Uni on course to agents REAL ESTATE training and education in Geelong has entered a new era with Swinburne University of Technology running a new property course in the city, according to Fruit Property senior sales consultant David Phillips. He said the university started setting up for Certificate IV in Property Services (Real Estate) in Geelong after an overwhelming response to Swinburne’s online real estate programs and agents representative course. “I got involved with Swinburne while trying to do my full licence and the only place that it was offered was in Melbourne,” Mr Phillips said. “The Melbourne courses are mostly five-day programs for about $3000 and involve a lot of travelling. “I ended up doing an online course through Swinburne and they said they were interested in starting an agent’s night course in Geelong.” Mr Phillips said the Certificate IV night course was a positive breakthrough in educating Geelong’s agents. “It allows local agents to step up and get a better understanding of the real estate industry. “It’s a really big thing for Geelong because there hasn’t been this type

CITY of Greater Geelong has topped a new list of Victorian rural building permit values for 2011, according to new research. The Building Commission data released last week showed Geelong retained the number-one position for a second year with $794.1 million of building permits issued in the past financial year. Surf Coast Shire was fifth, with $279.4 million of permits. The commission’s Peter Donald said state-wide permit activity reached $24.3 billion in 2010/2011, up two per cent on the previous financial year. Mr Donald said the value of building permits issued in Victoria rose in every building category except domestic and public buildings. Domestic building permit values remained steady but public permits fell 35 per cent, he said. “The value of residential building permits finished in the 2010/2011 financial year was 70 per cent higher than 2009/2010 and the number of residential building permits rose 42 per cent,” he said. “Overall, while the value of building permits rose in 2010/2011, the number reported was six per cent lower than in 2009/10, which indicates that the past year was punctuated with some very large building permits, which will flow through to building industry activity.”
