The Sunday Tribune together with Sanlam made their 67 minutes count this Mandela Day as they engaged in a Beach Clean-up at Wilson’s Wharf. After the recent floods that occurred in April, the beaches in KZN were left in quite a state with debris that washed out during the flooding. Over 60 people from Sanlam, the Sunday Tribune and DSW attended the clean-up. The Durban Municipality (DSW) not only sanctioned the initiative but also provided everyone with garbage bags, gloves and removed all the waste that was collected on the day.

Cape Times and Nando’s do good in handing over meals on Mandela Day

For Mandela Day, members of the Cape Times team facilitated the handover of meals sponsored by Nando’s Durbanville to youth at the Durbanville Children’s Home. Nando’s general manager for the Western Cape, Itumeleng Mogotsi and regional marketing manager, Christelle Scott were among the Nando’s team. The Durbanville Children’s Home is home to 144 children and is one of the oldest children’s homes in South Africa. “The children come from environments that are not conducive to nurturing and growing well-grounded, well-adjusted and spirited young people,” says Johanna Strauss, manager for marketing and fundraising at Durbanville Children’s Home.

Daily News visited the Waterloo Crisis Centre, north of Durban to spend 67 minutes making a difference. The Centre looks after the elderly, providing them with food so they can take their medication. They also look after children of all ages and have a creche. The Centre’s wish list for Mandela Day was a double deep sink, gas stove, 3x doors, food packs, juice, and fruits for children. The Daily News partnered with Sunrise Fruiterers who sponsored fruits for the kids and cupcakes from The Baking Pan, both based in Overport.
