Sustainable Electric Vehicle Drive for a Sustainable India Last year electric transportation major Warren Buffet-backed BYD started a new chapter in it’s over a decade-long story in India. After successfully leading the way for zero-emission electric public carriers, BYD launched its globally-validated premium electric MPV, e6 in India. On World Environment Day, BYD together with its charging partner ChargeZone and Times Auto wanted to show how a zero-emission car fits into the current environment in India. The plan was to drive from Mumbai to Delhi in a BYD e6 premium MPV in one single shot. To prove sustainability the car

was required to get off the highways, which also meant taking on the challenge of finding charging stations that could keep the car going and on schedule. And through this journey, it was also to check, how practical the electric car experience was given the existing infrastructure. The attempt also created a record for the maximum distance covered in an electric car by a duo in a single journey. The record was set by Aashish Bhardwaj along with Girish Karkera covering a distance of 2203 km. The duo started on May 31, 2022, from Mumbai, and reached New Delhi on June 4, 2022.

Aashish is a business consultant and travel enthusiast with vast experience in the automobile industry in the marketing and product roles. He has worked with companies like Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Fiat, and Nissan in the past. On the other hand, Girish is a seasoned automotive journalist with almost two decades of editorial experience having worked with reputed publications like Indian Express, Autocar India, and BBC TopGear India. Currently, he is the Consulting Editor of Times Auto. The drive was flagged off, from Landmark BYD in Andheri (W) Mumbai, by Sanjay Gopalakrishnan, Senior Vice-President, Electric Passenger Vehicle Business, BYD India, Shivani Chaudhary, Head PR & Marketing; alongside Sanit Patel, Board Observer & Advisor for Marketing and Strategic Growth, ChargeZone, and Neerav Shah, CEO of Landmark BYD, Mumbai. “After the flag-off, our drive first took us across the Gujarat border towards Vansda National Park. Spread over 24 square kilometers next to the Ambika River, this protected area plays a substantially big part in maintaining the ecological balance in this part of the Sahyadri range. With a night halt at Surat and an overnight charge, the next day we headed out to one of

2

the oldest living things in India, a 950-year-old Baobab tree in Ganpatpura on the outskirts of Vadodara. The night stop was Mehsana, not a busy thoroughfare, still, we found two quick chargers in the town,” said Aashish. Night driving on the super-smooth Mehsana-Udaipur stretch was a surreal experience. They were able to clock the longest daily running of 700+ km. From Udaipur to Jaipur and onward to Delhi, the drive was mostly restricted to the highway. They finally reached BYD’s upcoming showroom in Okhla, New Delhi, where company officials flagged the car after 5 days and 2203 km on the trip meter. While the drive was to talk about sustainability, the distance covered in this single journey meant they had made it to the India Book of Records. “We envisaged the electric drive with a motive of creating awareness on sustainability and EV adoption under the theme - A Sustainable Drive for a Sustainable India. We are proud to highlight that our premium eMPV has saved over 400kg of carbon emissions on this trip alone,” said Sanjay Gopalkrishnan after accepting the certificate from India Book of Records.

Disaster management training via student theatricals Joint United Action for Resilience in Emergencies or JUARE, a week-long disaster management programme, was organized by Kullu district administration to manage risks and vulnerability of various calamities. However, JUARE made it to India and Asia Books of Records when students of all the blocks and divisions of Kullu’s government schools displayed theatrical performances on mitigation of effects of natural disasters to sensitise the public. The record was set in simultaneity at 206 locations of the Kullu district in Himachal Pradesh by school students on the occasion of World Environment Day on June 5, 2022 - apart from 14 places in six other districts as well, including Mandi, Bilaspur, Chamba, Una, Sirmaur, and Hamirpur.

The district administration had set the target of training 25,000 people simultaneously by staging a play together for its entry in the Asia and India Book of Records. However, the data collected revealed that 61,498 persons participated in the event. Thus, the record for maximum participation in a communitybased disaster risk management training on a single day was set by the office of District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Kullu, a mountain district in Himachal Pradesh. As per the record, Disaster Risk Reduction training was imparted at the mass level at 219 different locations, by school students through theatrical performances and community

hazard and resources map displays, before an audience of 235 gram panchayats and 6 urban local bodies, at 206 locations across Kullu district. Education Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Govind Singh Thakur was the chief guest and Kamal Kishore, Member Secretary, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), was the special guest at the event held at Dev Sadan. The minister awarded prizes to various schools and panchayats under the JUARE programme. The NCC cadets staged the JUARE play on the occasion. According to Prashant Singh, Coordinator (Training and Capacity Building), DDMA, “the possibility of disaster cannot be avoided in the hill areas but due to proper knowledge of disaster management, the loss of life and property can be minimised. The JUARE programme, started as a campaign in Kullu district, is an important initiative based on community participation with the aim of making the public aware of the disaster and to train them for the rescue and relief arrangements at the time of disaster.” It is worth mentioning here that NDMA Chairman, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, had provided 10-point guidelines related to disaster management and JUARE covers most of these points. Efforts are afoot to promote this programme in other parts of the country as well. Kullu officiating District Magistrate Prashant Sirkek said, “It was the first instance of such a large number of people being trained simultaneously. JUARE is a unique initiative of DDMA, Kullu, to spread awareness to deal with various types of

4

India Book of Records | August 2022

calamities and avoid loss when disaster strikes. Its objective was also to create a task force in the area, consisting of local people, including women and children.” The public training programme in disaster management is very important in the hill districts because providing quick help is not practically possible in the mountains. Reaching immediately to the affected rural areas becomes difficult due to the tough terrains. In such a situation, local people are the first to carry out the rescue work, even before the disaster management or medical teams arrive. Kullu district is spread over 6,000 square kilometers area and the population of the district is around 5 lakh. Only 10% of the population belongs to towns, while 90% of people live in rural areas, which are scattered in the hills. The region is prone to frequent landslides, earthquakes, and fire incidents.

Plogathon motivates Punekars in a mega cleaning drive The record for maximum participation in a plogathon across multiple locations was set by Vikram Kumar, Municipal Commissioner, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), Maharashtra. More than 1.5 lakh people participated in the citywide “Plogathon” collecting 34,477 kg of dry waste material, including 29,870 kg of lattice waste, 753 kg of e -waste, and 3,854 kg of other dry waste within two hours. The event established a record under the Asia Book of Records (ABR). The record-making attempt was supported by Ms. Pranati Shroff Munot and Ms. Ankita JP Shroff, Co-Founders of ‘Sustain and Save,’ a startup that came into being in 2020. A one-stop solution for sustainability, the startup focuses on integrating sustainability into day-to-day life. Both the founders are known to promote green products and services and create next-generation Future Changemakers, who believe in – ‘Be the change, not the problem’, to bring about an impact in the world.

The participants started the plogathon at 7 am on June 5, 2022, the World Environment Day, and collected plastic trash at Bhide Bridge and many other locations in Pune. With a motivation to enter the Asia Book of Records, alongwith other collaborations with different stakeholders, PMC Commissioner, Vikram Kumar and the entire team were able to host and conduct the ‘Pune Plogathon 2022’ at a grand level taking along the youth and various social and environmental organisations. Kunal Khemnar, Additional Commissioner, said on the occasion that the turnout at all the routes was more than expected. Many people joined with their family and friends in this initiative at the last moment without getting prior registration, therefore the actual number of participants increased more than what was initially expected. While the regular collection of garbage by the civic body is an uphill task in many areas, it is also up to the residents to keep

their vicinities clean. The plogathon brought citizens together for a common goal. At 7.30 in the morning when people on their morning walk saw the citizens plogging, they too got inspired and joined in. The plogathon covered 134 public roads, 45 parks, and more than 50 heritage sites. Many groups which carry out such cleanliness drives in their own areas regularly also joined in enthusiastically, with volunteers from Ganesh Mandals and representatives of other social groups and institutions. All instructions were provided by the PMC staff to the citizens at all locations. It was a common feeling that a lot of trash is created every day by hawkers, eateries, and other

commercial activities. Many trekking enthusiasts also joined the forest department to clear the hills of trash. The drive was widely conducted at Hanuman Hill, Mhatoba Hill, Vetal Hill, Mohmandwadi, Wanwadi, Warje, Hingane, Taljai, Sinhagad, Bavdhan and Ghoradeshwar. Rahul Patil, Deputy Conservator of Forest, Pune, who joined the citizens in the clean-up drive at Warje, said, “The response of citizens was overwhelming. Thousands of individuals participated in the clean-up drive across various identified locations, along with volunteers from different environmental NGOs and school students. More than 500 bags of dry waste had been collected from the area. “We will organise such clean-up drives every first Saturday of the month.”

22 Chartered Accountants in a single family The record for the maximum number of Chartered Accountant (CA) professionals in a family was set by CA Vallabhdas M Shah and his family of Mumbai, Maharashtra. All his four generations have a total of 22 Chartered Accountants. The two brothers were from the first generation in 1950, their sons and daughters, daughters-in-law, and sons-in-law were from the second and third generation respectively and now great grandson is from the fourth generation, who received the Chartered Accountancy degree in 2021. The achievement has got a place in the India Book of Records (IBR). Born in Kankanpur vIllage of Godhra district of Gujarat, CA Vallabhdas M Shah inspired all family members for generations to join the most esteemed profession of Chartered accountancy. He himself started his career in Tax & Accountancy practice in Kampala, Uganda, way back in 1934. After five years he returned to India and started practice in Ahmedabad. He then went on to become a Chartered Accountant in 1950 and established the firm with his elder brother, CA Chandulal M Shah. A man of principles, firm determination, and sharp Audit excellence, CA V M Shah spread his practice all across Gujarat and then moved to Mumbai for further expansion. Taking inspiration from CA V M Shah, the second-generation sons became Chartered Accountants, including CA Ashwin Shah, CA Pravin Shah, and CA Niranjan Shah. The legacy continued. In the third generation, there are 16 Chartered Accountants in the family, as the six sons, and two daughters went on to become Chartered Accountants. As if this was not enough and they welcomed CAs as their spouses.

CA Shruti Shah told the India Book of Records that the unique feature of the family is that all 22 Chartered Accountants are providing different services. While the first and second generations have been practicing Audit and Taxation, the third generation opted for different areas. In 2021, CA Shrujay Shah became a Chartered Accountant, who represents the fourth generation, and got an All India rank of 43. He also intends to join the practice in business structuring and Litigation Management Advisory. The list of the Chartered Accountants in this family goes like this: CA Dhinal Shah (Tax Litigation), CA Jayesh Shah (Management Consultancy), CA Chirag Shah (Business), CA Bhavesh Shah ( Investment Consultancy), CA Shreyas Shah (International Taxation), CA Anuj Shah (GST Litigation), CA Sheetal Shah (Retail Business Consultancy), CA Shruti Anup Shah ( international Estate Planning), CA Shruti Jayesh Shah (Systems Consultancy), CA Kinjal Shah (Finance Consultancy), CA Mansi Shah (Banking Services), CA Jasmine (Business Management), CA Dhrashtee (Internal Audit), CA Niyati (Forensic Accounting), CA Anup (Business restructuring), and CA Kailash ( Corporate Finance & Strategy). As a part of efforts to give back to the profession, three CAs went into the Council of Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (CICAI). CA Ashwin Shah and CA Dhinal Shah served as Central Council members, and CA Shruti Shah served for 9 years in the Regional Council and went on to become the lady chairperson of Western India Regional Council.

Teenager plays flute on maximum fort peaks A teenage student from Pune has set a most wonderous record for playing flute atop 25 Maratha Forts in a span of 46 days, which is not only an inspiring example for generation next but also a proud moment for the prestigious India Book of Records (IBR). This bright child, Amar Sutar is 16 years old and has just finished his class ten examination. The boy is full of patriotic spirit, and he has the ambition to become an IAS officer. Presently he is preparing for the IIT entrance exam and is well versed in archery and flute. Academically also he is a promising student.

10

India Book of Records | August 2022

Amar’s father, Digambar Sutar is a businessman, who owns a factory in Pune manufacturing industrial crane conveyors. He proudly says that one day his son told him that when the country was celebrating the 75th year of Independence (Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav), he should also do something special so that the occasion becomes memorable in his life. He started with the Shivneri Fort in Pune on April 10, 2022, and unfurled the national flag atop the fort. Since the coronation of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj has completed 348 years, so he also waved a saffron flag on one side. Sitting between

the two inspiring flags, Amar played the tune of the song ‘Saare Jahan Se Achha Hindustan Hamara’ on the flute with respect to the independence of the nation. Amar climbed one fort after another and finally, on May 26, 2022, concluded the campaign at Rajgarh Fort in Pune itself. Climbing the forts is not an easy task, it requires strength. In this way, the boy has also inspired the youth of his age to participate in the Fit India Movement. This campaign of the teenager, playing the flute atop many historical forts was rare, hence his name got a place in the pages of the India Book of Records. Even before the 348th Coronation Day of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was celebrated widely on June 6, 2022, Amar completed his ascent to 25 historical forts in Maharashtra. Through this initiative, he has greeted Shivaji Maharaj in a unique way. One thing is worth a special mention here, that he completed the attempt amid his 10th exam. Simultaneously, his practice of learning flute and archery also continued. The 25 forts in Amar’s list also included: Ajinkyatara Fort, Chavand Fort, Daulatmangal Fort, Dhangarh, Hanumantgarh, Hadsar Fort, Jivdhangarh, Korigarh, Morgiri Fort, Malhargarh, Manranjan Fort, Narayangarh, Naneghat Fort, Nimgiri Fort, Pemgiri Fort, Sajjangarh, Shrivardhan Fort, Sinhagad, Songadh, Tikona Fort, Tung Fort, and Visapur Fort.

Amar also got encouragement for this achievement from his mother, Ms. Sandhya Sutar. He was in 7th grade when he became interested in archery. For training in this sport, he joined the Swaraj Archery Academy, where he has been learning archery under the guidance of his trainer, Kunal. His trainer accompanied him in this endeavor to set the record. Amar has won several medals in archery at the state and national levels. He says that archery helps him concentrate, which also helps him in his studies.

Fastest Solo Golden Quadrilateral Car Drive

G D Vishnuraam, a 41-year-old fitness enthusiast, and a passionate cyclist -cum-motorist with the thirst to scale great heights in fitness. Vishnu has got another feather in his cap by getting into the India Book of Records (IBR) once again. The marathoner from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, has set a new record in completing the Fastest Solo Golden Quadrilateral Car Expedition. He already has several other records in his name for cycling and driving under the India Book of Records and Asia Book of Records.

12

India Book of Records | August 2022

The attempt for this new record was planned three months ago, as Vishnuraam had to prepare his mind and body and decode the car well in advance. He chose June 3 to start the expedition, as the date marked the 99th birth anniversary of former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Dr. Kalaignar Karunanidhi. He approached Karunanidhi’s grandson Udhayanidhi Stalin, MLA, who willingly accepted the invite and flagged off the car (a Toyota Fortuner) on June 3, 2022, at 10.40 am from Chennai. M A Subramanian, Health Minister of

Tamil Nadu, and Dayanidhi Maran, MP (Chennai Central) were also present on the occasion. Vishnuraam had packed some food items and water to save his time on the way. He intended to avoid sleep at least for the first 42 hours. On reaching Visakhapatnam at 8 pm, he found road blockage as uprooted trees had fallen on the road due to heavy rains in the region. Despite all odds, he entered Orissa and then reached Kolkata on June 4 at 5.30 am. Then he stopped at Durgapur for around 20 minutes to have a quick breakfast. Thereafter, his car was running on the Purvanchal Express, one of the finest highways in the country. By dinner time, he reached Lucknow. After staying for 30 minutes in the state capital of Uttar Pradesh, he left for Agra and then passed through Delhi at 5 am. Reaching Jaipur at 9 am, he parked the car in front of Hawa Mahal, to click a few memorable pics, and drove towards Mumbai. Reached there at 3 o’clock, then the car entered Pune. After a few minutes’ stop, he resumed the journey towards Karnataka. After crossing Dharwad, Hubli, and Bangalore, the car entered Tamil Nadu. He reached back Chennai at 9 pm on June 6, 2022. Mission

accomplished and the record was made! The entire distance of 5,860 km took 82 hours and 20 minutes only. Meanwhile, the stopovers lasted for about 6 hours, which included stopping at the petrol pumps, traffic jams, toll plaza, dhabas, nature calls, and two hours of sleep. On the way, the car passed through 92 toll plazas, 12 states, and one Union Territory. The states included Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Orissa, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. Vishnuraam said, “I will remember this record more for mental strength than physical. I needed to remain mentally strong because I had to concentrate on the road despite the lack of sleep or rest. I had planned to complete the journey in 99 hours, although, it took much less time. Overall, this record was one of the toughest challenges I have ever faced in my life. I am grateful to my wife Swati and daughter Raksha for their love and care; and also, to the India Book of Records and Asia Book of Records for giving me recognition.” India Book of Records | August 2022

Largest Geotechnical soil testing lab The record for building the largest geotechnical testing laboratory was set by L&T Geo Structure of Surat, Gujarat, covering an area of 5,000 sq mt at Anthroli, near Surat. The lab is designed and equipped to conduct 3,500 tests a day, manned by qualified technicians, wherein a total of 1,00,000 soil and rock samples are to be annually tested, as per the documents submitted to the India Book of Records. The laboratory is equipped with state of art automatic and digital testing equipment with accuracies meeting the codal provisions. The facility houses 140 automatic triaxial and 350 automatic consolidation equipment, which is by far the highest installed capacity of engineering property equipment in India. The laboratory is designed and equipped to cater to index property testing of 400 samples per day and engineering property testing of 25 samples per day. India Book of Records was told that there are around 180 specially trained technicians employed at the facility for conducting and recording the testing details. The test data evaluation, interpretation, and reports are prepared by 20 qualified and experienced geotechnical engineers to ensure the correctness, accuracy, and reliability of the test results. In total, the C4 package requires laboratory testing of around 1 Lakh soil/ rock samples over a period of 12 months. All the 1 Lakh soil samples must be tested for their index properties like moisture content, Atterberg’s limits, grain size analysis, free swell index, and specific gravity tests, and around 30000 specimens have to be tested for their engineering properties like triaxial and consolidation. The engineering property testing procedures are complex and time-consuming, requiring highly skilled trained technicians to conduct

14

India Book of Records | August 2022

the tests and qualified geotechnical engineers to interpret the test results. The laboratory is run in a factory mode with most of the activities mechanized and standardized to ensure optimum usage of man-hours and reduction in human errors. The HSR laboratory facility is India’s largest and arguably Asia’s largest geotechnical testing facility in terms of testing volume. It will be a global benchmark in geotechnical testing and will auger L&T’s commitment to delivering India’s first bullet train project on an agreed schedule. Meanwhile, the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) is organizing training programmes for civil engineering students at the Geotechnical investigation lab. During the training, students are familiarized with instruments being used for various geotechnical investigations. “The Ahmedabad-Mumbai bullet train project has also given a boost to the local geotechnical investigation setup with labs upgrading their old equipment. Around 15 laboratories at Valsad, Surat, Vadodara, Anand, and Ahmedabad have upgraded their infrastructure to comply with the international standards required for the project. Fully automatic and semi-automatic ground testing machines have been deployed at project sites,” said a spokesperson. India is confident of achieving the target of running the country’s first bullet train by 2026 or at least doing a trial run. The deadline of the 508-km project was initially December 2023, but due to delays in land acquisition and the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, the date for the project kept on extending. The Geotech lab is playing a crucial role in this project.

100 duet singers perform for 10 hours The Kainya Charitable Trust, a social organization in Trichy, Tamil Nadu, which provides social, educational, and legal support to women and girls, created history through a public program of group singing marathon. The organization has set a record for the maximum number of duet singers performing together on stage in a regional language. The organization has got its name included in the India Book of Records. This unique program was held at Rajeshwari Hall, Trichy on June 11, 2022. It saw 100 duet singers of different age groups come on stage and set an amazing national record by presenting 100 Tamil film songs one after the other for 10 hours without any break. 100 male and 100 female singers participated in this unique group music activity and presented a total of 100 Tamil duets. The program went on nonstop for 10 hours. A pair sang at a time on the stage, while the other participants relaxed in a designated area. None of them were allowed to venture out during the show. Refreshments were arranged for them at the venue itself. All the singers who set the record were from an online community that is present on the ‘Smule Singing’ app, an American app based on the karaoke system, which contains the tunes of millions of songs. The singers can play any song of their choice and sing along to the recorded tune. This means the Smule system doesn’t require a traditional orchestra. Organizer Adv S Akilandeswari told IBR e-magazine that none of the participants of the event is a professional singer. They come

from different cultural backgrounds and they belonged to the age groups between 20 to 60 years. “We all gathered on the basis of our common interest in music and singing. I believe that music helps in reducing the stress of our everyday life”, she added. Kainya Charitable Trust was established on July 12, 2021, by Advocate S Akilandeswari. She is the founding president of the organization. Its trustees include M Senthil Kumar, Mohamed Rafi, G Selvaraj, Vasanth Kumar, Sarvan, and Jessy Suresh. The mission of the organization is to empower women in every possible way and help them become socially independent. The organization aims at providing a solution to every problem of women up to 60 years of age. Akilandeswari said, “We have a panel of advocates who help women in legal issues. Our vision is that every girl child should get an education. We create employment opportunities for women through a training program. We are spreading awareness about the POCSO Act (Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act, 2012) in different schools from time to time. It helps in reducing the crime levels in society.” The participating duet singers were selected from Smule Meets that were conducted all across Tamil Nadu. The youth volunteers, most of whom were law college students, contributed greatly to the smooth conduct of the programme. The organisers thanked the team of the India Book of Records for their support and constant encouragement. India Book of Records | August 2022

Doctors pledging to Fight Dehydration The most severe threat posed by diarrhoea is dehydration. During a diarrhoeal episode, water and electrolytes (sodium, chloride, potassium and bicarbonate) are lost through liquid stools, vomit, sweat, urine and breathing. Dehydration occurs when these losses are not replaced. As per WHO, Diarrhoea is defined as the passage of three or more loose or liquid stools per day (or more frequent passage than is normal for the individual). Diarrhoea is usually a symptom of an infection in the gastrointestinal tract, which can be caused by a variety of viral, bacterial, and parasitic organisms. Infection is spread through contamination of drinking water or food, or from person to person as a result of poor hygiene. The record for the Maximum Doctors Pledge to Fight Against Dehydration due to Diarrhoea was set by FDC Electral, Mumbai, Maharashtra. The online awareness campaign commenced on July 26, 2021, and ended on July 31, 2021, and witnessed a total participation of 26,390 doctors, making its way to the pages of the India Book of Records. Contaminated food and water, together with unhygienic eating habits, account for the continuing high prevalence of acute diarrhoea in adults. In industrialized countries, the incidence of acute diarrhoea is estimated to average 0.5 to 2 episodes per person per year, and the corresponding figure could be much higher in developing and underdeveloped countries. Saish Kamble, Group Product Manager, FDC Electral, told the India Book of Records that the human body is made up largely of water, so you need the right balance of fluids in your system for good health. Along with the fluids, the body also

16

India Book of Records | August 2022

needs electrolytes, which are salts normally found in blood, other fluids, and cells. That is why in the absence of medical treatment, a person suffering from dehydration is advised to drink water mixed with salt and sugar. “To make people aware of the harmful effects of dehydration, FDC Electral, Mumbai conducted an online campaign, involving 26,390 medical practitioners across the country, pledging to fight against dehydration caused by Diarrhoea. The exercise was such a massive one that it made a new record and the company made its way to the India Book of Records,” said Kamble. It is estimated that more than one lakh children under the age of five years die of Diarrhoea in the country every year. India tops the charts of the countries recording deaths of under-5 children caused by different forms of the Diarrhoeal disease, including Cholera, as per UNICEF reports. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), this mortality rate can be brought down to less than one per cent by simple interventions like effective and timely case management. Mild and moderate cases can successfully be treated with Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS). It can successfully treat 80% of Cholera patients, both children and adults. Since the disease is caused by consuming contaminated food or water, one must ensure that the water used to prepare the solution is completely pure and safe. The WHO recommends that ORS be made using boiled water. Water which is not chlorinated or boiled contains pathogens which could contaminate the solution making it ineffective.

World’s largest Kidney Tumor removed The record for removing the heaviest kidney tumor of a kid by surgery was set by a 38 years old, Dr. Nitin Singhal of Ahmedabad, Gujarat, along with his team. They surgically removed a large Wilms tumor (measuring 3.1 kg, from the left kidney of a 3-year-old girl patient at Apollo Hospital CBCC Cancer Care, Gandhinagar, Gujarat on March 20, 2021. The surgery has got a place in the India Book of Records (IBR). According to Dr. Nitin Singhal, “The tumor had been discovered to be the largest tumor resected in this age group in the world to the best of our knowledge (3.1 kg of size 26 x 27 x 8 cm). The child’s weight was 14kg, hence tumor mass weight formed 22% of total body weight. Wilms tumor is a rare kidney cancer that primarily affects children. Also known as Nephroblastoma, it’s the most common cancer of the kidney in children.” Wilms tumor most often affects children aged below 5 years. While the incidence of horseshoe kidney is about 1 in 500 cases, the presence of Wilms tumor with a horseshoe kidney is unusual. The occurrence of a Wilms tumor in a horseshoe kidney is estimated to be less than 1% of all Wilms tumors. Ms. Hemali Shah from Apollo Hospitals told the India Book of Records that when the parents of a 3-year-old girl visited the Apollo Hospital CBCC Cancer Care, Gandhinagar, Gujarat for a checkup, they had no idea what they were about to discover. They had started noticing the protruding belly of their daughter and when it kept increasing over 2-3 weeks, they decided to seek doctors’ opinion. Pediatrician Dr. Pushkar Shrivastav, after

initial evaluation, referred the case to Pediatric Oncologist, Dr. Hemant Menghani. Upon investigation, Dr. Menghani concluded that the child suffered from a rare condition in which a huge mass was arising from the kidney. The child was suffering from Wilms Tumor. Moreover, the child possessed Horseshoe Kidney (both side kidneys attached to each other at one end). The tumor was so huge occupying almost the whole abdominal cavity and pushing into the diaphragm thus causing the child severe breathing difficulty. The case was discussed in the multidisciplinary tumor board. Under normal circumstances for such a huge mass generally, a biopsy is followed by chemotherapy in the course of treatment. However, there were several risks with this approach. Owing to the deteriorating health of the child and the race against time, the doctors decided to take prompt action. The decision was to perform emergency surgery. The challenging surgery was performed by Dr. Nitin Singhal, Surgical Oncologist, and a team, including Dr. Ankit Chauhan, Anesthetist, and Dr. Kirti Prajapati, Pediatric Surgeon. The surgery was a herculean task that took almost four hours to accomplish. It went uneventful and the additional challenges for faster recovery in the postoperative course were managed well by the team, including Dr. Arpan Chaudhary, Assistant Surgeon and the nursing team. The child was discharged on the fifth day after receiving the first dose of chemotherapy.

Plog Hiking for clean hills at Mandi district A local community-based Plog hiking held for the first time in the Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh has been included in the India Book of Records (IBR). People participated in this funfilled race with enthusiasm and made the Shikari Devi Mountain, under the Seraj development block, garbage-free. In this 13-km run, a total of 345 participants collected 1,179 kg of dry garbage, including thousands of empty glass and plastic bottles. Held under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Movement) of the Government of India, the plog-hiking event was jointly organized by Himachal Pradesh Rural Development Department, District Administration and the Janjehli Tourism Festival Committee. Retired Captain Shyam Singh Negi flagged off this race with a purpose from Kanganidhar, which concluded at Bhulah while passing through Mata Shikari Devi temple complex on the hills. The participants in the race included 175 males and 170 females. During the cleanliness run, they filled the garbage spread on the hill in the bags provided by the local administration. Surprisingly more than 5,000 empty liquor bottles were also recovered from the trek. Two scales were installed on the venue to weigh the collected trash. Gopichand Pathak, Block Development Officer of Seraj Vikas Khand, told the India Book of Records that such an event was held for the first time in this area. It was planned as a part of the 4th Janjehli Tourism Festival. In this, the local Himachali people participated and made the temple complex and the path completely garbage free. No one had expected that such a huge amount of trash would come out on the trek to the hill. As per the plan, 200 participants were to take part in a 10-

km run in this collective attempt to set the record. However, females also showed enthusiasm, and eventually, the number of participants nearly doubled. Ms. Kiranjit Kaur, Adjudicator, India Book of Records was present on the occasion. Later the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Jai Ram Thakur honored Paras Agrawal, Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Thunag by handing over a certificate and medal received from the India Book of Records. Gopichand Pathak, the convener of First Seraj Plog Hiking, says that the main objective of the activity was to create awareness about cleanliness among the locals. The initiative will also prove to be effective in reducing drug addiction among youth. Such activities also help in promoting local tourism. Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur also directed the officials to continue such activities. Plogging is simply ‘picking up empty plastic bottles and wrappers etc. scattered on the way while jogging and putting the trash into a garbage bin’. This type of cleaning can achieve both environmental as well fitness goals. He informed that Shikari Devi temple is about 18 Km from Janjehli and connected by a jeepable forest road. It is situated at an altitude of 3359 Mtr. Thick forests on the way to Shikari peak are amazing. Being the highest peak in the Mandi district it is also called the Crown of Mandi. Vast green pastures, captivating sunrise, and sunset, and panoramic views of snow ranges make this place a favorite for nature lovers. On the Shikari peak, there is a roofless temple of Shikari Devi, the Goddess of hunters, and this temple is said to be established by Pandavas.

Cover Story The records are proof of the excellent work that Maha Metro has executed over the period of time. It is a major milestone for Maha Metro which has already bagged a good number of awards right since its inception. Initially, the alignment of Highway Flyover and Metro Rail was on the same existing highway on Wardha Road, with independent piers at alternating locations proposed on the median. This was later reviewed and decided to integrate Highway Flyover and Metro Rail to form a Double Decker Viaduct. Double Decker Viaduct carries Highway Flyover at the first level and Metro Rail at the second level making it a three-tier transportation system with the existing highway at ground level. This helped in avoiding additional land acquisition thus saving land cost and reducing construction time and project cost.

process, concept, design, and execution of these stations were no less than a challenge, which was also reflected in Nitin Gadkari’s tweets. It is worth mentioning here that this is not the first time when Maha Metro Nagpur has been chosen for record by the India Book of Records. In March 2017, Maha Metro was also awarded for Largest Human Chain organized for promoting `Safety at Work’. The participants in the human chain included laborers, supervisors, and managers in uniform. Right since its inception, Maha Metro has bagged a number of awards at multiple levels and platforms.

Articles of Indian Constitution fluently recited by a child Can one expect a child to recite the various articles of the Indian Constitution, a subject area that may be a bit confusing for even older students to understand? But a girl below the age of 11 years from Nizamabad district of Telangana state not only has the basic knowledge of the Constitution, but she has also made a national record in this matter under the Asia Book of Records. This girl child, Chitimilla Sahasra, a Class VI student at Residency School, Nizamabad has already made a similar record with India Book of Records. Sahasra has made a record of reciting maximum articles of the Indian Constitution. Sahasra’s age was 10 years 11 months 16 days at the time of setting this record on June 16, 2022. She surprised everyone by reciting more than 40 articles of the Indian Constitution in just 2 minutes and 27 seconds at such a young age. Previously also, this girl has also set another record under the India Book of Records in 2019. She then was studying in Class IV and set a record for speedily reciting 100 abbreviations of the terminology related to the Indian banking and economy sector. For example, RBI (Reserve Bank of India), SBI (State Bank of India), etc. Sahasra’s father, Dr. Santosh Kumar, MBBS, MD (General Medicine), is a physician by profession and runs his own hospital (Gayatri Hospital) in Nizamabad. Her mother, Dr. Archana is a pediatrician, and she also works at the same hospital. Both the parents spend almost the entire day in their hospital and are able to give very little time to their daughters. Their younger daughter, Reya is just

3 years old and studies in the nursery class. Grandparents are responsible for taking care of both the children during the day. Children meet their father properly on Sundays only. Dr. Santosh explains that Sahasra is very much interested in doing unique things. Basically, she wants to be one step ahead of the other kids. Apart from regular subjects, she is more interested in studying science, social science, and general knowledge books. As a parent, the first thing I did was to identify her area of interest. Gradually I started teaching and training her and helped her understand various concepts. Basically, I feel that as parents we have to go down to the level of the children and then teach them. Then maybe we can explain things better to them. Seeing the preoccupation of the doctor parents, Sahasra has declared that after growing up she would like to become a scientist, not a doctor. The father has installed a whiteboard in her room, on which Sahasra writes the questions, and when he returns home late at night, he writes the answer to that question on the same board. The work of explaining the Articles of the Constitution in simple language was also done through the same board, explaining one Article a day. A 20-minute conversation between father and daughter takes place while dropping her to the school bus in the morning. Most of the learning takes place in those moments. Now he has made it a rule to give two hours to Sahasra on the first three Sundays of every month. Children are always inspired by their parents. Asia Book of Records is proud to recognise the efforts of the little one.

Manakula Vinayagar Institute of Technology in association with Paramaathmam Traditional Indian Fitness and Martial Arts Academy organized Karlakattai Yoga on International Yoga Day (June 21, 2022). The allwomen group consisting of 52 participants of different age groups, performed the yoga, completing 1371 rounds for 30 minutes and 44 seconds at MIT Auditorium, Puducherry. Thus, a record for the Longest Warrior Karlakattai Yoga Performed by a Group of Women was set by Manakula Vinayagar Institute of Technology, Madagadipet, Puducherry, under the guidance of the India Book of Records team. Initially, 80 students were selected, and finally, 52 of them were found eligible for the training. Vijaya Prasath, founder and master trainer of Paramaathmam Traditional Indian Fitness and Martial Arts Academy, conducted the training programme for 15 days before the record-making attempt was made. Initially, there was some hesitation among the participants, as they thought that this was an exercise that only men could do and that it was meant for athletes, and wrestlers only. On the first day of the training session, the participants realized that their body was weak. They took the

exercise gently and gradually increased it day by day. On the third day, they felt a little better. In just one week of training, pain in the legs gradually subsided and there was a positive change in their physical condition. In the remaining 8 days, the participants formed a habit of doing 500, 800, and 1000 rounds in half an hour. Some even in their old age completed their rounds with enthusiasm. And on International Yoga Day, after completing 1371 rounds in half an hour, the students were full of joy. A 10-yearold girl also took part in this record-making attempt with enthusiasm. Vijaya Prasath, who has the distinction of performing 1280 rotations of Thoppa Karlai in half an hour, has been conducting yoga traditional art, yoga warrior, yoga kriya, yoga, silambam, and self-defense martial arts for women for the past 14 years. According to him, there are a total of five types of rotations and 64 types of rounds in Karalakattai, like hand karla, step karla, puja karla, belly karla, and wrestling karla. Physical health gets better by using wood of medicinal properties. Body, mind and soul are all strengthened by practicing curling. He says that “if women are healthy, then the family and eventually the society will also be better.” The event introduced this yoga form to women and made them aware. He said, “We are deeply grateful to the India Books of Records for allowing such a feat and creating awareness around the event. We are also grateful to Dr. S. Malarkkan, Principal of Manakula Vinayagar Institute of Technology for his interest and cooperation in conducting the programme smoothly.” It is worth mentioning here that Karalakattai is an ancient martial art, in which usually men were involved. A wooden weapon was used for fighting. In Karalakattai, ‘Karalan’ term is used for a man who is very strong. When he goes to war, he grabs nearby trees and easily knocks down the enemy. Before the British period, this art was practiced by all. During the time of the British, the design of the Karlakattai was changed to the ‘Club Bell’ instead of the curl and then the dumbbell came into being. The dumbbell is an important part of gym equipment today.

Largest Painting at the Zoo’s Monkey House The record for making the largest wall painting of wildlife has been set by Ms. Sapna Kathafar of Indore, Madhya Pradesh, and her associates from the Kalastambh organisation. They created drawings of endangered and extinct animals depicting forest life. A large enclosure for monkeys has been set up in the Indore Zoo, where 17 artists worked for a total of 25 hours to create an attractive painting under the guidance of Ms. Sapna. The size of this huge painting, completed on June 23, 2022, is 4300 square feet. For this unique achievement, the team got recognition from the India Book of Records. A new and improved enclosure has been constructed for the monkeys at the Kamala Nehru Prani Sangrahalay (Indore Zoo),

so that different species of monkeys can live and roam freely in a natural and open environment. At present, the cage in which the seven red-faced monkeys were kept was 120 square feet in size, which was a little uncomfortable for the animals. The new enclosure has many structures like trees, high platforms, swings, water bodies, rings, commando nets, and tree trunks. To

make its walls alive and attractive, Dr. Uttam Yadav, Director, Indore Zoo invited Kalastambh members. Ms. Sapna told the India Book of Records that some time back her organization had conducted a live painting competition at the zoo. The zoo officials were impressed to see their work. Then they talked about the new enclosure and discussed the idea of depicting the extinct species of apes on the wall of the monkey house. Arrangements for colors and refreshments were made by the zoo management. The team of Kalastambh started the painting work on May 5 and this process of painting for a few hours every day continued for a few days. With the completion of the painting, a record was also set for the largest painting depicting wildlife on the wall. This was

one of the most wonderful aspects of the entire project. By organizing a special program for this achievement, Dr. Uttam Yadav, Director, Zoo honored all the artists. International artist Rajesh Hirve, filmmaker Ranjit Bhiya, zoo official Nihar Parulekar, and mimicry artist Deepak Neema were also present on the occasion. Engineer develops shoes for women’s safety The record for making an innovative women’s safety shoe device was set by Syed Mosharaf Hossain of Bardhhaman, West Bengal who designed an innovative safety shoe device for the protection of women, which comprises 7 features including SMS sending, GPS tracker, GSM module, electric shock, pendant, and high-frequency alarm. The India Book of Records has recognized his unique record. Syed Mosharaf Hossain, a resident of Tilabani Village, in the Faridpur block of the Durgapur district, recently developed a unique product that is expected to help in the safety of women. Through TV, newspapers, and social media, we always come

32

India Book of Records | August 2022

across incidents that make us question the safety of women in the country. Having two elder sisters, Syed always wanted to find out a way to help in reducing the rate of crime against

women and innovate something that will make them feel safe. He was doing a lot of research regarding the same. In the year 2018, when Syed was a student of Gobindapur Sephali Memorial Polytechnic College, in Purba Bardhaman, he came to know about various women’s safety applications that were launched at that time, including sprays, safety apps, etc. But, there were some negative sides to the android application that was launched earlier. First of all, most women in rural areas do not have smartphones. And another point is that the possibility of activating the application in time of emergency is very low. Also, most of the time the attacker snatches the bags and phones or ties the hands of the victim, which leaves no chance of activating any such safety features. This made him think of something that will not require hands to activate. So, after two years of extensive research and brainstorming, he

developed an innovative pair of footwear, which might prevent a woman from being assaulted. His professors, Ramprashad Chatterjee, Krishnendu Karmakar, and Subhendu Chakraborty helped him throughout his journey to develop the new technology. So, what is the specialty of this pair of shoes? According to Syed, “A chip is installed in the shoe, which will be able to send messages up to 5 preset devices with the woman’s location within 30 seconds. The in-built GPS will keep on tracking the location, even if she has moved to a different location. The system can be activated with the feet by touching the two shoes together. Hence, it can be more useful in the moment of crisis.” Not only the shoes, but he has also designed a safety pendant that can perform the same function as the safety shoes. So that by pressing a button on the pendant the shoe device can be activated to get help. He has yet to get the patent for the new device. However, he feels grateful to the India Book of Records for recognizing his talent and innovation. Syed is trying to get support from the government departments and agencies to further develop the idea.

Maximum participation in Cycle Rally The Mumbai Police in Maharashtra has received recognition from the India Book of Records and Asia Book of Records for the participation of a maximum number of people in a cycle rally. A total number of 5,225 people cycled 95.65 kilometers for four hours, from 5.30 am to 9.30 am, on June 5, 2022. The cycle rally was planned to reduce carbon emissions by motor vehicles on the occasion of World Environment Day. The event also celebrated the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, which comprises a series of programmes to celebrate 75 years of Independence. The main focus was on creating awareness around saving the environment. Four routes had been demarcated for the rally: Dahisar to Bandra Reclamation, NCPA to Bandra Reclamation, Mulund to Bandra Reclamation, and Mankhurd to Bandra Reclamation. Special permission had been given to cyclists to access the Bandra-Worli Sealink. Participants were asked to register online in advance. The cycle rally was part of the Sunday Streets program, an

initiative by police commissioner Sanjay Pandey, since March this year. The cyclists converged from all parts of Mumbai to assemble at Bandra reclamation and then it passed through the iconic Bandra-Worli Sealink and passing through the Worli sea face, it finished at Race Course, Mahalaxmi. It began at 5.30 am and ended at 9.30 am. “We congratulate all Mumbaikars for their huge response to the cycle rally. The event truly epitomized that Mumbaikars are on the same page as Mumbai police when it comes to saving the environment by choosing alternate modes of transport like cycling,” said deputy police commissioner (DCP Traffic) Raj Tilak Roushan. The cyclists also included those from “Cycle Chala, City Bacha” group led by Mumbai bicycle Mayor Firoza Suresh. The department had already planned to create a record for the maximum participation in the cycle rally, which they achieved with flying colours.

Mumbai Police had announced a day in advance that the megacycle rally would be held in association with Smart Commute Foundation. The participants were also told not to reach the starting point, as they were free to join the rally from whichever ward they lived in. Volunteers of the Cycle Chala, City Bacha were present at the venue to guide the cyclists. Since the deteriorating environment was a major concern in the financial capital of India, the traffic police of Mumbai have also announced a ‘No Honking Day’ every Wednesday to curb noise pollution on the roads and in the vicinity. Before this record-making cycle rally, over 200 cycling enthusiasts took to Mumbai streets on World Bicycle Day forming a single line, cycling all the way from Malad to Bandra Reclamation to spread awareness and draw the attention of Mumbaikars to the benefits of using a bicycle as an equitable, cost-effective, and sustainable means of transport. Mumbai bicycle mayor Ms. Firoza Suresh also took part in the campaign. It was shared that Mumbai being a linear city, had the potential to become the cycling capital of India by 2030 as bicycles are the future, and global cycling literacy is ever-increasing.
