Green shares updates from D.C. By Janet Rail Publisher
U
nited States Representative Mark Green recently met with county residents in Selmer to share an update on the happenings in Washington D.C.
Green relayed that the federal government sees what is happening in Ukraine up close. “When the women and children are streaming out of that country to the tune of 4 million plus and asking us let us go, let us put an end to this. Of course, we explain to them, we do not want WWIII and Putin has a button and that button launches six thousand nuclear warheads,” said Green. “When you explain it like that the people understand and they see what is happening in Ukraine up close.”
“The troops are trained, ready and well equipped and doing a fantastic mission,” said Green. “Our troops are on mission of deterrents as well as a mission or arming the Ukrainians and are now training the Ukrainians again,” said Green. “When the Joint Chiefs of Staff, whom I have known for years talk about cutting special operations forces, I just show them a video of a Ukranian shooting down a Russian jet and say, ok don't think about cutting the soft budget cause See REPRESENTATIVE GREEN, 4

Twelve-year old honors her mom while helping others By Dayna Patterson Contributor
A
t twelve years old Taylor Bauman has the heart of a servant.
Taylor recently raised money on two different occasions to provide snacks for patients of the Kirkland Cancer Center in Jackson, Tennessee. Taylor’s Mom Kassie is a cancer survivor and Taylor wanted to do something to honor her mom and help others at the same time. Recently, the Bauman family discovered that the wonderful snacks Kassie and many many other cancer patients get each visit are donated by different individuals in the community. Taylor then
told her Nana, Wendy Bowers, that she knew exactly what she wanted to do to help out and honor her mom. Taylor and her Nana decided a bake sale would be a fun way to raise some funds to buy snacks for the Cancer Center. Taylor loves to bake, so with the help of her two grandmothers, she prepared items to sale for her first bake sale. The first event profited around $200 and she was able to go to Walmart and buy a good bit of snacks for the center. The first delivery of snacks was made by Taylor’s mom since she was in school the day of delivery. Since the first bake sale was successful, See TWELVE-YEAR, 4

Planting delays coming to an end with weather forecast By Jai Templeton Contributor
A
fter a warm and dry start the 2022 spring planting season turned cool and damp. However, the upcoming two weeks forecast looks promising for producers attempting to play catch up on field work.
The damp weather pat-
terns over the past few weeks have resulted in a much less than average planting rate for crops grown in the area. As of May 1, TN corn plantings were rated at 42% which compares with 63% in 2021. Emerged corn plants were 10% compared to 2021's 33%. Soybeans were behind at 9% planted. End of April 2021 soybean plantings stood
at 14%. Cotton is more on par with previous years with 3% planted. The coming week's hot temperatures will provide excellent planting and germination opportunities for a strong start to the cotton crop. Overall, TN crop ratings are pretty good. USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service rate a majority of the state's strawberry, winter wheat and
apple crops in the good to excellent category. Pastures are still showing good stands of cool weather grasses and are rated at 60% good to excellent. The fairly mild winter brought the state's cattle inventory into the spring months with over 2/3's rated good to excellent. While the wet weather has not been as challenging to
McNairy County producers as previous years it has presented some concerns. However, as severe drought continues to hold a lock over most of the western United States the wet weather pattern has kept most of the Mid-South region from having even abnormally dry conditions. Hopefully, those excessive conditions will not spread further east.

Union Grove Methodist Church celebrates108 years this homecoming N estled just off the corner of Highway 142 and Pleasant Site Road sits a quaint country church. A rich history of serving God, and people, lives within the walls and continues today through the members of Union Grove Methodist Church. Pat Jones, Church Historian, shared the few records she had that were kept by longtime member Wilma Henson. The following is a brief history as recorded by Mrs. Henson.
Union Grove is in its 108th year of serving God, serving others, and above all, loving people. Union Grove was formed in 1914 from the Prospect Union Church. Mr. Elmer E. Marshall gave the grounds for the church. Prospect stayed active until 1938. Bro. Albert Plunk was pastor at this time, but due to various circumstances that church felt it was time for a pastoral change. At this time, Mt. Vinson was on the Union Grove charge and Bro. R.R. Smith for Bethel Springs was appointed pastor for one year. On February 16, 1939, Rev. Walter Hill and some members met to determine membership. They concluded there were 20 members of Union Grove at that time. In the summer of 1940, a great revival was held, and
the church saw a growth with 32 people added to the membership, 30 of those were professions of faith. Throughout the year, 72 more were added to the membership with 52 of those professions of faith. At this time, Union Grove was part of a five-point charge with Mt. Vinson. The church saw repairs in 1940 and two new Sunday School rooms added in 1951. In 1954 a new church building was started, with a floor space of 1668 square feet. It consisted of a sanctuary and four Sunday School rooms. Bro. Jack Lucas was pastor at this time. The new building was completed in 1955 which also saw the purchase of a new piano and heating system. In 1961, Mr. Levi Michael donated a strip of land on the north side of the church for use as a parking lot. In 1963, another addition was made to the church when the Methodist Youth Fellowship sponsored the building of the fellowship hall. In 1966 the MYF purchased new pews, a new pulpit, and communion table. The baptismal stand and bowel were donated in memory Talmadge Holmes by James and Wilma Henson. In the early 1970’s, mem-
bers purchased four acres of land next to the church to be used a community cemetery, which is there today. In 1982 new central heating and air replaced the window units and gas heaters that had been stolen. At this time, Union Grove was a threepoint charge with Lebanon and New Hope. In 1994 it became a two-point charge with just Lebanon. November of 1999 saw another addition as Union Grove had continued to prosper. Because the fellowship hall had been outgrown, an extension was added. The addition to the fellowship hall was completed in February of 2000. New chairs were purchased, and this addition continues to provide the needed space today for the many activities of Union Grove. History records are sparse at this point, but Union Grove continues strong. In August of 2020, for the first time anyone in the church can remember, Union Grove became a one church charge with the appointment of Billy Patterson as pastor. In December of 2021, Union Grove returned to a two-point charge with Sulphur Springs. Union Grove is still an active church. Although membership has declined in recent years, the faith and energy of the church still holds strong. The church has

a desire to grow and prosper and continue its mission of serving God and people. Although the church is small in membership and active attendance ranges from 15-20 per week, the activities and energy of the church is by no means small. Union Grove is a group of active folks, always looking for ways to help others and share the love of Christ. Mission is the heart of the church and it’s what drives the congregations. Conversations often center around who they can lend a helping hand to or what can they do for the community. At one point a highlight of the church was the Christmas Toy Store held in conjunction with sister churches in that area of the county. Today, the church faithfully participates in the Christmas shoebox ministry. Each year during the Christmas season, funds from the annual yard sale are used to assist families in need. Food giveaways have also taken place by the members. Along with mission and outreach activities, Union Grove is an active with many activities throughout the year, which anyone is welcome to come and join! One of the best loved activities is the 60+ year tradition of Christmas caroling. The church also has occasional lunch outings and day trips, hosts annual summer singings in June and July, has an annual revival, a yearly trunk or treat for the community, and yearly yard sales in November. These are just a few of things that happen at Union Grove. Weekly activities include Sunday School at 10:20, worship at 11:20, Saturday bible study at 7:30. They also host a oncea-month breakfast and devotional at Circle T
café in Selmer. The church is always looking for activities to add to involve and bring others in. If you are looking for a place to go on Sunday mornings, and happen to drop in at Union Grove, you will be captured by the love you find in this place. That is something rare to find in today’s time- genuine, caring, loving people- but when you walk in the doors of Union Grove you know you have found those qualities and you instantly feel at home. This coming Sunday is Homecoming Sunday at Union Grove. A day when, not only those who have ties to the church are welcomed home, but anyone is welcomed! When you visit with us you will find love and acceptance like you’ve never experienced. We invite you to come as you are! The atmosphere is casual and laid back, but you will find the church motto of “Where Christ is worshipped, and people are loved” rings true. Worshipping God in Spirit and truth are at the core of Union Grove. Your spirit is sure to be awaken when you hear Mrs. Doris Ashe play the piano and then the voices of the congregation join in song. So, if you’re looking for a place to call home, that truly feels like home, then come join us at Union Grove. We would love to see you and have you be part of all that God is doing, and is going to do, through our little church.

that is the guys that train Ukranians,” said Green. Green stated, obviously there are other issues across the globe, with China and Taiwan a big concern. “The supply chain issues that have impacted our economy. You look at chips that are in cars with Taiwan manufacturing 67% of the worlds computer chips and 94% of all high end chips. There is a fix in place, but will be a year or two before that fix is realized,” said Green. A plant in Arizona broke ground last November as well as a plant in Austin, Texas and one in Ohio are in the making, according to Green for major chip manufacturers which could wean off our dependence on Taiwan for chips. “If China were to get ahold of all of that it would be devastating to the world economy whether it be a John Deere tractor, Ford F-350 or a toaster over, today they all have chips in them,” he said. The Covid issues in China have also shut down manufacturing there. “We have a Bill that I intruduced a week ago, to move manufacturing back to the U.S. and back from Latin America,” said Green. There are two different bills that do two different things to get manufacturing back and to decrease our dependence on China, Green continued. “We have a lot of Democrat support for that bill and Democrat co-sponsors. The Bill on Latin America does a couple of different things. It creates opportunity in Latin America and may decrease the pressure on our southern border.” “The current administration wants an open portal, If they do away with Title 42, there will be an issue. We are on target to have approximately to have approximately 2.5 to 3 million people crossing the border tp the U.S. just this year. At some point our Social Services can't support that. It is already strained as it is and American's pay the price,” said Green. Green said there are cases in the Supreme Court regarding the laws on immigration but you can tell from recent news the court has a lot on its plate.
Bauman wanted to do another one. She held her second bake sale for the Kirkland Cancer Center on Saturday, May 7, on the sidewalk of Court Avenue, downtown Selmer. Taylor profited well over $450 and was able to fill her moms entire car of snacks and goodies for the Cancer Center Monday morning. Taylor also got to join in delivering the snacks with her mom. The staff at Kirkland were so grateful and called her their Angel. They had gotten down to only peanuts in the snack stash. Taylor plans to have more events soon, to continue to provide snacks for the cancer patients. If you would like to be a helping hand to Taylor’s ministry, you may drop off monetary donations to Darren Bowers at his Modern Woodmen office located
There was discussion about how inflation is on everybody's minds. Gas prices are high and Green stated the President was waging war on the energy sector. “You can believe, if you want to, that they have opened the leases, and they have, but they haven't opened the environmental permits that allow one to drill.” “A lease means nothing if you can't sink a well or are allowed to do seismic testing. No oil company is going to spend money to build a well if they haven't been able to test to determine if oil is under the ground,” said Green. Green stated that the United States produces oil and natural gas 47% cleaner than other countries. “So if you are for the planet, why wouldn't you be for making it here? Our president doesn't see it that way so the price of gas continues to increase and the trickle down effect is to the farmer that pays a certain amount for diesel to plow a certain acre and it cost a ton more. Adding to that, the cost of fertilizer, in some cases is 2.5 times what it was last year somewhat due to sanctions in Russia. The USAID director, the branch that give foreign aid to other counties, and they are saying this is a great opportunity to force farmers into a green economy.” Green stated he does not see a lot of electric tractors out there plowing fields. Green shared his recent dinner with Newt Gingrich, and he is very concerned about the possibility of famine in third world countries because Ukraine produces 13 percent of the world's wheat and 135 of the worlds corn and unable to plant their fields. “Layer into that the costs of diesel and the cost of fertilizer. “The food supply will be tight but don't go run on the local grocery stores. We are looking at some very challenging times,” said Green. Green spoke about the labor supply and how many in the audience were small businesses. Most of the government incentives paying people not to work have ended,

however there are still some that are expiring very soon so hopefully that will help address the issue but as the economy reaches this precipice of negative growth. “If the economy gets in a place called stagflation, then as the economy stops growing, that will free up workers. The question is, will that balance itself out, and the answer is, we just don't know.” Green shared his concern that we are in some very unique economic situations right now and as a guy who studied economics in under graduate, I have just about enough knowledge to be an orange belt, which is just enough to get your butt kicked.” “The minority party in the house pushes the administration to make good decisions. Reigning in the money supply. The interest rates are going to go up. The bad thing about that it that we are so broke as a country, with 30 trillion dollars in debt, we can't afford to raise the interest rates enough to actually slow the inflation. What do I mean by that? Right now our debt, just to pay the interest on our loans, is about 400 billion dollars a year. With every single increase, every 1.0 increase in the interest rate, we owe another 300 billion dollars on our loans. So if, the interest rate goes up 2 percentage points, which is the most we think we can afford, that is another 600 billion dollars that we have to come up with in a year just to cover the interest on our loans,” said Green. Continuing, Green said taking the interest on our loans 1 trillion dollars or half the U.S. budget. The total economy is about 22-25 trillion, somewhere in there. That is an enormous figure. When you layer into that the need to update our military, which is not fighting with systems that are 20 to 30 years old, competing with China, we don't have to worry so much about Russia, as the Ukrainians are taking care of them. China and there advancing military puts us in a difficult spot. “I don't mean to come in here and be a “Debbie

Downer” but we are facing some very challenging times as a nation.” Green shared, look at what has happened within the past year, we had a great economy and we shut it down way more than we needed to. I think Tennessee did it right, shut down for about three weeks and then opened everything up. Pretty much everything was open within a month.” “Tennessee's economy was one of seven states that actually grew last year. Fortunately, Texas powered the country, and overall the country did not have a negative GDP growth. Other than in those quarters when the economy shut down. So, we are in a tough place. That doesn't mean we can fix it and turn it around but the way to turn it around it to decrease federal spending. We have to do that. And if we don't, there will be bankruptcy coming,” said Green. “We have to get control of our southern border, we cannot afford, not only the economic cost, but the crime. We have to be strong overseas so that we are not having to spend treasure, which is what we are doing right now, had we deterred Putin, the 33 billion dollars that is now going to Ukraine would not have had to go to Ukraine,” said Green. “The president stair stepped the sanctions and it emboldened Putin. So, there are things we can do to fix it. It is just going to take some changes at the federal level. Changes that may mirror the incredible state of Tennessee.” “In Tennessee, we have the lowest capital debt in the country, one of the fastest growing economies, we have tens of thousands of people moving here from other states, driving our real estate prices up. Hey, have you tried to upgrade your houses lately?” “If we can get those kind of Tennessee values and Tennessee principals, at the federal level, we will be ok, but we just have to have different people winning general elections,” said Green.

Faith leaders share hope on National Day of Prayer
T
wo joint services for the National Day of Prayer were a success and brought to light how important it is to pray for one another, not only on this day, but every day.
The first Thursday in May in the United States is a day that is observed as a National Day of Prayer. In the community, there were many praying together in at least two formal gatherings, while still others are praying in the privacy of their homes, with friends or loved ones. This year, a number of faith leaders lead prayers on this day with the National Theme to “Exalt the Lord who has established us,” Colossians 2:6-7. Robert Shackelford shared a scripture from 1Thessolonians Chapter 5:16, with the words of Apostle Paul. “I think is it a message we can certainly take to heart on this day and every day. “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” Let us pray together, “Fa-
ther we praise and honor you as the true and living God. We acknowledge you as the creator of everything that exist. The giver of life and the
these things shall be added unto thee. So God we are seeking you right now, so in the name of Jesus, we pray that you continue to strengthen
highways and deliver the goods to our businesses,” said Wynn. “We just want God to be glorified and the people to be edified. Have your way God

author of salvation. We thank you for your love, your grace, your mercy and your patience that you exhibit for us each day. And we thank you for the may ways you have blessed us.” Pastor Clifford Wynn, Cypress Creek Baptist Church, prayed for businesses. “We are standing before you God on behalf of our businesses, you said if we first seek the kingdom of God in all your righteousness,
us as people and that it would be more about our fathers business. We pray for our local businesses for for prosperity. That we would be enhanced and that our cup would runneth over. We plead the blood of God over every business. We rely on you and pray for those who are relying on us. and pray that you touch our hearts that we will continue to lift you up and put your first,” said Wynn. Pastor Barry Bishop of Life Wind Covenant Church performed a lovely piece on the piano as well as a special performance from Leon Taylor of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Local pastors Clint Overton of Lakeview Church, Chris Thompson, First United Meth-
Stutts Barbee, coordinated a lovely event at the Michie Community Center featuring music by two Michie School teachers, Andea Whitten and Kayce Howard in addition to Dr. Matt Alred, principal of Michie School leading a prayer for EMS, police, fire and medical personnel. Bro. George Kyle, pastor, Trinity Baptist Church started the service in prayer. “Father thank you for blessing us,
thank you for using us. Father today we pray for Michie, Tennessee, and this area around here for our state, our nation. God, how we need a great awakening in our country and I pray we start right here in Michie. I pray you use us, your people as shining lights to let the gospel of Christ shine through us. Lura Geneva Seaton July 26, 1939
L
ura Geneva Seaton was born in the West Shiloh community on July 26, 1939 to Eldon Kennedy and Clyde Pickens Kennedy. Some of her early activities included playing baptizing in the creek with her five siblings, taking chewing gum (with Janell) from a nearby neighbor to who her father required them to return it, and practicing piano made out of a board with the keys drawn on, until such time her family could afford the real thing. Surrounded by music from the beginning of her life, her love of it lives on among the literally hundreds of students she taught throughout the area. She attended high school in Adamsville and was a member of the First Baptist Church where she began playing the piano at age fourteen. She has served as pianist, organist, choir member – and sometimes all three at the same time. It was here where she met the love of her life, Elmer Dee Seaton. They were married on May 10, 1959 and lived happily together until his death in 2017. Her main passions in life included her family and her music, both of which are evident in the legacy she leaves behind. Geneva leaves her and Elmer D.’s three children, two sons Rich-
ard Seaton (John Berger) of Washington, D.C., Ken Seaton (Amy) of Adamsville, and daughter Jennifer Cook (Michael) of Memphis, TN.; Four grandchildren, Andrew Seaton (Ruth) of The Netherlands, Amelia Seaton of Memphis, Alex Seaton (Jess) of Memphis, and Whit Cook of Scotland. One great grandson, William Seaton; and three step-grandchildren, Phillip Cook (Renee), Josh Cook (Nalee), and Minor Cook. She is survived by her cherished sisters, Janell Qualls and Genieve Smith and her beloved brother, Billy Joe Kennedy, and by many nieces and nephews. Along with her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Janet Littlefield and Geraldine Atkinson, her stepfather, Edward Traylor, and her stepbrother, Ed Traylor. Funeral services were held at the Adamsville First Baptist Church on Monday, May 9th at noon with Chad Ball and Michael Cook officiating. Interment followed the service at Pine Hill Memorial Gardens. “My Experience at State 4-H Congress” By Kylee Barclay McNairy County 4-H Reporter
S
tate 4-H Congress is an annual event that is held in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. If you are a 9th or 10th grader in 4-H, this event is open to you. If you win in the regional Public Speaking or Leadership contests, you get to attend as well, even if you’re in 11th or 12th grade. I received a scholarship attend and I also won 1st place in the Western Region History Bowl, meaning I got to compete at the state contest while at Congress. We stayed at a really nice hotel and we
Ben Dennis, Kylee Barclay, Hope Collins, Katie Briggs took coach busses from the hotel to State Capitol in Nashville. There were kids there from all 95 counties in Tennes-
see. We toured downtown Nashville and even got to participate in a scavenger hunt while we were there.
Kylee Barclay and Clara Boswell At Congress, we learned about how our Government works. We were divided into the House of Representa-

tives and the Senate. We even elected a Speaker of the House, Speaker of the Senate, and Governor. We voted on bills,
some of which passed while others were shot down during discussion. We got to meet with State Representative Ron Gant and State Senator Page Walley. They answered our questions and concerns on how our state government works. While in Nashville, we even go to ride the General Jackson Showboat and learn about its history. There was a band that played as we cruised up and down the Cumberland River. On the last night we had a really fancy banquet and then we got to have a dance. Overall I learned a lot from my trip to State 4-H Congress and made many new friends and lots of great memories.”
