‘Rare’heritage style mix escapes bulldozers

Fine villa: Lismore in Kilgour Street is considered a rare example of early Geelong architecture.

HISTORIC homes are a rare find in the Geelong property market, with many demolished over the years to make way for housing sub-divisions. One building that has managed to escape the bulldozers is a stately, two storey villa at 126 Kilgour Street, Geelong. This two-storey brick and basalt stone villa was built in 1854-55 for Albert Hutchinson, firstly as a four-room cottage. An additional storey was added in 1860. The style is a combination of Australian regency colonial and Italianate details of the upper floor. Heritage Victoria calls Lismore one of the finest architectural examples of an early central Geelong villa. Buxton selling agent Will Ainsworth said heritage properties like Lismore were rare as hens’ teeth. “They’re very popular when they do

pop up in the Geelong market,” Mr Ainsworth said. The property had already attracted interest in its short time advertised for sale, he said. Mr Ainsworth predicted the property could attract the attention of an out-oftown buyer. “It could be a large family moving down to Geelong or someone wanting to turn the manor into a bed and breakfast or even a home business. “There is nothing else like this property in the Geelong market at the moment, with its combination of history and location. “With six bedrooms and three bathrooms and its big atrium, the building has a versatile floor-plan and the servant’s quarters, with its bathroom and two bedrooms, would be ideal for a bed and breakfast operation.”

WHILE spectators crowded both sides of last week’s UCI World Road Championships course, a Geelong real estate agency secured the best seat in the house for the international event. First National Real Estate McDonald & Co celebrated the event on top of Moorabool Street’s KFC building. Director Greg McDonald, whose agency leases the top floor of the building, said a list of international cycling celebrities joined clients and employees to watch the event from Thursday to Sunday. Mr McDonald said the roof of the building was an ideal vantage point to view the course from the waterfront to the finish line. “It was a magnificent view,” Mr McDonald said. “We also had the big screen on the road below us and another big screen on the roof. “We even showed the grand final on Saturday, so we had all the bases covered.” Mr McDonald said the event “showed off” his agency’s recent re-branding
