GEELONG house hunters have copped another setback but investors and owners have prospered as property prices soar in an ever-tightening market, according to a Real Estate Institute of Victoria spokesperson. An REIV September report revealed median property prices in Geelong had jumped 15.8 per cent in the past 12 months. REIV chief executive officer Enzo Raimondo said demand for housing in regional Victoria had outstripped Melbourne. The tighter market was also a problem for renters, Mr Raimondo said. “Vacant rental properties are scarcer in regional Victoria, which also highlights the demand for housing there.” Median house prices in Geelong increased from $330,000 to $382,000 over the period. Surf Coast recorded regional Victoria’s smallest increase at 1.7 per cent, while Macedon Ranges Shire had the highest at 29.4 per cent, from $405,000 to $524,000. Mr Raimondo expected the “current housing situation” to worse. “While population continues to grow and unemployment remains low, the REIV expects the current conditions in the regional housing market to continue,” he said.

URBAN Development Institute of Australia members had a chance to dress up and let down their hair at last week’s Geelong Cup. Ladies with stylish hats and men in classic suits spent the day socialising and taking the odd punt in the UDIA Geelong Cup tent. UDIA Women in Property Chapter hosted the event for the organisation’s development and consultant company members. Victorian branch events coordinator Anucia De Boer hailed the event as “a great success”. “We all had such a great day with great weather, lovely people and a really good atmosphere,” Ms De Boer said. “It was a great chance for our members to let their hair down and chill out, especially at this busy time of the year.” Rivalry was fierce as UDIA fillies and stallions strutted their stuff in the tent’s mini fashions on the field competition, she said. “The guys were actually more competitive than the girls,” she laughed. “We got most of the guys who attended to enter, which was great. “After the women and men had paraded we awarded prizes to the best dressed in each category and also to the best hat.” Ms De Boer said a punters club organised on the day raised $400 for the UDIA’s charity, Ardoch House. ”We ended up with about 55 people and one of the members ran a punters club, which people bought in on,” she said. “This is the second time we’ve run the event and we’re really pleased with how it went. “It’s a great chance to get out of the office, dress up a bit and enjoy a fun day of socialising with the other members.”
