EXPO MEET McNAIRY is a dream team's success By Janet Rail Publisher

Moondog Makers & Bakers of Corinth, Mississippi set up an oven to serve fire baked pizzas, one of the many attractions during the expo See more on page 9.

EXPO at the Hangar and Job Fair “Meet McNairy” was a spectacular achievement Saturday at the Robert Sibley Airport – Aviation & Transportation Museum. It was estimated that over 1,000 attended, however the numbers do not tell the full story. An Expo is a people's success and the small team of dreamers wanting to expose everything good about McNairy County to others was not only commend-

able but proves how a powerful few can make a difference. The success is the direct result of one person, Wes Landreth, of Jones Exhaust, having a great idea and sharing it with Robin Lees founder of Downtown Events Alliance of Adamsville. Never tell Robin about a great idea if you think she is not going to make it happen. Robin quickly assembled a committee of four adding Sybil Dancer, Selmer Parks & Recreation and Sherry Holsing, Packaging Corporation of Ameri-

can and of course, Chris Tull, manager of Robert Sibley Airport. After ten months of planning, the Expo delivered to the hearts and minds of many around the county and beyond who had never even seen or visited our local airport. A special treat was Byron Conaway, showcasing his private collection of antique war planes, vehicles and archives in Hangar One. Moving beyond any barriers of Covid, the Expo is a testament See EXPO, 9

The county mayor is expected to provide leadership and direction to the county in most policy areas. The mayor is the “fiscal agent” and “chief accounting officer” solely responsible for creating a budget annually. It is one of relationship building and for McNairy County, working closely with mayors of ten incorporated towns within the county, closely with the superintendent of schools and the department of education to set priorities for our future. Elementary student's smile...........................................................................From page 1 According to his mother, Alyssa Reynolds, “Greyson is the type of kid that has never met a stranger. He loves everyone he meets. With his ADHD school has been a little hard for him but that doesn’t stop him from accomplishing anything.” His mom says, he may be small but that doesn’t stop him from playing any sport he puts his heart into. He favorite things are cars and dinosaurs. Everyday he makes more improvements and is not giving up. His smile brings so much hope for this long road of recovery. “On Wednesday the surgeons stated by the grace of God they were able to save his right arm. That night we found out he has a left clavicle fracture, right arm fracture, and a right lung puncture. After his second surgery on Friday, we learned the burns on his left arm and on the left side of his head/ear were considered 3rd degree burns. Unfortunately that surgery was not successful in closing the open wound on his right arm due to swelling. So they wanted to give his body a rest over the weekend to heal and pray the swelling goes down for the third surgery.” With Greyson's pain under control he has been able to roll around the hospital and see the goldfish downstairs. “Each day he gets better and better with help from the therapy team. Tuesday he will have his third surgery to clean and attempt to close the wound on his right arm. If we are not successful he will have a fourth surgery to place a skin flap or a skin graft to cover the exposed nerves and muscles in the right arm,” said Alyssa. According to the official report, Chief Nathan Reagan, did hear a call for service go across the Adamsville PD radio at 7:18 a.m. on Wed., April 6, 2022, reporting a car vs pedestrian at the north end of the Adamsville Elementary School campus. Regan arrived on the scene at 7:19 a.m. along with Officer Ricky Howell. “I did immediately observe the scene of the accident on Hughes Street and was motioned by members of the AES staff to respond to the

area of the accident.” Upon Regan's arrival, he witnessed multiple individuals already rendering aid to the six-year old that had been struck by the vehicle. Reagan did recognize one of the individuals, Forrest Webb, a member of the Adamsville Fire Department with medical training. Reagan was checking on the child's condition and observed a female subject holding a shirt on the child's right arm near his bicep area that had been wrapped tightly around his arm and the female was holding it in place securely. On Reagan's observation he noted a long sleeve shirt wrapped very tightly around the child's upper right arm near his shoulder. He then verified that the child's mother and the individual driving the vehicle that had struck the child was still on the scene. Reagan then retrieved a tourniquet from his vehicle. Adamsville First Responder Dylan Bradley arrived on the scene. They then applied the tourniquet on the child's upper right arm at 7:22 a.m. as recorded by Bradley as they awaited emergency medical services to arrive. Officer Howell made contact with all parties involved and recorded their information and took preliminary statements. EMS arrived on the scene to transfer the child to Hardin Medical Center. Chief Reagan accompanied the child to the hospital as the mother arrived at the hospital. After treatment, the child was transferred by another EMS to Vanderbilt Medical Center where he remains today. Following the accident,

Chief Reagan did observe security camera footage of the incident. After reviewing the footage at the school bus drop off on Hughes St., he did observe the child exit the car and began to run from the car across Hughes St. towards the gymnasium. According to the report Reagan did observe the child see the car coming toward him on Hughes St. At one point in the film, the chief did observe the child appear to run faster and move a little to his left while running in order to “beat” the car as he crossed Hughes St. At that time, the Lincoln Navigator did strike the child with the right fender near the front right tire did strike the child. The vehicle was observed to inch forward before coming to a complete stop as the child disappeared under the front end of the vehicle. Immediately the child crawled out from under the vehicle and appeared to be favoring his right arm. The driver of the Navigator, Lori Quick, attempted to check on the child as multiple adults came to render aid in the moments before the police arrived on the scene. There are no pending charges in relation to the accident, according to Reagan. “A lot of people think the police are the heroes and applied a tourniquet for the child but the real heroes was the first responder that was there and was able to provide attention to the kid and the school system who did a great job with mitigating traffic and redirecting traffic to get all the children in the school after the accident. The school had to completely shut down one drop off area and direct all traffic into one drop off area, when they normally have three. They all did a great job and in my opinion, they are the heroes in this situation,” said Reagan. For now, Greyson, according to his mother Alyssa and father Michael, he is getting great care at Vanderbilt and improving daily. “There is still so many things that are up in the air on his recovery. But we are so thankful for all the love and prayers from our community for our sweet boy,” said Alyssa.

School Board Chairman and Caterpillar employee Ricky Whitaker explore disassembly and reassembly of a motor.

Caterpillar's continued commitment to education.......................................From page 1 Jeremy Sweat, Mechanical Engineer Tech at Caterpillar had the idea and said, “Kids don't get to get out and get dirty. We are teaching kids about wrenching and metrics. Showing kids about how things are put together. We have ten hours of volunteer time and I wanted to do my hours at Selmer Elementary where his wife is a teacher.” Other Caterpiller employees in attendance are Gary Dickey, School Board Chairman Ricky Whitaker and plant manager, Jeff Belcher. “It is important to get this into the community and help solve problems and give the kids an opportunity for exposure. This is now in four or five schools in the area,”said Belcher. Caterpillar employees will spend ten volunteer hours working with students teaching skills to serve a lifetime. Teacher Julie Sweat's class was enjoying the experience last Monday. At McNairy Central High School, a donation of a motor was given to the Ag Department for use in the classroom to make the students more familiar with the motor and help prepare them for future employment. Whitaker was talking with MCHS students and sharing that they would be surprised at

tearing this engine apart and just seeing how each part of it works and you get to where you can put them back together and how well that will serve you because we have jobs. Our jobs are not disassembling but assembling or machining. “If you get a leg up here, you can get a job at Caterpillar,” said Whitaker. At Adamsville High School, Caterpillar donated another motor for use in the agricultural and technical classrooms to expose even more students to engine disassembly, inspection and reassembly. As students partner with Caterpillar, they gain nearly 100 years of experience and expertise. To date there are four students from McNairy County high schools working as student interns at Caterpillar in Corinth. Over the years, the company has hired a large percentage of their workforce from the county and continues that today. With this educational partnership, it will build a bridge to welcome students to the company for years to come. Caterpillar began manufacturing in Corinth, Mississippi more than three decades ago with a few employees in one building. Now, with a workforce of more than

Adamsville High School students explore the motor.

1,200, the Mississippi manufacturing team has grown in size and scope. The Mississippi Reman facilities have been operating successfully for over 32 years with exceptional results from a talented workforce. Current operations expanded to include the remanufacture of C175 engines in their large engine facility with consists of C175 assembly, test and paint operations. In addition to the large engine facility, The Mississippi Reman campus includes the Cardinal Drive facility, where the team remanufactures engines, cylinder heads, cranks and blocks; the Sawyer Road facility, which provides core inspection and dealer support services; and the Prentiss location, where internal components remanufacturing resides. Nearby, the Corinth Logistics Facility houses parts storage. Belcher stated that outside of Corinth and Booneville, McNairy County is the third largest population area for employees at Caterpillar. At the end of the day, partnerships like the one with Caterpillar will lead to an era of career-focused education preparing our youth for success in years to come.

Old Stone Fort has a history of ghosts, pranks By Bill Carey TN History for Kids I don’t believe in ghosts, never have. But there was a time when Old Stone Fort, in Coffee County, was said to be haunted. At first glance, Old Stone Fort appears to be nothing more than a short wall around a big field that is flanked by small two rivers – the Duck and Little Duck. But the wall happens to be very old, between 1,500 and 2,000 years old, during the Woodland Era. This is the same era in which Pinson Mounds was built in present-day Madison County, and it’s a mysterious era. When settlers began moving into Tennessee in the 1700s, the Native American tribes they encountered told them that they didn’t know what the place had been used for. The newcomers gave the place the name “Old Stone Fort” because they guessed it had been a fortification built by early European explorers – perhaps those who were led by Hernando de Soto, for instance. But in 1966, archaeologists from the Universi-

ty of Tennessee conducted extensive digs which proved that the walls were built in the Woodland Era. Drawing conclusions on what they found (charcoal samples) and what they didn’t find (cultural artifacts and human remains), the archaeological team led by Charles Faulkner concluded that the place once had a religious or ceremonial function. It was, perhaps, a place where tribes gathered once a year for rituals, or sporting events, or just to socialize. If you think about Old

Stone Fort and its geography, it’s easy to see how it could become a popular gathering place. The area between the rivers is flat but surrounded on most sides by steep embankments. Next to Old Stone Fort, the Duck River flows along solid rock and goes through a series of waterfalls, the largest of which is known as Big Falls. The natural flow of the river here has attracted more than one business venture; in the latter part of the twentieth century a paper mill operated at Old Stone Fort. Here’s what I once

discovered about Old Stone Fort’s history from old newspaper clippings: In 1833, six Rutherford County men went to Old Stone Fort for a fox hunt. After having camped out for several days, one of them got spooked by something he saw and heard, which caused him to leave. A year later, the same six men, with nine of their friends, came back and stayed at the same place. At first they saw nothing unusual. But after several days, a local man named Latimer, who wanted to drive the

hunters away, built a contraption that made a frightening sound. With the help of two boys, Latimer sneaked around the woods in the middle of the night and unleashed the terrifying noise at different points and at different times. “At first the hunters were disposed to laugh, then they got quiet, then they commenced shooting,” the article said. “Next morning the hunters told wonderful stories about what they saw, how it came close up to the fire, how impervious it was to their bullets, how it

changed from an animal to a woman, and what it would say.” According to the article, among the members of the hunting party were Leonard Sims, who later moved to Missouri and became a U.S. Congressman, and Jack Fletcher, who served for many years in the Tennessee General Assembly. Both Sims and Fletcher were apt to retell the ghost story in legislative settings. One of the boys involved in the mischief, however, went on to become a reporter for the Nashville American, and he confessed to his part in the prank in the [Nashville] Daily American on May 18, 1887. I contemplated this ghost story and practical joke last year when, on a drive from Chattanooga back to my home in Nashville, my son and I stopped at Old Stone Fort, which is now a state archaeological park. We took off our shoes, walked through the river and explored the falls. Its easy to understand that the place would be a welcome haven for adults, children and spirits of all eras.

Adamsville Elementary living biography day celebrated

R

ecently, AES had their annual Living Biography Day. Students were allowed to choose a historical figure to research and pres-

ent to their peers during the school day as well as to their families during a special evening event. Their work also included an

essay, a digital presentation, and an informative poster. Selections ranged from Lewis and Clark, The Wright Brothers, Generals Robert E. Lee and Ul-

ysses S. Grant to Helen Keller and Rosa Parks. Students put many hours of work into their projects and learned many interesting facts and stories

about their respective person. This is a tradition for all AES fifth graders, and they begin looking forward to it several years in advance.

McNairy County Board of Education Employees are “Walking Across Tennessee” By Schancey Chapman Family and Consumer Science Agent UT Extension – McNairy County

T

he University of Tennessee Extension in McNairy County partnered with McNairy County Coordinated School Health (CSH) to offer a program called Walk Across Tennessee to all board of education employees. This program had 6 schools in McNairy County on their feet and moving toward a healthier life. Family and Consumer Science Agent, Schancey Chapman, implemented the 8-week team-based exercise program with the help of CSH Director, Shelva Moore. The teams are encouraged to cumulatively exercise the equivalent of the length of Tennessee (about 500 miles) or more. Team members do not have to exercise together. The team who walks the farthest “across Tennessee” will win great prizes, but everyone who participates will take home a healthy habit. The biggest prize included a cooler bag filled with kitchen gadgets, a pedometer, and a restaurant gift card.

This prize went to the team who had the most miles logged after the 8 weeks. Each participant was also put in a drawing if they turned in their weekly logs by Monday at 5:00 p.m. The participant who won this prize

received an air fryer. This friendly competition brought in 19 teams and 110 participants. UT Extension wants to congratulates the Rambling Rebels Team at Bethel Springs Elementary School with 2,232.60

miles. The 6 member team includes: Katie Brown, Tammy Hutcherson, Lacey Tanner, Mallory Graham, Terri Massengill, and Brandy Stone. Wendy Bowers at Adamsville Elementary won the drawing for the air fryer. Adamsville Elementary School logged the most miles of all the schools and won the $500 for their staff wellness. Adamsville Elementary School exercised approximately 8,961.83 miles. The schools did a great job at participating

Selmer Elementary STREAM class grow herbs Recently at Selmer Elementary School thru Mrs. Julie Sweat’s STREAM classes - students grew various herbs using hydroponics. They used aerogardens to plant the seeds in, they watered them, watched them grow,

then harvested the herbs. They then used the herbs to make a dip and a pesto to serve their class at a very special tea party. Students were invited to dress up and even bring a favorite stuffed animal/

doll to attend too. Through this experience, students were able to gain the understanding of how to grow food from seeds, and how to be able to actually eat what they were responsible for growing.

and being physically active. The 110 participants exercised approximately 27,114 miles, that’s almost 55 trips across Tennessee. They definitely “walked” across Tennessee! UT Extension hopes this program has instilled a healthy habit for life. UT Extension would like to thank all the schools, teachers, administration, and staff that participated, as well as CSH for helping throughout the whole process. Pictured are the winners of the prizes.

McNairy County Extension offers programs in agriculture and natural resources, 4-H youth development, family and consumer sciences, and resource development. The University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and McNairy County governments are cooperating to bring the people of the county various programs and services. UT Extension provides equal opportunities in all programs and employment.

SUNRISE – Be Not Discouraged By David Coy Contributor

Did you know that Walt Disney was fired from his first job when he was told he lacked imagination, and had no good ideas. Thomas Edison was told as a youth that he was too stupid to learn anything. Elvis Presley after one of his first performances on the Grand Ole Opry was told he was not going to amount to anything, that he needed to go back to driving a truck. During times of discouragement or difficulty they did not give up nor allowed their focus to be distracted. They stayed the course. We all face times in our lives

when we feel beat down. When we feel life has us backed into a corner. Perhaps in your journey with grief you are feeling that way now or you have in the past. If you did feel that way, what or who helped you through the dark, difficult time in your journey? I am certain the above individuals we mentioned as examples had their support system and or tools they used for just such an occasion as when doubt and discouragement knocking on the door of their heart. Know yourself. If you have confidence in your abilities, skill set in a specific area that is parallel with your life goals then discouragement will

not defeat you. Remain focused on your goal. It is easy to become distracted and take side road from our goal if we are not careful. Even people in entertainment know the value of encouragement from others. Build a support system of family & friends. Last but not least, count your blessings. Humility is a great character quality. It is dangerous to think more highly of ourselves than we ought, Romans 12:3 or compare ourselves with others, 2 Corinthians 10:12. ~David. As always if we may be of service, we look forward to seeing you in grief support group this month.
