Time to Polo

Modern version of polo originated in the East Indian state of Manipur. The Silchar Polo Club was founded in 1859 by British military officers and tea planters, after Lieutenant Joe Sherer saw the locals playing the sport and said, “We must learn the game!”

The Silchar Polo Club was founded in 1859 by British military officers and tea planters, after Lieutenant Joe Sherer saw the locals playing the sport and said, “We must learn the game!” The British are credited with spreading polo worldwide in the late 19th century and the early 20th century at the height of its empire. Today the sport is most popular in England, Argentina and the United States.
