Emotional Intelligence The New Literacy
A
search on google would reveal a wad of literature on the topic, emotional intelligence, but for the benefit of my lazy counterparts I will pen some of the pointers I feel are a pre-requisite in the workplace, lecture room and place of worship inasfar as emotional intelligence is concerened. In my review of literature based on emotional intelligence, the first encounter I had was a quote expressing how some active and not so active citizens view the concept of emotional intelligence:

Without a doubt I know managers who are not emotionally intelligent and they are not very effective … they are not good people managers … they are not particularly good at their jobs … and they are certainly not the excelling managers that I would be looking at as my role models. The people who are emotionally aware, in my experience, are the people who get the most from you … will help you to develop … and ultimately put you in a position to help other people. Who should be emotionally intelligent? Everyone: After realizing the ‘power of conversation’ and learning ‘how to convey and absorb feedback’ , there is no longer any exception as to who should be and who should not be emotionally competent. Long gone are the days where managers are the only class of individuals concerned with self improvement. Every citizen who actively participates in the economy needs to treat themselves as a brand and as such requires the skill of emotion, to become emotionally competent. This requires one to be emotionally intelligent or emotionally competent. • Knowing how you and others feel and what to do about it; • Knowing what feels good and what feels bad and how to get from bad to good and ; • Possessing emotional awareness, sensitivity

and the management skills that will help us to maximise our long-term happiness and survival. According to the UntitledChronicles, emotional intelligence is the pursuit of happiness, which encompasses being in touch with an inner peace, being literate of your goals in life and your purpose. Why fuss over emotional intelligence? The changes that have happened over the past decade has brought with them the need for new competencies. Advancements in technology and improvements in communication channels have led to more interaction than before. Goleman (1998), notes that the changing nature of work, increasing complexity, reshaping of jobs, rise in competition, globalization and rise in stress levels (yes stress levels are growing at a national and international level) and the recognition
of the need to maximize individual performance have led to an emphasis on emotion as a resource wherever they are. The way forward? Goleman (1998) concluded with a simple formula: IQ (Intelligence Quotient) + EQ (Emotional Quotient/Intelligence) = Success It becomes clear here, against all these scholars background, that emotional intelligence has become the new resource in improving productivity. Becoming assertive, empathetic, happy, emotionally aware helps over come challenges of confidence and bullying as well as being taken advantage of. Emotional intelligence makes it possible for one to enhance their problem solving abilities. How to attain emotional intelligence: The five step model will continue in the upcoming issue.

Parkview Green - FangCaoDi
A
t the end of the year 2000, the Hong Kong Parkview Group set out a brief for a project that was intended to challenge the conventions of large scale mixed-use commercial developments for a landmark building in the centre of Beijing. The response was a state-of-the-art, energy efficient and environmentally friendly design, formulated by the Hong Kong based architecture firm Integrated Design Associates (IDA) headed by Winston Shu. The entire development environment is micro-climatically tempered, using sustainable and natural means that correspond to the seasonal climate changes of Beijing, to provide an unprecedented level of thermal comfort and flexibility in spatial usage for the occupants of the property. The Parkview Green development comprises of four buildings enclosed by a single roof – a microclimatic envelope of steel, glass and ETFE air cushions designed to ‘breathe’ like a passive modulator to allow
natural air flows to ventilate, cool and retain heat. The outer skin effectively insulates the inner spaces from the worst effects of Beijing’s harsh climate, keeping the atrium warmer in winter and cooler in summer. The project’s absolute respect to ‘Rights of Light’ created an architectural form that becomes its most distinctive signature and the driving force behind the environmentally sustainable design. The building is shaped by the statutory need to maintain a minimum one hour unimpeded sun-light to every window on the northerly and westerly neighbours on winter-solstice day, which determines the eave and building heights, slope angle of the roof, and separation from the neighbours. Although loss of day-light can be compensated, the design team sought to adhere to the environmental requirements without compromise. The architectural form lends itself to natural air movement by heat stack effect. Fresh air is drawn in at the base of the

building and cooled or heated as required before being fed into the internal areas at floor level. The warm stale air rises naturally to the development’s apex where it is expelled via computer-controlled vents. For much of the year, natural ventilation alone is more than sufficient to maintain comfortable conditions within the offices and retail areas. Parkview Green sets a new benchmark for technologically advanced and energy-efficient buildings for commercial development, and is the first precertified LEED Platinum, major ‘Green’ mixed-used development in China. Sunita Nayab Gill
Laureate of the year 2013 winner Sunita Gill We have received great applications of projects from promising young achievers and most of them have already started. It was difficult to make a decision on who deserves to win, they all did. But, we still have to work within our capacity alongside Al- Amine Foundation to create a project that is sustainable and that can help as many people as our hands can reach. Sunita, started a school in a rural area in Pakistan to educate people and has also provided sewing machines for girls and women to work and provide money for the families and the school. Al- Amine Foundation and Independent Skies Magazine’s teams will do their best to grow this great initiative to a big independent organization that will take care of the education of many people in Pakistan. Sincerely, Almustafa M. Khalid Founder & Editor in Chief

Is it not sad? That our once shared passion Lies dead like ashes from a fire Traces of an ecstasy lived A moment in time Is it not sad, That our smiles have turned to frowns Permanent wrinkles From a bitter emotion As if we never smiled As if we never laughed Is it not sad, That we no longer look in the eye And fail to notice The object of our passion The source of our blaze In a dying hope to rekindle the flame A last kick, if worthy of anything, Of a dying love Is it not sad, That I can not be yours And you, mine That when I mention your name It makes friction in my trachea And so I confine myself To not calling you at all Even when my heart yearns for that Is it not sad, That poetry has become my therapy I can no longer reach you You are beyond where my words can reach Where my will takes me You are just there I am just here And always apart Is it not strange, That we are now like strangers And perhaps, stranger than all Is that I still love you.
