‘Toxic tax’threat to building costs for home buyers

Oval,waterways ‘benefit for Leopold community’ LEOPOLD residents will soon have access to a super-sized sport facility and wetlands within the town’s Estuary estate, according to its developer. Villawood Properties’ Rory Costelloe said the five-hectare site on Melaluka Road would feature a multi-purpose oval with football posts, a soccer pitch and a 350square-metre pavilion. Mr Costelloe said the sports field bordered a wetland system with

GEELONG housing affordability will suffer another blow under the Gillard Government’s carbon tax, according to an industry chief. Housing Industry Association’s Graham Wolfe predicted the tax would cut jobs in the region’s residential building and manufacturing sector and increase the cost of new homes. “Families buying a new home will now face additional building costs and higher mortgage repayments,” Mr Wolfe said. “New housing is already designed and built to meet stringent energy regulations that make them substantially more energy efficient than existing homes. “Lifting the cost of new homes further through a new tax, without any benefit at all, makes no sense.” Liberal Senator Michael Ronaldson said the “toxic” carbon tax would increase pressure on Geelong’s struggling housing market. The tax would add at least $5000 to the cost of an average new home, he said. “Home buyers will see an increase of $36 a month in repayments on an average mortgage of $340,000,” Mr Ronaldson said. “Families buying a new home will be hit with higher building costs, bigger mortgages and the price they pay for electricity and gas will just keep going up and up under Julia Gillard’s carbon tax. “This toxic carbon tax will hit young families hard.”
