Mine laid at museum FORT Queenscliff Museum has accessioned its newest artefact with the donation of an old sea mine discovered at a Villawood Properties estate in Leopold. Villawood’s executive director, Rory Costelloe, said the rusty mine casing was one of the more unusual objects uncovered during construction works in his experience. Mr Costelloe said workers unearthed the mine during excavations for a sewer trench last month. The empty mine was previously used as a cooling device in an old dairy farm in the region, Mr Costelloe said. He had heard that using sea mines as incinerators was previously common among properties on the Bellarine Peninsula. “It’s not every day you uncover a piece of valuable local history, so naturally the find has intrigued the community,” Mr Costelloe said. “The old shell had been recycled for farm use. Apparently it’s quite a common occurrence throughout the Bellarine Peninsula, although the previous land owner has assured us this would be a one-off find and that there are no others on the Villawood estate. “We’re delighted to be presenting this historic object to the Fort Queenscliff Museum where it will be displayed for members of the community to admire.”
