Trespass charge County fundraisers take in $65,000 in April adds trouble for suspended officer By Christen Coulon Editor

Suspended Bethel Springs policeman Bandy Burney was cited for criminal trespass by the Selmer Police. According to a copy of the complaint provided by the department, Burney was found riding a four wheeler on city property. Patrolman Kim Findley was the responding officer. Burney’s case is scheduled to be heard on May 10 in McNairy County General Sessions Court. Under state law, he could face up to 30 days in jail and a fine of up to $50. Burney was suspended with pay by the Bethel Springs Board of Aldermen at their March meeting after Tiffany Shoate charged him with improper touching after he allegedly patted her on the shoulder during a traffic stop. Burney denied that he touched Shoate. Shoate filed a complaint with the City of Bethel Springs and the McNairy County Sheriff’s Department. Bethel Springs Mayor Kay Cox told the April Board of Aldermen meeting that no action has been taken on either complaint.

Schools. The Chester County Eagles topped the McNairy Central Bobcats in a close championship game. Despite their loss the Bobcats treated the crowd to some fantastic baseball. The tournament was well attended and raised more than $3,400 for both McNairy County High School baseball teams.

In recent weeks there have been several fundraising events which combined have raised more than $65,000 for the community. Most recently, the Carl Perkins Center held its Dancing with the McNairy Stars fundraising campaign which according to Luke DeLaVergne, the center’s county director, brought in more than $36,000. The event culminated with a performance from local stars last Saturday at and event which was as funny as it was entertaining. This year’s total topped the organization’s annual goal for the campaign by more than $3,000. On April 14, Jesus Cares held its annual Spring Fling event at the Selmer Community Center. The event was attended by more than 400 people and raised more than $25,000 for the charity. Money from this event is still being counted and that figure could rise, Jesus Cares President Jim Gray told Independent Appeal last Monday. April 14 also marked the championship game of the Independent Appeal Baseball Spectacular. Discussions are currently underway between University of Tennessee Martin, The Pink Palace and local officials who are working on a solution to make Coon Creek Science Center more accessible to the public while maintaining the scientific integrity of the site. The Tennessee River Old Iron Tractor Club held its O.F. Wagoner Memorial Tractor Show last Saturday at the Stantonville Community Center. The event kicked of around 5 a.m. and featured more than 92 pieces including tractors, engines and miniatures as well as music and food. “We are very pleased with the show, said Dickey Meek, event organizer. “This is the biggest show that we have ever had.” With several hundred people attending, Meek said that he was happy with the turnout and said that the cold and overcast April day with temps topping out near 50 was perfect weather for the event. “This is our first year and we are just tickled by the way everything turned out,” Meek said. Meek commended the cooking of the Smokehouse Rednecks who prepared smoked chicken plates for the event. “Those boys can cook,” Meek said. Due to the success of this year’s show, it is likely that this will become an annual event with those at the club to start looking at next year’s show. “I hope we to have a bigger turnout next year,” Meek said.

Eastview youth step up to better community By Jeff Whitten Head News Writer

Citizens and youth of Eastview appeared before the Board of Aldermen at its April 17 meeting to propose a partnership with the city for various improvements and repairs to the park. Luke Robbins, a teenager, proposed fixing the basketball goal, new swing sets and slides and placing a bench with a plaque honoring Daddy Dud Richard and Jean Ingram. In response to a concern about compliance raised by board member Lucy Martin, Alderman Elvis Butler said that any changes to the park have to be improvements. “You cannot fall backwards, it has to be an improvement. It has to remain like it is or be improved on account of those parks and recreation grants we got. You can’t drop

anything off,” he said. Stacy Thompson, her husband Dwayne and their daughter Elizabeth also spoke to the board on this topic. “We’ve got about 15 to 20 kids and young adults that go to Eastview Baptist and they want to redo the park. They said we’re the only park in the county that’s not fixed…So, we want to do something where the kids will have somewhere to go. We’ve noticed on Sunday even Chewalla Baptist and some of the other churches have been coming to play ball, so we want to fix it to where lots of other people can come also, few churches can come and play,” Stacy said. Thompson also proposed getting new swings, as well as new paint for the trash cans. The city has budgeted $20,000 for parks, Smith said. “We’ve been aiming to do something to the

slides and swings for a while,” Mayor Jessie Robbins said. “I think we can help you,” added Alderman Burl Sutton. “What your youth department is wanting to do is extraordinary and they’re to be commended for wanting to do that,” said board member Lucy Martin. “What about donations, do y’all got a problem with that?” Stacy asked. In other news from the meeting, the board of Aldermen voted to hire Brawner Vanstory, an accounting firm with offices in Corinth and Booneville, Miss. for auditing services. This firm has done auditing for the city in past years. Half of their $6,500 fee comes from the city budget and half from the water department. Alderman Elvis Butler said that the meeting with the city’s accountant had been cancelled.

The commission approved a new Parks and Recreation Board. The board will meet monthly and operate under guidelines set by the Tennessee Department of the Environment and Conservation. Adamsville once had a Parks and Recreation Board, but it has been defunct for a while, according to Leckner. This board will help in meeting benchmarks for grants.

The Michie mayor and board of aldermen met last Monday in regular session and discussed the possibility of seeking bids to resurface the parking lot at the community center extending under the bleachers at the ballpark. “There is a lot of grass under the bleachers so if we get bids on repaving the lot we might as well see what the costs would be to expand to the bleachers,” said Alderman Jed Baker. “We need to specify exactly what area needs to be paved and mark it,” said Alderman Jim Merry. “Can we use crusher rock under the bleachers?,” said Mayor Mike Glisson. “Crusher rock has to be maintained so we may be better off paving,” said Alderman David Baker. The mayor and aldermen will meet this week to mark off the area they wish to get bids for repaving and seek bids later to determine the feasibility of the project. Fire Chief Shirley Clark reported issues with a brush truck, leading to the recent purchase of a five speed ‘76 Chevy 8 cylinder truck that meets the specifications the fire department needs with some minor modifications. “I bought this truck for $2,800 out of my budget and with some minor expenses we will be able to make this truck serviceable for grass fires. I just want the city to know that no expenses will be required from the city budget for this, but wanted to make you aware,” said Clark. The city served as the command post for the recent Civil War Reenactment and alderman Merry inquired about the success of the post. “The Tennessee Emergency Management Association (TEMA) complimented all of our county volunteers for working together so well. We had over 90 patients on Saturday, most were heat related injuries as people were not properly hydrated, two thrown off horses and other minor injuries,” said Clark. “We always work together so well in this county and things ran very smoothly. Fire Chief Anthony Carr responded when we had issues with serving food and helped us serve over 100 meals per day. All was very organized,” said Clark. Mayor Glisson inquired about the possibility of a grant for tornado sirens, and Clark reported she would see County Emergency Management Director Rudy Moore this week and inquire. “Many residents are asking me about a warning system in the community,” said Glisson. In old business, the board passed the meeting minutes of the March 26 meeting and adjourned.

The Adamsville City Commission approved a consulting contract that will help the city determine if it is feasible to run its vehicles on natural gas at its April 16 meeting. The commission approved a consulting contract with D2 Energy Consultants for $98 per hour. “What we are looking to do with this situation is to expand their role in research and development for the city for our natural gas utility. We believe this will be a good partnership for us to move forward and try to market us a lot better than what we are and look at some new technologies that we can use to enhance the utility department. We’re looking basically at doing something brand new that nobody around here has done and we believe that D2 will help us get over that edge,” Mayor David Leckner told the meeting. The purpose of the meeting was to create an accurate list of city assets to be depreciated. Members of the board gave examples of items that should not be on the list at last month’s meeting. Though the department is running a cash surplus, depreciation has thrown it into the red in past years and forced it to raise water rates last year. The board made various amendments to its budget at the meeting. Line items for the audit was increased from $3,200 to $3,250, for an accounting computer program from $4,000 to $7,000, Certified Municipal Financial Officer training went from $1,200 to $2,200, office supplies went from $500 to $1,000 and expenditures for traffic lights increased from $1,200 to $1,900. The latter increase was because the lights had to be worked on twice, according to City Recorder Emodene Smith.

The subject of interest is chosen by the students and is something that the seniors have never done before, so in each project, the student is thoroughly learning something new. Grades are given throughout the year in English class in what the teachers call the four Ps: paper, product, portfolio, and presentations. The senior project committee made up of about 9 or 10 chairmen include teachers such as Lin Smith, who handles all the equipment, technology, and scoring, Lisa Forsythe, who handles all the scheduling, and Molly Cheshier, who guides resource class seniors. “The importance of senior projects is to get

them to put together all of the skills that they need in the real world: time management, organization, speaking in front of people, following through, and finishing,” said Business Technology instructor Lisa Forsythe. “Between 120 and 130 judges come in from the community. Some of the judges are retired educators, businessmen, on-the-clock employees, homemakers, and church members.” Last Wednesday and Thursday, these seniors and judges spent the school day with 11 ongoing, concurrent sessions each day. In every session there are four to five judges scheduled. The students prepare and polish up their presentations weeks in advance and the judges observe and grade the seniors on a scale of one to five for time, presence, organization, voice/ diction, knowledge, and visuals. Each student must present their product in a minimum of five

minutes while making proper eye contact, tone, and volume, wearing proper attire fitting for the product, displaying and demonstrating their knowledge gained, and showing its relevance for the future. Music, crafts, and technical skills are commonly found in these projects but over the decade spent administering senior projects a few subjects have been omitted for safety precautions such as skydiving, flying an airplane, and racecar driving. New subject ideas for senior projects emerged this year such as Lydia Sosa’s salsa dancing, Josh Kennedy’s gold testing, Allie Pitts’ costume design, Sarah Beth Stephen’s rebuilt Habitat for Humanity house, Jessica Polk’s Japanese cuisine, Brady Dancer’s haunted house design, Lindsey Young’s crafted metal jewelry, Jake Whitaker’s built barbeque trailer and grill, and Julie Smith’s

Bethel Springs reviews bids on new water meters, seeks bush hog By Jeff Whitten Head News Writer

C & S Construction was awarded the contract for installing new water meters in Bethel Springs at a called meeting of the board of Aldermen April 16. The bids had been opened at another called meeting on April 13. C & S’s bid for the 225 new water meters was $81,895. The only other bidder was American Utility Contractors at $109,882. The meters will be funded by an $80,000 disaster grant. Not everyone will get one of the new meters which will be read by GPS, Mayor Kay Cox

told the regular monthly meeting of the board on April 9. The town does not have sufficient money to buy new meters for all customers, Cox said. About a quarter of existing meters are good ones, she told the meeting. The people on the sewer and those who have older meters will get the new ones. Installation will begin over the next few weeks and should conclude around the beginning of June, according to Bethel Springs water department head Bennie Moore. “The new meters will be accurate. If you have an old meter and it has not been accurate,

your water bill may be higher. It could be lower or it may be the same,” Cox told the audience. Cox said the old meters may have been leaky and that the new meters will also eliminate human error. In other news from the meeting, Cox said that the Street Department was still cleaning ditches and had progressed to Buena Vista Road. She also told the crowd that anyone who stops up the sewer with material that does not belong there will have to pay for it. “You’re gonna have to pay for it and it will not be cheap. We’re not talking $10 or $15, we’re talking maybe $1,500 or

more,” Cox said. Cox announced that Shane Finley resigned from the Street Department. L. C. Foust was hired by the board to replace him. The Street Department will do its own mowing this year to cut down on costs, Cox said. The town previously bought a tractor and a bush hog, but it is a pull behind bush hog, rather than a side mounted bush hog, which will be necessary. The city has advertised in the paper for the bush hog, Cox said. They are seeking to buy a used bush hog, which generally cost around $5,000, according to Alderman John Wood.

Senior Molly Weatherford has left behind a legacy of the 2012 MCHS Band and her memories of the time spent throughout her high school career. Drawing is something that Weatherford has always grasped but painting was new especially on such a large canvas as what used to be a blemished band storage unit. Renowned Rockabilly artist, Brian Tull was able to guide Weatherford and she conquered something new and exciting. As the time grew closer to presentations the seniors began to appreciate all their effort and hard work and were able to take a sigh of relief after the completion of their projects. All that’s left now is to count down the days until graduation, but they will always remember what was learned during their senior projects.

The Scholar-Athlete Award in Honor of Carolyn Gooch Submitted Photo

Michie School’s 2012 Scholar-Athlete Award belongs to Grayson Chandler, son of Trent and Donna Chandler and Robin Moore, daughter of Meta Griswell and Tedford Moore. The school’s most prestigious award was established in March 1986 in honor of Carolyn Gooch, a nationally acclaimed biologist with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Ms. Gooch was valedictorian of the 1953 Michie High School graduating class, a basketball standout, and a native of the Michie Community. Each year the two top eighth grade students who have excelled both academically and athletically are named for the award.

Challenges, Children, Cancer and Changes By Rachel Burns

Looking back over the days of my life this year has been challenging. I am now eighteen years old, a senior in high school, and looking back is constant. After graduation, my whole life will change. I remember first walking into McNairy Central High School my freshman year. I was scared about many things, but then again, I enjoyed these nervous feeling because I got to experience them. During high school, I have completely changed and loved it. I have been involved and given back to my community multiple times over these

past four years and hope to continue to do so. Being involved has changed my entire perspective on life and pursuit of happiness. I am involved in many clubs throughout my high school. I am the National Honor Society Reporter, the Journalism Newspaper Editor, a Fellowship of Christian Athletes Council Member, Student Government Association Representative, Chewalla Baptist Church Youth Member, and Volleyball Varsity Co-Captain. We don’t see many there. Sometimes I see a cat. They are a problem in the city. They come in the museum all the time lookin’ for food.”

Samantha Finley (Michie): “It’s a big problem. It depends on where you’re at but they need to take care of it. It’s real big in the cotton bottoms and all over the place.”

Misty Sowell (Adamsville): “Well, I’ve got one stray animal now. Her name is Smiley. She was dropped off on me. I get pregnant female dogs dropped off all the time. Male dogs, puppies, all the time. Old Union is one of the main roads they drop ‘em on, constantly.”

Angela DeSimone (Selmer): “Around our house, pretty bad. We have garbage tore up by stray dogs. We have our own pet in the back and she’s always being harassed by other animals. We are having to run other animals out of our yard. It’s a pretty big problem where we’re at.”

One more novel: All Over but the Shoutin’ by Molly Moore Columnist

Memoirs are not what I usually read, but a good friend gave this a big thumbs up several years ago, and I believed MOORE her. The real reason I could not put this down is because it is an underdog story, and I am a real sucker for an underdog. Rick Bragg’s memory is clear. He is dead on in his description of life in the rural south during the sixties. I would not know personally, but I have heard

enough stories to recognize it when I see it. Bragg describes his life growing up dirt poor in rural north Alabama. His mother is the superstar of the book and the real reason he finally decided to tell his story. Clearly, the author is a success, but he struggles to accept this. The life he lived as a poor kid in Alabama has had an effect on his self-worth, but he desperately wants his mother to see she did not fail his brothers or him. By the end of the first chapter I was thinking to myself, I know these people. They are in the stories my parents tell and the relatives I never got to meet. My people are not the mint-julep

southerners. No, my relatives are far more interesting than that. The people I am describing are so clear in my mind today, I can almost see them. They are picking cotton and praying they get a coke on Saturday (even though it would be split with little sister). My long ago family resembles the one I read about on these pages. They were shaped by the life they lived and the ground they tilled. Rick Bragg is clearly one of the best writers of our time. Am I partial because I am from these rural parts? Possibly. But I like to think the real reason this memoir is special, is because we all have a universal need to feel.

Mrs. Wanda Sue Ledford Cox, age 54 of Middleton, departed this life Tuesday afternoon, April 17, 2012 at her home. Mrs. Cox was born in Middleton on June 8, 1957 to Syble Davis Ledford of Middleton, who survives, and the late Eutril Layton “Rusty” Leford. She was united in marriage to Larry Wayne Cox, who survives, November 24, 1984. Having lived all her life in Middleton, she worked for 18 years as a teacher’s aide and assistant librarian at Middleton Elementary School and was a member of the Pocahontas First Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir and was most recently active with the youth. She loved gardening and growing flowers. Funeral services were held Friday, April 20, 2012 at Shackelford Funeral Directors’ Middleton Chapel with Steve McKee officiating. Burial followed in Reaves Cemetery in Middleton. In addition to her husband and mother, Mrs. Cox leaves as her survivors two daughters, Ashley Cox Dixon and husband Jason of Collierville and Faralee Cox Garland and husband John of Arlington; a brother, Dale Ledford of Brownsville; and two grandchildren, Olivia Garland of Arlington and Landry Garland of Arlington. Along with her father, she is preceded in death by a brother, Donald Ledford. Memorials may be sent to the American Cancer Society.

Larry Watson

Marvin Neil Haubrich was born December 29, 1925 in Waupaca County, WI. He was united in marriage to Helen Louise Taylor on December, 28 1951. He was a 1944 Army veteran and a member of the New Bethel Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Mr Haubrich was the owner of Haubrich and Son, with sales in maple syrup, produce and trucking. His hobby was restoring antique cars and showing them. Mr. Haubrich departed this life on April 18, 2012 in Jackson, TN at the age of 86 years, 3 months, 20 days. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Helen Louise Haubrich of Selmer, TN; two daughters, Brenda Glasier and husband Charles of Little Rock, AR, Barbara Whitmer and husband Josh of Brentwood, TN; a son, James Haubrich and wife Kerri of Selmer, TN; four grandchildren, Kristin Wheeler of Memphis, TN, Taylor Haubrich and wife Kaleigh of Hampton, VA, Grant Whitmer of Brentwood, TN, Grace Whitmer of Brentwood, TN; three sisters, Edna Hogan of Milwaukee, WI, Helen Thompson and husband Alvin of Racine, WI, Juli Scott and husband Larry of Clintonville, WI and a host of nieces and nephews. Mr. Haubrich was preceded in death his parents, John M. Haubrich and Voilet Lillian Zelmer Lembke; and three brothers, Norman Haubrich, James Lembke and Hermon Lembke; and a brother-in-law, Ray Hogan. Visitation was held on Friday, April 20, 2012 from 5 - 9 p.m. and services were held on Saturday, April 21, 2012 at 11 a.m. All held at Shackelford Funeral Directors in Selmer, Tennessee, Rev. Jeff Powell officiated. Burial followed in the Lake Hill Memorial Gardens at Bethel Springs, Tennessee.

Larry Watson was born December 4, 1952 in Selmer, TN, the son of the late Johnny Frank and Audrey Nell Matlock Watson. He was united in marriage to Sherry Mathis on August 4, 1979. Larry was a self-employed carpenter, electrician and plumber. He was a member of the Good Hope Baptist Church in Adamsville, Tennessee, a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, a Civil War reenactor for several years and an avid outdoorsman. Mr. Watson departed this life on April 16, 2012 in Stantonville, Tennessee at the age of 59 years, 4 months, 12 days. He is survived by his wife Sherry Watson of Stantonville, TN; two sons, Logan Watson of Stantonville, TN, Ross Watson and wife, Lauren McFalls Watson of Savannah, TN; two sisters, Johnnie Marie King and husband Texas of Selmer, TN, Marie Frances Tucker and husband Tony of Sardis, TN and 8 nieces and nephews and 8 great nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Watson was preceded in death by a sister, Jackie Nell Watson. Services were held on April 18, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Good Hope Baptist Church in Adamsville, Tennessee, with Tim Elrod officiating. Burial will follow in the Good Hope Cemetery in Adamsville, Tennessee.

Alton Dickerson Alton Dickerson, age 78 of Corinth, MS, was born February 26, 1934 in McNairy County, the son of late Victor and Pearl Moore Dickerson. Mr. Dickerson was Church of Christ in faith and a Mason. He was a truck driver for Dean Truck Line and Littco of Corinth, MS. He was married to Patricia Brown on March 5, 1952 who preceded him in death on November 21, 2011. Mr. Dickerson departed this life on April 18, 2012. He is survived by a daughter, Charlotte Bell of Corinth, MS; a daughter-inlaw, Sandra Dickerson Latch of Corinth, MS; a sister, Christine Lambert and husband Jack of Selmer, TN; four grandchildren, Trinity Ingle of Corinth, MS, Jeremy Bell of West Point, MS, Kristin Bell of West Piont, MS and Greg Bell of Starkville, MS; three great grandchildren, Gavin Ingle, Jules Ingle and Zoe Bell and a host of nephews. Mr. Dickerson is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a son, Larry Dickerson; a sister, Anniece Rickman; and a son-in-law, Stan Bell. Services were held on Friday, April 20, 2012 at 3 p.m. at Shackelford Funeral Directors in Acton, Tennessee. Burial followed in the Liberty Cemetery in Michie, Tennessee. Pallbearers were Jeff Lambert, Mike Lambert, Greg Lambert, Brent Lambert, Phillip Burkes, Johnny Doles. Honorary pallbearers will be the staff of Alliance Hospice. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Dorthena Cox Estes Dorthena Cox Estes, age 90 of Selmer, TN, passed from this life on April 17, 2012 at her home. She was born on May 26, 1921, in McNairy County to the late Anderson and Dora Crum Cox. Mrs. Estes was an Elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Selmer. She was Deputy Clerk and Master in the McNairy County Chancery Court before retirement. She loved playing golf and was the Ladies’ Club Champion many times at the Selmer Golf and Country Club. Mrs. Estes is survived by her son, Tommy Estes, and wife Becky of Nashville, TN; three grandchildren, Andrew Estes and wife Maike, Bradley Estes, and Sam Estes; and a great grandchild, Jonathan Estes. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Estes was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Estes, and her siblings, Belva Luttrell, Hazel Phillips, Ola Dee Curtis, Bessie Fay Tedford, Willard Cox, Edward Cox and Eber Cox. Visitation was held from 5 - 8 p.m. on Friday, April 20, 2012 and on Saturday, April 21, 2012, from 11 a.m. until the service at 1 p.m., all held at Shackelford Funeral Directors of Selmer, TN. Rev. community EVENTS • April is Child Abuse Prevention Month This year’s theme is “It’s Time to Talk About Child Abuse.” With recent events involving child abuse being revealed at major public universities, in the military, and within religious institutions, there has never been a more important time for McNairy County to talk about child abuse. There are many ways to prevent abuse and one primary method is to ensure that potential perpetrators know that our community will stand unified against abuse and work diligently to eradicate harmful behavior against our children. April is child abuse prevention month. One way that local businesses can send a message to the community that they stand together to fight child abuse in McNairy County is to have a special “casual” day for employees by allowing employees to wear this “It’s Time to Talk” Tshirt each Friday in the month of April. Order forms can be completed for multiple quantities of T-shirts. Delivery takes approximately 1-2 weeks depending on quantities ordered. Bobcats outlast Cardinals By Andrew Alexander Sports Writer

Before last Thursday night, the Bobcats had not beaten the Cardinals on the baseball field since March 13, 2006. After a controversial finish, McNairy Central tasted victory over its nemesis for the first time in over six years, and Head Coach Brian Franks was happy to have the proverbial monkey off his back. “Finally got them,” Bobcat head coach Brain Franks said after the game. “Adamsville’s got a great ball team and it could have went either way.”

As great rivalry games often do, the game between Adamsville and McNairy Central came down to the final play. “All in all, the guys played hard and they fought hard. My hat’s off to the whole team,” said Franks, “...I’m just glad we

finished. We finally finished. That’s what I’ve been preaching to the guys: finish.” With MCHS leading 4-2 after John Reed Odom scored on an error to start the seventh inning, things got interesting. Jalen Kendall stepped up to the plate with two outs and two runners on and laced a double into the left field corner next to the Bobcat Baseball field house. Kasey Hurley scored easily on the hit to make the score 4-3 as Bobcat Jonathan Nixon corralled the ball in foul territory and hit his cutoff man with a laser from the wall. Blake Chandler was the recipient. He turned and fired a tremendous relay throw to his catcher, Craig Mullins, while the Cardinals’ tying run, Jacob Wallis, sprinted down the line toward home plate. Mullins turned into a wall in front of the plate as the ball and Wallis arrived simultaneously. After a cloud of dust settled and both teams had virtu-

ally cleared their benches, the umpire called the runner out, ending the game in favor of the Bobcats. “Got beat tonight by a great team that we have had great battles with over the years,” said Cardinal head coach Steven Lambert. “Didn’t take very good care of the baseball tonight with four costly errors and (we) stranded five runners. We have also got to take care of teams early instead of having to rally late.” Adamsville jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after Josh Chappell doubled Kendall home in the first inning, but Bobcat starting pitcher Dakota Roden found his groove after that. Roden (6-2; 1.17 ERA) picked up the win and nailed down his sixth complete-game of the season. He struck out six Cardinals and walked none. The senior has 54 strikeouts in 48 innings while allowing only

The Cardinals and Lady Cardinals made light work of the Scotts Hill Lions at home last Monday afternoon. The boys won all five of their singles matches and split their doubles pairings. In singles, Anthony Trumble defeated Blake Boring (8-5), Cody Trumble defeated Oscar Segura (8-3), Josh Warshaw defeated Houston Rogers (8-2), Cameron Gramse defeated Dylan Harrington (8-4), and Kirby Harville defeated Jeremy Nicholas (8-4). Summitt Reached By Amanda Lowrance Head Sports Writer

After 38 seasons and the most recorded victories in any NCAA sport, Pat Summitt stepped aside last Wednesday and handed the head coaching position of the University of Tennessee Lady Volunteer Basketball Team to her friend and longtime assistant Holly Warlick. Summitt has chosen to continue her role with the team and in her daily life routines, just not as head coach. Her soon-to-be Tennessee graduate son, Tyler was hired as an assistant coach for the Marquette University women’s team the same day Summitt announced her retirement. She is an eight time Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year and led the Lady Vols to 16 SEC Tournament Championships. In the NCAA, Summitt is a seven-time Coach of the Year with eight NCAA Division Championships and was awarded the Naismith Coach of the 20th Century. She’s also been named Tennessean of the Year by the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame an unprecedented two times. The McNairy Central Lady Bobcats had a tough run last week in two games against the Adamsville Lady Cardinals and the Chester County Lady Eagles. The dugout is crowded with injured players and has forced McNairy to make changes and overcome obstacles in one of school year’s busiest months.

Last Friday, the Lady Bobcats hosted the county rival Lady Cardinals and lost 2-0 after two runs earned from Adamsville in the first inning and six scoreless innings of play for MCHS. Hutton pitched another great game throwing 10 strikeouts and only allowing the one hit and one walk from seven innings of play. She also struck out seven of the first nine batters she faced. Bailey Wicker and Olivia Johnson were walked in the top of the first inning. Wicker brought home the first run off a Lady Bobcat error, and Johnson was batted in by a line drive double from cleanup hitter Samantha Oaks to give Adamsville a 2-0 lead to hold onto. The Lady Cardinals were able to hit four additional singles and one double that left several runners on. MCHS senior pitcher Kindra Brown was able to finish the rainy day loss with seven strikeouts and the Lady Bobcat held strong on defense catching 11 infield outs and leaving six AHS runners on base.

With the top seed in District 15-A Tournament on the line, Adamsville had a tough time matching Riverside’s potent offense last Monday in Parsons, Tenn.

Cardinal head coach Steven Lambert said his team had no answer for Riverside’s offense that run-ruled Adamsville in six innings. “Didn’t match up with the Panthers too well offensively,” he said. “They took advantage of walks and timely hits to take us out. We spread out seven hits and wasted several base runners.” By the end of three innings, the Cards trailed 8-0. The Panthers plated two more runs in the fifth and clinched the top seed in the district tournament

with three runs in the sixth. Senior Drew Griswell hit a home run in the second inning, and Josh Chappell went deep in the sixth. Chappell’s home run was his ninth of the season. Jalen Kendall took the loss for AHS. Kasey Hurley pitched four innings in relief. Adamsville (14-13-1, 7-2) hosted Riverside (19-4, 9-0) after deadline last Tuesday. The Cardinals will host their Senior Night against Union City on Thursday at 4:30 p.m where they will celebrate the careers of five AHS senior baseball players. Bobcats bitten by Lions By Andrew Alexander Sports Writer

One costly inning was the demise of McNairy Central when the Bobcats hosted Trinity Christian Academy last Monday night.

The Lions scored four 2-out runs in the third inning, and it proved to be the difference in the game, giving the Bobcats their second loss at home this season. Senior Blake Chandler did what he could by hitting his spots consistently as he went all seven innings on the mound for McNairy Central while striking out eight and walking only one. TCA got on the board with a single blooped into shallow left field that pushed a run across the plate. The Lions scored two more on a double to make the score 3-0. One pitch later, they scored another on a single up the middle. After momentarily falling apart,

the Bobcats regrouped, put the wheels back on, and tried to win the ballgame. McNairy Central loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth, and TCA’s starter balked in the Bobcats’ first run. A few pitches later, Craig Mullins scored on a passed ball, and MCHS was down only 4-2. Chandler stepped to the plate in the bottom of the fifth and doubled home Kirby Tacker to cut the Lions’ lead to one, but the Bobcat bats went cold in the last two innings. McNairy Central (19-9-1, 8-3-1) traveled to Somerville, Tenn. last Tuesday after deadline in an attempt to clinch the District 14-AA South Division crown with a win over the Wildcats of Fayette-Ware. Both teams did a great job,” said Franks. “Had a great pitching performance by Montell (Johnson) and a great pitching performance by Dakota Roden.” Montell Johnson took the loss for Adamsville after throwing five complete innings for the Cards, and Lambert was not displeased with his team’s effort. “I am always proud of how we never give up and continue to fight hard to the end, but sometimes that puts the game into other peoples’ hands and not ours,” Lambert said. “We can only control what we do and not the other team and/or the umpires. Great high school baseball game between two great high school teams that are going to make a lot of noise in this year’s postseason.” MCHS seniors Blake Chandler and Austin Gafford hope to lead a Bobcat charge into their district tournament, and definitely had things working to their advantage against Adamsville. The Adamsville Lady Cardinals opposed several four-legged felines last week including the Scotts Hill Lady Lions, the McNairy Central Lady Bobcats, and the Trinity Christian Academy Lady Lions and were able to pick up a couple of close wins.

Taylor Hutton pitched a nohitter versus Scotts Hill striking out seven batters in seven innings. A line drive AHS error allowed a Scotts Hill runner on first base in the bottom of the fourth inning but the runner was left on. The game went completely scoreless until the top of the sixth

inning when Parker Davis’ line drive single batted in senior Kristina Milford for the game winning run. Adamsville was making good hits but was unable to bring runner in and left 13 on base in the end. Before the 2012 tennis season began, Cardinal head coach Michael Harvill said Adamsville’s biggest test in the district would be Madison Academic Magnet High School. On April 17, the boys struggled with the Mustangs, but the girls passed the test. The Lady Cardinals beat the Lady Mustangs in four of their seven matches. Darby Congiardo defeated MAM’s No. 1, Chandler Reed (8-5), and Ali Gean defeated Anne Elisabeth Gerrard (8-5) in singles. Maddie Wilson fell in a tough match to Cara Ward (9-7). Likewise, Kasandra Krenson was defeated by Annie Wright (9-7), and Allison Smarsh was defeated by Jordan Rowland (8-2). In doubles action, the Lady Cardinal pairs were victorious in both matches. Congiardo and Krenson defeated Reed and Ward (8-6), and Wilson and Gean defeated Wright and Gerrard (8-5). The boys were not so fortunate. LEBANON, Tenn. – Nine Cumberland golfers were named TranSouth ScholarAthletes this week in advance of the conference championships set for Monday and Tuesday at Canebrake Golf Club in Athens, Ala. To be eligible, student-athletes must be a sophomore, junior or senior academically and maintain a 3.00 grade-point-average on a 4.0 scale. Five women’s players were among the 14 honorees from

the four teams who participate in the sport in the TranSouth. Juniors Allyson Agee, K.C. McGinley and Sarah Beth Foote and sophomore Kayla Smith and Lindsey Taylor all garnered the accolade from the conference. On the men’s side, four golfers were among the 20 honorees from the seven teams in the league. Seniors Paul Vaughan and Dustin Thomas, sophomore Austin Garrett and Austin Whitmer,

who completed his eligibility last season, each earned the Scholar-Athlete honor. The men will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday while the women’s tournament will consist of 18 holes each day at Canebrake in Athens this coming week. Thomas is the defending champion on the men’s side, while Agee tied for second last year and placed fourth as a freshman in the conference tournament.

being awarded to Summitt. As a starving high school basketball player, Summitt and her family had to move in order to play because often girls’ basketball teams did not exist. In college, she attended UT Martin where she played for the first women’s basketball coach but still had to pay tuition due to the absence of Title IX, omitting athletic scholarships for women. At 22 years old, Summitt became head coach of the unsanctioned, future National Collegiate Athletic Association Lady Vols team. Four of her players were only a year younger than she was during her first year as head coach. Starting at the bottom, holding her head high and working her way up, Summitt washed players’ uniforms, drove the bus, and raised money for team expenses. It wasn’t until the 1981-82 season that Tennessee played in the first NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship Tournament, and even then the Lady Vols advanced to the National Semifinals. The SEC has more than considered naming the championship trophy after the unparalleled coach, but the NCAA has strict rules and will most likely lose the chance if not acted on soon. But who could ever match what she has done for women’s basketball? Who will be able to walk in her shoes and experience those historical obstacles? The courageous, knowledgeable coach led UT to nearly 1,100 wins, eight national championships, and has inspired generations of women. The worst of her symptoms in early onset dementia include disorientation while waking up on the road in strange, dark hotel rooms, strain in drawing diagram plays, retention of numbers, and her quick response and ferocity has deteriorated. Just as many others have taken the news, Summitt has been affected more by the diagnosis than the effects of Alzheimer’s disease. People have treated her differently since the diagnosis by acting as if she is sick, no longer valuable, or by talking around her instead of to her. She has created a whole new era of women’s basketball and still wants to continue to be a part of what she has created until it is no longer possible. That is true dedication and without this spark, where would women’s basketball be today?

Another tough battle earlier in the week had the Lady Bobcats facing the No. 1 team in District 14-AA on their home field. The tremendous disadvantage gave the Chester County Lady Eagles a 10-0 win with winning pitcher, Sammy Jo Guy pitching a no-hitter against McNairy Central. “It was obvious from the first hit of the game that we did not come to play ball,” said Lady Bobcat Coach Mellanie Surratt. After the upsetting loss, McNairy Central (10-11-1) held a 5-4 district record with three more regular season district competitions remaining until the tournament begins on May 3 at Jackson South Side. Injuries and upsets have caused the Lady Bobcats to struggle this season, but upcoming games versus the Jackson South Side Lady Hawks and Liberty Tech Lady Crusaders have McNairy Central ready to finish out the regular season on top. Congratulations to Lady Bobcat Tierra Lusk, who signed a letter of intent to play volleyball for the Lady Bearcats of Rust College. Lusk became the second student athlete at McNairy Central High School to move on to play volleyball at the collegiate level. Rust is a liberal arts school in Holly Springs, Miss. that offers 42 majors and is on the list of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). Adamsville girls top Hardin County, boys struggle By Andrew Alexander Sports Writer

The Lady Cardinal Tennis team was victorious over Hardin County last Thursday, but the boys lost 6-0. Playing short-handed with Hayley Edmondson out with an illness, the girls managed five wins in seven matches. In singles, Darby Congiardo defeated Addy Adkisson (8-2), Ali Gean defeated Bobby Jo Delaney (8-4), and Allison Smarsh won by forfeit. Maddie Wilson was defeated by Morgan Mathis (8-4), and Kasandra Krenson was defeated by Rachel Smith (8-6). In girls’ doubles, Congiardo and Krenson defeated Adkisson and Mathis (8-6), and Wilson and Gean defeated Smith and Delaney (84). The boys had a rough go of things against a talented Hardin County boys’ team. In singles, Tiger Dylan Bhakta defeated Anthony Trumble (8-5), Elliot Burgess defeated Cody Trumble (8-2), Josh White defeated Cameron Gramse (8-6), and Jacob Haynes defeated Kirby Harville (8-3). In doubles, the Trumble brothers fell to Bhakta and Burgess (84), and Gramse and Harville lost to White and Blake Cossey (8-1).

The Adamsville Soccer Team nabbed its first win of the season at home last Thursday against Jackson South Side.

Entering the match 0-2-1, the Cardinals were desperate to etch a mark in the win column. After Dustin Plunk netted a goal just six minutes into the match against the Hawks, Adamsville was on its way to doing just that. Around the 40 minute mark, the Cards were down 2-1, but Plunk drilled an equalizer. Regulation ended with the teams knotted 2-2, but the Cardinals pulled it out with penalty

Last Friday, the Cards traveled to Jackson, Tenn. and lost, 4-1, to the Knights of Sacred Heart. Majors recorded eight saves for AHS, and Shoate scored his first goal of the season and was assisted by fellow senior Dustin Sowell. Last Monday, Adamsville fell, 4-1, to the Wildcats of Wayne County. Shoate had three saves as the keeper, but also scored a goal in the contest. The Cardinals are now 1-41. They will take on Liberty on Thursday in Jackson.
