Office gets a gong for green A LARA real estate office has gone green, reduced its carbon footprint and won an environmental award. Allpoints@McManus director Tony McManus accepted the Victorian Employers Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VECCI) environmental award in Melbourne recently. The Grow Me the Money program awarded businesses for their implementation of a sustainability program. “This award was for the best implementation of a 24-point action plan to reduce our carbon footprint,” Mr McManus said. “Our plan included the use of double-sided printing on the office printers, recycling paper, switching computers off at the end of the day and keeping heating and cooling systems well-maintained. “Perhaps most important was the drought-tolerant garden that we planted at the office as an example for our clients and to showcase water conservation and low-maintenance landscaping.” Mr McManus said the garden had caught the eye of landlords inspiring them to spruce up their own droughtravaged plants.

“It’s designed to keep the presentation of the property up in value by being neat and tidy,” he said. “We’ve proven that you can still have a nice looking property that is low maintenance and environmentally friendly. “Some of our landlords are also using the green tips that we have been publishing in our monthly newsletter. Mr McManus said the win was a “team effort”. “I enrolled in the program initially but it wasn’t until office staff Nicole Riemer and Marie Kukanovski came on board that it really took off,” he said. “I call them the green team and they’ve been the ones to come up with the ideas in the action plan and to implement them. “We know we’re just scratching the surface and there’s so much more we can do and we’re enjoying being involved in something new and feel like it’s a positive thing for us to be associated with.” Geelong firm of architects Third Ecology also won a VECCI award in a separate category for putting in place a range of initiatives to boost office efficiency.

ALL THE action of the UCI Road World Championships is just out the front door for many Central Geelong businesses. But for the team at ResCom the event spilled off the road and into the Malop Street office this week. ResCom director Tom Powell explained that the Italian team’s management contacted him about a space for their nightly meetings during the event. “They’re staying in a motel across the road, which doesn’t have a conference facility,” Mr Powell said. “They spotted our meeting room through the window and put forward a proposal to us and we agreed. “They will use the room between 9pm and 11pm each night during the event.” Mr Powell said his staff had adopted the Italian team as their second favourites in the competition. “We’re so pleased to be involved in the event and we have a little Italian Cycling Federation banner in our board room,” he said. “I told them they’re our second favourite team next to the Aussies.” Mr Powell believed the event was beneficial for Geelong’s real estate market. “It will show off our facilities and will certainly build Geelong’s profile around the world.
