Fastest to perform all Bharatanatyam hasta mudras in reverse order By Sanjana Bhowmick
The record for being the fastest to perform all Bharatanatyam hasta mudras in reverse order was set by Nithya Prakasam of Bengaluru. She performed all 62 mudras namely, Dasavatharahasta, Asamyuktha hasta and Samyuktha hasta in reverse order (mirror image way) in just 36 seconds and 27 milliseconds. ithya Prakasam is a classical, Bollywood dancer and a member of the international dance council, UNESCO. She started learning Bharatanatyam from the age of 5 years under the guidance of her Guru Smt. Latha Ramanathan. Nithya trained under her for 12 years and performed in various district, state-level performances, and competitions during her school and college days. Currently residing in the USA, Nithya
teaches Bharatnatyam to the kids. Though a student of Homoeopathic medicine, it is her passion for art that made her pursue and focus on dance. It took around six months of practice for Nithya, to achieve the record in the least possible time. Talking about her inspiration, she says, “During pandemic and lockdown, while at home I wanted
to try something different. I tried doing the mudras in mirror image technique to teach one of my young students. I noticed that she grasped it quickly. And this is when I practised and attempted for the record.” It was not an easy task to do in the reverse order and after months of practise and her family’s support, she finally could achieve the record. For her next record, she would attempt to do the maximum number of jumps in a minute
in the Muzhumandi position (full-sitting posture in Bharatanatyam). Sharing some tips for the future record-holders, Nithya says, “Plan the record date and give enough time to practice. Use the mirror as a tool while practicing, as it helps to record the image of mudras in the mind. Be confident and use a timer while practicing to achieve the record in the least possible time.”
