Newtown history for sale A BUILDING that once housed the Newtown and Chilwell Council chambers has come on the market, presenting a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity not just for buyers. Fruit Property senior sales consultant Sherene Pipkorn said the historic property at 271 Pakington Street, Newtown, was a rare opportunity to purchase a “true slice of Geelong history”. “Where else can you have dinner in a ballroom,” Ms Pipkorn laughed. “It’s a rare privilege that we would get to sell a property so iconic and locally significant.” Geelong architect T J Buchan designed the stately property, which opened in 1916 as the Newtown and Chilwell Council chambers. The building was more recently used by Barwon Region Child Health Centre. Heritage Victoria described the property as a Renaissance revival design that reworked Michelangelo’s Porta Pia in Rome. The latest owners have also revived and reworked the building, faithfully retaining period features and detail. Ms Pipkorn said the owners had even kept original glass doors inscribed with ‘Council Chamber’ and a small stage area in one of the living rooms. “It really makes your mind wonder what kind of meetings would have taken place and the important decisions that were made,” she said. “It’s been transformed into such a liveable family home but still has those gorgeous period features that make it historically significant and interesting. “It really is one of a kind and there is no property in Geelong like it.” Ms Pipkorn said the property had attracted “plenty of interest”, with almost 50 groups viewing the building at last weekend’s inspection. “Everyone has said it’s an amazing renovation and a lot of people have loved the high ceilings, the swimming pool area and the home’s privacy. “There is also potential for someone to use

LARA’S rapid population increase will be responsible for more intensive housing developments, according to Geelong’s council. Councillors voted at last week’s meeting to publicly exhibit plans for a one-hectare housing development on vacant land at Kees Road, which was previously used as a quarry. Council refused a similar rezoning request for the site because of concern over unstable fill used to replace 6.4 metres of the quarried land. Gattini and Partners applied for the rezoning amendment on behalf of the landowners, the Benincasa family. Planning portfolio holder councillor Andrew Katos said the Benincasa family had promised to replace the original filling with “engineered filling” to council’s satisfaction. They had also devised a stormwater management plan. “Council’s municipal strategic statement identifies the Lara township as a growth area and at present the township is experiencing a rapid population increase. “The Kees Road site is centrally located and provides a good opportunity for urban housing development in the township.” Geelong council will advertise the amendment, C216, subject to authorisation from Planning Minister Justin Madden.
