Regulations ‘to add more cost to new homes’ NEW State Government regulations will add thousands of dollars to the cost of a new home, according to builders. HIA Victorian executive director Gil King said the regulations, announced last week, required all new homes built from May 1, 2012 to include new “accessibility” features, including wider doorways, rein-forced bathroom walls and outside ramps. Mr King said the features were not “properly re-searched or costed”. “The announcement of these regulations, which could see every new home have a ramp to the front door, was buried in a document named A Fairer Victoria,” he said. Mr King estimated the planned accessibility features would add “about $5000” to the cost of a standard 180-square-metre home. “HIA members already voluntarily provide accessible homes where requested but imposing this on everyone is not a fair or practical approach.” The HIA fully supported improved accessibility in new homes and was a signatory to Federal Government’s Universal Housing Design standards, Mr King said.
