Judy ‘thrilled’to receive REIV community award CJ KEANE and Company Corio branch manager Judy Richards has won an award for her tireless work in the Geelong community. Ms Richards was “thrilled” to accept a REIV Geelong division community ward last week for her involvement with Geelong charity organisation United Way. “I started at United Way as a loaned executive to help raise awareness of the organisation in 2007,” Ms Richards said. “I’ve also done a lot of work encouraging people in Geelong to join a Workplace Giving Program, which involves having a certain amount of money directly debited from your account each week for the charity.” Ms Richards said the benefits of donating to the charity through the program this way far outweighed the small weekly sacrifice. “By giving the equivalent amount of a couple of cups of coffee each week directly out of my pay I don’t miss it, but the cumulative effect is felt in the community by the generosity of the many who contribute in this way is huge. “United Way uses 100 per cent of all the money collected in Geelong, so we are supporting our local community.” Ms Richards volunteered on United Way’s allocations panel in 2008 - 2009. “We have to allocate all the money coming into the organisation to our various community partners,” she said. “They then provide health and human care services to Geelong people.” In 2008 she also travelled to Mozambique for a community aid program. “It was such an awesome experience,” she said. “We worked with a pastor who supports a 150-child orphanage.”

Home building ‘on the wane’ HOPE for an industry recovery is evaporating as the number of new home loans hits a 12 month low, according to a Housing Industry Association (HIA) report. The report revealed a 3.5 per cent decline in new home lending in Victoria, marking the sixth consecutive drop since October. HIA chief economist Harley Dale said the downward trend was “disturbing”. “It does nothing to instil confidence in the prospects for the recovery in new residential construction that extends beyond this year,” Mr Dale said. “We have a tight credit availability, and obstacles related to land supply, planning and infrastructure charges and taxation. “These forces are standing in the way of a sustainable lift in new construction in 2011.” Mr Dale called for an easing of tight credit conditions. “Otherwise the financial strain on renters and entry level buyers will only worsen and upward pressure on interest rates will intensify,” he said. Mr Dale said the non first-home buyer market had weakened, so it would fail to fill the void left by the removal of the First Home Owner boost. This month State Government extended its first-home buyers bonus by 12 months but limited the grant to newly constructed homes. Real Estate Institute of Victoria chief executive officer Enzo Raimondo said the increased bonus for new homes failed to help the 70 per cent of buyers who purchased existing dwellings. He labelled the $2000 slash in assistance “disappointing”. “It appears that the removal of the $2000 First Home Bonus for existing homes pays for the $2000 increase for new homes,” Mr Raimondo said. “This measure will make it harder for 70 per cent of first-home buyers and easier for 30 per cent.”
