SOMERSET LODGE PROVIDES QUALITY ASSISTED LIVING

“ASSISTED living” is, by definition, a health-care offering to someone who requires nursing intervention to be able to see to their daily living activities. These residents might well require “frail care” during the course of their aged years and it is comforting for the person to be in familiar surroundings, with staff and routines they already know.

At Somerset Lodge Care Centre, in Somerset Park, Durban North, our nurses are highly trained and, under the instruction of a GP, are able to administer and monitor drips (IVs); commence residents on oxygen via a concentrator or oxygen cylinder; commence enteral nutrition (peg feeds) and phlebotomy (the drawing of blood), among other services. This means our residents can have the services they require in their own units, without having to go to hospital or a doctor’s room. Hospital stays often cause anxiety and fear in the elderly.

Many seniors remain in South Africa when their children and grandchildren relocate, so it is comforting to know your parents can also live independently at Somerset Lodge Care Centre, while having the safety net of 24-hour care, in case of an emergency.

Here, residents are encouraged to take short walks through the estate, either accompanied or on their own, while those who are wheelchair bound are taken for outings by the caregivers. Our services also include:

• Twice weekly chair physio exercises are conducted at no extra charge.

• Activities such as bingo, quiz, bowling and crafts.

• Twice weekly occupational therapy classes are conducted at no extra charge.

• Hairdresser and beautician services on site.

• A variety of entertainers are engaged to provide entertainment for residents on a monthly basis.
