Old blue jeans help cause STAFF AT Hocking Stuart Geelong know that a good pair of jeans is a manditory fashion item in any wardrobe. Last Friday the team paraded a variety of the latest styles as well as some oldfashioned favourites in a fundraising day for genetic disease research. Skinny leg, flair, hipster and stone-washed jeans were all worn to the office for the Genes for Jeans Day fundraiser. Hocking Stuart Geelong director Leigh Melbourne said one in 20 children were born with some sort of genetic fault. “Chances are you probably know someone who has a genetic disease,” Mr Melbourne said. “There are children with leukaemia, muscular dystrophy, genetic defects and many other disorders. “The scientists at the Children’s Medical Research Institute are working to prevent these diseases before they occur in children, or to develop better treatment.” Mr Melbourne was happy to support the “fantastic” cause. “It’s not every day you see real estate agents out of their suits and conducting appointments in jeans but in order to raise awareness of such a fantastic cause we were more than willing to break the status quo,” he said. “All staff at Hocking Stuart Geelong made an individual donation to the cause, with the company matching dollar for dollar what was raised by staff.”

Youth project benefits from tin shed bash RESCOM Real Estate celebrated Christmas early this year when it teamed up with a local winery to present Bannockburn’s fundraising event of the year. ResCom directors Tom and Seka Powell joined forces with Clyde Park Winery’s Terry Jongebloed and Sue Dixon for the successful Christmas in July function. A tin shed on a Bannockburn hill was transformed into a lavish function centre for the event, attracting many people from the Geelong and Golden Plains business communities. The event showcased some of the region’s best food and wine to the 150 guests in attendance. Ms Powell said the event raised $20,000 for a Golden Plains Shire and United Way Geelong youth health program. She said $50,000 had been raised for the project over the past three years. “The aim is to run an adolescent health program aimed at reducing high-risk, alcohol-related behaviour for youth in the 3331 postcode area, starting later this year,” Ms Powell said.
