Parent-Teacher conferences will be held for Lennox School District students on September 29th and October 6th and, on February 2nd and 9th. Parents of elementary students will have an assigned time which will be sent home with your student. Parents of middle school students will have student led conferences with assigned times. High school conferences will be held in the high school cafetorium on a come and go basis during conference times.
KINDERGARTEN START DATES In an effort to ease the transition for the 2013-14 kindergarten students as they learn school procedures and meet their new kindergarten friends, there will be two starting dates next fall for kindergarten students. Students with last names beginning with A-N will attend Monday, Aug. 25 and then every day starting on the 27th (no school on the 26th). Students with last names beginning with O-Z and any students attending the Totally Kids Program, will attend their first day of school on Tuesday, Aug. 26. All Kindergarten students will attend on Wednesday, August 27. All Junior Kindergarten students will begin school on Aug. 25 and attend every day.
NEW SCHOOL START/END TIMES There will be new start/end times for school due to the new common planning days on the school calendar. Lennox and Worthing Elementary start at 8:20am and dismiss at 3:30pm. LWC Middle School start 8:15am and dismiss 3:30pm. LHS start at 8:15am and dismiss at 3:25pm.

ello! My name is Kirk Easton and I am the new Superintendent of Lennox School District. I am both humbled and honored to have been selected to serve this district and will work tirelessly to ensure success for all students. The Lennox School District has a proud tradition of academic excellence, and I only see the bar being raised higher. In order to continue to raise the level of student performance and overall program quality, I recognize the need to attract and retain the very best teachers, administrators, and support staff. I also recognize the important role parents have in the education of their children. I encourage the active participation between home and school in each child’s educational journey. We have to also acknowledge that the technology that has so dramatically changed the world outside our school is now changing the learning and teaching environment within it. With this in mind, we must be driven to
provide technology that will provide opportunities for learner-control, increased motivation, and connections to the real world. Lastly, my goal for all children is to develop the character needed to face challenges and adversity. This is what I like to call grit. Kids need to learn that life is not always fair and that there are consequences for their choices –both good and bad, and that those who are willing to work hard for their dreams can achieve them. My mother gave me this quote and it reflects my thoughts on education-“let us prepare our kids for the road, not prepare the road for our kids.” As the start of the new 2014-2015 school year approaches, so do the number of events associated with the start of school. I look forward to meeting each of you personally or at community events. uly 4th has come and gone. The school year will begin shortly. Many of our students have spent a lot of time around our building this summer in the weight room, at athletic camps, at band and flag practices, in drivers’ education classes, and other events. It seems like the only summer break many of our students have is break from the classroom. Our first day of school will be August 25. Our school day will be a little longer this year. We are adding several early dismissals to the calendar for teacher in-service. To compensate for those short days we’ll be adding 10 minutes to the school day, and our class periods will move from 85-minute blocks to 90-minute blocks. Our school day will run from 8:15 a.m. to 3:25 p.m. each day. Another change our students will see is a change in our staff. Shane Heilman has joined the Rapid City Stevens administrative team as a vice principal. Josh Kirchner is the new middle school science teacher in Brookings. John Silvernail has joined the Parker Schools
as a language arts/social studies teacher and head wrestling coach. We will miss them all. However, we were fortunate to be able to hire some great people to take their places in the classroom. Mr. Heilman’s position will be filled by Kerri Kirchenmann, a veteran teacher who taught in Dell Rapids last year. Jared Ailts will be our Biology/Outdoor Science teacher. He is a recent graduate of SDSU. Kory Williamson returns to the classroom in Mr. Silvernail’s place after a year’s sabbatical in USD’s PDC Program. Also, joining us for his first official year as classroom teacher is Christopher Cameron. Mr. Cameron spent a semester with us last year as a long-term substitute following the resignation of Chris Peterson. Mr. Cameron is a graduate of USD and will teach Physical Science, Physics, Earth Science, and Foundations of Chemistry. Our freshman and sophomore students and their parents will be able to meet all of our new staff at the Fall Fling on August 20, at 6:00 in the evening. While our Fall Fling format is directed more toward our freshman and sophomore contingency, all students and their parents are
welcome. In addition to meeting our staff and covering points-of-emphasis on some of the more important matters that affect students, the students will receive their class schedules and locker assignments. Parents will have the opportunity to fill out required paperwork, purchase activity tickets, put money into the lunch accounts, and pay fees associated with high school. Everyone will have the opportunity to roam around the building to visit the classrooms and the classroom teachers. Computers will not be handed out until the first day of school. Our junior and senior parents and students are invited to attend the Junior-Senior Experience on August 21, at 6:00 p.m. College and vocational school and military representatives will be here to share information about their respective institutions. A session on financial assistance will also be presented. This is a very important event designed to get our students and their parents thinking about the future, as our juniors and senior students will soon be out on their own. We look forward to seeing you on August 20 or August 21.

he 2014-15 school year is approaching very quickly. To any new families and students to our district, we welcome you to our community and schools. The staff of LWC Middle School also welcomes our incoming 6th grade class. Every year there are a few staff changes within our school. For the 2014-15 school year we welcome one new staff member to the middle school, Matthew Rabine. Mr. Rabine has 7 years of teaching experience and will be teaching 6th grade Language Arts and Reading. Open House for the middle school will be on August 18. The format of the Open House will change slightly from past years. We are going to open for 6th graders at 6:30 in the LWC Cafetorium. Seventh and eighth graders will meet at 7 p.m. in the LWC Gymnasium. We
hope that this staggered start time will allow more opportunities for our incoming 6th graders and parents to ask the questions they may have. We will meet for a brief period of time as a large group before moving to your child’s homeroom and receiving locker information. Our beginning of the year paper-work will also be distributed a little bit differently this year. Instead of picking those forms up at Open House, those forms will be available online for you to print, fill out at your convenience and turn in on the Open House night. We will also have copies available for you in the office if you need a hard copy of these forms. • August 25 is the first day of school for students. • The length of the school day has been lengthened slightly this year. (8:15-3:30) • Homecoming Week will be September 22-26 - we will again collect food items for the Food Pantry as a community service project. • Parent-Teacher Conferences will be during the first and third quarters. We have scheduled our 1st Quarter conference dates for September 29th and October 6th and our 3rd Quarter dates will be February 2nd and 9th. In recent years, we have made changes to the scheduling aspect of these conferences so there will be times allotted to visit with all staff. Welcome back!! I hope you all had a great summer. But I also hope you are looking forward to the 2014-15 school year.

We bring back a majority of the staff from last year and have a few fresh faces. Mrs. Jen Nielson will be our new 2nd grade teacher. She has filled many long term substitute jobs in the elementary the past few years as well as substituting on a daily basis the last three years. Miss Melissa Vlastuin will be replacing Becky Kuyper this school year in 2nd grade. Mrs. Kuyper will still be with the district. She will mentor Miss Vlastuin and Mr. Lutes. All three educators are obtaining their Master’s
Degrees through the Professional Development Center (PDC) at USD. Mr. Trey Manitz will be teaching 4th grade this coming school year. He is replacing Mr. Anderson who moved down to 3rd grade. Mr. Manitz has spent the past two years teaching at West Central. We welcome all our new staff to Lennox Elementary!!! Lennox Elementary will be updating its Google site regularly throughout the school year. Please take time to get familiar with it as staff will be posting valuable information for you. The website is: https://sites.google.com/ site/lennoxelementary. Our open house will be held on August 18th from 5:30-6:15 p.m.. This gives parents and students the opportunity to meet with teachers.

ime flies when you’re having sun (or fun?)! Summer does go by so quickly, and soon the backpacks will be filled with brand-new school supplies. The kids and the teachers will all be ready to start the 2014-15 school year. We have a few teachers to whom we need to say “goodbye”. Shana Wagers, our former fourth grade teacher, accepted a position with the Harrisburg School District. We will certainly miss her leadership but wish her the best in a new district much closer to her home. Jacque Smidt, our PDC teacher in the third grade, completed her Master’s Degree and accepted a position in Waseca, MN. We enjoyed getting to know Miss Smidt and wish her the best as well in Minnesota. Therefore, we have a few new faces at Worthing Elementary! Tara Oltmanns will be
teaching third grade at Worthing. She has five years of teaching experience with the Sioux Falls School District. Ms. Oltmanns is also a Lennox High School graduate and worked with the Totally Kids program from 2006-2009. She has a kind heart and a variety of experiences from which to draw. Welcome, Ms. Oltmanns! Blake Crosby will be our new fourth grade teacher. Blake attended Buena Vista University and had some long-term subbing experiences in the winter of 2014 in Fairmont, MN. Mr. Crosby will also be coaching football and wrestling at Lennox High School this coming school year. Blake’s parents are both teachers so he has been around educators his entire life! We are excited to have him join our Worthing staff! One change in our school day will be our start time. Students are encouraged to go to morning recess daily from 8:05-8:20 a.m., at
which time the students will enter the building to start the new day. We have extended our day by five minutes to help compensate for the five 1:30 early dismissals throughout the school year for teacher common planning time. Students who walk to school can go directly to the playground when arriving at school and set their backpacks against the wall. Breakfast will be available at 8 a.m. starting in September. Our school district adopted a new math curriculum entitled Investigations. This curriculum is more inquiry-based than other curricula we have used in past years and requires deeper thinking from students. More information will be forthcoming about a Family Math Night in September to help parents better understand this math curriculum. We look forward to seeing all of the Worthing students and parents at Open House on Monday, August 18 from 5:30-6:15 p.m.

Transportation
T
he bus routes for the Lennox District will be the same as last year. The only changes on the routes will be the students that have moved into or out of the district. The drivers will notify you in August of any changes in pick up and drop off times. We ask that you have your students at the pick up point five minutes ahead of the scheduled time. The bus will only wait one minute before it will continue on its route. This is a must in order to keep our routes on schedule. Kermit Tesch’s route will again be
stopping in Tea. The location will be at the Kum & Go on 101 West 1st Street. Call Randy Arndt, Director of Transportation, at the Bus Garage 929-6470, or the Business Office 647-2203, ext. 4200 if you have any questions with the routes.

reetings from the band department! After last year’s success, the band program is looking forward to another exciting year of making music! The fifth graders will have an opportunity to begin learning an instrument at the start of the year. Band instructor Tyler Nettestad will be meeting with you in the first week of school to show and demonstrate the variety of instruments you have to choose from. At that time, a letter will be sent home to parents explaining the procedure to join band. Parents and students will then be invited to the instrument display night to purchase or rent an instrument from two reputable retailers, K&M Music and Schmitt Music. More details on specific dates and other information will be available the first week of school.
The high school students have already been busy working on music throughout the summer in preparation for marching band this fall. This year’s marching band show is entitled “Into The Joy Of Spring.” The show implies direction from the malaise of winter to the joy that comes with the onset of spring. Music includes works by Gustav Mahler and Beethoven. Band camp began Thursday, July 31st and goes to August 15. Students are reminded to wear tennis shoes, light colored clothing, sunscreen, and bring a large jug of water. Band camp culminates with the “Breakfast With The Band” preview show held on Saturday, Aug. 16 at 9 a.m. All parents, family, and friends are encouraged to join us for our first full show of the year! he school-operated lunch program is open to serve students breakfast and hot lunch at a reasonable price. Students may bring sack lunches. A la carte is available for high school students at an additional price. The schools in the Lennox School District are on a computer system (Wordware) for keeping records of lunch charges. All students in the family are under one account. However, each student has their own lunch ID number. This number is used as they go through the lunch line to purchase their meal. A photo of the student shows on the screen as their number is entered to assure the identity of the student. You can check your student’s lunch account and make payments at the school website–lennox.k12. sd.us–click on ‘Food Service’, then on ‘Check Lunch Account’. You must register (on the right side of the opening page) if you have not already done so, and create your own username and
password. If you need help with this, please call the school for assistance. The system is a prepayment program—not a credit program. It is the parent’s responsibility to maintain a positive balance in their child’s account. Emails or telephone calls are sent out daily for balances of $15 or less. Please check your account often to keep a positive balance at all times. If your balance reaches a negative $10, your students will no longer be allowed to charge meals until a deposit is made into your account! Upon request, a refund of account balances will be given if the family is leaving the district or if the graduating student is the last student in the family. Free and reduced price meals are available for families who need assistance. You can pick up a form at any of the school offices or print a form from the school website. If you qualified for free or reduced prices the previous year, your must re-apply again each school year BEFORE October 1st
or your account will switch back to full price. You can apply at any time during the school year if your income or family size changes. If you qualify for either status, only the main meal is at a free or reduced price. The school offers five food components (milk, fruits, vegetables, grains, meat/meat alternates). Students are allowed to decline
two of the five required food components, but must select at least ½ cup of either a fruit or vegetable. The school will make substitutions to the regular meal pattern for children whose disability restricts their diet. A ‘Special Diet Request Form ‘ must be filled out and signed by a physician. This form can be picked up at any of the school offices or printed from the school web site.

IMMUNIZATIONS The Lennox School District is responsible to comply with the South Dakota Department of Health in obtaining and verifying immunization records for all kindergarten and transfer students. Immunization records must be turned in to the school office by the first day of school. Minimum Immunizations Required for School Entry in South Dakota: 1. Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus vaccine– 4 or more doses with at least one dose on or after age 4. Children receiving six doses before age 4 do not require any additional doses for school requirements. The maximum a child should receive is six doses. 2. Polio vaccine – 4 or more doses with at least one dose on or after age 4. 3. Measles, Mumps, and Rubella Vaccine – Two doses of a measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine (MMR) are required or submit serological evidence of immunity. Minimum age for the first dose is 12 months. Administer the second dose routinely at age 4 through 6 years. 4. Varicella Vaccine – Kindergarten Students: Two doses of varicella vaccine are required. Minimum age for first dose is 12 months. Administer the second dose at age 4 through 6 years. History of disease is acceptable with parent signature. Transfer Students: One dose of varicella vaccine. The minimum age for the first dose is 12 months. History of disease is acceptable with parent/guardian signature. NOTE: Haemophilus Influenzae B, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, and Pneumococcal vaccines are recommended but not required. ennox High School student council has started planning for an active school year. Homecoming plans have begun with the chosen theme of “Fun for All: All for Fun” (a carnival theme). Dress up days and games will be part of the fun. Another popular fall project is Homeless Awareness in October. Money and non-perishable food items are gathered for The Exchange in Lennox. Other planned activities cover the areas of education, leadership, fundraising, and health & drug awareness. The student council is actively involved both at the region and state levels and was named a “South Dakota Outstanding Student Council” again in 2014. Spring will bring on the traditional Children’s Miracle Network fundraiser. This year’s student council will be led by senior Lane Smit with the help of his executive officers: Jordan Wittock. Keely Anderson, and Delane Hood. There are also two class representatives and the class president from each class who sit on the council. The student council advisor is Mary Stack.

General Information NOTIFICATION “The Lennox School District has on file a complete and updated Management Plan for dealing with asbestos containing building materials within the school district’s buildings. The Management Plan is available for viewing by interested parties, Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM through 4:00 PM or by appointment thereafter at the Administrative Office in the Public School Building. Copies will be available for $20.00 within five (5) days of a written request. From this date of notification, you will be informed at least annually about the availability of the Management Plan. The asbestos containing building materials are required to be kept under surveillance. The semi-annual surveillances will be conducted by (LEA designated person or a trained and accredited Asbestos Inspector from Asbestos Inspections of South Dakota). Prior to March 2011, the Public School Buildings will be reinspected by an accredited inspector to satisfy the required triennial inspection requirement per EPA 40 CFR 763, AHERA (Asbestos Emergency Response Act) Amendment.”
BIRTH CERTIFICATE LAW It is a South Dakota state law that schools have on file a certified copy of a birth certificate for each newly enrolled student. The law affects students who move into the district, as well as all incoming kindergartners. A certified copy of a birth record may be obtained from the
S.D. Dept. of health health, Vital records Office Office, S D Dept 523 E. Capitol, Pierre, SD 57501. Birth records may also be obtained from the S.D. County where a child was born (contact the county Register of Deeds Office). (Records for adopted children of children born out-of-wedlock are available only at the state office). Birth Records of children born out-of the state must be obtained from that state. The address of the appropriate office in any state may be obtained from the Vital Records Office, 605-7734961. To receive a certified copy of a birth record, send the child’s name, date of birth, and check in the amount of the current fee to the appropriate county or state office. The certified copy of the birth record must be presented on or before the date of enrollment in school.
EMERGENCY DISMISSAL GUIDELINES In the event of weather conditions or other emergency circumstances, the superintendent or his/her designee will have the authority to cancel school. An assessment of conditions shall be made be the superintendent of his/her designee as early as possible in the day. If school is canceled the public will be notified by the following: Radio Stations: KXRB • KELO • WNAX; TV Stations: KSFY • KELO • KDLT; School Reach: an announcement will be sent to parents via the School Reach program. If it is determined that it would be unsafe to permit children to leave the school they will remain at the school with faculty until conditions for
release are favorable or until parents personally pick up their children.
