A house on Bethel Purdy Road burned last Wednesday night. Fire departments from Bethel Springs, Lawton, Beauty Hill and McNairy County responded. The house was totally destroyed, according to Bethel Springs Volunteer Fire Department Fire Chief David McCullar. The house was owned by Kennie Lamberth, but the occupant recently moved out. “It was burning pretty good. The wind was blowing and it was raining,” McCullar said.
Tull begins work on Selmer mural By Christen Coulon Editor
Brian Tull, the artist responsible for Selmer’s Rockabilly Highway mural at the intersection of Court and Second Avenues started his second mural in the town last weekend on the side of the McMahan Law Firm building facing Rockabilly Park. “I hope to have it completed by June,” Tull said. “All my paintings feature some sort of nostalgia; Eileen Rose and Rich Gilbert of The Silver Threads fit perfectly with their look and sound.” His new painting will fit in with the Rockabilly theme of the first and will feature imagery tying the sound to Selmer’s famous Highway 45. “I chose the old gas station with a car simply to play off the Rockabilly Highway and transportation,” Tull said. “I like the word highway; the movement, inspiration and all the hopes that come with it. The gas station is actually the Cowan, Tenn Welcome Center.” “Maryann Knowles and Mark Ledbetter were very kind in letting me

Bethel Springs police officer Bandy Burney was charged with sexual harassment by Tiffany Shoate. Shoate charged that Burney touched her on the shoulder during a traffic stop, according to a police department complaint log provided by Bethel Springs Mayor, Kay Cox. According to Bandy’s statement, he radared Shoate’s vehicle at 44 mph on Main Street, stopping her on Bethel Purdy Road. Shoate said in her statement that when she went over 30 mph she braked to get back down under the speed limit, but since there was a van behind her, she did not want to stop too quickly. “He took my license back to the patrol car, and a few minutes later he came back and said he was going to let me off with a warning. All the while he was patting my shoulder,” Shoate said in her statement. In an interview with the Independent Appeal last Mon-
day, Burney denied that he ever touched Shoate. “At that time I went back to my car, and then the dispatcher called me and asked if I could break away from my stop and I said yes. I went back up and told Ms. Shoate I was going to give her a warning and to slow it down,” Burney said in his statement. After a motion to adjourn, but before the vote, some audience members pointed out that the police report had not been read. Police Chief T. E. “Pee Wee” Sowell then read the report . After Sowell finished, the topic of the charge against Burney arose. The board, upon advice from the Municipal Technical Advisory Service, referred the matter to Town Attorney George “DJ” Norton so he could investigate it. After hearing from Shoate and other members of the audience, the board voted to suspend Burney. See next week’s Independent Appeal for more details about the meeting.

guitarist, Joe Perry, for the past 11 years. He brought Perry’s bus to Selmer last Friday while conducting business downtown. Langley had been driving tour busses for other stars such as Dave Matthews, when he met Perry by chance. He was contracted to drive Aerosmith for two days while their private jet was undergoing repairs. “After those two days, (Perry) fell in love with touring on a bus,” Langley said. The bus was perfect for Perry because it would allow him to tour with his family. “Joe is very family-orientated and loves to travel with his family,” Langley said. “This was the perfect option for him.” Perry decided to have a bus custom built and brought Langley in as his permanent driver. In the past 11 years, the bus has become a piece of Rock and Roll history with Perry lending it to A-list Rockers for their tours as well. Langley said that Ozzy Osbourne, Melissa Etheridge, Lenny Kravitz, David Coverdale, and Bob Weir have all toured on the bus in the last decade. Working for Perry has been like living a dream for Langley, “One day you wake up and realize that your employer is Aerosmith. It’s great.” Langley said that Perry treats him like family when they are on tour, even taking him along on side trips when they have a short break during the tour. Langley even recalled one story when Perry invited him on a helicopter with his family to see the Grand Canyon. Once they arrived, the helicopter landed on a plateau in the middle of the Grand Canyon and everyone got out to eat lunch. Aerosmith’s tour is set to begin this summer around the first week of June, and Langley said that he expected the tour to last between 3-5 months. “It all depends on if Steven Tyler does American Idol Staff Photos by Christen Coulon again,” Langley said. “If he does American Idol they will Mark Langley gives a tour of Aerosmith take a break and go back out in late fall.” Langley said that he did not know if Aerosmith would lead guitarist Joe Perry’s bus in Selmer last Friday. Langley, a Milledgeville play any shows in Tennessee on this tour, but said that it business owner, also serves at Perry’s was a possibility there would be a show in Memphis or driver when he is on tour. Nashville.
On the surface, Langley, the owner of Langley Transport in Milledgeville, may not seem like your typical rock and roller. However, when asked, Langley presented years of firsthand experiences in the industry and a 12-ton piece of rock and roll memorabilia. Langley has served as the tour bus driver for Aerosmith’s lead

Local libraries offer computer classes By Jeff Whitten Head News Writer
If you always wanted to learn about computers, but never had the chance, you can now do so for free at two of our local libraries. Classes are from 5-7 p.m. at the Jack McConnico Memorial Library in Selmer, though at various dates. March classes are full, but classes will run into June. Classes began in February and are taught in a computer lab that has been set up with seven laptops. Students learn about the mouse and keyboard, Microsoft Word, the Internet, email, job searching and resume writing. “We’re real interested in helping the public…with job searching and resume writing. That’s very much need-
ed now for our patrons,” said Selmer library director Norma Humphries. The class, taught by Vickie Wilburn, is classroom instruction for the first hour and hands on experience in the second. “We’re encouraging anyone interested or anyone who can use the computer, but has questions or would like to take a brush up course and they’re all free. We’re encouraging everyone to make use of the library and come and enjoy these classes and hopefully learn a lot more about the computer than they already know,” Humphries said. Anyone 18 years of age or older can come to the library and sign up. “We would just really like to encourage everyone to come by and take advantage of this and we also have free computers that our patrons can use

Last weekend, Rickey Brown, regular contributor to Bill Way’s show on “Charter TV Cable” and WNWS 101.5 morning radio show stopped by Pat’s Cafe while in town visiting his parents. While there Pat Knight presented one of her famous “slugburger” shirts for Brown to give to Way. Brown said he will present him with this shirt and again welcome him back to Selmer the next time he is on the Bill Way Show. Way did a special on the famous slugburgers on cable charter recently and plans to do another segment soon on her famous breakfast here in Selmer. Brown said he has been a customer at Pat’s, (formerly Oliver Lenards) since he was a small child growing up in Selmer.

stage the reference photograph for the mural. If you ever get the chance, make time and visit the little town of Cowan and check out the Railroad Museum as well as the gas station Welcome Center; a nice roadtrip. It’s close to Chattanooga and Monteagle. The car in the photograph is a ‘50 Ford from a local man named Leonard Brown.” Tull who currently lives in Nashville, has kept himself very busy since finishing the Rockabilly Highway mural, and he recently finished a painting for Taylor Swift’s producer and his wife. It was a 7x5-foot. painting. He is currently working on three custom commissions for collectors, as well as working on one piece for gallery inventory. “It’s kind of a creepy-cool piece with a lady standing in front of a broken window,” Tull said. “The model in the painting is a burlesque performer in the UK. The reference photo is from a UK photographer named Grace Elkin. “I usually stage most of my own original reference photos for my paintings, but I saw this one and just had to paint it. I’m actually using the gas station and the same car for another painting for a collector.” After the commissions, Tull hopes to focus on inventory for gallery representation.
I really think Bossy enjoyed traveling as much as we did. She was quite the attraction. I can’t count the number of times we pulled into a gas station and someone came over to take a picture of her. Sometimes my husband gave them a show when he climbed into the trailer and squirted milk into his coffee. To our sorrow, we lost Bossy when she was struck by lightning during a storm. All our children are grown now, but we still talk about our traveling cow. Carroll is a resident of Adamsville, she originally submitted this article to Country Magazine where is was printed in last month’s issue.

When our children were small, my husband decided we needed a milk cow. We lived in the country and had a pretty large family. One day, he came home with a beautiful golden-brown Jersey. We named her Bossy. We all fell in love with her, and she became part of the family. After a few months, my husband took us to Alabama to be near his family for the winter, and Bossy came along in a trailer. In the spring, when we headed home to Florida, Bossy traveled with us too, of course. We did this for about five years.

“My Selmer roots, of course came from my parents; they were always, always supportive of whatever I wanted to do,” Tull said. “They never pushed me in any direction. They just wanted me to be happy, and still do. I’m very happy and thankful for the blessings that God has given me and all the opportunities in art. “While at McNairy Central, a lot of inspiration came from George Souders and Rebecca Nicely. They were always honest about my work and pushing me to the next level in art and challenging me to think creatively. I’m very grateful to have been chosen to do another mural for the city of Selmer, my hometown.” Tull said that he appreciated Selmer’s investment in public art and said that the fact that it is a small town makes it more accessible to the people. “I think it’s great that Selmer is investing in public art,” Tull said. “The fact that it’s a small town only makes it better. Its easily and readily accessible for anyone to see. “In metropolitan areas, you’ve got parking, foot traffic, car traffic, surrounding buildings; a lot of obstructions that could block the art and make it uncomfortable. Investing in public art in a small town such as Selmer can draw visitors and locals alike into the city, easily; they stroll around and buy locally downtown.”

cuses Santorum won 40 percent of the vote to 28 percent for Paul and 24 percent for Romney. Some of the patterns seen in previous exit polls were present in the Super Tuesday exit polls, though Romney and Gingrich tended to sweep all or nearly all categories in their home states. Romney won among TEA party opponents, nonevangelical or born-again Christians, voters that made over $100,000 a year, those who believed that abortion should be legal, who were senior citizens, unmarried women, moderates and liberals. Voters in all states saw the economy as the top issue and Romney almost always got more votes than the other candidates from these voters. The most important candidate quality was always the ability to defeat Obama and Romney always did better than the other candidates among these voters. Santorum tended to win among younger voters, voters making less than $100,000 a year, among the very conservative, TEA party supporters, evangelical/born again Christians and voters who believe that abortion should be illegal. Caucuses held Saturday were a split decision. Santorum won the Kansas caucuses with 51 percent of the vote, to 21 percent for Romney, to 14 percent for Gingrich and 13 percent for Paul. Romney won the Wyoming caucuses with 44 percent to 28 percent for Santorum, 15 percent for uncommitted, 12 percent for Paul and less than 1 percent for Gingrich. Primaries were held last Tuesday in Alabama, Mississippi as well as caucuses in Hawaii and Utah. Results were not available at press time. See our Facebook page and next week’s Independent Appeal for results in these contests.

Little danger from approaching asteroid By Christen Coulon Editor
Astronomers notified the public this week that an asteroid, currently hurtling toward Earth at 14,000 miles per hour and will pass very near the planet on Feb. 15, 2013. The asteroid is currently named 2012 DA14, and according to scientists at NASA’s Near Earth Object Program, it is expected to pass about 17,000 miles away from the earth’s surface. This means that the asteroid is expected to pass within 1/2 the distance that our communications satellites orbit in their geosynchronous orbit. In astronomical terms, this is akin to a bullet grazing your ear. After multiple measurements, scientists have determined that there is almost no chance that the approximately 45 meter wide object will strike the earth in 2013 and have placed the odds of an Earth impact at that time to be about 1 and 77,000. Scientists have not completely ruled out the object striking the earth in the future with more than 100 potential impact dates listed over the next 40 years. The object, about the size of a small high school gym, traveling at nearly 6.14 kilometers per second, could potentially release as much energy as a thermonuclear bomb. Editor’s note: Before we go any further I do want to put this into perspective. Before anyone starts hanging “The end is nigh” signs around their neck, this is not the end of the
world. The earth has been struck by objects this size during recorded human history, and in all certainty, an impact this size will happen again in the fairly near future. The potential exists for significant localized damage in the event of an impact, but this is by no means a world killer. In fact, an object did strike the earth in 1908 in Tunguska, Russia which released a similar amount of energy that 2012 DA14 is capable of releasing, however, due to the remoteness of the area no casualties were reported with this event. According to NASA’s NEO Program the object, 2012 DA14, was discovered by the LaSagra observatory in southern Spain, through more than 100 observations it has been determined that on Feb. 15, 2013, the asteroid will travel rapidly from the southern evening sky into the northern morning sky with its closest Earth approach occurring about 1:25 p.m. (CST) when its visibility achieving a magnitude of less than seven, which is somewhat fainter than naked eye visibility. About 4 minutes after its Earth close approach, there is a good chance it will pass into the Earth’s shadow for about 18 minutes or so before reappearing from the eclipse. When traveling rapidly into the northern morning sky, 2012 DA14 will quickly fade in brightness. For more information on this object or other NEOs currently being tracked by NASA scientists please visit neo.jpl.nasa.gov/.

School board approves textbooks By Jeff Whitten Head News Writer
The McNairy County Board of Education approved the textbook list and the 2012-13 school calendar, as well as hearing a presentation by Shelva Moore of Coordinated School Health on the 5210 school health program at their meeting last Thursday. The board is facing one of the larger textbook expenditures in several years because of the adoption cycle, Director of Schools Charlie Miskelly told the board. “I think we’re probably facing one of the biggest expenditures in textbooks that we’ve had in several years. Sometimes we spend less or more. It’s not just that we want to spend less or more. It’s because of the adoption cycle,” Miskelly said. The textbooks will probably cost more than the $300,000 that is budgeted for them this year, Miskelly said. According to Assistant Director of Schools Dr. Brian Jackson, the county will spend about $320,000 on the books. “Based on the purchasing forecast, the Tennessee Book Company feels like, with our school population, it will probably be about $320,000,” Jackson said. “So obviously, that presents a challenge in itself for this budget for next year. I do salute Dr. Jackson and his committee for their diligent ef-
fort,” Miskelly said. The planning committee had nothing new to report, school board chairman Frank Lacey told the meeting. This committee is charged with making recommendations to the board on the school building program, including finding a site for the proposed new Selmer Elementary School. Miskelly told the board that there was a $919,340 unrealized balance or shortfall from the local sales tax. There are five months left to reach that figure, Miskelly said. This would require collections of $183,000 to $184,000 a month. “It’s not gonna happen, so obviously they are concerned about revenues. They will be facing a shortfall in sales tax,” Miskelly said. “Hopefully there will be another area or two where we can pick (that) up.” Miskelly gave a ballpark estimate that it will cost $700,000 to $1,000,000 to repair the McNairy Central High School roof. He noted that the work has not yet been bid out. Moore spoke to the board on the 5210 program. This program challenges individuals to eat 5 servings of fruits and vegetables, spend 2 hours or less on the computer and watching television, and get 1 hour or more of physical activity and 0 sugary drinks daily. Moore challenged the board to participate in the program. Lacey accepted the challenge and challenged the other members to participate.
Specie looks back at childhood
Walk in the woods leads to day-long journey By Laura Specie Columnist
I wanted to apologize to my readers for not having a story the last couple weeks. I have been bit under the weather. It is kind of hard to write something up-beat when you don’t really feel it. I am feeling somewhat better, and I hope to continue getting better. I will get there, sooner or later. I was an adventurous girl growing up. I know I drove my mom crazy. I was hyper, and had to be on the move all the time. The “journeys” I took as a child you could not do today, as it was a different time. I walked in the woods eating the wild berries, just looking and listening. I did this a lot. I liked being alone in the woods. It was peaceful, and in the eyes of a child quite beautiful. One afternoon, I went on one of my journeys in the woods behind our house. I usually didn’t venture too far, but this one day, I came to a more or less open area. There was a clear path for as long as I could see. “I wondered where this would take me? “ I decided to walk to see where it would lead. I walked, and I walked, I don’t know, it seemed like forever. When I finally came to the end of that
little trail, I stopped and looked around. I was shocked how far I had walked. Where I wound up was in town. I thought Lord, I’ve done it now. I then became kind of nervous, about going back the way I came. Afraid I would get lost and no one would know how to find me. So I decided to take the highway back home. I know that it had to be a good 12-15 miles to walk that way, but really, what choice did I have? I didn’t know what time it was, but I had hoped I could get home before the sun started setting. I started my way home via the highway. I walked and walked....Cars flying by me. I thought “ I never should have done this”. Finally, I reached my street. Another mile and a half or so to go. By the time I finally got home, I was worn out from my adventure. Needless to say, I never ventured that far out in the woods again. Did my parents know? No, they did not. If they had, I probably would have been grounded for life. This is just one of many adventures in my childhood.. I sometimes think about my adventures, and compare the time of then and now, and Remember that life just isn’t the same. Nice to relive those adventures of silliness and yes, foolishness of a child.

Regions Bank on South Third Avenue in Selmer was damaged last Friday in a single vehicle traffic accident. In a statement given to the Selmer Police Department, Thomas Powell said that he attempted to park his 2006 GMC in the handicapped space in front of the bank and when he applied (what he thought) was the break, his vehicle surged forward over the sidewalk and the handicapped sign and into the side of the bank. According to the Selmer PD, the handicapped sign was destroyed and the bank sustained moderate damage.

Making McNairy County Opinion headlines for more than 100 years
turn, it is so important for you, the citizens of McNairy County to show prospective employers that you are serious about training and education. Many people think that students can get financial aid to pay 100% of all educational costs. This is incorrect. Pell Grants from the government do not cover all the tuition, even of a state college or university. Did you also realize that the cost of books per semester is, on average, $500 to $700 or more? A scholarship of $500 in addition to other funding can make a real difference in whether a student can attend college or not. Students do need computers in the classroom to further educational abilities. Let’s not stop there though! We all need to support those students that want to pursue higher education. By allowing your utility bill to be rounded up to the next dollar, you are providing much needed funds to students. More than that, you are saying to the community and to prospective employers that you are serious about the economic future of McNairy County. If we all just do a little bit, it can result in MAJOR accomplishments for this county. Thank you again for your support!!!

Letters to the editor
Thank you so much to the citizens of Michie, Ramer, and Selmer for choosing to participate in the Roundup program made up of both the One to One and the Last Dollar Scholarship Fund recently proposed by Mayor David Robinson. As of today, the Last Dollar Scholarship Fund has already grown to $3,658.26. This fund will be used to provide scholarships to students pursuing a college education. Plans are to begin distributing the scholarships before this fall. Remember that 100% of the collections for the Last Dollar Scholarship Fund go directly to scholarships! According to findings from the most recent U.S. Census Bureau Population Survey, average earnings definitely increase as you attain higher educational levels. The survey showed that those with No Diploma earned $19,169 annually; a High School Diploma earned $28,645 annually; a Bachelor’s Degree earned $51,554 annually; and an Advance Degree earned $78,093 annually. While these figures are averages, you can clearly see what a huge economic impact having an education can be for your family and for your community. The U.S. Census Bureau also shows that only 9.7% of McNairy County’s population has earned a Bachelor’s degree. This is low in comparison to 22.4% in the entire state of Tennessee. Woman disgruntled over traffic ticket Dear Editor: Upon getting the mail today, I noticed a nasty envelope. A red light ticket from the Selmer Police Department. For the day and time we were en route to bury my husband’s uncle, Captain Jimmy L. Duke at Hope Cemetery. The police department had an officer at Hwy. 64 and Hwy. 45 light, but not at the Hwy. 45 and Hwy. 142 light, like they should have. Oh the insanity, when I went to the PD and was informed that, though it’s in their records that their officers participated in the procession from the funeral home to the gravesite, we still must request a hearing and bring whatever we could to show the judge. Really? So, I went to Shackelford’s and explained the situation, and they were more than happy to render me a letter to show the judge. Is this standard practice? This is a slap in the face to the family, in my personal
opinion. If I had run that light while not in a procession, I’d pay the ticket. No harm, no foul. This was in a procession to lay to rest a family member. This is the most despicable thing I have ever been a party to. Instead of reviewing their records and the tapes of the vehicles who got “snapped”, the tickets were signed without care. My husband was a pallbearer for his uncle. I cannot fathom how the police department could just sign off on these tickets without verifying their own records. I will be in court and I will not let this go. This absurdity needs to stop. I feel pretty confident in stating that our family and friends have not been the only ones affected. Wise up, Selmer PD. Check your facts before you sign off on things. Sarah Dicks Guys, Tenn.

Lookin’ For “Love” In All The Wrong Places? This was the title of the country song that was very popular several years back. It was a reminder that meaningful love is hard to come across and our over-use of the word “love” has robbed it of its true meaning. In one of the best known and loved of the Bible parables, Jesus tells us of a young man who went looking for “love” in all the wrong places. The story begins with a son asking for and receiving his inheritance that should have been given to him only after his father’s death. With this large sum of money in hand he set out. His search began among his “fair weather friends” where he was the center of attention, buying food, drink and entertainment for all. But in a short time his money ran out and, soon, so did his “friends”. Left penniless, hungry and homeless, he sought to stave off starvation by tending a herd of hogs that was eating better than he was. Dirty, stinking like the hogs he tended, his thoughts turned to home. He then made up this repentant story to tell his dad and so started his journey back home. Dad was standing out on the porch looking down the road when all of a sudden he saw a familiar figure coming toward him. He could tell by his walk that it was his son that his heart longed for. Off the porch he went in a run, embracing his dirty, stinking son. He kissed both of his cheeks. The son started telling his story only to be silenced by his father. His father then called for the following to be brought to his son... A robe (which was a sign of son-ship) was brought, a signet ring (a sign of authority) was placed on his hand, sandals (a sign of wealth) were then placed upon his feet ... And then the party was on! The father in the story is God and the son we all know as the prodigal is each of us who are looking for love in all the wrong places. We were created creatures “looking for love” by a loving God who wants to wrap his arms around and shower us with the right kind of love. Bible Love ... the Love of God ... is unconditional and with no strings attached. We at Sulphur Springs United Methodist invite you to experience His love firsthand through a people that have found love in all the right places. Join us at 11:00 each Sunday. We are still on the corner of Dunaway and Sulphur Springs Roads where God has been meeting His children for the past 170 years. Jim Barber, Pastor
community events • April is Child Abuse Prevention Month This year’s theme is “It’s Time to Talk About Child Abuse.” With recent events involving child abuse being revealed at major public universities, in the military, and within religious institutions, there has never been a more important time for McNairy County to talk about child abuse. There are many ways to prevent abuse and one primary method is to ensure that potential perpetrators know that our community will stand unified against abuse and work diligently to eradicate harmful behavior against our children. April is child abuse prevention month. One way that local businesses can send a message to the community that they stand together to fight child abuse in McNairy County is to have a special “casual” day for employees by allowing employees to wear this “It’s Time to Talk” Tshirt each Friday in the month of April. Order forms can be completed for multiple quantities of T-shirts. Delivery takes approximately 1-2 weeks depending on quantities ordered. Dwight Locke and Ms. Inez Jones By Dorothy Goodrum Contributor
“I am picking and you are a grinning” do you remember this? Last week it was Hee Haw time in McNairy County. Our hats are off to the cast who put on a great show. Grandpa Jones would have been proud. We have some very talented people in our town. Ms. Carolyn Bowers and her son, Darren, made sure the residents had a front row seat for the show. Anthony Huggins, Billy Joe Carroll, Mildred Haverstick, Christine Melvin, Anne Manley, and Inez Jones were the folks who had the seats of honor on Thursday Night. I told Ms. Jones she had a front row seat because they knew she was coming and saved it for her. She said, “Oh go on, you know that is not true I am nobody special”. Well to me she is pretty special. A sweet lady with a pretty smile for me every time I walk in the door is how I would describe Ms. Jones. She and her husband both came to live in our home, and after Mr. Oscar died Ms. Inez still lives here and is one of the sweetest ladies I know. Dwight Locke, who gave us the privilege of living in our home after his accident, assured her that she was in the right seat and that it was saved especially for her. Ms. Jones smiled so sweetly and thanked Dwight and agreed to a picture. Dwight has really been a special person to all of us here at McNairy County Health Care Center. He and his wife, Frieda, have supported us in every way possible since his stay here. What a success story for us to get well and live well. This is our goal here at McHCC and Dwight more than met that goal. He got well and lives such a productive life in our community. Ray Prather was Doc, of course, and all I can say about that is “keep your family doctor”. I am not sure where Ray
got his license but I will stay with Dr. Jim Smith myself. Ray did thank and recognize the residents who came. Thank you Ray, who is also a big supporter of our home. Ray’s dad and uncle both stayed in our home for a time, and he supports our home everyday. We are always much honored to be able to take care of your family and have you come back to offer your thanks and support. To the entire cast - thank you again for a great show. You made our folks laugh and that, my friends, is a good day for me. Until next time.

Dampeer joins Bobcat football
Beware: A dark horse will emerge
By Amanda Lowrance
By Andrew Alexander Sports Writer
Head Sports Writer
The only predictable things about the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship are the facts that Dick Vitale will probably be rooting for Duke, a No. 16 seed probably won’t beat a No. 1 seed, and that somewhere along the line, a team you don’t expect to make much noise in the big dance will probably pull off an upset that will echo through the college basketball world. The mystique and intrigue surrounding March Madness is brought on, mostly, because there’s always that chance that you’ll see a school of 3,000 students knock off a perennial basketball powerhouse. It happens every year. As the parity in college basketball grows evermore apparent each season, mid-majors and small schools across the country get more and more confident when tournament time rolls around. Some recent notable games that ended with David defeating Goliath include, No. 13 Siena downing No. 4 Vanderbilt in the first round of the 2008 tournament, No. 13 Vermont upending No. 4 Syracuse in the first round of the 2005 tournament, No. 6 Duke falling to No. 11 Virginia Commonwealth University in the first round of the 2007 tournament (they also advanced to the Final Four last season as a No. 6 seed), and No. 9 Northern Iowa shocking No. 1 Kansas in the second round of the 2010 tournament (the Jayhawks were also beaten in the first round by No. 14 Bucknell in 2005 and No. 13 Bradley in 2006). There are instances like this every year, so don’t get left holding a worthless bracket after the first and second rounds conclude because some dark horse team trampled all over your eventual national champion, ruining your
The new head football coach of the McNairy Central Bobcats, Charlie Dampeer and his wife, Donna, met and greeted the Bobcat family last Sunday afternoon in the MCHS commons. Parents, players, and fans stood in line and patiently awaited the one-on-one introduction. This venture has been ‘a dream come true’ for the Dampeer family and will be their final move. For many years, the couple has wanted to move to McNairy County. They have made numerous visits but never had the opportunity to plant their roots until now. Donna has been an educator for 13 years and hopes to ap-

ply and have a future junior high teaching position within the county. Their three children have followed in their footsteps. Currently teaching in Iuka, Mississippi, their only daughter went into education, and both of their sons took the coaching path and now coach football in Saltillo, Tenn. and Lincoln, Ala. McNairy County will center the Dampeers among their family, and the two have already set sights on local, available property. While in the process of finding a home, Dampeer has begun training with his team and has become acquainted with assistant coaches Michael Stroup, Brandon Alldredge, Jake Kiser,

McNairy Central’s baseball field is covered with water on what was supposed to be Opening Day for High School baseball and softball across the state. (Top Left) Home plate is nearly completely submerged as rain poured down on McNairy County last Monday.
Opening Day washout By Andrew Alexander Sports Writer
Last Monday was Opening Day for high school baseball and softball teams across the state. Unfortunately for teams in McNairy County, mother nature disagreed. The McNairy Central Bobcats were geared up and ready to play the Fayette-Ware Wildcats at home, but large amounts of rain made the field conditions unplayable. “We tried to fix it. We tried to rake and throw some oil dry out there, but it was too muddy and too sloppy,” Bobcat head coach Brian Franks told the Independent Appeal after the cancellation. “We just couldn’t get it done. We were disappointed, but we’re fired up to play tomorrow and Wednesday at home.”
The Bobcats season opener was rescheduled for last Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. with the junior varsity in line to begin shortly after the conclusion of the varsity game. The game was played after press time. Their original matchup for last Tuesday was scheduled to be played against Madison Academic but had to be pushed back to today at 4:30 p.m. to work in the district contest against FWHS. The Adamsville Cardinals were idle on Opening Day, so their schedule was unaffected by the rainy conditions. Softball teams, on the other hand, were not so lucky. Both, McNairy Central and Adamsville, were rained out of their season opening tournament games at Hardin County. Their games were rescheduled as well. Last Monday’s games were pushed to Tuesday.
Hoops for Hunter Fundraiser to support Tennessee Hemophilia and Bleeding Disorders Foundation (Selmer, Tenn) — Hoops for Hunter is a Basketball Tournament featuring a Car and Motorcycle Cruise-In, all supporting the Tennessee Hemophilia and Bleeding Disorders Foundation (THBDF) which implements programs and services to citizens of Tennessee who suffer from, or are directly affected by those with bleeding disorders. The tournament will be held at the Selmer Civic Center, Saturday, March 31, 2012. Education and assistance programs include Camp Freedom supporting kids ages 7-17. “Camp is a way for children with bleeding disorders to live normally out from under the protective wings of their parents for a week long of adventure and activities,” states Janet Patterson, Special Events Coordinator for THBDF. “It is during camp that these kids learn to self-medicate and begin to take control

of their own care. Camp Freedom is provided to children free of charge made possible through fundraisers such as Hoops for Hunter.” Hoops for Hunter will be held in honor of Hunter Wilson, son of Adam and LeAnn Wilson of Bethel Springs, Tenn. He was diagnosed with severe hemophilia type A at two-days old. Hunter now receives three infusions a week. “Being a toddler, Hemo-
philia can be very hard to cope with; falling, tripping and bumping things may seem minor to most but to a child with a bleeding disorder, even the small bruise can cause major damage. Injuries can cause a lot of pain, joint damage, and, in worst cases, death,” said Hunter’s mother, LeAnn Wilson. “As his parents, we felt alone and that is when we reached out to the THBDF (Parents Empower-
ing Parents Program) where we met other families dealing with the same struggles. This fundraiser is our way of paying it forward to the THBDF.” The Wilsons feel that thanks to THBDF they, as well as Hunter, have made life time connections with other families dealing with the same struggles. Hemophilia is a bleeding disorder that prevents external and internal clotting without the assistance of intravenous medications. It affects approximately 1 in 7,500 male births a year. It is transmitted either through genetic inheritance or as a spontaneous genetic mutation. For more information about this topic visit www. thbdf.org or janet@thbdf.org or join us on Saturday, March 31st to interview the Wilsons in person. Fox joins Bulldogs

Adamsville senior Drake Fox signs a full athletic scholarship to play football for the Cumberland University Bulldogs March 6 alongside his father, Michael Fox, mother Kelly Fox, and coaches Jayte Chapman, Joe Hopper, Brandon Gray, and Renard Woodmore. Fox had a successful career at Adamsville as a four-year letterman. He played on both the offensive and defensive lines. Fox was an honorable mention on the All-West Tenn. Team this year and was also named to the All-District team his junior and senior years with a honorable mention in his sophomore season. When asked why he chose CU over other schools Fox said, “They’re really good at football, and ever since I’ve talked to the coaches and been up there to visit and stuff it’s just felt like home.” Gray, Cardinal Head Football Coach said that Fox’s work ethic, combined with his leadership skills will translate into success at the collegiate level. “He’s the type of kid that you like having out there,” said Gray. “You know when it’s time to go to war, he’s going to be out on the front lines. We’re going to miss him...Drake’s the kind of kid that’s going to get in there, know his role and do his job.” Fox’s grandparents, Glenda Fox and John and Nancy Rice, were also in attendance for the signing.

Lady Bobcat dynamic duo dedicates life to sports By Amanda Lowrance Head Sports Writer
Two Lady Bobcats of McNairy Central High School have spent their lives in basketball and have carried on a legacy passed down from their parents. Kindra Brown, with 13.8 points per game and Chelsea Bodiford, with 15.8 points per game held the top two positions on McNairy County’s leading scorer board for most of the year. Brown grew up in Bethel Springs and has always been very active and engaged in sports. She practically laid down the rattle and picked up a ball and never let go. Sports is something that has always fascinated her. “Ever since Kindra was four years old, she has been playing ball,” said mother, Yolanda Brown. “She has just been very interested in it, plus her father was a big influence.” As a former Lady Bobcat herself, Yolanda played basketball at McNairy Central and graduated in 1982 and father, Dwight Brown played high school football, basketball, and baseball in Corinth, Miss. “When I was four I started playing for Selmer Hoops,” said Brown. “My earliest memory was having my dad as my coach, and he has coached me from four years old until now. He was my inspiration. Without him I would not be where I am today. He always saw something in me that was further and he kept pushing me harder.” One major highlight from this year’s basketball season was on the road against Chester County. Brown kept the team alive after a rough start by sinking two confident, crucial 3-pointers in overtime to win the game for the Lady Bobcats by one point. “Kindra is a good ball handler and has improved on her scoring and three-point shots,” said Lady Bobcat head coach Jerry Lott. “This year she could not only take it inside and score but she could pull up and shoot threes outside for us too. She has had a well-rounded game the last couple of years.” Brown’s career stats consist of 778 points – 398 in her senior year alone, 284 rebounds, 265 assists, 182 steals, and five blocks. At the end of this season, Brown had the most team assists with 147 and steals with 84. “Kindra is so outgoing in everything she does,” said her mother, “She is a listener and a leader. She loves the game and is not just about herself. She is about the whole team.” She has over 14 years dedicated to basketball and softball and tacked on soccer as a third sport, which was being introduced in the county on the high school level during her freshmen year of high school. “Once she decides to do something, she figures out a way to get it done,” said MCHS softball coach Mellanie Surratt. “The feeling of success drives Kindra to work harder.” Future plans have Brown headed toward college basketball and a career in physical therapy. Contacts from Blue Mountain College, Northeast Alabama Community College, and Austin Peay State University have reached out to Brown, but she has not committed yet. Brown is currently leading the Lady Bobcats on the mound for her last and final softball season. “She is going to be a vital part of our pitching rotation,” said Surratt. “Kindra can play pretty much anywhere. We are going to work her in the outfield this year due to injuries, but she can also play shortstop and third as well. This year I think she is really going to show her speed in the outfield.” “My parents taught me to work hard and to reach beyond and that’s what I am going to do,” said Brown. Across the county in Michie, Bodiford began her basketball venture at the age of six and softball at about four years old.
“Even when Chelsea was little, she never played with dolls,” said father Richie Bodiford. “She just picked up balls instead of dolls.” Bodiford recalls her earliest memory to be when her “Mammaw” Stutts was babysitting her. Stutts would throw pitches to her while she practiced swinging and hitting. Her parents also played a big role along the way. Richie coached Junior Pro until she reached seventh grade and her mother, Lorrie Bodiford, coached her in junior high at Michie. “She started playing Junior Pro at Michie when she was in the first grade,” said her mother. “Our whole family has always been interested in sports.” Mr. and Mrs. Bodiford played basketball at McNairy Central and graduated in 1983 and 1985. Mr. Bodiford carried his career through to Freed Hardeman University and played in college. “My dad has been my inspiration,” said Bodiford. “He has helped me all these years.” Bodiford’s career stats tout 1,322 career points – 490 in her senior year alone, 351 rebounds, 197 steals, 165 assists, and 42 blocks. Joining the MCHS 1,000 Point Club in November 2011, Bodiford reached 1,322 points at the end of her career, making her second all-time in scoring and fifth all-time scoring in a season at the end of her senior year with 490 points. “Chelsea was a good three-point shooter when she came to our program and has improved every year.” said Lott. “She has worked hard and spends hours at a time in the gym working on her three-point shots.” In 2010, Bodiford broke the record for most 3-pointers made in a single game at McNairy Central by drilling six in a game. She later tied that record in 2011. She has also broken most 3-pointers in a season in her junior year with 65 three-point shots and most 3-pointers in a career which adds up to 189 outside baskets. “She has broken every three-point record and is obviously one of the best three-point shooters we have had in our program,” said Lott. “People found out she was a good three-point shooter and the other teams extended the defense out to the three-point line, so she had to improve on taking the ball to the basket in the last couple of years.” Bodiford has committed to play basketball at Union University for the Lady Bulldogs, who are currently ranked No. 2 in the nation with a record of 31-2 and have won four NAIA National Championships in the last seven years. “Chelsea has a good attitude and is hard working,” said her parents. “She is very coachable and is going to work hard and do what you tell her to do.” As of today, she is undecided on what her major will be going into college but is considering education or physical therapy. Softball season has engaged, and Bodiford holds a strong position at shortstop where the team feels comfortable with her in that position. Brown and Bodiford share the same ‘best memory ever’ and it was in their junior year when the pair helped the Lady Bobcats to win first place in the District 14-AA Tournament and assisted in placing runner-up in the region tournament before the team advanced to substate. Both players are thankful for all the people and coaches that have helped them to reach the next level of their careers. “They are both fine young ladies and have worked hard to improve their game,” said Lott. “I’m sure they are both going to excel at the next level too.” Many memories have been made, and there are many more to come. Bringing such a strong force together at MCHS by joining two players from opposite ends of the county, these two ladies have touched many hearts with their dedication and courage.

bracket in the process. Butler University has been victimizing people’s brackets for the last two seasons. The Bulldogs have reached the NCAA Finals two years in a row, once as a No. 5 seed and once as a No. 8. Fortunately for some, Butler did not make this year’s tournament. Here are a few teams to consider as potential threats to your hopes of predicting the outcome of this year’s tournament. Murray State: The Racers are 30-1 entering the tournament and many “experts” feel like they’ve been underseeded. While a win in the first round

(Right) Senior Drew Griswell hurls a pitch toward the plate early in Adamsville’s scrimmage against Hardin County. for No. 6 Murray State wouldn’t be an upset, a win in any of the following rounds would be. The Racers shot 41 percent from behind the arc in the regular season, won 17 road games while knocking off their only three top 50 opponents, and have outscored teams by double-digits in each of their 30 wins. Davidson: Here’s a team that’s already proven its worth. The Wildcats picked up a huge win for their program early in the season with a victory over Kansas at Phog Allen Fieldhouse, where few teams walk out with a road win. Davidson finished the year 12-5 in away games and managed to outscore their opponents by more than 13 points per game. In 2008, they advanced all the way to the Elite 8 as a 10-seed. Wichita State: Shockingly enough,
the Shockers come into the tournament as a No. 5 seed and will have a tough go of it in the first round with a matchup against last year’s dark horse, VCU. Barring an upset in the first round, Wichita State has the talent and depth to be this year’s Butler. They have five seniors on their roster. On top of the experience factor, they are deadly from downtown, shooting 49 percent from 3-point land during the regular season. Belmont: The Bruins are primed to make a run in the Midwest. If they can get past Georgetown in the first round, they’ll be surrounded by bubble teams that some consider unworthy of their tournament berths. Belmont finished the regular season as champions of the Atlantic Sun Conference with a 27-7 record. They played Duke in their sea-
son opener and lost by only one. They score in bunches, averaging more than 81 points per game and are led by three seniors. St. Mary’s: While the Gaels have had their share of tournament success in recent years (knocked off No. 7 Richmond and No. 2 Villanova in 2010), this year may be their legitimate shot at a national title. St. Mary’s was led by junior guard sensation, Matthew Dellavedova, who averaged more than 15 points and six assists per game on the way to winning the West Coast Conference regular season and tournament championship. As a team, they shoot 73 percent from the free-throw line and have beaten four top 50 teams already. New Mexico: Last, but not least, the Lobos of New Mexico could pose a big

and Scott Akin. Taking the new, hub position of the Bobcat Football Team, Dampeer has brought new ideas and coaching techniques to McNairy Central. “Everything will change,” said Dampeer. “Every head coach has different thoughts on the way he wants to do things, and the program will be wide open from now on.” The Bobcats will begin practice in late spring and will continuously work hard throughout the summer. Dampeer is approaching 30 years in coaching football and has sent teams to the playoffs that have never been to the playoffs before. This season he hopes to, at least, turn McNairy Central’s previous 2-8 record into a winning one. “He comes with a lot of experience and he seems enthusiastic about building McNairy Central football,” said Van McMahan, father of freshman quarterback Peyton McMahan. The program has welcomed Dampeer with open arms and feels that he is the right person for the job. “I think he is a good guy and he is going to do good here,” said Jeff Vaughn, father of freshman lineman Marco Vaughn. “He seems to have his priorities straight. He will be a good coach and I looking forward to working with him.” This marks Dampeer’s ninth season as a head coach, and he has full confidence in a successful run with MCHS. Less than 160 days remain and the timer counts down to the 2012 season kick off.
threat to every team in the West. UNM has wins over six top 50 teams and outscores its opponents by an average of 14 points. They’re a great road team, having won 13 of their 17 contests away from Albuquerque. They also shoot 39 percent from the foul line and 71 percent from long distance. You may choose not to heed my warning. You may even choose to go chalk through your whole bracket, but I assure you; you’ll kick yourself in the end. Make no mistake, I’m not claiming to have the secret to bracket perfection, but I know a capable underdog when I see one. Not all of the abovementioned teams will be victorious. As a matter of fact, they all might lose, but be wary...there will be plenty of upsets to go around.

Adamsville hosts softball Play-Day By Amanda Lowrance Head Sports Writer
The Adamsville Lady Cardinals hosted their 12th Adamsville High School Softball Play-Day last Saturday, featuring over 15 teams from throughout West Tenn. Games began early (9 a.m.) and ran through sundown on four different fields, the softball field at AHS and all three fields at Buford Pusser Memorial Park, and the day’s weather presented great conditions for competition. “We were able to get a pretty day without any rain and had a lot of teams come out,” said Lady Cardinal head coach Todd McGee. “We played a lot of split teams either at the same time or really close to the same time.” The day was all about getting out on the field amongst competition to test this season’s players
before regular season play. The McNairy Central Lady Bobcats were one of the 16 teams to participate in the daylong event. “It was a good day to get out on the field and play in pretty weather,” said Lady Bobcat head coach Mellanie Surratt. “We made errors and it’s better to make them early in the season. The quicker we make our errors and work through them, the quicker we will be playing the caliber ball we want to play.” At the end of the day the coaches and players had a better idea of what to work on and what to expect in the upcoming season without these games affecting their records. The parents and the players operated the concession stands and gates. Adamsville Recreation & Parks Department’s Bubba Martin, Ted Hughes, and ‘Porkchop’ Young helped prepare the fields after a couple days of rain. McGee humbly thanked everyone involved with organizing the event and looks forward to a 13th year.

ACT Now By Aaron Friend
The ACT is much more than just a test. It is the culmination of many students’ entire high school career. The results of this test will forever be associated with the person that undertakes this task. The ACT is also a gateway into the higher levels of learning provided by universities. And it is the job of many students to try and achieve these higher levels of learning. Furthermore, the ACT is capable of lending a free ride to those students who score well enough on the ACT to college. This year, McNairy Central High School will be giving a free ACT test to its students on March 20. Thus, it is important to find out what a couple of people from MCHS have to say about this test. First, however, it is crucial to discover some of the history of the ACT. Founded in 1959, the ACT originally stood for “American College Testing.” However, in 1996, the organization shortened its name to just “ACT.” This change was made due to the fact that the organization began to offer a wide variety of programs and services the organization provides beyond college entrance testing. Also, the ACT has always been a non-profit orga-
nization, dating all the way back to 1960. The ACT was created for two things: “to help students make better decisions about which colleges to attend and which programs to study” and “to provide information helpful to colleges both in the process of admitting students and in ensuring their success after enrollment.” One person who was willing to share their thoughts about the upcoming ACT was junior Brian Thacker. Thacker, who has already taken the ACT twice, said that the test was very difficult. Thacker also commented that the ACT was an unnecessary evaluation of a student’s intellectual ability. He said that students should be looked at for their overall grade point average, rather than a timed test. Also, Thacker elucidated on the studying process that he undertook. He said that he did various things, including buying an ACT preparation book, taking ACT practice tests, using ACT flashcards, and buying a geometry practice book. Lastly, Thacker said that he hopes to score a thirty on his ACT; however, he would love to score a thirty-six. Thacker’s reasoning was that he wants to be able to score as high as
possible on the ACT, in order to present himself with more opportunities. Since I am also a junior, I would like to share my thoughts about the upcoming ACT. Although I have not taken the ACT, I am looking forward to this test. I am not so much looking forward to taking the test, but I am looking forward to the possible opportunities that the ACT presents. I am hoping to score between a twenty-five and a thirty, but, just like Thacker, I would be perfectly fine with scoring a thirty-six on the test. In conclusion, the ACT is a golden opportunity for students to access higher levels of education. Although many students dread taking the ACT, it is an important part of the high school experience.

Midterms By Kaitlyn Boggs
Midterms and End of Course testing are a big deal at MCHS. They count as a huge part of your final grade for that semester. Many students find that when it comes time for them to take the test they don’t really know how to study. Everyone learns different ways. So here are a few tips to help everyone prepare for that big test in their life. People in general learn three different ways. Most people learn by seeing, hearing, or even moving. People that learn by seeing learn the best if the information they need to learn is written out or pictured. If you are a visual learner then you need to write down the information and sit in a quiet room. It helps if you look at the teacher and draw the information if possible. If you learn by hearing then try reading out loud. Listen to the teacher when they teach. When you take notes go home and summarize the notes out loud by highlighting the important parts. Talk to other people in the class about the notes. If you are one of those people that think you need to listen to music while you study or if you walk around or if you can’t sit still, then you are probably a haptic learner. You can study by highlighting information. Try making it more physical by studying while moving or doing something else. Haptic
learners can learn by visualizing everything you do. Skim over your material first and then start studying. A good studying technique is flash cards. Flashcards can be adapter to any form of learning. Flashcards are very useful. They use repetition. First you write the information down and then you can constantly go through the deck. This is obviously useful for visual learners, but it can also help auditory learners. They can say everything out loud. Haptic learners can also use this. They have the main points already on a card. They can highlight if necessary. Taking notes, listening in class, and then reviewing the information within twenty-four hours of the lesson can really help solidify the information in you mind. If you feel as if you can’t learn anymore take a break and come back later. Don’t stress over tests, and don’t wait till the last minute to study. Study the information of the test over a period of time instead of cramming. Review the information before the test. Bottom line, everyone learns differently and it takes you have to learn how to study, but these are some tips to help you prepare for your next big test.

Bethel Springs students, teachers, and staff are collecting expired coupons to send to our military troops and their families overseas. Lots of teachers and parents at our school use coupons. Instead of throwing them away after they expire, they are being collected, clipped, and mailed. Coups For Troops was created by a stay-at-home mom, trying to save money for her family by couponing. Being a strong supporter of the US military, she wanted to assist those that serve. At Coups For Troops, the goal is to help make the lives of soldiers and their families a little easier by shipping coupons right to their door. Commissaries overseas accept manufacturer coupons up to six months past the expiration date. If you would like to help you can adopt a military family through the Direct Mail program or by sending your coupons to a Coups for Troops location. Since ancient times, the Chinese New Year was considered as the time to honor ancestors and a time to organize family gatherings and grand feasts. Chinese New Year begins according to the Chinese calendar which consists of both Gregorian and lunar-solar calendar systems. Because the track of the new moon changes from year to year, Chinese New Year can begin anytime between late January and midFebruary. To promote cultural awareness, students in Mrs. Stroup and Mrs. Teague’s third grade classrooms have been studying cultures around the world. The week of Jan. 23, the students enjoyed participating in several different activities to begin the celebration of the Chinese New Year, the Year of the Dragon. Both classrooms created dragon art projects and displayed them in the halls.
