Inquérito da Arquitectura do Porto

“At the beginning, architectural forms were the result of the conditions imposed on the material by its function and because of a specific state of mind of the one who acts upon the same material.” Fernando Távora

Setting From 1955 to 1961 teams of Portuguese architects, including Fernando Távora, set out to document the vernacular architectures of Portugal in an attempt to both learn from history, as well as to shift the architectural discourse in Portugal. The result of this study was the publication of the highly influential three volume set entitled, “Architectura Popular em Portugal”, known simply as the “Inquérito”. Our workshop set out to renew the principles of the Inquérito in the context of Porto by carrying out a survey of buildings in the city across all eras in an effort to explore notions of continuity, place and building culture and perhaps to shift the architectural discourse. As Porto is a distinctly material city whose atmosphere arises from a rich indigenous building culture, our focus was not form, use or beauty but construction. Students investigated the making and character of the city through the lens of eleven buildings, from the 11th century to the 21st , creating our own small tectonic Inquérito. This became our foundation for making contemporary architecture of and for the city. Students then designed a small two room garden pavilion for architectural reviews in the garden next Álvaro Siza´s Carlos Ramos Pavilion at the FAUP attempting to find, “a dialogue (...) asserting similarities and continuity more than cultivating differences and rupture” (Fernando Távora).
