Dear Readers,

The India Book of Records stamped two new records recently for which Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari and then Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed their happiness and congratulated the construction team through tweets. Such moments are special for us. In this case, L&T Construction created a sensation in the industry by laying bitumen on a 100 km road in 100 hours under the Ghaziabad-Aligarh Expressway. Read the details of this national achievement in this month’s cover story.

Meanwhile, an auto magazine set two records for covering all four metros in the country in the shortest possible time using an electric vehicle and for the fastest round trip of the Golden Quadrilateral also. In Gujarat’s Bhuj district, the Patidar community celebrated the centenary year of its organization by blowing more than 800 conch shells simultaneously. Read the story of this unique Shankhnaad inside. Similarly, hundreds of mothers from Indore set a new benchmark in fun-with-fitness by participating in the ‘Chalo Mumma’ Walkathon along with their kids.

A child from Hyderabad stunned everyone by trekking across the frozen Zanskar River in Ladakh. Adventure on the Chadar Trek is tough and even more challenging for a kid, but the boy set a record. A young man from Punjab had so much pain in his knees that it was difficult to walk. Nevertheless, he visited a gym to strengthen his upper body and then made his legs so powerful that he made a record for push-ups.

After reading such amazing stories of record-makers, maybe you too will get an idea to do something different.

Road SafetyAwareness campaign

India is home to the second-largest road network in the world, with a total road length of approximately 63.73 lakh kms. This massive network serves as the nation’s lifeline transporting over 64.5% of all goods within the country in addition to being the preferred option for moving over 90% of India’s passenger traffic. While roads remain synonymous with development and growth in the country, they have also been a nemesis for users in India, also carrying the dubious distinction of leading the global tally of annual deaths and injuries on account of road accidents.

1 India Book of Records | July 2023

There were 4,12,432 unfortunate incidents of road accidents during 2021, which claimed 1,53,972 lives and caused injuries to 3,84,448 persons.

Considering the graveness of the situation, 5K Car Care Pvt Ltd (a car detailing service provider) of Coimbatore, decided to sensitize the vehicle drivers about traffic rules and avoid accidents. The company successfully established a record for the ‘maximum number of people pledged to support road safety awareness while driving’ in Tamil Nadu. The campaign was carried out across all the traffic signals in the state from March 8, 2023, to April 2, 2023, wherein a total of 1 lakh people took

the pledge to support road safety awareness. The event was recognized by the India Book of Records.

Dr Karthick Kumar Chinnaraj, Founder of 5K Car Care Pvt Ltd, said, “Tamil Nadu has been in second place for the maximum number of accidents happening in India. This initiative was successfully conducted to reduce accidents and support road safety awareness while driving. We are delighted to get recognition from the India Book of Records and we are also grateful for the opportunity to positively impact the automotive community. This record is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire team. I hope that people will be more attentive now while driving on the roads.”

2 India Book of Records | July 2023

“The man behind the wheel plays an important role in most of the crashes. Most crashes occur as a result of carelessness or a lack of awareness of road safety among road users. Hence, road safety education is as essential as any other basic skill for survival. Being unaware of rules and regulations on the road or knowingly ignoring them is another major cause of road accidents. For instance, many drivers change lanes without giving a proper signal or without looking in the rearview mirror,” he added.

Earlier also the company had conducted a road safety awareness drive by making an art installation of 2500 sq ft size in 10 minutes. The event was assisted by the Coimbatore City

Police, Tamil Nadu. During the event, people were informed that road traffic injuries are the eighth leading cause of death globally. Numerous factors can be attributed to being the causative factors of road accidents like distracted driving, drunk driving, speeding or reckless driving, not wearing a seat belt, potholes and bad road conditions, breaking traffic rules and tailgating (driving or following closely behind another vehicle). 5K Car Care Pvt Ltd, established in Codissia in 2012, provides car detailing services through 150+ branches in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Telangana, and Puducherry.

The Expressway of Achievements

It was a proud moment for the entire nation when the Ghaziabad-Aligarh Expressway created history by achieving a remarkable feat – the laying of Bituminous Concrete over a distance of 100 lane kilometers in an unprecedented time of 100 hours. The accomplishment highlights the dedication and ingenuity of India’s road infrastructure industry. The road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari said this while extending his good wishes to the exceptional teams of Cube Highways, L&T, and Ghaziabad-Aligarh Expressway Pvt Ltd (GAEPL) for their outstanding achievement.

Gadkari tweeted, “Our commitment lies in ensuring exceptional mobility for every commuter, thereby promoting commerce

and driving economic activities in the region through the development of world-class highways at the fastest speed without compromising on quality.” Responding to his tweet thread, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “A notable accomplishment on a very important highway route. It manifests the importance of both speed and embracing modern methods for better infrastructure.”

The Ghaziabad-Aligarh section of the national highway (NH-34), spanning 118 kilometers, plays a vital role as a transportation link between the densely populated regions of Ghaziabad and Aligarh. This project traverses various towns and cities in Uttar Pradesh, including Dadri, Gautam Buddh Nagar, Sikandrabad,

Bulandshahr and Khurja. It serves as a critical trade route, facilitating the movement of goods and contributing to regional economic development by connecting industrial areas, agricultural regions, and educational institutions.

Gadkari further said, “Emphasizing our commitment to sustainability and cost-effectiveness, we have implemented the use of Cold Central Plant Recycling (CCPR) technology in the project. This innovative green technology involves utilizing 90% of the milled material, which amounts to nearly 20 lakh square meters of road surface. Consequently, the consumption of virgin materials has been reduced to a mere 10%. By adopting this approach, we have significantly reduced fuel consumption and the associated greenhouse gas emissions, thereby making a substantial contribution to lowering our carbon footprint.”

L&T Construction created two records on this expressway. The first one is for the longest length of flexible pavement laying and the second one is for the highest quantity of Bituminous Concrete laying. Both the records have been registered in the India Book of Records. This section of NH 34 falls between Ghaziabad to Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh. The L&T team laid a

Bituminous Concrete

The construction of the Ghaziabad-Aligarh section of the National Highway (NH-34) was carried out successfully with the use of innovative technologies and a highly skilled workforce. A special type of Bituminous Concrete was used by the consortium to construct this road in an unprecedented time span. The 118 km portion of the expressway will prove crucial for both cities (Ghaziabad and Aligarh) in terms of connectivity, tourism and generating employment opportunities. The Larsen & Toubro (L&T) expert team laid a length of 112.5 Lane Km of Bituminous Concrete at the Six Laning project, creating a

new milestone that has been recognized by the India Book of Records.

The construction team worked around the clock to make sure that the project was completed on time. The record-setting success is the best example of what can be achieved when the government, workforce and private sector work together. The road was built by Ghaziabad Aligarh Expressway Pvt Ltd, a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) of Cube Highways Trust, in collaboration with EPC contractor Larsen & Toubro Limited. Bituminous Concrete, also known as asphalt concrete, is

a composite material made of aggregate, such as sand or gravel, and bitumen - a sticky, black substance that is a form of asphalt. It is a versatile material that is used in a variety of applications, including road construction, roofing, and paving.

Bituminous concrete is a type of pavement material that consists of mineral aggregate bound together with bitumen, which is a byproduct of petroleum refining. It acts as a binding agent that gives the concrete a tar-like consistency when heated and hardens into a dense solid surface when cooled. Bituminous concrete is also known as asphalt concrete or simply asphalt in some regions. It is made by heating bitumen until it becomes a liquid and mixing it with aggregate. The aggregate provides strength and durability, while the bitumen acts as a binder that holds the aggregate together. The mixture is then poured into a mold or placed on a surface and allowed to cool and harden.

Bituminous Concrete is used for surfacing roads, parking lots, airports, and other public spaces. It is usually laid in layers and compacted by paving machines. It has some advantages over standard concrete, such as

lower cost, easier repair, smoother and quieter ride, and better resistance to cracking and rutting. However, it also has some disadvantages, such as environmental impact, lower strength, higher maintenance, and susceptibility to weathering and oxidation. Modern paver machines were used to lay asphalt on the expressway. It laid the asphalt flat and provided minor compaction before it was compacted by a roller. The paver machines had extendable hydraulic loading legs to allow for easy loading and transport and the ability to quickly change widths. Roller screed pavers were used for high-precision cylinder finish pavement.

expressways in UP will positively impact the state’s economic growth. Infrastructure development also helps boost the overall real estate sector in the region. All these expressways are being developed as part of the Bharat Mala Pariyojana in India. Several expressways are already in operation in Uttar Pradesh, while others are upcoming. The Bharatmala Pariyojna is an ecosystem of road development that includes the development of tunnels, bridges, elevated corridors, flyovers, overpasses, interchanges, bypasses, ring roads, etc to provide the shortest, jam-free and optimized connectivity to multiple places.

Bharatmala is a centrally-sponsored and funded Road and Highways project of the Government of India, which is mainly focused on connecting remote areas and satellite cities of megacities such as Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad, etc. The project will build highways from Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana and then cover the entire string of Himalayan territories - Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and then portions of borders of Uttar Pradesh and

The Pregnancyfashion show

Celebrities have set a new trend for the new-age momsto-be. Rather than picking up oversized shirts of their husbands, women today prefer to flaunt baby bumps in style. Maternity fashion is not a one-size styling effort. While pregnant women experience a variety of changes in their bodies along with a continually growing bump, this requires them to be aware of how to dress the new shape. The combo of fashion and pregnancy was witnessed at the Kinder Hospitals of Kochi, Kerala, which organised the largest pregnancy fashion show event named ‘Kinder Tharattazaku Season 2’ on May 14, 2023, to celebrate World Mother’s Day.

The event was truly a remarkable sight to see. The grand pregnancy fashion took place at the Gokulam Park Hotel & Convention Centre in Kochi, wherein a total of 100 pregnant women took part in the special fashion show which celebrated pregnancy and motherhood. The record for the largest pregnant women fashion show contest was set by Kinder Hospitals of Kerala. It was held at Gokulam Park Hotel & Convention Centre and 100 pregnant women did the ramp walk.

The fashion show had three different rounds, and the participants looked absolutely stunning, showcasing their confidence and maternity fashion in a way that has never been done before. The event was a grand success with the participation of 100 pregnant women from across Kerala. ‘Chalo Mumma’ Walkathon

International Mother’s Day was celebrated on the second Sunday of May, i.e. on May 14, 2023. The importance of Mother’s Day lies in the recognition of the important role that mothers play in our lives. Mothers are often the primary caregivers and nurturers in families, and their tireless efforts and sacrifices are often taken for granted. Mother’s Day serves as an opportunity to express gratitude and appreciation for all that mothers do. The day advocates for women’s rights and social issues affecting mothers and families. In addition to celebrating individual mothers, Mother’s Day is also a time to celebrate motherhood in general.

Aarti Awdhesh Maheshwari, Founder of The World of Fitness, celebrated this special day in a memorable manner by organising a walkathon for the women and mothers of Indore, Madhya Pradesh. The day was marked for the ‘Chalo Mumma Walkathon’ event organised by her to convey the message that “women should also go out of the house and focus on physical activities so that their fitness level can increase”. In the process, she established a record for ‘maximum number of mothers and children participating in a walkathon’. The event saw participation from a total of 300 ‘mother and child’ pairs who walked for 3 kilometers from 6 am to 8 am to celebrate

The event also had a performance of Kathak dance and a play based on Maa Ahilyabai Holkar, staged by school students. A few women bikers were also there to guide the walkathon route. Antim Kumar Jain, Adjudicator from the India Book of Records, was also present at the venue to witness and verify the claim. After announcing the completion of the records, he felicitated Aarti Awdhesh Maheshwari with certificates and medals. After the event was over, all the participants were distributed medals as a token of participation and the guests and sponsors were honoured with mementos.

the bonding between a mother and her child. The feat was recognised by the India Book of Records and the Asia Book of Records together.

Many social groups, non-government organisations (NGOs) and societies also participated in the walkathon, which was sponsored and supported by sponsors like Kesar Boutique (Clothing with Style), HDFC Bank, Motherhood Hospital, Shreedhi Milk, and Upanishad Child Development Centre. Mothers of 25 to 40 years age group participated in the walkathon, flagged off by Girija Kumari, Commissioner, Indore Municipal Corporation. The walkathon started from Nehru Stadium, went up to Daly College, and returned back to Nehru Stadium covering a distance of

Talking to the IBR magazine, Aarti Maheshwari said, “The purpose of this programme was to celebrate Mother’s Day as well as to convey the message that happiness is walking with your child. The pandemic had confined mothers to their houses and they were limited to online activities only. We encouraged mothers to venture out and be healthy. Through this programme, the kids also got a great opportunity to walk with their mothers. We started planning for the event one month before. The weather had been unpredictable with sudden rains and posed a challenge, but fortunately, everything went well.”

Cross Country EV Drive

The talk about sustainable mobility and electric cars is increasingly dominating the debate and there is an increasing push from the government towards the making and selling of electric cars in the country. While it may have been possible to use an electric car as a city runabout, most have been skeptical of doing long trips with electric cars. To test the readiness of the country for electric vehicles, Auto Today decided to embark on an ambitious drive across the country. Starting off at the city of Varanasi on the Golden Quadrilateral (or G-Quad), the team drove to Kolkata, on to Chennai and Bengaluru, and from there to Pune, Mumbai, Vadodara, Udaipur, Jaipur, Delhi, Lucknow and back to Varanasi.

In the process, the magazine set the record for the fastest Golden Quadrilateral Round Trip in an electric car, i.e. the Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 4MATIC. The drive was flagged off from Varanasi on February 16, 2023, at 12 am by Vivek Sharma, General Manager, and Amit Tandon, Director of Sales. In the end, the drive was finished at Varanasi on February 20, 2023, at 3.47 pm, totaling a run time of 111 hrs and 47 mins. This includes 15 stops and charging for 25 hours 44 mins. The driving time for the record was 79 hrs and 28 mins, as confirmed and recognized by the India Book of Records. The choice of the Mercedes brand was obvious because it is the car that comes with the highest range on a single charge and it has already set up fast chargers at its dealerships across India.

With unforeseen delays and charging problems, the team spent over two hours getting into and out of Kolkata and an hour getting out of Bengaluru and another hour getting to Pune. While they knew whatever time it would take to do the entire drive would be a record, the intention was never to set records but just to prove that electric cars, which are currently a more

sustainable option, can be used to drive right across the country and could be the future of mobility also. There were three sets of professional drivers, all from the Auto Today magazine team, who completed the drive in four legs. The first leg (Varanasi to Kolkata) and the fourth leg (Chennai to Pune) were taken care of by Yogendra Pratap and Dhruv Saxena. The second leg (Kolkata to Vizag) was managed by Rahul Ghosh and Dipayan Dutta; while the third leg (Vizag to Chennai) was completed by Abhik Das and Gurdeep Bhalla.

Dipayan Dutta told the India Book of Records magazine, “Owing to traffic jams on the way, the car reached Kolkata seven hours after it was supposed to. A background check of the route revealed that the second leg had the absolute worst roads on this route as the Golden Quadrilateral was being upgraded. Our strategy was simply to play to our strengths. The first part between Kolkata and Bhubaneswar was to be piloted by Rahul, and the next leg, which had four lanes all the way to Vizag was my duty. We left Kolkata, in the midst of rush hour and handed the keys over to Abhik Das at Vizag before rushing to the airport to catch our flight out.”

“The lack of EV charging infrastructure has necessitated the use of the available ecosystem which in this case, meant that a Mercedes EV would be welcomed into a BMW dealership. For the last stint of the fourth leg from Belagavi to Pune, the only thing on our minds was making up for time lost by charging slower than anticipated. Narrower highways as we entered Maharashtra, sugarcane-laden tractors moving at an excruciatingly slow pace, tried their best to slow us down, but we managed to average a more than respectable 74 kmph over the 338 km stint,” said Dhruv Saxena.

16 India Book of Records | July 2023

It was a race against time

The Auto Today magazine set the record for the minimum time taken to cover 6000 km in an electric vehicle (EV). The team covered a distance of 6000 km while driving cross-country in the Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 on public roads. The drive which started from the City of Ghats – Varanasi, on February 16, 2023, at 12 am, was completed in 110 hours and 35 minutes at Varanasi, including 15 stops for charging spanning 25 hours and 44 minutes. The car was driven non-stop in a record time of 78 hours and 16 minutes making its way to the Asia Book of Records (ABR). The record was certified and the certificates were handed over to the Mercedes-Benz India leadership team at the company’s manufacturing facility in Chakan near Pune, Maharashtra.

In the past year, not only has charging infrastructure development for EVs been given a push, but a number of world-class electric cars have also been launched in the country. Starting and ending at Varanasi, the test drive for cross country covered the route connecting the four metro cities of India called the Golden Quadrilateral. On the way, it passed through the cities of Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Pune, Mumbai, Jaipur, Delhi and Lucknow. The vehicle was driven solely by Auto Today team members with strategic driver swaps to ensure driver fatigue was kept at bay.

The Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 was picked for the sustainability drive. The brand has installed its own charging points across the country however, over the course of the 6000-plus kilometer drive, extensive use of public chargers was made, putting the country’s EV charging infrastructure to the test. From traffic jams to

charging-related issues, sudden power cuts, faulty chargers et al., driving teams had to constantly improvise, adapt and overcome adverse situations. The EV kept the drivers

comfortable, while Mercedes-Benz’s extensive network of fast chargers helped them stay on track as they drove along highways, some good, some bad, across the country’s everchanging landscape on their way to setting the record.

The app that the Asia Book of Records representatives had started at flag-off was stopped as the car entered the Taj Ganges in Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh) after 111 hrs and 47 mins on February 20 at 3.47 pm. The record was set! Owing to the sheer scale of the drive that covered over 6000 km in total, the team ended up setting double records in the process. It also proved that long-distance driving in electric vehicles is a reality in India today.

Driving in the Rann of Kutch

It was the first electric vehicle (EV) to travel across Rann of Kutch in Gujarat. We are talking about the Mahindra XUV400EV, driven by Ninad Mirajgaonkar, and put to the test by Car & Bike. The attempt earned the organisers a proud place in the prestigious India Book of Records under the category of ‘covering the maximum distance by an EV on a single charge at the Rann of Kutch’. Ninad drove the SUV on March 23, 2023, at 6.19 am from Bajana -- the Little Rann of Kutch, and ended at 6.34 pm at White Rann, a part of the Greater Rann of Kutch, after driving for 338.3 km across the Rann for 9 hours, 25 minutes and 41 seconds till the car had only 3% charge left. The vehicle was driven at an average speed of 35.9 kmph throughout the journey.

The Rann of Kutch is a large area of salt marshes that span the border between India and Pakistan. It is located in the Kutch district of Gujarat and is divided into the Great Rann and Little Rann. Many rivers originating in Rajasthan and Gujarat flow into the Rann of Kutch, including the Luni, Bhuki, Bharud, Nara, Kharod, Banas, Saraswati, Rupen, Bambhan, and Machchhu. Kori Creek and Sir Creek, tidal creeks which are part of the Indus River Delta, are located at the western end of the Great Rann. Commenting on the drive, Ninand Mirajgaonkar, Head of Curated Content at Car & Bike, said, “Driving across the Rann of Kutch on a single charge was an enlightening experience. We started on the backfoot with unseasonal rains that made parts of the journey even more challenging with slush. Once we started

though, the capabilities of the electric vehicle made it easier as we progressed through the day, not only were we always on track in terms of range, but by the end of the journey we were

convinced that on everyday roads we will be able to extract even more range for the vehicle.”

During the record-making drive, Ninand kept his cool in pressure situations. His expertise in driving the INRC cars made him appear tough and composed all along the journey. Here, INRC stands for the Indian National Rally Championship, a rallying series organised by the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI). Not only the driver, but the vehicle also proved its competence in this attempt. The all-electric SUV features three driving modes -- Fun, Fast, and Fearless. The driving mode was changed to fearless at certain patches to cover the ground rapidly. The vehicle comes with two variants -- the XUV400 EC gets a 34.5 kWh battery pack offering 375 km of range, and the EL packs a larger 39.4 kWh unit offering a claimed 456 km per charge.

Roll Ball is a game played between two teams. It is played on roller shoes. Each team consists of 12 players, 6 on the field and 6 in reserve. The main objective of the game is to score maximum goals within a stipulated time. The main feature of Roll Ball is that the ball is held in single or both hands, even when passing on to the other players, and is repeatedly bounced on the ground. It is a comparatively new game, which is being managed by the International Roll Ball Federation. The federation promotes the game in all countries of the world to make the game popular among school and college students.

The Shiv Ganga Roller Skating Club, Belagavi, Belgaum, Karnataka, created a record for the longest non-stop Roll Ball Relay Marathon and made it to the India Book of Records (IBR) and Asia Book of Records (ABR) simultaneously. As many as 137 trainees of the Roller Skating Club achieved the distinction of holding the longest Roll Ball skating match in the country. The participants of different age groups played in the marathon for 51 hours, which started at 4 pm on May 5, 2023, and concluded at 5 pm on May 7, 2023, at the Skating Club.

Jyoti Chindak of ShivGanga Roller Skating Club, Belagavi, says, “We are happy to achieve the record and get recognition from the IBR and ABR both. Shiv Ganga is not just a skating arena, but it’s a big family and home to all the athletes of India. The event helped the students and players to interact and exchange their cultural values and views with each other. It also created a sense of unity and brotherhood between them. Roll Ball, a fast-growing sport of the

century has now spread its wings throughout the world. It has received the attention of various people in the sports fraternity and applause from the general public. Roll Ball has now become the heartthrob sport of all the youth. It is the sport of balance, speed, accuracy and teamwork.”

The players were invited to the Skating Club on May 4 for reporting. The next morning they had to go through the medical checkup and the main record-setting attempt was done on May 5-7, 2023. The aim was to organise the longest non-stop Roll Ball relay marathon ever recorded. The Shiv Ganga Roller Skating Club achieved the goal by playing non-stop for a whopping 51 hours and got its name entered into the two most prestigious publications from India, i.e. IBR and ABR. The record certificates were given to the organisers at a celebratory event held at the skating club at 5 pm on May 7, 2023.

Musical Push to Stop Child Labour

Chennai witnessed the largest keyboard ensemble on May 1, 2023, under the aegis of Mellifluous Melodies on Keyboard, a music school which focuses on teaching Carnatic music through the keyboard. The event was held at the grand Centenary Auditorium of St Bede’s School, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, in association with Madhuradhwani Sangeetha Sabha. MS Martin, the founder of the school, hosted the world’s largest keyboard ensemble to support the cause of stopping child labour. The event featured 445 keyboard music students, aged between 5 and 20, from across the state of Tamil Nadu. Music teachers from across the state also pitched in to support the event. The musical attempt made its way directly to the Asia Book of Records.

A pioneer in creating a culture of Carnatic music on the keyboard, Martin is known for his unique talent and style of writing notations for Carnatic composers. He is the grandson of Nadhaswaram maestro Shri Gnana Prakasam and the son of Mariya Susai, a Clarinet artist. Martin got the Isaimamani Award in 1993 from Annamalai University. Earlier also, he conducted

three large-scale social awareness campaigns through music, setting records in 2011, 2014, and 2017. As a versatile artist, Martin began his musical journey with Sivan Arts Academy and later founded his institution - Mellifluous Melodies on Keyboard. Through his music school, he has trained hundreds of students in Chennai, Bangalore, the UK and the USA.

A gold medalist himself, in BA- Music from Annamalai University, Martin has been energizing the lives of children, with Carnatic music on a Western musical instrument. He has a keen eye for young talent and has always worked to bring child prodigies to notice. Working purely on instinct, he set about fusing two musical cultures. “I wanted to replicate what I learnt on the harmonium through the keyboard,” he says. The process was cumbersome, he started off with the most primitive of keyboards 30 years ago, and it was difficult for him to reproduce the authentic strains of the ragas. But, with time, keyboards came with modifications in favour of Carnatic music.

22 India Book of Records | July 2023

Mellifluous Melodies founder MS

Martin of Chennai set a record for the maximum number of people in a keyboard ensemble, where 445 students participated to create awareness against child labour.

After a major performance in 2011, Yamaha company approached him and asked how he would like the keyboard to be tuned. Martin requested Yamaha to include an adjustable pitch blender that would help the keyboard produce Carnatic music in its purest form. It can be turned off while playing Western tunes so that there will be no Carnatic undertone to it. In an earnest attempt to bring accompanying instruments like the Keyboard into focus, Martin founded Madhuradhwani Sangeetha Sabha which showcases budding talents in instrumental music. It hosts a week-long music festival at Arkay

Convention Centre and many other awareness concerts as well for the past two years.

Martin has organised various concerts and events pan India, at places like The Music Academy, Narada Gana Sabha, Bharathi Vidya Bhawan and Tamil Isai Sangam – Isai Vizha (Annual Music Festival) in Raja Annamalai Mandram. His concerts with his disciples at Thiruvayaar, Tirupathi and Shirdi have won the admiration of laymen and connoisseurs alike. He has got admiration from luminaries like TV Gopalakrishnan, M Balamuralikrishna, Haridwaramangalam, AK Palanivel, Gangai Amaran, Padma Bhushan SP Balasubramaniam, Vikku Vinayakram, Violin Maestro Chandrasekaran, Veenai Gayathri, Mellisai Mannar MS Viswanathan, Violin Duo M Lalitha and Nandini.

Shankhnaad Celebration

Blowing a conch shell or shankh is considered beneficial to human health. Drinking the water kept overnight in a conch helps in curing Jaundice, skin ailments, and problems related to bones, teeth and stomach, because the shells are made of Calcium, Phosphorus, Sulphur, Magnesium, etc. The scalar sound waves that are generated by blowing the conch balance the Chakras in the body. The vibration it produces purifies the air

and is believed to destroy the disease-causing germs present in the atmosphere. It not only enables us to inhale a lot of air but also helps in contracting the muscles from the face to the foot. Blood gushes and improves circulation supplying oxygen to each cell of our body. The blowing of the conch works on the thyroid, muscles of the neck and the vocal cords too. Not only this. It helps children and adults with problems with speech.

24 India Book of Records | July 2023

To spread awareness on the above-mentioned benefits of conch shell, a record-setting attempt was made by Shree Akhil Bhartiya Kutch Kadva Patidar Samaj (ABKKP), Akhil Bharatiya Kutch Kadva Patidar Yuvasangh, Shree Akhil Bharatiya Kutch Kadva Patidar Mahilasangh of Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The organisers successfully set a record for ‘maximum people blowing conch shells together at a single venue’. A total of 851 participants came together at Sri Patidar Vidhyarthi Bhavan, Bhuj on May 10, 2023, and simultaneously blew the conch shell 10 times while the music was played in the background. The event made its way in the prestigious India Book of Records and Asia Book of Records simultaneously.

The event also celebrated the completion of 100-years of ABKKP and 50-years of its Yuvasangh - a Diamond Jubilee and Golden Jubilee respectively. All conch shell were brought to the venue by the participants themselves which they had kept at their homes for years and years at the pooja mandaps.

Mahesh Patel, Secretary, Ramsetu Council of ABKKP Yuvasangh, told the India Book of Records magazine that, “This record was made as a symbol of appreciation to the good work done by the Patidar community’s Covid Warriors during the pandemic. We also wanted to spread awareness on the Fit India initiative started by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It is a fact that blowing a conch shell helps in achieving a healthy state of lungs and

tract. Blowing respiratory tracts do have a great spiritual value in Sanatan Dharma. The sound generated through blowing of Shankh is said to resemble the sacred sound of AUM (Om) in Hinduism.”

All things were planned and arranged many days before the Shankhnaad attempt. A social media campaign was run to create awareness about the event among the community members. A customised music was composed by world class musicians for this attempt and a team of dancers was also made to create a vibrant environment for the event. A four-acre land was cleared and surfaced for the event at Nakhatrana (Kutch) a week in advance.

Members of ABKKP community from India and abroad participated in the attempt. The programme was held in the presence of His Holiness Shri Param Poojya Purshottam Prakshdas Shashtriji Maharaj, Dharm Charandasji Maharaj, Mohandasji Maharaj, Keshavdasji Maharaj, Vallabh Krishna Acharyaji, Bharati Didi, Rama Didi and Dipali Didi, Ritesh Harshad Kumar Chanpura and Akshar Chanpura.

Menstrual hygiene awareness workshop

26 India Book of Records | July 2023

Menstrual Hygiene is essential to the well-being and empowerment of women and adolescent girls. To effectively manage their menstruation, girls and women require access to water, sanitation and hygiene facilities, affordable and appropriate menstrual hygiene materials, information on good practices, and a supportive environment where they can manage menstruation without embarrassment or stigma. The challenges that menstruating girls and women face encompass more than a basic lack of supplies or infrastructure. While menstruation is a normal and healthy part of life for most women and girls, in many societies, their experience continues to be constrained by cultural taboos and discriminatory social norms. The resulting lack of information about menstruation leads to unhygienic and unhealthy menstrual practices and creates misconceptions and negative attitudes.

To impart knowledge around the subject, Vandana Garg of Kolkata, a social worker and certified teacher of Art of Living, created a record of menstrual hygiene awareness workshops conducted for maximum adolescent girls. The workshop was held at Shyam Garden Salkia Bhadhghat, Howrah, West Bengal, on May 28, 2023. A total of 1675 adolescent girls participated in the programme. Debarati Ghosh, ADM of Howrah district was the chief guest. The mega workshop made its way to the India Book of Records (IBR).

Vandana Garg, born and brought up in Howrah, belongs to the Marwari Community, and is trained in Utkarsha Yoga, Medha Yoga and Intuition Programme and is well versed in Menstrual Hygiene. She has been tirelessly working to create menstrual hygiene awareness among adolescent girls for the past five years. She conducts workshops mostly in government schools. With unwavering determination, she started her journey with a batch of 50 girls, but her efforts steadily grew over time. Through the workshops, she created a safe and inclusive space for girls to learn and discuss important topics related to

their menstrual health. Her sessions go beyond just imparting information; they encourage open conversations, dispel myths, and equip girls with practical tools and resources to manage their periods hygienically.

Her work in government schools has a significant impact on backward-class communities, where access to information and resources may be limited. By focusing on these schools, she ensures that no girl is left behind, empowering them with the knowledge they need to navigate this crucial aspect of their lives. The record-setting workshop was also joined by the IBR adjudicator, Arindam Sengupta, who verified the claim and handed over the certificate and a medal to Vandana Garg. All the participants were given a bag full of goodies like sanitary pads, coconut oil, soap, jaggery, chana, Dettol and sanitizer, etc. The goodie bags were arranged through donation, sponsorship and personal contribution.

“My dedication and commitment have not only empowered individual girls but also fostered a broader cultural shift in how

menstruation is perceived and discussed.

Through My efforts, the girls I reach become advocates for change within their own communities, helping to break down the barriers of stigma and ignorance. By reaching out to an ever-increasing number of girls, I am sowing the seeds of change that will continue to flourish long after my workshops conclude. I thought about conducting this mega workshop when I realised that many adolescent girls were skipping school on those days missing valuable insight and knowledge due to lack of awareness and means,” said Vandana.

The Waterman of Amravati

Practice makes perfect. This theory is totally true with a police constable posted in the Amravati district of Maharashtra. We are talking about constable Pravin Dadarao Akhare (45), a swimmer from childhood. Earlier he had no idea of water yoga. One year ago, he thought about it and started practicing. His father, Dadarao Marotrao Akhare was also in police service and he was awarded the President’s Medal for his remarkable services. Inspired by his father’s glorious career, Pravin Akhare thought about putting his best foot forward and earning a position in water yoga. He has now made a record for ‘performing the maximum number of yogasana on water’ and got his name placed in the prestigious India Book of Records. Pravin Akhare performed a total of 50 yogasana (yoga positions) on the water at Takshashila Swimming Pool, Uttam Nagar, Amravati, in 22 minutes and 52 seconds on May 28, 2023. The yoga positions included Tadasana, Namaskarasana, Shavasana, Garudasana, Ustrasana, Utkatasana, Uttanpadasana, Trikonasana, Naukasana, Gomukhasana, Natrajasana, Pawanmuktasana, etc. The record-setting attempt was held in the gracious presence of senior police officers of the district, including Navin Chandra Reddy (IPS), Police Commissioner, Amravati; Mangesh Vyaware, Krida Ratna awardee; Sagar Patil, Deputy Commissioner of Police; Vikram Sali, Deputy Commissioner of Police; and PT Patil, DCP (Retd). Dr Manoj Tatwadi, Adjudicator from the India Book of Records, verified the claim of record and presented the certificate and a medal to Pravin Akhare.

Pravin had joined the police department through the sports quota. During his service at the flood control and rescue squad from 2012 to 2019, he rescued 55 civilians and pulled 78 bodies from flooded areas. His police job keeps him busy and it is very difficult to find spare time for swimming practice. “Fortunately, I got posted at the police swimming pool recently, where I start my practice at 4 o’clock in the morning. I do practice in the

night when the pool is closed during holidays,” he told the IBR magazine.

He finds yoga positions like Padmasan, Garudasan, Utkrasan, Tadasan and Parvatasan a little bit more difficult than others. Making a world record is on his wish list. He also wants to train others in water yoga. For water yoga enthusiasts, his advice is – Keep practicing honestly and follow the guidelines given by the instructors. Before setting a record for 50 yogasan in 22 minutes, he was doing 25 yogasan in 60 minutes. Focusing on his goal, he brought the time to a low level and succeeded in performing 50 yoga positions in 22 minutes and 52 seconds. Pravin Akhare, the waterman of Amravati, says, “Yoga helps in maintaining good health. Therefore, the importance of Yogasana is increasing not only in the country but also all over the world. International Yoga Day is now celebrated worldwide on June 21 every year. Everyone should follow a healthy lifestyle and take an interest in yoga, swimming and other sports of choice.”

The Samaysar Jain Stambh

Samaysar, a book having the principles of Jainism, was composed around 2000 years ago by Acharya Kundkund Dev. The book is originally in the Prakrit language, which was later published in many other languages also including Sanskrit and Hindi. It has been scripted in a total of 415 stories. Vijay Kumar Badjatiya (73), an industrialist from Indore, has set the record for installing the ‘maximum number of Samaysar Kirti Stambh with inscriptions of Samaysar verses’ in various cities and villages across India. Celebrating Shri Samaysar

Kahan Shatabdi Mahotsav, he conceptualised the idea of keeping the verses safe for future generations by installing 39 Marble hexagonal Samaysar Kirti Stambh (Jain Stambh). The achievement has been recognised by the India Book of Records.

Shri Samaysar Keerti Stambh is a marble hexagonal pillar in which some of the Gathas of Samaysar, the great scripture of Jainism, have been engraved. Each Stambh is 7 feet high and placed on a 4 feet high platform with 415 or 100 Samaysar

verses inscribed on it. The front side has the mention of Lord Shri Simandhar Swami; the original creator of this book Shri Kundkund Acharya Dev; and the spiritual saint Shri Kanji Swami, who explained its meaning. In the other five parts of the pillar, the original stories of the book have been inscribed. Along with this, a replica of the Panchaparmagam texts along with the replica of Samyasar Granth has been established at the top.

Vijay Badjatiya told the India Book of Records magazine, “On the completion of 100 years of receiving Samaysar Granth from spiritual saint Shri Kanji Swami, in 2021-22, I got an idea of celebrating Shri Samyasar Kahan Shatabdi Mahotsav. Then, the Samaysar Kahan Centenary Festival was organized by Shri Kundkund Kahan Jain Teerth Suraksha Trust, Mumbai, and Shri Kundkund Kahan Paramarthik Trust, Mumbai. A national-level committee was formed and work was started with a comprehensive action plan involving every Mumukshu institution. Following this, Shri Samaysar Kahan Shatabdi Mahotsav Samiti was formed and I was appointed its General Secretary on March 13, 2021.”

Along with the establishment of Shri Samaysar Granth, Vijay Badjatiya’s efforts also established Samaysar Kirti Stambh at different places in the country so that the message of Jainism could be kept alive for many years to come. It was not an easy task. Initially, the stories of the entire book were inscribed but it seemed difficult to read, then 100 major stories were engraved on the marble, and the work of installation followed. Prateek Joshi, the Adjudicator from the India Book of Records verified the claim and handed over the certificate and a medal to Vijay Badjatiya at a function held in Indore on May 20, 2023. Places, where the Kirti Stambhs are installed, include Indore, Kota, Shikharji, Bhilwara, Kolkata, Gajpantha, Dhasala, Shivpuri, Guna, Aron, Ashok Nagar, Radhogarh, Deolali, Ajmer, Delhi,

Motivational heart-shaped leaves

This year’s World Hypertension Day (May 17, 2023) focused on the efforts to combat the low awareness rates of hypertension, especially in low to middle-income areas and to promote accurate blood pressure measurement methods. The role of primary healthcare physicians is pivotal in the prevention and management of hypertension in rural India. In keeping with this year’s focus and continuing its commitment to strengthening hypertension treatment protocol in India, Dr Reddy’s rural healthcare team engaged with 30,813 doctors

and primary healthcare providers from rural India to educate them on the right treatment protocols for their hypertensive patients.

Team Vistara+ and Synergy of Dr Reddy’s Laboratories of Hyderabad Telangana, set a record for the largest heartshaped structure formed using leaves. To commemorate World Hypertension Day, a heart-shaped structure was formed using heart-shaped leaves measuring 10x10 inches with the names of 30,813 participant doctors written on them, arranged in the

form of creepers to raise awareness for Hypertension treatment protocol in rural India. The installation weighs nearly 200 kg and is set up at Dr Reddy’s IPDO office campus in Bachupally, Hyderabad, Telangana. The activity made its way to the prestigious Asia Book of Records.

The Hypertension treatment protocol is guided by the India Hypertensive Control Initiative (IHCI), conceptualised by the Government of India’s Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), World Health Organization (WHO) Country Office for India and Resolve to Save Lives. Asia Book of Records adjudicator Ram Mohan Reddy presented the citation certificate of ‘Largest heart-shaped structure formed

received the Asia Book of Records certificate from Dr Reddy’s. The company aims to keep the installation at its premises for over a year. MV Ramana, CEO of Branded Markets (India & Emerging Markets), Dr Reddy’s, said, “As per WHO, at least one in four adults in India has hypertension, but only about 12 percent of them have their blood pressure under control.”

Ramana said, “Prevalence of hypertension in the rural population is equally high. Some of the main factors intensifying the hypertension disease in India include low healthcare literacy, poor patient self-care, high self-medication rate, inconsistent hypertension management guidelines, and nonadherence to treatment plans and medical regimens. In order to combat hypertension prevalence and curb growing cases in India, the need of the hour is to raise awareness among patients and with the help of doctors.”

Dr Reddy’s rural healthcare team was established in August 2022 with a mission to improve awareness, diagnosis and treatment of chronic diseases. It has been constantly working with doctors based in rural areas for better management of diabetes and hypertension. In December 2022, the team initiated an American School of CME (ASCME) certification programme in the management of chronic diseases. It has so far engaged over 5,200 rural primary healthcare providers. In January 2023, with the objective of raising awareness, the team launched a unique programme ‘Unite against Diabetes & Hypertension by raising awareness in community’ (UDAY). Under this programme, the team has promoted awareness among 15,000 doctors.

Drumming his way to glory

With the dream of performing Thayambaka in front of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, an 11-year-old boy from Kollam, performed Thayambaka and Pancharimelam for 4 hours at Mahadeva Temple, Karunagapally, Patanayarkulangara in Kerala. The feat created a record for the ‘maximum number of hours of Thayambaka and Pancharimelam performance’ and got a prominent mention in the prestigious India Book of Records (IBR).

We are talking about Giridhar R Sharma, whose motto is - Dream Big and Work hard. The boy used Chenda, a percussion instrument, and improvised rhythmically on the beats while performing Thayambaka for 1 hour 36 minutes and Pancharimelam for 2 hours 24 minutes at a stretch on May 21, 2023. The programme was attended by Mahesh, the local MLA.

The record for the ‘maximum number of hours of Thayambaka and Pancharimelam performance was set by 11-year-old Giridhar Sharma of Kollam, Kerala, who performed at Mahadeva Temple, Karunagapally.

36 India Book of Records | July 2023

Giridhar, a student in grade 6, started playing drums at the tender age of 6 years. Henda (drum) is his favourite musical instrument and nobody had scored a record with a drum, which motivated the boy to set a record under the banner of IBR. His parents are in the teaching profession and besides drumming, he also loves to play the violin and keyboard. Drawing is also one of his favourite hobbies. But, at the same time, he loves Mathematics as a subject. His ambition is of being recognised as a global performer.

Giridhar R Sharma told the India Book of Records that Thayambaka is a type of solo Chenda (percussion) performance from Kerala, in which the main player at the centre improvises rhythmically on the beats of half-a-dozen or a few more Chenda and Ilathalam players around. A thayambaka performance on the chenda has thus its focus on the stick-and-palm rolls produced on the Itantala (treble) of the Chenda, while the rhythm is laid by his fellow instrumentalists on the Valanthala (bass) Chendas and Ilathalam (cymbals). Thayambaka generally spans an average of 90 minutes. It begins at a slow pace before scaling on to a medium tempo and eventually culminating in high, frenzied speed.

It has a skeletal pattern on which the performance progresses, but the main performer has the liberty to improvise and innovate to showcase his grip of rhythm, the finesse of techniques and cerebral brilliance. In fact, thayambaka is one chenda concert that allows maximum individual freedom to the

main player. This is primarily a temple art, but it is also performed outside shrines, mostly at the annual festivals soon after the sunset ritual of Deeparadhana inside the sanctum sanctorum.

Similarly, Pancharimelam is a percussion ensemble, performed during temple festivals in Kerala. It is one of the major forms of Chendamelam (ethnic drum ensemble) and is the bestknown and most popular in the temple percussion genre. Pancharimelam, comprising instruments like Chenda, Ilathalam, Kombu and Kuzhal, is performed during festivals, where it is presented in the most classical manner. Kerala has high hopes for Giridhar, who is loving his musical skills and getting recognition too.

Super Cyclist Ortho Surgeon

Life is full of surprises. It must have changes to get rid of monotony in life and in my life, it came during the middle phase of life after a medical problem. I changed my lifestyle and started cycling 6 years back, in 2016, for fitness only, which later on developed into a passion. I joined Audax India Randonneur Club, under the guidance of International Audax Club Parisian, in May 2017 and started doing BRM events (brevets). Now at the age of 54, I am at the summit and have made a record in Audax Endurance Cycling. I have been honoured for the same by India Book of Records (IBR) thrice, says Dr Pawan Dhingra, MS (Orthopaedics), MCh, from Dev Hospital, Ludhiana, Punjab.

Dr Dhingra has set the record for the maximum number of super randonneurs titles won in five years. The feat is recognized by the India Book of Records and the Asia Book of Records as well. He won 31 Super Randonneur titles in 142 BRM events amounting to 55,000 km from May 2017 to October 2022 in different cities of various states. An amateur cyclist for the last 6 years, he started longdistance endurance timebound cycling in 2017 under Audax India Randonneurs, in association with International Club ACP (Audax Club Parisian) Paris. “I have attempted a total of 142 events till date and have also done two 1000 km (Delhi-Wagah-Delhi), 1200 km (Noida-JammuNoida), 1200 km (Jalandhar-Jammu-Suratgarh-Jalandhar), 1400 km (Delhi-Nepal-Delhi), 1460 km G2G (India Gate to Gateway of India), 1480 km B2B (Delhi Bridge to Howrah Bridge). I have travelled on my bicycle across 20 states and UTs, around 20 major national highways with so many sub-highways, 300 cities and 20 Audax India Clubs. I passed around many heritage and religious places like Shirdi, Nanded, Ajanta Ellora caves, Sardar Sarovar Dam, Sardar Patel’s Statue of Unity, Khandala, Golden Temple, Dal Lake, Sangam, Kartarpur Corridor, Western Ghats, etc. I have met so many people of different cultures and biodiversities, experienced different weather and terrains, made so many new friends across India, tasted different types of food and felt that India is shining bright,” said Dr Dhingra. This style of cycling is non-competitive in nature, and selfsufficiency is paramount. Participation in randonneuring events is part of a long tradition that goes back to the beginning of the sport of cycling in France and Italy. Friendly camaraderie and perseverance are the hallmarks of randonneuring. Dr Dhingra says that his mission is to promote cycling in schools, colleges and industries to encourage children and young people to commute on bicycles for education and work. “I want to educate all cycling commuters, especially those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, on road safety and basic road rules such as using reflective vests and helmets. So overall, my aim is to popularise cycling in urban areas and make it a safe option,” he added.

The DattaMahaYajna

Lord Dattatreya is the one who is believed to be the incarnation of the three great gods in one, the trinity of Lord Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. He is revered as a Universal Guru and ultimate in knowledge and wisdom. Dattatreya was born as a son to Rishi Atri and Anusuya. They were given a boon by Lord Brahma (the Supreme Consciousness) that He will take birth as their son. Usually, Lord Dattatreya is depicted with three faces symbolizing Lord Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. He has 6 hands, dogs around him symbolizing the four Vedas, having Conch (Shankh) representing the eternal sound AUM, the Kamadhenu Cow beside him representing Mother Earth and Dharma and the trident symbolizing transcended over the three Gunas.

The worship of Lord Dattatreya helps to achieve desires and attain happiness and success in every front of life. This ritual is associated with knowledge, wisdom, confidence and learning. Lord Dattatreya is associated with optimism and growth which includes mental and spiritual growth. Performing the Dattatreya

Puja cultivates wisdom and unique qualities in the worshiper. It also gives purity, self-confidence, faith and support. The devotees of Jay Shankar Seva Mandal of Ahmednagar, Maharashtra performed Maha Dutta Yajna for Lord Dattatreya using a maximum number of fire pits and in the process, set a record under the prestigious India Book of Records (IBR).

The devotees and priests of Jay Shankar Seva Mandal of Ahmednagar used a total of 1111 fire pits (havan kund) to perform the Dattatreya Puja at Shri Sadguru Narayan Maharaj Dutt Sansthan Trust in Kedgaon, Daund, Pune. The ritual was performed between 9 am to 1 pm on the auspicious occasion of the 138th birth anniversary of Shri Sadguru Narayan Maharaj on May 26, 2023.

The priests of the seva mandal explained that human life runs on the philosophy of Yajna from birth to the end. In our culture, conceiving (garbhdhan) is a kind of Yajna and so is the funeral (anteyeshti). There are three root meanings of the word Yajna, i.e. to worship (dev poojan), to harmonize (sangatikaran), and

to bestow (daan). Yajna is being used for different purposes for spiritual or materialistic desires. The fire pits used for the Maha Datta Yajna at Kedgaon, Daund, Pune (Maharashtra) were made according to strict mathematical measurements. Vedic literature describes in detail about the types, sizes, shapes and construction of the havan kund.

The Maha Datta Yajna was performed to celebrate the 138th birth anniversary of Shri Sadguru Narayan Maharaj, who was born in Bagalkot, Karnataka. His early childhood was full of difficulties and calamities. He lost his parents at a very early age and was more or less looked after by his grandmother. But the family disputes prevailed and he had to leave his house in search of real peace. He stayed in solitude in a Shiva temple and his devotion to Lord Dattatreya protected him from calamities. It is said that while he was staying alone in the Shiva temple, a tiger used to visit the place without doing any harm to Maharaj. His sufferings in life advanced his faith in Lord Dattatreya.

Largest cake on display

With its lively colours and creative design, a cake can undoubtedly make any occasion more fun and enjoyable. Of course, there is nothing more special than sharing a sweet and tasty confection with your beloved guests. The food you bring to the table shows the depth of your happiness. While an ordinary party only includes a starter, the main dishes, dessert, and some drinks, an extraordinary celebration almost always has a delicious and delightful cake. When there’s a cake on the table, you can surely expect a more vibrant celebration. With the same thoughts, Aadhar Berojgar Seva Sahakari Sanstha Ltd, of Mumbai, Maharashtra prepared a large cake to celebrate the birth anniversary of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, the main architect of the Indian Constitution.

In the process of cake making, the organisation created history and set a record for the ‘largest cake baked to commemorate Ambedkar’s birthday’. Since it was the 132nd birth anniversary of the popular leader, a cake weighing 132 kg and

measuring 16 feet in length and 3 feet in width, was made and cut at Samaj Mandir Hall, Subhash Nagar, Chembur East, Mumbai on April 14, 2023. The attempt was recognised by the India Book of Records.

Local corporator Asha Marathe, Mumbai Bank’s Director Nandkumar Katkar, VBA Party’s Mumbai President Parameshwara Ranshur, senior social worker Baban Gaikwad and Kashmira Shah graced the occasion.

The record for the largest cake baked to commemorate Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar’s birth anniversary was set by Aadhar Berojgar Seva Sahakari Sanstha. The cake weighing 132 kg was made and cut in Mumbai.

The celebratory cake was totally homemade with Pineapple crush prepared at home and only the baking part was done at a local bakery. All procedures like mixing and beating were done by the team, comprising a few experts like Poonam Dagaliya, founder, Sweettella; Rekha Jain, founder, Lavie Cakes; and Itanshi Bamb, founder, Ish Bakes who guided the volunteers. After making the

crush, the baking was done, followed by whipping the cream and decorating the cake. The entire celebratory function was moderated by poet Ganesh Mirgule.

Rahul Baban Gaikwad, President of Aadhaar Berojgar Seva Sahakari Sanstha Ltd told the India Book of Records magazine that initially no one was willing to give them such a big space to make an extra large cake. A huge amount was quoted for an AC hall, hence a non-AC hall was arranged at an affordable fee. The whole planning was started a month before the main event. The programme was attended by the cake-making team, orchestra players, media persons, police personnel, and people from all walks of life. “Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar has blessed our nation with a good Constitution, which takes care of every caste and community. We came up with this idea of cake making to celebrate Babasaheb’s 132nd birth anniversary with something different,” he said.

Aadhar Berojgar Seva Sahakari Sanstha Ltd, Mumbai strives to provide employment opportunities to unemployed people as well as take care of social and environmental issues also. The organisation spreads awareness of cleanliness and planting trees on barren land. Members of the organisation were extremely happy on achieving a new record for making and displaying the largest cake in the name of Dr Ambedkar.

The Climbing Expedition

The team of Hindavi Swarajya Pratishthan (HSP) from Pune, Maharashtra, is instrumental in organizing fort conservation events in Maharashtra. Nitin Bhoite, Founder of HSP, along with his trekking partner Amol Dhawale, Secretary of HSP, frequently visits various forts in Maharashtra, setting up different records, while surveying the forts for conservation purpose as well. Having seen them making rigorous adventures like trekking, hiking and climbing attracted and inspired Shivam Vinayak Darwatkar of Pune, to join the team and perform similar activities. He approached the duo and requested them to allow him to contribute to the fort climbing expeditions.

are his favourite hobbies. However, setting the record was not an easy task for him, as he was lacking in stamina while climbing up the forts. Considering this drawback the HSP team made him do a lot of practice before making the actual attempt. The physical exercises helped the boy to build the required stamina to set up the record.

The HSP team planned the adventurous trip to the forts for Shivam and helped him at every step while visiting forts and setting up the record. Shivam made the record for ‘visiting the maximum number of forts in a day’ along with the team members including Nitin Bhoite, Pavan Shinde and Phale – all from the Hindavi Swarajya Pratisthan. The team started the expedition at 12.29 am on April 16, 2023, with Varugad Fort and completed it with Sinhagad Fort at 11.47 pm the same day, making it to the India Book of Records (IBR). They successfully visited 14 forts in a single day and it was a record!

Nitin Bhoite informed the India Book of Records magazine that Shivan, born on April 16, 2011, is a student of 7th standard. Playing cricket with his friends and venturing out for trekking

Planning the trip and making foolproof travel arrangements with proper backpacking was another challenge for Shivam. Since Sachin Ganjave, President of HSP, had exposure to international travels across 45+ countries, he helped Shivam in planning the itinerary for the record-setting attempt. Ganjave also supported Shivam by facilitating a dedicated vehicle and making sure of the availability of a driver for the day’s adventure. Shivam has a dream of being a mountaineer. He also wants to climb Mount Everest someday.

Some of the prominent forts which Shivam visited that day included Ajinkyatara Fort, Nandgiri, Sajjangad, Dategad, Vasantgad, Sadashivgad, Kamalgad, Kenjalgad and Sinhgad Fort. Shivan said, “The Nandgiri in Satara district has 3500 feet in height and there is only one way to reach the fort, that is via Dhumalvadi village. Climbing on the Vasantgad Fort was a memorable experience for me. The ancient hill fort is 47 km from Satara town and is one of the popular trekking places in Maharashtra. Overall the attempt was full of fun and adventure, which I can never forget.”

Over the frozen Zanskar River

Chadar Trek in Ladakh is a fascinating place to visit in winters. Apart from the apparent specialty of making the trekkers walk on a thick sheet of ice covering the Zanskar River, the Chadar Trek is also a major attraction for adventure seekers for the many fascinating and out-of-this-world sights that the trek brings across. Starting from the Magnetic Hill and the Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, the trek brings across natural wonders like frozen waterfalls, knee-deep snow and white sand, the epitome of a cold desert like Ladakh. Adventurers traverse through jaw-dropping scenery and bone-chilling climates. Can you imagine that a child can complete such a tough trek?

Rhythm Harlalka of Hyderabad, Telangana, is one such brave child who has set the record for being the fastest to complete Chadar Trek. Born on September 26, 2012, the child successfully completed the trekking expedition over the frozen Zanskar River in Ladakh in five days from January 8, 2023, to January 12, 2023, at the age of 10 years, 3 months and 17 days. The feat has got a proud mention in the India Book of Records.

Rhythm used to watch world record videos on the Internet and always wanted to make one. When his parents decided to go for the Chader Trek in Ladakh, he also got the opportunity and cracked it. It was his first trekking expedition. He was studying in grade 4 at Oakridge International School, Gachibowli, Hyderabad at that time. His father Manish Harlalka, a finance professional with Reckitt Benckiser, told the India Book of Records magazine that in the future Rhythm wants to be an Astronaut. The SOF International Mathematics Olympiad and

scientific videos fascinate him the most. However, currently he wants to focus on his studies more. He loves to play with his 6-year-old brother and also spends time watching YouTube videos on science, technology and various records.

Describing the trekking experience, Manish said, “It was a lifetime experience and a big achievement for us. The weather condition was challenging with temperature ranging from minus 10 to minus 25 degrees. Whatever came in between we overcame it. We walked in an extremely chilled environment, climbed two mountains as the river was not frozen in some patches and we had to walk on ridges also. Not only this, ours was the first group for the season to reach the destination. There were other groups who started before or along with us, but either returned or got delayed. The Chadar Trek needs good planning and physical preparations. Rhythm felt the loss of energy during acclimatization and also mountain sickness, which was taken care of by electrolyte powder.”

His mother, Gazal Harlalka, an investment advisor with ICICI Bank, says that both parents are proud to see their child’s determination and perseverance. “Like us, Rhythm also loves nature and travelling. That is why he insisted on going for Chadar Trek and very bravely completed it, which is otherwise a challenging destination to visit.” She recommends other parents to “believe in your kids’ ability and encourage them.”

The record for being the fastest to complete Chadar Trek was set by 10-years-old Rhythm Harlalka of Hyderabad, who completed the expedition over the frozen Zanskar River in Leh (Ladakh) in five days.

Hula hoop makes her spin

It was at the tender age of two years when she happened to watch a random dance video on television, wherein the dancer used a hula hoop ring. She instantly hooked to the visuals and clearly expressed her interest to try the hula hoop - a toy ring made of plastic that is swung around the waist, hands, or neck. She incessantly requested her parents to have the ring until they finally provided her with one. She started using and practicing it all by herself. We are talking about Aanvi Reema Saneesh of Kannur, Kerala, who is currently living in Dubai, UAE, with her mother and father. The girl has set a record of ‘performing the maximum number of hula hoop spins in one minute’. She did astonishing 195 hula hoop spins in one minute at the age of 5 years, 5 months and 14 days only, on March 9, 2023.

At present, she is studying in KG-II at Gems New Millennium School in Dubai, UAE. Her father is a computer engineer working in Dubai and her mother is also a computer engineer by qualification, but currently taking care of the kid and the household. Her mother said, “The process of participation in events and the happiness associated with winning and rewards had always motivated her since childhood. Her mother used to explain her the prestige and honour associated with the IBR tag and the process involved. The baby girl was quick to reciprocate her interest and the rest fell in place to achieve the record.”

How much hula hooping does she normally do? On a regular relaxed day when she is totally immersed in the process, she might carry on even for up to 20 minutes of continuous hula hooping. She can also perform much faster than the set record, but unfortunately, her mother could not capture those moments on camera properly. The main challenge was in achieving the right combination of interest in hula hooping with all the factors needed to shoot a good quality video clip. There were instances where the child performed better than expected, but the video quality was not up to mark. There were some instances when the video was satisfactory, but she would be extra playful and the final outcome was not worth keeping it.

The record for performing the maximum number of hula hoop spins in one minute was set by Aanvi Reema Saneesh of Kannur, Kerala, who performed 195 hula hoop spins in one minute at the young age of 5 years.

Aanvi loves to engage in painting, dancing, skating and hula hooping. She is a quick learner when it comes to some physical activity or sports like skating, dancing, etc. She likes to dance and paint more whenever she gets some free time. But occasionally her parents take her out for skating and hula hooping. She is also practicing Kalaripayattu, a form of martial art, at the beginner level. The child has also won a few prizes in sports activities in the school, like swimming gala, running and some sporty activities.

Saneesh told the India Book of Records magazine, “We believe that understanding the kids’ thoughts, interests, etc through observation of their behaviour and activities and friendly conversations will help the kids to strengthen their talent and the areas they are naturally good at. Give them all the opportunities and encourage them to the fullest, and most importantly never underestimate your kid. Respecting them as individuals and generating a friendship in parenting as well help develop a conversational environment at home which will, in turn, help them grow into a socially active and responsible being.”

Mailbag escape magic trick

Magic generally refers to the use of supernatural or paranormal powers to create illusions or perform tricks that seem to defy the laws of nature. In many cultures, magic is often associated with mysticism, spirituality, or religious practices. In India, magic has a long and varied history, with many different styles and traditions of magic existing across the country. Some of the most famous types of Indian magic include street magic, stage magic, and traditional folk magic.

As far as women magicians are concerned in India, the number is rare. Traditionally, magic being a male-dominated field, there have been very few female magicians in the country. Mekhla Nayak of Bengaluru, Karnataka, is one of the contemporary female magicians. She has got her name included in the Asia Book of Records for being the first female to perform the mailbag escape magic trick on stage.

She performed the ‘mailbag escape magic trick’ at Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala, Karnataka, on November 21, 2011, from 6 pm to 7.30 pm, wherein two people came from spectators and examined the canvas mailbag then locked her inside the bag using padlocks. The bag was covered with a curtain and she escaped in a flash and came among the spectators. Since then, Mekhala has done more than 100 successful shows. At that time she was known as Raksha Prabhu, but now she is Mekhala Nayak (her name was changed after marriage).

Being one of the very few women magicians in Karnataka, Mekhala has been performing magic shows ever since her primary school days. The little girl had no clue about magic until she went to a magic show in Calicut. Her uncle gifted her a self-learning magic book, from which she eventually learned a few simple tricks. Realizing their daughter’s craze for magic, her father Ratnakar Prabhu, and mother Rekha Prabhu sent her to a magic workshop held in Mangalore, conducted by Kudroli Ganesh.

The four-day workshop gave the girl enough confidence to perform magic on the stage. Mekhala feels indebted to BH Raju

of Belthagandy, who taught her many tricks. She learned a few tricks from Suvarna, Soorya, Gopi, and Junior Shankar as well. A science graduate from SDMC, Ujire, Dhakshina Kannada (Karnataka), now she also sells handicraft items through her company ‘Patu Crafts’.

Mekhala told the India Book of Records magazine that “My mother used to take me to all places for magic shows and also for learning. She supported me a lot. My brother (Karthik) used to assist me in my shows. I lost him four years back and now my kids (Megha and Dhruva) accompany me on stage. They are also keen to learn magic. I do conduct magic training camps and magic classes for children in the age group of 9 to 15 years. I am still doing magic shows. Being a woman, it was difficult to come forward and make a place for myself. In my early days, society was not ready to see a performance given by a girl. But my parents and brother supported me. After marriage, my husband (Prashanth N Manjeshwar) supported me to continue in my chosen field.”

It’s all about the mindset

Avtar Singh is running the Lifecare Foundation, a healthcare non-government organization (NGO), that manages 50 charitable diagnostic labs in Punjab and Haryana region. It is a technology-driven, large-scale laboratory known for highquality blood screening tests at the most affordable cost. On an average 1200 patients every day get benefitted from the charitable services. The NGO has organized more than 220 medical checkup camps in remote and rural areas in the region. The mission of the foundation is to promote preventive checkups at the most economic rates in order to keep society healthy.

Avtar was in the limelight recently when he created an India Book of Record for performing the maximum number of pushups in one minute. Born on September 3, 1984, Avtar Singh of Derabassi (Mohali District), Punjab, performed 145 push-ups in one minute. He says, “My journey from being bedridden, fighting the disease (acute arthritis), to standing fit, inspired me to set this record so that my story could motivate athletes and make people believe that everything is possible. Cardio, weight training and stretching are a regular part of my daily routine. Gym, diet, good sleep and social work keep me busy.”

Talking to the India Book of Records magazine, Avtar Singh said, “Rather than a challenge, I took this attempt as an opportunity which can motivate people in a way that if a person like me who was once permanently bedridden, fought the disease for a long period, and who now runs a large scale NGO in Punjab and Haryana, why they also can’t make it big and realize their dreams. To succeed in this record-making attempt of maximum push-ups, I just focused on my goal, practiced hard and ultimately achieved it. I just wanted to convey the message to the people that everything is possible with sheer determination and perseverance. Injuries, diseases, busy work schedules, etc are just excuses. All one needs to do is just get up from the bed, start working, stop thinking too much, and just do it. It’s all about mindset.”

Fitness experts say that push-up builds both upper-body and core strength. It has many modifications; beginners can start

The record for performing the maximum number of push-ups in one minute was set by Avtar Singh of Mohali, who performed 145 push-ups in 1 minute, despite the fact that he was suffering from acute arthritis.

with easier versions, while more advanced exercisers can use a challenging variation. One can do the push-up as part of a bodyweight exercise session, a circuit training workout, or a strength workout. In daily life, one often needs to push against objects, from doors to shopping carts.

The functional fitness one develops with push-ups provides the strength needed to perform these movements. Working the stabilizer muscles around the shoulders can help protect the person from injuries. A 2019 study also found that people who can do 40 push-ups have fewer cardiovascular disease problems than those who cannot complete 10 push-ups. Pushups can be used as a measure of upper body fitness, allowing you to assess whether you need to be doing more to keep your upper body in good working condition.

The ‘ShonaIntelligent Ma’

Angelina Dubey of Kolkata, West Bengal, has got appreciation from the India Book of Records for reciting too many things at the tender age of 3 years and 4 months on May 27, 2023. The child recited 12 English poems, and 17 Bengali poems, sang the National Song, one motivational song, recalled the names of months in a year, 20 parts of the body, 20 national symbols, 20 animals, names of 15 new and 17 old Indian cricketers, 8 family members, 15 colours, 16 fruits, 10 flowers, 12 birds, 10 vegetables, 8 water animals, identified 7 shapes, and answered 50 GK related questions in a single video.

The baby girl loves horror stories. She can eat food easily while listening to horror stories. Otherwise, feeding her anything is a difficult task. She has difficulty digesting milk and vomits out most other eatables. Doctors say that she is too small to start the treatment. Wherever she sits, her only demand is to give her a pencil and a piece of paper. She keeps drawing different shapes of her choice. Sketching flowers, trees, birds and a few other objects are her favourite subjects.

Her mother, Sunanda Dubey said that she learned about the India Book of Records through Facebook. After learning about the procedure, she started preparing the child. It took one year to complete the preparations. By the way, Angelina herself is a fast learner. She listens to everything attentively and memorizes on the first or second chance only. She has started her schooling and has joined the Swami Pranavananda Vidyapeeth in the Lower Nursery section. She can read and speak all alphabets from Bengali to English.

Sunanda further said that she brought her many types of picture books and toys. Whenever she gets a chance, she teaches her with the help of books and pictures. Aunt (Mausi) Sanjukta loves Angelina very much and takes care of her. When she came to know that Angelina’s name has appeared in the India Book of Records, tears started rolling from her eyes. Her son, Satyabrata (21), has done BSc Honors in Mathematics and loves to play with Angelina.

Angelina also enjoys the company of her Naani, who calls her ‘Rai’. Rai was the name of a Gopika of Lord Shri Krishna. Angelina has a few other names too. Everyone calls her by different names. Father, Prabir Kumar Dubey, is a government employee and calls her ‘Shona Ma’. Brother Satyabrata calls her ‘Mum-Mum’ and the neighbors fondly call her ‘Doll’. Children tease her by calling her Angelina Jolie.

Satyabrata said, “When the baby girl was just 6 months old, they realized that she was not an ordinary child. She learns everything by listening and grasps very quickly. Her mother tells her poems and stories. It was ry difficult to shoot her video for the IBR because she is very fickle and does not sit in one place for long.”
