Farewell to ‘gentleman’ of city property industry FAMILY, friends and former colleagues gathered on Monday to farewell Geelong real estate identity John ‘Max’ Carr. Mr Carr died on May 29 aged 83. He spent 35 years in the property industry with Geelong family business Walter L Carr and Sons Real Estate. The name this year moved under the Professionals banner. Professionals Geelong director Jason Barnett described the business’s former owner as “humorous”. “The first thing that comes to mind is Max was a real gentleman,” Mr Barnett said. “He always had the tie and pressed shirt and shiny shoes ready for business. “And even though he was quietly spoken he had a really good sense of humour.” Mr Barnett recalled a recent conversation with Mr Carr when the pair discussed changes in the Geelong real estate industry. “He said that even though real estate had changed a lot the interaction between the public and agents was still exactly the same. “It didn’t matter about technology or advertising, he said, it was still about helping people achieve the desired result. “Max always used to say that being a real estate agent was basically helping people move house.” Mr Barnett remembered the veteran Geelong

Farewelled: Max Carr. agent as a trustworthy man who was respected and widely known in the community. “I would often go up to Melbourne for different things and they’d ask whether I knew Max Carr,” he said. Mr Carr served as the president of Geelong’s
Real Estate Institute of Victorian branch, lectured evaluating at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and was an active member of Rotary Club of Geelong West. He also played a leading role helping migrants settle in Geelong. Mr Carr was 18 when he became the fourth generation to join the family real estate business when his father became ill. “I found myself smiling at parts of the funeral last week because it was a nice tribute with a bit of humour, which just summed up Max’s life perfectly,” Mr Barnett said.
‘Christmas’event for 3331 project GOLDEN Plains Shire will celebrate its lifestyle appeal with an annual black-tie dinner event titled Christmas in July. ResCom real estate agent and event founder Seka Powell said the charity fundraiser at Clyde Park Vineyard would promote the region’s produce and lifestyle while raising money for community services. Proceeds from this year’s prize auction and silent auction would go directly to Give Where You Live’s community impact project 3331 Youth Health, she said. “So far nearly $75,000 has been raised from the first four events,” Ms Powell said. “The funds were distributed to Give Where You Live [formerly United Way Geelong Region] for adolescent mental health programs.” Ms Powell said the 3331 Youth Health project aimed to reduce high-risk alcohol consumption to the state average in two to five years by engaging the community, sports groups, schools, local government and volunteers. Local businesses could donate goods, services or vouchers to the auction to support the Christmas in July event, she said. Donating businesses would have their prizes displayed on the night with “appropriate” promotional material. “All sponsors are listed in the event booklet and on the event website and guests are encouraged to support them in return for their generosity,” Ms Powell said.
