Appeal launched for flood-affected offices QUEENSLAND’S devastating floods have hit close to home for Geelong’s two Harcourts offices. Geelong and North Geelong teams joined together this week in a relief appeal for their real estate colleagues in Queensland’s southeast. Harcourts North Geelong director Joe Grgic said more than 650 Harcourts offices across Australia will raise money for seven of the franchises’ floodaffected Queensland offices. “I think the situation in Queensland has touched everybody whether you know someone affected or even just seeing the images, it’s hard not to be affected,” Mr Grgic said. “It’s the sort of mass destruction you think we are immune from here in the lucky country.” Mr Grgic said offices in Jindalee and Goodna were still under water while teams in Rockhampton, Toowoomba, Warwick, Gympie and Maryborough had suffered “devastating” damage. Harcourts International managing
director Mike Green predicted a “challenging” few months for the company’s Queensland offices. “Clearly, all have been affected dramatically by what is occurring and will be for some time yet. Mr Green launched a national Harcourts Foundation appeal this week. “Harcourts Foundation is now co-ordinating a group-wide appeal over the next week for donations that will go either to the Queensland Premier’s Flood Relief Appeal or directly to the Harcourts Queensland team members who need that financial support right now. “Every dollar donated goes to the cause with no deductions whatsoever. “This is an incredibly tough time for all our team here in Queensland, but we are an incredibly tough and passionate group of people with an amazingly strong network who will support us.”

State Government promoting passive solar house design GEELONG new-home builders could save thousands of dollars on energy bills with a passive solar home design, according to Victorian premier Ted Baillieu. Mr Baillieu launched a new alliance between architectural advisory service Archicentre and Melbourne’s Robin Boyd Foundation last week, saying the alliance promoted “good, affordable and sustainable housing design” for Victorians. Mr Baillieu, a former Archicentre architect, said a “good house design” could cut household bills for energy and water. “Sustainable housing design means incorporating features such as passive solar design to keep houses warm in winter and cool in summer, minimising air-conditioning and heating costs,” he said. “Trained architects use passive solar design to combine materials, methods, building form and the sun’s natural energy to provide yearround comfort in a house. “Many Victorians may not be aware that a passive solar home can save them thousands of dollars and add extra value to the home when it is sold.” Mr Baillieu said the alliance also created a “wider awareness” of Robin Boyd’s “significant work and design approach”. Mr Boyd was an influential architect, best known for his inexpensive and functional small house designs between 1940 and 1971. “Robin Boyd may have died 40 years ago this year, but his legacy in improving the lives of Victorian’s is still strong today,” Mr Baillieu said.
