Estate calls for ideas on street names GEELONG people have the chance to add to the history books with naming rights for streets in Armstrong Creek’s first residential estate. Warralily general manager Mark Whinfield said residents from across the region could nominate family members or friends who had played significant roles in the area. Mr Whinfield said Warralily initiated the project when a local family sought to have a street named after their late father, who died in 2009. Ian Morris, was a civil engineer who was involved in many of Geelong’s development projects. Mr Whinfield said the family believed that naming a street in Mr Morris’s honour would be “a perfect tribute”. “Widely respected in the local development and planning community, the Morris family made the appeal believing it would be a
suitable way for their father to be remembered to have his name recognised in the Warralily development which is part of the area he served for so long,” he said. “It is people like Ian Morris who Warralily is wanting to hear about when nominations open.” Mr Whinfield encouraged nominations of people and families with “strong ties” to the Connewarre and Mount Duneed areas or anyone else who had made a significant contribution to the region. “The people nominated do not necessarily need to be famous or infamous. In fact, it is individuals like Ian who have made such a huge impact behind the scenes that we’re interested in.” Mr Whinfield said nominations and more information was available at www.warralily.com.au.
State ‘leading on building’but HIA ‘still unconvinced’

VICTORIA is leading the nation in housing supply, according to state Planning Minister Matthew Guy. Mr Guy said new Housing Industry Association statistics revealed record levels of dwelling approvals in Victoria. HIA recorded 5804 approved dwellings for Victoria in December, which was 40 per cent of all approvals nationally. Mr Guy said Victoria’s dwelling approvals increased 11.4 percent from November, with an increase of seven per cent since December, 2009. “The Coalition is committed to speeding up the planning system, improving the planning scheme amendment process and releasing land more quickly,” he said. But HIA chief economist Andrew Harvey was unconvinced. Mr Harvey said approvals of “other private-sector dwellings” – flats, townhouses and apartments – had almost singularly driven up December’s record statistics while house approvals remained flat. Building approvals for houses had decreased 16 per cent last year, he said. “Private other sector dwellings is a notoriously volatile market segment, so it’s hard to read too much into this result. “However, a modest upward trend is evident and in the current climate anything pointing to an improvement in residential building is highly welcome.”
