Minister opens Geelong housing for at-risk oldies

Disguised: Colourful and flamboyant masks hid local faces but many revealed their true identities later in the evening.

Masquerading for a cause RESCOM’S Seka Powell has hailed the success of a black-tie masquerade ball to raise money for a program helping youths in Golden Plains Shire. Ms Powell helped organise Golden Plains Christmas in July, which she said raised $25,000 for the mental health project. Ms Powell said the annual black-

tie event, at Clyde Park Vineyard on the Midland Highway, promoted the region’s produce, wine and lifestyle. She labelled the dinner a “key event” on the region’s social calendar. “The 2011 event featured a masquerade theme with many of the 150 people wearing elaborate masks,” Ms Powell said.

“More than 50 businesses throughout the region have supported the event during the past three years with prizes for the major auction and a silent auction.” Ms Powell said proceeds went directly to Give Where You Live’s mental health support program for the region’s youth. “This year Give Where You Live

will be working on a community impact project called 3331 Youth Health,” she said. “This project aims to reduce the level of high-risk alcohol consumption to the state average in two to five years by engaging the community, sports groups, schools, local government and volunteers.”

HOUSING Minister Wendy Lovell has officially opened two affordable housing sites in Highton and Manifold Heights to cater for elderly people at risk of homelessness. Ms Lovell said the two developments were part of a State Government renovation and construction project funding 76 similar estates across Victoria. The Highton project, in Cranwell Court, included 34 one-bedroom units and a community room, worth $9.4 million. The Manifold Heights site, in Malvern Grove, Wendy Lovell included six new onebedroom units and the renovation of existing homes to suit disabled residents. Not-for-profit housing agency Wintringham Housing and charitable trust Alexander Miller Estate developed a special partnership with the government to redevelop the 76 estates, Ms Lovell said. She praised Wintringham Housing and Alexander Miller Estate for providing the “high quality and affordable accommodation” in Geelong. The renovation and construction project also included new housing estates in Shepparton, Euroa, Ballarat, Maryborough, St Arnaud, Castlemaine and Benalla.
