Mo unites the ‘bros’ THE MEN at Harcourts Geelong and North Geelong embraced the moustache for last month’s Movember charity fundraiser. Clients, family members and friends sponsored Harcourts men to “grow a mo” during November. Harcourts North Geelong director Joe Grgic said funds raised were aimed at increasing awareness of prostrate cancer and male depression. Mr Grgic, who nick-named himself “Dirty Sanchez” or “El’ Guapo” during Movember, said his clean-shaven team registered at Movember.com at the start of the month. “The reaction at work has been positive, with people everywhere talking about it,” he said. “It’s a fun way to spread an important message about men’s health, although my wife has compared the bristles on my mo to that of a steel brush. “It’s a great cause and there are still people out there who don’t know what it’s about, so it’s quite amazing to explain why you have decided to grow a moustache.”
Mr Grgic described Movember men, or “mo bros”, as “walking, talking billboards”. “Through their actions and words they raise awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men’s health.” Mr Grgic said the team enjoyed the challenge despite some friendly office competition to “grow the best mo”. Harcourts Geelong agent Matthew Pearce praised the Movember initiative. Funds raised during Movember were shared between Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, BeyondBlue and Movember Foundation, Matthew said. “It’s a great initiative to raise awareness for men’s health, not just prostate cancer awareness but also mental health and wellbeing,” he said. “Men in general don’t like to discuss their health issues with other mates but I guess this sort of initiative is trying to remove the barriers in a light-hearted way.”

GEELONG home buyers have bucked a nation-wide real estate trend of favouring access to technology like wireless internet over proximity to schools and shops, according to real estate agents. Respondents in the Buzz Insurance “ideal suburb” survey ranked safety as “extremely” important, followed closely by reliable technology and amenities like restaurants, cinemas and cafes. The survey revealed that proximity to schools, parks and public transport ranked low on buyers’ wish lists. But Geelong real estate agents found the results “astounding”, saying easy access to shops and schools were the “most important” factors for buyers in the city First National McDonald and Co agent Michael Brennan said potential buyers had “never” questioned a home’s wireless internet or satellite TV compatibility. “For first-home buyers it’s about affordability so they can get their foot in the door,” Mr Brennan said. “I’ve never had anyone ask about wireless internet availability and I find the survey statistics astounding.” Harcourts Geelong agent Matthew Pearce said public transport was a high priority for Geelong buyers. “In Geelong we don’t have trams or easy access to trains, so proximity to public transport is still something most buyers ask about,” he said. “Easy access to the nearest shopping centre is still probably the biggest issue we get asked about.” Mr Pearce listed Newtown, Highton and Geelong West as the area’s most sought-after suburbs.
