New feds must fix affordability, says HIA expert AS THE nation’s two major political parties wait on the result of the federal election, Australia’s Housing Industry Association has called on the new Federal Government to fix a “severe” national housing supply crisis, according to a HIA spokesperson. HIA chief economist Harley Dale said a 12.9 per cent decline in Victoria’s new-home sales highlighted a need for a federal “housing action plan”. “There needs to be a re-doubling of efforts to reduce the impact of regulation, development charging and excessive taxation on the cost of new housing supply.” Mr Dale said builders had noticed a lack of confidence in the market since April. He called forthe next government to implement a three-key policy plan including a housing cost reduction program, a housing and development ministry and support for small business. Interest rate hikes and rising home values had contributed to the housing supply shortage, Mr Dale said.

BUXTON Highton hopes to bag a trifecta as part of the group’s awards for most-productive office.
