Modern version of polo originated in the East Indian state of Manipur. The Silchar Polo Club was founded in 1859 by British military officers and tea planters, after Lieutenant Joe Sherer saw the locals playing the sport and said, “We must learn the game!”

Today the sport is most popular in England, Argentina and the United States.
