Leon wins another gong GEELONG real estate veteran Leon Gleeson wasn’t looking for a future in the industry when he settled into a job as an “office girl” for local agency Cuthbertson’s in 1962. Flat broke from overseas travels, the then-22year-old was hired as a receptionist but spent 45 years with the business, eventually claiming the title of managing director. Mr Gleeson received a Westpac REIV Geelong division Community Service Award last week for his contribution to the industry and his community work. The award added to a long list of achievements for the now self-employed agent. Mr Gleeson said he was particularly proud of a Keystone Award for his involvement in the
Ararat Youth Club along with a life membership of Geelong Rostrum and various Rotary Club and Real Estate Institute of Victoria achievement certificates. “It’s nice to be recognised for my contribution,” he said. After 45 years with Cuthbertson’s, Mr Gleeson retired but was “forced” back into the industry. “I retired and was going to play golf but I ended up having people calling me needing my help,” he said. “Since then my golf game hasn’t improved and I’m back to working almost full-time, just by myself, though.” Despite a full work calendar, Mr Gleeson said he enjoyed chairing school debates and working
with the Rotary Club of Geelong. Mr Gleeson also served a term as the youngest South Barwon Shire president which, he said, had taught him the importance of public speaking. “It’s a skill I’ve worked really hard to pass on to younger generations,” he said. Mr Gleeson also served as state president of both Real Estate Institute of Victoria and Real Estate Salesman’s Association. “It’s important to me that I make time for all of these things because the experiences you take out of it are so beneficial.” “It’s been very challenging but also very rewarding.”

VICTORIA’S housing affordability crisis has claimed another category of victims, according to the state opposition. Liberal MP Wendy Lovell said renters were now struggling with higher rents and a rapidly declining vacancy rate. Ms Lovell said rising interest rates and a limited affordable housing had locked investors out of the market, with “vulnerable” renters paying the price. No-vacancy rates had forced the number of families living in their cars, tents or at caravan parks to increase, she said. Mr Lovell pointed out that Geelong’s rental vacancy rate was 0.7 per cent in April. “The private rental market is becoming increasingly out of reach for too many families,” she said. “Nothing demonstrates this more clearly than the rise in the number of families now languishing on the public housing waiting list, which increased by 1013 in the March quarter to 39,794 applicants. The median weekly rents in regional Victoria grew by 6.5 per cent in the year to March 2010.” Ms Lovell called on Housing Minister Richard Wynne to reveal the extent of Victoria’s private rental crisis in a March Quarter 2010 Rental Report. “Only when the full report has been released will we be able to see the extent of Victoria’s private rental crisis and truly grasp the realities facing families battling crippling rental shortage and rising rents,” she said. “The Housing Minister knew 12 months ago it was getting harder for low-income families to keep roofs over their heads in Melbourne when he told a parliamentary committee there was no affordable accommodation for low-income families within 15 kilometres of Parliament House.” A 2010 State of the Regions’ Report released last week confirmed the dire situation for renters, warning the affordability crisis would take “a decade or two of intense policy application” to fix. Australian Local Government Association president Geoff Lake said the country needed “sustainable solutions”. Mr Lake blamed the housing shortage on under-investment in infrastructure and misguided industry policy. “The government ministers should turn their minds to the real problem and I hope this State of Regions Report helps them to focus on it.”
