’all are learning to use technology in a lot of different ways, which is great because when you get older even in my experiences now I was not privy to computers and it is quite testing at times when I have to do things that I’m not real comfortable with, so I think it’s very important that we push this program as much as we can. You need to talk it up. You need to tell your parents, your grandparents, everybody that you can think of. They (laptops) need to be in every classroom because this is the future,” Glisson said. Glisson noted that the Michie Board of Aldermen adopted the program at their Nov. 28 meeting and it will be implemented starting Jan 1. “It’s absolutely a voluntary program, but you need to stress to them (parents) how important it is for each one of you,” Glisson said. “The lecture days are over. It’s interactive, which is exactly what y’all are doing. You’re working on your own. You’re working with groups. You’re trying to find the information that’s out there. There’s so much more information here on the internet than in the library. So really push this because I want to get it to every classroom in every school,” Burns said. Glisson asked the class how many planned to go to college and how much they thought it would cost. “Good answers, because you’re right. It costs a lot,” Glisson said in response to the students’ answers. That led Glisson into a discussion of the other beneficiary of the Roundup program: Last Dollar Scholarships. “We don’t know what the future holds as far as colleges offering scholarships. Another seems to be there is a lot of money available at this point if your grades are good,” Glisson said. Glisson acknowledged that everyone cannot be involved in a scholarship program, but that will not necessarily limit students’ ability to go to college.

This is because half of the Roundup money goes to scholarships for vocational-technical school or a twoyear college program, he said. “So the benefits are actually twofold: One is to get you ready for adulthood, for what you’re going to face in the future. The second is to guarantee an education through the twelfth grade, but all bets are off once this is over with. So this would give an opportunity to further that education,” Glisson said. The scholarships would be open to all McNairy County students, but would be limited to community colleges and vocational-technical schools in Tennessee. “When I was in high school, I wasn’t a big athlete. I belonged to the Beta Club, but I wasn’t a scholar, by no means…If it hadn’t been for my parents and me working and a good banker, I wouldn’t have been able to go to college and these scholarships will really help you,” Burns said. Bowers class was reading the novel “No Promises in the Wind,” by Irene Hunt, which is about the Great Depression. Students said the laptops help them get many more views of the depression and that the video capability of the laptops brings the topic to life. “I am very much in favor of the Roundup program and I am very much in favor of the One-to-One,” Principal Suzanne Henson said. She said that the school is the only place some students have access to the internet and computers and she looks forward to the day when there are computers in all of the classrooms in the school. The Michie program is an opt-in program, unlike many of the others. “Every month there will be a place on that bill for you to pay that extra. At the end of the month we will be able to generate a report that tells how much

They are (l to r): Reporter Margie Coleman, Treasurer Madeline Lynch, President Grayson Chandler, Vice-President Brooke Bennett and Secretary Kendall Dickerson. of that money is for the Roundup program,” Glisson explained. Although some cities have expressed concern that their software could not accommodate the program, this was not the case with Michie. We found it to be absolutely no problem whatsoever. It was done in three or four days, five days with no problems,” Glisson said. “What needs to be stressed is that, McNairy County, we’re all in this together. It’s not a matter of Selmer versus Adamsville versus Michie versus Eastview. We’re all in this thing for the betterment of the students, for the betterment of education…because we’re all gonna get a certain allotment. Just because you think you may not get as much as you think you’re entitled to…Terry has made the statement that he’s going to account for

every penny…if you have that kind of accountability and I have no reason to believe that we don’t, then Adamsville’s gonna get their share just like Selmer’s gonna get their share and Michie’s gonna get theirs,” Glisson observed. “We give them plenty of professional development. They have the opportunity to go during the summer to many, many programs and during the year, too,” Burns said. Local teachers train with teachers from other counties who are having success with their programs. Dr. Clif Mims and Deborah Lowther from the University of Memphis help train One-to-One teachers. This training includes collaboration, cooperative learning, research, writing, creativity, learning as a team and at one’s own pace and Web 2.0.

Dr. Jerry Savelle was an average, blue-collar man who was struggling and needed God’s help. While he considered himself a “nobody,” when he became a believer God told him not to worry about it because He was a master at making champions out of nobodies. God has since taken Dr. Savelle from being a constant quitter to a man who knows how to stand on the Word of God until victory is experienced. Because of the lifechanging combination of God’s faithfulness and Dr. Savelle’s “no quit” attitude, his life is totally different than it was thirty-eight years ago. Since 1969, Dr. Savelle has been traveling the world teaching people how to win in life. Dr. Savelle has ministered in more than three thousand churches in twenty-six nations, and has overseas offices in the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and a mission’s outreach in Tanzania, Africa. God has used Dr. Savelle to impact people who are burned out on religion and who have backslidden in their walk with God, as well as Christians who have a need to hear the Word of God presented in terms applicable to their lives, dreams, and destinies. He is the host of the Jerry Savelle Ministries television broadcast which airs in two hundred countries worldwide. Dr. Savelle is the author of more than forty books, including his bestsellers, If Satan Can’t Steal Your Joy, He Can’t Keep Your Goods and Called to Battle, Destined To Win. “I don’t know. I really haven’t been paying attention much to it. Obama, I think, might win because he’s been it for a couple of years, and I think he might pull it together.”

“Romney. I think he’ll be nominated. He’ll be elected because we need something done because the President we have now hasn’t done anything for the United States. He’s got a bad record.”

“I think Newt Gingrich will win. The reason I think he will win is because of his background and his intelligence, and he has the plan to get us out of the problem we’re in right now.”

“I think it will be a republican, but I don’t know which one will win.”

Brenda Briggs Selmer: “Mitt Romney because I feel that he’ll do better than Obama in getting this economy going, and we need somebody that’ll get in there and help the small people and the people that really need help and quit giving to other countries and start putting into our country.”

Senator Gresham salutes community literacy efforts Dear Editor, Thank you for your efforts “for the love of literacy.” The statistics you quoted are accurate and disturbing. It’s obvious that we have to do all we can as individuals and as a community to foster and mentor a love for reading. I am proud of your continuing support in this regard. Call me if you need me! Dolores Gresham State Senator and Education Committee Chairman

(Editor’s note: According to the 2000 Census data more than 5,510 adults age 25-64 do not have a high school diploma which is 31.5% or approximately 1 out of every 3 adults in McNairy County. The Tennessee Literacy Council states that 1,030,000 Tennesseans age 25 and over do not have a high school diploma. Of this number, 500,000 Tennesseans cannot read or write well enough to function in daily life.

More than 20% of adults read at or below a fifth-grade level, far below the level needed to earn a living wage. The National Adult Literacy Survey found that over 40 million Americans age 16 and older have significant literacy needs. The Independent Appeal and the McNairy County Literacy Council are seeking community partners to raise much needed funding at a dessert tast-

ing February 9, from 5 until 8 p.m. at the Selmer Community Center for $5.00 admission. All will be eligible for door prizes and enjoy entertainment by After Hours and all the delicious desserts. Any business or church willing to sponsor a dessert table, volunteer or make a donation please call (731) 645-5346. Senator Gresham is planning to attend the fundraiser.)

By T.C. Williams Hello everyone, I hope you had a good week. Can you believe this weather? But let’s not complain, maybe we are headed for a mild winter. I certainly hope so, because I am ready for spring! Well, on with the news, things are rather quiet here in Bethel this week. Madgelean Sanders and Linda Brasher traveled to Jacksonville, Fla. during the Christmas holidays to visit with Madgelean’s son Michael. They spent two weeks visiting and sight-seeing in the area. Francine’s children came over for dinner while they were there.

Florence Jones and Mickey Sanders of Jackson visited with T.C Williams and other family and friends in Bethel on Saturday evening. Erica Jones and daughter Jayla of LaVergne, Tenn. came home to visit her parents Willie and Tamela Sain and helped them celebrate their 36th wedding anniversary, congratulations to the Sains! I’m thankful for each day, it matters not if rain or sun, I’m thankful for each day that comes. I open up my eyes and say, “Thank You, God, for one more day.” Until next time, be kind to your self and others!

St. Jude Marathon

card of thanks

Thank You

Gilchrist Family

We survived once again! We did the St. Jude Half Marathon in December. Our times were very good but even more importantly, we raised $4106. This brings our four year total to $12,600. Thanks to everyone who supported us in any way. The prayers, donations, change collection and our yard sale shoppers. We couldn’t do it without all of you.

The family of Earl Gilchrist wishes to extend its most sincere gratitude for the many visits, calls, cards, flowers, gifts and prayers during this most difficult time. Words cannot express our appreciation for the dozens of friends, extended family and members of the community for your generous outpouring of love and support. A most special thank you to Bro. Orville McMahan and Bro. Slade Blend for their beautiful words, Mr. Freddie Cone and Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Inman of Shackelford Funeral Directors for their kind assistance and professionalism, and to the congregation of Mt. Sharon Presbyterian Church for the wonderful meal and fellowship following the service. Each one of you is a blessing and our hearts are overwhelmed with gratitude.

In Memory “When Tomorrow Starts Without Me” When tomorrow starts without me, And I’m not there to see, If the sun should rise and find your eyes, All filled with tears for me. I wish so much you wouldn’t cry, The way you did today, While thinking of many things, We didn’t get to say. I know how much you love me, As much as I love you, And each time that you think of me, I’ll know you miss me too. But when tomorrow starts without me, Please try to understand, That my angel came & called my name, And took me by the hand.

And said my place was ready, In heaven, far above, And that I’d have to leave behind, All those I dearly love. But when I walked through those heavens gates, I felt so much at home, When God looked down and smiled at me, From his great golden throne. He said, “This is eternity, And all I’ve promised you, Today your life on earth is past, But here it starts anew.” I promise no tomorrow For today will always last And since each day’s the same way, There’s no longing for the past. So when tomorrow starts without me, Don’t think we’re far apart, For every time you think of me, I’m right here in your heart. Thanks to Bro. Glen Miller, The Tennessee River Boys, the pallbearers, and to everyone for their prayers, cards, flowers, visits and kind words. Buddy & Jo Ann Rickman

The Pickwick New Years Tournament held at Pickwick Southside featured McNairy County’s Ramer Eagles in the tournament play. The round robin brackets included games with Savannah Christian, Clifton, Ramer, and the hosting team, Pickwick Southside. Games were spread out to three days last week and girls and boys competed for the first place trophies. The Ramer Eagles finished in first place position with a 3-0 record and the Lady Eagles took second place in the tournament at 2-1. “We were happy to have won second place in the Pickwick New Years Tournament,” said Ramer Lady Eagle Coach Vonda Jobe. Madi Rose Hammock scored 38 points in the tournament and received an honorable mention medallion award. Mary Kate Doyle had a great game against Pickwick scoring 20 points and finished the tournament with a total of 35 points. Day one of the tournament, Ramer went into overtime in the game against Savannah Christian but came out eight points on top for the win.

Ramer 41 Southside 22 Clifton defeated Ramer in the final game of the tournament by 20 points and the Lady Eagles finished at second place with a 2-1 tournament record. “We played hard throughout the tournament,” said Jobe, “but still have many areas that need improvement. We will keep practicing and hope to continue improving as a team.” Clifton 47 Ramer 27 The Ramer boys won first place over Clifton, Savannah Christian, and Pickwick Southside. “We were able to win this round robin tournament by playing as a team,” said Ramer Eagle Coach Jeremy Blakely. “We played team defense and helped each other when needed. Our guards played tough on the ball defense which allowed us to get some steals.” Christian Brown won tournament MVP and averaged 22 points a game. “Kameron Atkins played exceptional defense all week,” said Blakely. “Our bench play was solid as well.” Day one, the Eagles faced SCA after the girls’ match and won by 25 points, intimidating the tournament

competition. Ramer 55 SCA 30 Pickwick Southside was a great contender, but the Ramer Eagles were able to force Southside to foul late in the fourth. Brown went to the line and made eight out of eight free throws and James Bryant was two for two from the line, which gave Ramer a 10 point win over Southside. Ramer 46 Pickwick 36 Clifton was one of the toughest teams in the tournament, losing only two regular season games thus far. Ramer was able to slow down inside scoring. The Eagles were able to guard every shot, but got into some foul trouble and had to use a few bench players, who also contributed to the 11 point win.

A strong performance by Adamsville’s Lady Cardinals in the final three quarters of their 35-point victory over Sacred Heart of Jesus High School gave them their third District 15-A win of the year and their 11th overall. Lady Cardinals- 60 Sacred Heart- 25 “I was kind of disappointed with the first quarter. We gave up 14,” said head coach Todd McGee. “A lot of times we get some team we think we’re better than and we don’t play like we’re capable of playing. Until we get that fixed, we’re going to struggle, and sooner or later we’re going to get beat by somebody we’re not supposed to.” McGee wants his girls to show a bit more consistency no matter who the opponent might be. “It’s more about a consistent play that I’m wanting. I don’t care if you’re playing a junior high team or you’re going to play the New York Knicks,” said McGee. “You need to play the way you’re capable of playing no matter what the competition is.” The Lady Cardinals found themselves trailing 14-10 with a little over three minutes remaining in the first quarter but managed to tie the game up before the period ended. In the second quarter Adamsville was clicking on all cylinders. The Lady Cards started and finished the quarter with 3-pointers to cap off a 23-1 run before halftime. Up 37-15 after the break, AHS kept its foot on the accelerator, mounting a 32-point lead before the fourth quarter rolled around. With the junior varsity squad holding the Lady Knights at bay in the final quarter, Adamsville coasted to their sixth straight win and boasts a 6-0 record on their home court. “We were able to play everybody,” said McGee. “Two people didn’t score, but we did get about 12 to score though. That’s a lot.” At 11-3, the Lady Cardinals traveled to Jackson, Tenn. to take on the Trinity

Bobcats face stiff competition for homecoming games By Amanda Lowrance Head Sports Writer

After recognizing McNairy Central Homecoming Queen Kindra Brown and Sweetheart Raven Gudino, the Bobcats battled the top ranked Bolivar Tigers in a district matchup. The Lady Bobcats stand tall at number one in the district after a two point win over the Lady Tigers generating five consecutive wins. The Tigers, who are number two in the state, defeated the Bobcats after a tough, hard fought game 55-50. The crowd at MCHS enjoyed every moment of play as the two games went head-to-head in nail-biting competition. “This was a big win over the number two team in our district,” said Lady Bobcat Coach, Jerry Lott. “We made some big plays in the fourth quarter, and we made eight of nine free throws to secure the win.” Homecoming Queen Kindra Brown came out scoring big for the Lady Bobcats, making the first shot underneath and sinking two three-point shots in the first quarter. Chelsea Bodiford, Tierra Lusk, and BreAnna Burge hit several shots from outside the arch to give McNairy Central a whopping total of seven team threepointers. The close scoring game battled back and forth through all four quarters. With 25 seconds to go, Bolivar hit a long three to tie the score at 53. Lusk took the lead at the free throw line, giving the Lady Tigers nine seconds to make a scoring play. Bolivar drove the ball inside to tie the game and MCHS post player, Mallorie Sweat rejected the shot with a block to take the two point win over the Lady Tigers.

Bolivar got the first shot off in the game against McNairy Central, but CJ Barnes took the lead with an outside shot. Under pressure, playing a tough team, the Bobcats performed very well and the crowd was pleased. McNairy held the lead at the half 26-22 as the two teams made off to the locker room. “We let the game get away from us in the third quarter when we didn’t get the ball to Rameil like we needed to,” said Bobcat Coach Steve Forsythe. “We did a great job of controlling the tempo of the game and we played hard, but we came up a little short.” Bolivar had a three point lead at the end of the third and was able to slightly outscore the Bobcats in the fourth to take the win. “We only went to the line eight times in this game and Rameil shot all of those,” said Forsythe. “We have to attack the basket more and not settle for outside shots. We were only five of 20 from the three point line and that is not the game we needed to play.”

Earlier in the week, McNairy Central traveled to Liberty Technology Magnet School in Jackson, Tenn. for a district game against Crusaders. The Lady Bobcats brought home a win but the Bobcats lost out in the fourth quarter with a 15 point loss. Bodiford had a tremendous game on the road as she tied two MCHS records at Liberty. One record was tied for most points in a half, and Bodiford tied her own record for most three point shots, which she broke her sophomore year with six three-point shots. Since her sophomore year she had tied the record several times. McNairy took a large jump in the first half and was able to hold on to the win over last year’s district and regional contender. “We shot really well,” said Lott, “Especially the first half where we scored 46 points. Chelsea had a good offensive game with 27 points including six of eight three-pointers.” Girls Box Score

assists and two blocks. Playing one of their worst halves of the season, AHS hit only three of their first 32 shots but woke up in the final two quarters. Kiddy stroked a 3-pointer for Adamsville in the midst of a 9-2 third quarter run, but the defense was the story for AHS as Scotts Hill was held to two points for the first ten minutes of the second half. There were a total of five lead changes in the final quarter of play, and with a one-point lead and only five seconds remaining Simone Wilson blocked a Lady Lion shot that would have potentially given Scotts Hill the victory. “Simone's not getting 20 points a night, she's not getting 10 rebounds a night, but she throttles back somebody else's inside players just by her presence being out there on the floor,” said McGee. “That girl was wearing us out a little bit, and that was a really big play. If they would've hit that shot we probably would've been down one at the end.” With the win, Adamsville improved to 10-3 overall and 2-2 in District 15-A before hosting Sacred Heart of Jesus High School last Friday night. Should the BCS Championship game be renamed the “SEC Championship Part 2”? My take on this is to invite all FBS (formerly Division 1) presidents/chancellors to a neutral small town where the only order of business is to convince these men/women of power to agree to a consensual 10 team (Top 2 teams wait until the other 8 are whittled down to 2) playoff system and have a more fair and evenly balanced outcome.

The 14th college football Bowl Championship Series is in the books with an SEC team again crowned champion. The University of Tennessee Vols won the inaugural BCS game by knocking off the Florida State Seminoles. Other SEC teams winning the coveted crystal football in the past (and I’m sure to miss mentioning some SEC winners) are teams such as Auburn Tigers, Alabama Crimson Tide, LSU Tigers and the Florida Gators (twice).

Cards break Sacred Heart, fall to Scotts Hill By Andrew Alexander Sports Writer

The Cardinals picked up a convincing 34-point win over second-year District 15-A opponent Sacred Heart of Jesus High School last Friday night. Jalen Kendall led the Cardinals over the Knights with a team-leading 12 points while 11 Adamsville players scored in the contest. Cardinals- 49 Sacred Heart- 15 “We had a great practice yesterday and Wednesday that led up to an outcome like that,” said head coach Nathaniel Root. “That’s what I’m trying to get these young guys to realize. The practices you have that are great lead up to great games. If you have bad practices, they lead to bad performances.” Adamsville’s practices early in the week certainly had them ready early against the Knights as they jumped out to a 20-3 lead by the end of the first quarter and never looked back. With a 37-8 lead at halftime, Adamsville sat their starters and allowed the youngsters to get some playing time as they closed out the final two quarters of the game. “They got an opportunity to go in and play. I wish it would have been under different circumstances. I wanted our guys to learn to win with class and not come down and jack up the first shot they had because it was open,” said Root. “These guys don’t get as many minutes as the older guys, so I really thought it was important for these younger guys to get in and get the ball from side to side against that zone, and get to working on our offense instead of scoring.” With a sizable advantage in the second half, Adamsville called off the dogs and did not attempt a three after halftime. Including free throws, AHS only attempted 17 shots in the third and fourth quarters. The win gave Adamsville a record of 2-12 overall and 2-3 in the district before the Cardinals traveled to Trinity Christian Academy in Jackson, Tenn. last Tuesday. “They like to trap and play aggressively, but I think our athleticism will take over that game as long as we keep improving in practices on Monday and Tuesday before the game...” said Root. “Right now, I think they’re second in the district, and I think that’s going to be a challenge for us to go up there and send a statement to the rest of the district of how good we really can be.” Boys’ Box Score

Coming off their first win of the season, the Adamsville Cardinals looked to have another victory under their belts Jan. 10 against Scotts Hill High School until the second half rolled around. “We went into coast-mode. I'll probably take the blame for that one,” said Root. “I probably should have subbed differently and got some different guys in there.” Senior Josh Shoate lead the Cardinals in scoring for the second consecutive game, tallying 16 points before all was said and done. Freshman Tucker Campbell was raining threes in the first half, hitting three in the first quarter alone and finished the contest with 14 points. Leading by 12 at the break, AHS allowed the Lions to claw their way back into the district matchup with a 7-0 run to end the third quarter. The Lions extended the run in the fourth quarter to 11-2 before hitting a free throw that knotted the score at 46-46. Adamsville switched it into high gear, but the Lions were still on the prowl. Down three with less than a minute to play, Adamsville’s Kasey Hurley went to the line for two free throws. Hurley converted the first and missed the second, but the Lions stepped on the baseline attempting to pull down the rebound and returned possession to AHS with 21 second left. Root called a timeout with a 57-55 deficit to draw up a play to tie it up, but another empty possession forced Adamsville to foul with Scotts Hill in the double-bonus. The Lions converted on their free throws and slammed the door on the Cards hopes for back-to-back wins. “Even in the end, we had chances to win in the end and we just shot ourselves in the foot,” said Root. “I was disappointed because these guys don't like losing, and what we've been through so far, we really needed that win.” Root planned to use the loss as motivation and a teaching tool for his players. “It was a great learning tool for these guys the next day,” said Root. “We went back and looked at it, talked about it as a group, and used it as a teaching tool to make sure we don't end up in that position again when you're up 12 twice in the second half and allow a team to come back on you.” Adamsville dropped to 1-12 overall and 1-3 in District 15-A with the loss before hosting Sacred Heart last Friday night.

Financial Aid for Students Rachel Burns and Holly Henson

With the last semester of the school year already in session, it is now time for seniors to start getting prepared for their future. If their future includes college, then they should plan to attend the upcoming financial aid meeting that will be held on the 19th. This meeting can help students and parents prepare for filling out the FAFSA. By filling out the FAFSA, eligible individuals can receive federally funded financial assistance for education beyond high school. During the meeting, Financial Aid office workers from UT Martin will cover a lecture on FAFSA and help parents with the steps. The school also offers

computers where parents can get online and fill out their FAFSA while at school. In advance to the meeting, parents new to FAFSA should create a pin number during the application process for not only their child but also themselves. If a parent had a child go through FAFSA before and made a pin for themselves, then the parent can keep their old pin number but must create a new one for their student. Every parent and student can go to www.fafsa.com. This website will tell you what you should bring and help you be familiar with the rules before the meeting.

Bobcat, Tiger JV teams collide By Andrew Alexander Sports Writer

2012 Schedule of Monthly Meetings

Hardin Co.- 38 Lady Bobcats- 34 The Lady Bobcat junior varsity team was handed a tough loss last Thursday night when they matched up against Hardin County. MCHS opened the game on a 6-0 run with the Lady Tigers struggling to get shots to fall, but led by only four at the end of the first quarter. HCHS awoke from their slumber in the second and tied the game 8-8, but MCHS stepped up and took a three point lead into the locker room at halftime. The Lady Tigers stole the lead away from the Lady Bobcats, coming out of the break on a 6-2 run, making the score 18-15 in their favor. Freshman Rebekah Lowrie knocked down a three to cut the lead to one before the third quarter ended, but MCHS’s defense could not tighten up in the fourth, allowing HCHS to go home with a win under their belts. “We gave up too many easy shots in the second half,” said MCHS head coach Jerry Lott. Despite the hard-fought loss, the Lady Cats JV squad still boasts a 10-2 record. With only four games left on the schedule, MCHS will play Tishomingo County on the road Thursday in an attempt to pick up their 11th win of the season. Girls’ Box Score

Bobcats- 41 Hardin Co.- 38 McNairy Central’s junior varsity team played a tight game with Hardin County, but the heroics of Sheldon Carroll put the Bobcats on top in the end. “We were tied with 11 seconds to go, and Sheldon

Carroll hit a three to win it at the buzzer,” said Steve Forsythe, MCHS Head Coach. The Bobcats held a 9-4 lead at the end of the first, but saw it slip away before halftime as the second quarter ended knotted at 18 all. MCHS regained their lead in the third quarter and led 3025 heading into the fourth. The Tigers roared back in the final quarter of play, outscoring the Bobcats 13-8 before Carroll hit the dagger that gave MCHS the win. “We were able to build

leads in the second and fourth quarters only to see them evaporate,” said Forsythe. “The guys played well defensively and are getting better.”
