Dear Readers,

India’s traditional medicine systems are getting attention globally. A hallmark of this was seen at the 3rd World Congress on Traditional Medicine held recently in New Delhi, where Dr. Biswaroop Roy Chowdhury, Editor-in-Chief of India Book of Records, presented simple remedies for cancer and exposed the modern medical systems that befool the patients. Read these details in the cover story, while the second cover story gives an interesting account of a state-level book launch, that narrates the life story of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

There is an important announcement that we are going to hold a Convocation@IBRoffice to felicitate the record holders in the grand office of the India Book of Records, in which their achievements will be celebrated. The first convocation is to be held on September 9, 2023. Recently we honoured Radio Manav Rachna at Manav Rachna Educational Institutes, Faridabad for its 150-hour non-stop live show on Sustainability.

Inside you will find a few other interesting stories too, like a Pune-based couple travelling across the country with their pet dog to spread awareness about their Spit Free India movement; and a gentleman from Tamil Nadu who’s been running every day for five years now. The story of the senior citizens’ pilgrimage of 4500 elders from the Patidar community of Gujarat is also quite interesting. Also read, the inspiring story of a woman who was once suffering from asthma and now doing aggressive push-ups.

After reading such amazing stories of record makers, maybe you too will get the idea of doing something different.

Spit-Free India Movement

Priti Raja and Raja Narasimhan, co-founders of the Sare Jahan Se Acha Foundation, believe 50% of respiratory diseases can be stopped from spreading if people stop spitting in public spaces. Having served MNC corporates, this entrepreneur couple has been working on their key project – the Spit-free India Movement. They spread awareness about the dangers of spitting in public places. They urge the people who do not spit to get involved and start telling others not to

spit in public spaces. Narasimhan (58) set the record for the ‘maximum number of states and union territories visited by road to raise awareness about public hygiene’ under the India Book of Records (IBR).

The couple has been pursuing this cause relentlessly in Pune, Maharashtra, since 2010 by engaging students from schools and colleges. Pune Municipal Corporation has been supporting this initiative too. Activities like public wall painting, street plays, sessions for secondary school students, and events on special occasions are some of the campaigns they organise regularly. In March 2021, they decided to take the campaign across India and decorated their Renault Duster car with anti-spitting messages in various languages. They started the pan India drive on February 14, 2021, with the theme – Love your City, Love your Country.

Narasimhan and Priti along with Cara (pet dog), drove through coastal Maharashtra and visited tourist places like Mahabaleshwar, Panchgani, Sangli, and Satara. Their campaign involves a street play, Zumba, game, speeches, sloganeering,

administering an oath by the local chief guest, flag off of the vehicle, and a 45 minutes package wherever they go. The couple covered a distance of 32,000 km across 20 states and 2 Union Territories of India in 8 phases from March 2021 till February 2023.

Narasimhan told the India Book of Records magazine that each time they stopped, the car attracted the attention of the general public who were curious to know about the campaign and acknowledged their efforts. Unfortunately, Covid-19 second wave put a halt for 3 months. After getting both vaccines, they started the second phase of their campaign in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. DGP of Karnataka, CP of Bengaluru, and Additional Commissioner of Bengaluru Municipal Corporation participated in flag-off events. The third phase drive was to Nashik, Dhule, Indore, and Ujjain, which was completed in September 2021. The phase 4 drive to Surat, Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Vapi, and Udaipur was completed in October.

The 5th phase drive started in November 2021, when they headed to Solapur, Hyderabad, Guntur, Vijayawada, Vizag,

2 India Book of Records | September 2023

Bhubaneswar, and Kolkata. In West Bengal, they visited Shantiniketan, Joka, and Garden Reach. In the 6th phase, they covered Ajmer, Pushkar, New Delhi, Gurugram, Faridabad, Chandigarh, Shimla, Dehradun, Rishikesh, Haridwar, Lucknow, Agra, Gwalior, Indore, and Nashik. They coordinated with like-minded organisations, schools, colleges, industries, and associations for a campaign in each of the cities to spread the dangers of spitting in public. They covered Goa in June 2022 as phase 7. The phase 8 drive to Tamil Nadu and Kerala started on January 24, 2023. They had events in Coimbatore, Kochi, Madurai, Tiruchirapalli, Tanjore, Kumbakonam, and Salem. They book pet-friendly hotels before starting each leg of the journey. In the 9th phase, they drove to Srinagar, Drass, Kargil, and Leh. The 10th phase may cover North East in September. “TB, Pneumonia, Influenza, and Swine Flu can be controlled if we change our attitude towards public hygiene”, said Priti Raja.

SpeedEndurance Record

As part of the 24-hour speed endurance challenge, a milestone of 3,657.92 km was achieved by EVO India magazine at NATRAX in Pithampur, Madhya Pradesh – Asia’s longest highspeed track. Thus, the record for maximum distance covered in 24 hours on a motorcycle was set and the magazine’s name got into the India Book of Records. A team of riders rode the motorcycle – TVS Apache RR310 fitted with Apollo Alpha H1 Tyres, continuously for 24 hours, starting on July 2, 2023, at 10 am and ending on July 3 at 10 am, stopping only for rider change and refuelling, clocking 152.2 kmph average speed during the attempt.

Exactly 20 years ago, in September 2003, the very first 24-hour speed endurance records were attempted in India. The most powerful Indian motorcycle at that time, the

Hero Honda Karizma, set a record of 2525 km over 24 hours at the VRDE test track and this record stood strong for 20 years. Then last year the Harley-Davidson Sportster S broke this record by going 3141 km in 24 hours. Breaking a 1250 cc imported motorcycle’s record with an Indian bike was a big challenge. Another target was to do it with one set of tyres. Apollo Tyres accepted the challenge to put their tagline ‘Go the distance’ to

the ultimate test with the Alpha H1 tyres. The bike of choice was the TVS Apache RR 310.

Sirish Chandran, Editor of EVO India told the India Book of Records magazine, “Not only were we aiming to shatter the 20-year-old national record, but we were determined to achieve this feat on an Indian motorcycle, with Indian tyres gripping the asphalt, on an Indian test track. What we were confident of was

17 India Book of Records | September 2023

that the NATRAX would make for the safest venue for attempting a record of this kind. Spread over 3000 acres in Pithampur near Indore, this is Asia’s largest automotive proving ground and right up there among the best in the world. Prior to attempting the actual record, we held a 12-hour trial run at NATRAX. This test run gave us a realistic idea of what to expect when we did the full 24 hours.”

Apollo Tyres, who have a permanent facility at the NATRAX, gave their full support. TVS Racing had their core racing team at the event and they took care of the three bikes and all the pit stops. The riding team comprised Apollo Tyres’ testing and validation engineers Alessandro Abate and Abson Varghese. Other members of the riding crew included Sirish Chandran,

Aatish Mishra, Karan Ramgopal, Mandar Sawant, Aravind Ganesh, Lokesh Prabhu, Vengatesh Kannan, Manoj Naveen, Padmanaban, Karamjeet, Rohith Ashok, Deepak and Aishwarya Pissay.

Each rider was riding from tank to tank stopping for fuel every hour and 10 minutes, by which point the bike would have run for around 167 km. This ride was challenging on both man and machine but this was further amplified as the sun began to set. As night fell, one could barely see ahead of the beam of the headlight. To remedy this as much as possible, Bike N Biker sent over a set of auxiliary lights for each motorcycle. As the clock struck 10 on the morning of July 3, a new record was made.

The Epic of Spirituality

Agrand devotional cultural festival featuring artists from across India was held at Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple in Mangalagiri (Guntur district), Andhra Pradesh. The Guru Purnima festival, known as Muthyala Vahanaotsavam, was held on July 3, 2023, in collaboration with devoted philanthropists of the region. Anga Upendra Varma (34), the festival organiser, had already announced that the event will make history by showcasing various traditional and cultural artists performing temple music, dance, and other art forms simultaneously, marking the auspicious occasion of Guru Purnima. His words came true and the event was recognised by the India Book of Records (IBR).

The celebration, which involved 1200 members from 30 different bands, musical groups, and dance troupes, showcased a continuous 20-minute performance in an attempt to set the record. The goal of the Muthyala Vahanaotsavam was to promote spirituality through a harmonious blend of traditional music, dance, and temple customs that are deeply rooted in Indian culture. The event brought together renowned bands, musical groups, and dance troupes from several states across India.

Anga Upendra Varma, the festival organiser, said, “The event showcased the rich diversity of traditional music, dance, and

cultural expressions from different regions of the country. One of the unique features was the inclusion of tribal music, dance, and bands from the Telugu region. Each team consisted of a minimum of 10 to 100 members. The festival also featured captivating performances by Bharatanatyam, Kathakali, Thirakali, and Kalimatha dance troupes adding to the allure and excitement of the event.”

The theme of the programme was ‘The Epic of Spirituality’. The Sridevi Bhudevi Sametha and Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy were taken out on the Mutyapu Pandiri Vahanam in a procession through the streets. Special pujas were performed and public representatives, endowment department officials, and devotees attended the programme in large numbers.

The Mangalagiri, an auspicious hill, is one of the eight important Mahakshetrams (sacred places) in India, where Lord Vishnu manifested himself. These places include Sri Rangam, Srimushnam, Naimisam, Pushkaram, Salagamadri, Narayanasramam, Venkatadri, and Thothadri (Mangalagiri). It is said that Goddess Lakshmi did a meditation on this hill. There are three Narasimha Swamy temples in Mangalagiri. One is Panakala Narasimha Swamy on the hill. Another one is Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy at the foot of the hill, and the third one is Gandala Narasimha Swamy at the top of the hill.

The record for the maximum number of teams to perform on Guru Purnima was set by Anga Upendra Varma of Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, wherein 30 teams performed at Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple premises.

From all directions, Mangalagiri Hill looks like an elephant. There is an interesting legend to show as to how the mountain came into existence. Pariyatra, an ancient king had a son Hrasva Srungi, who visited all the holy and sacred places to regain normal bodily stature and finally, he visited Mangalagiri and performed penance for three years. All the deities advised him to stay at Mangalagiri and continue the penance in praise of Lord Vishnu. Pariyatra came to take back his son to his kingdom. But Hrasva Srungi took the shape of an elephant to become the abode of Lord Vishnu, who is locally known as Panakala Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy.

Meet Nallangu Bhavya Hasini of Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, a teenager who is determined to promote India’s rich culture and traditions through Bharatanatyam, the classical dance form. The young girl started learning Bharatanatyam at the tender age of six from E K Kamakshi and Subrahmanyam with absolute dedication. Bhavya, who hails from a middle class family, had been giving three hour nonstop Bharatanatyam performances at major temples, including Sabari Kshetram, Mulasthaneswara, Ranganatha and Rajarajeswari temples of Andhra Pradesh, during the last two years, winning huge applause from the audiences.

She recently entered her name into the prestigious pages of the India Book of Records (IBR). Bhavya set the national record by performing Bharatanatyam continuously for four hours at

the Rebala Lakshmi Narasimha Reddy Town Hall in Nellore. She is the daughter of Nallangu Sunil Kumar, Deputy Executive Engineer with the Andhra Pradesh Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (APSPDCL), she is also focused on her studies. Not only this, she is striving hard to get a black belt in karate to be equipped in self defense. She is also good at sketching and painting.

“My aim is to spread Sanatana Dharma through Bharatanatyam. I want to use the classical dance forms as a bridge between India and the rest of the world. It is our responsibility to preserve our rich culture for future generations,” said the young achiever from Nellore. The record setting dance performance event at the Nellore Town Hall on July 8, 2023, was organised by Smaller Choices. The dance performance began at 4 pm and

30 India Book of Records | September 2023

continued till 8 pm. Bhavya’s age was 12 years, 7 months, and 28 days at the time of the record making.

Her next target is to perform a Bharatanatyam recital while making Giri Pradakshina in Arunachalam to further prove her mettle. “After observing her keen interest in Indian culture, we started providing her classical dance training. Now, she is keen on promoting Indian culture on various platforms in a big way,” said her mother Chenchu Lakshmi, an office assistant in Postal Department.

It is worth mentioning here that Bharatanatyam is a major form of Indian classical dance that originated in Tamil Nadu. It is one of the eight widely recognised Indian classical dance forms expressing South Indian religious themes and spiritual ideas, particularly of Shaivism and in general of Hinduism. Bharatanatyam, the state dance form of Tamil Nadu, is the oldest classical dance tradition in India. It contains different types of ‘Baanis’, a Tamil term used to describe the dance technique and style specific to a Guru or School. These are named according to the village of the guru. The dancers display sophisticated gestures of hands, eyes, and facial muscles.

The record for performing Bharatnatyam for the longest duration was set by Nallangu Bhavya Hasini of Nellore, who performed Bharatanatyam nonstop for 4 hours on July 8 at Rebala Lakshmi

Narasimha Reddy Town Hall.

This dance form remained exclusive to the Hindu temples during the 19th century. It was banned by the colonial British government in 1910, but the Indian community protested against the ban and expanded its performance outside temples in the 20th century.

Hula Hoop on roller skates

She has been a hula hoop fan since she was three years old. In this game, she has been experimenting and always learning new tricks. From the early days, she has been performing on various platforms. Although she likes dancing, painting, socialising, and much more, most of all she likes hula hoop and dance. Presently she studies in class IV at Springdales School, Dhaula Kuan, New Delhi. When she is not in school, she learns skating at Perfect Skating Club and gets hula hoop training at The Talent Library, Rajouri Garden, Delhi. She takes great joy in creative pursuits and enjoys various art and crafts related activities.

We are talking about a girl named Aaradhya Gupta, who performed the maximum number of hula hoop spins in the Lasso position (ring above her hands) on roller skates. This girl did 3592 hula hoop spins in 30 minutes at the age of 8 years, 7 months, and 17 days, on June 5, 2023, and got her name entered into the prestigious India Book of Records (IBR). Very soon, on October 18, 2023, she will turn 9.

Aaradhya says, “I love skating. I know how to balance with adjustable, quads and line skates. I have participated in many skating tournaments and have been winning mostly. Talking about the hula hoop, I have been doing it for the last 6 years. This game supports me a lot in times of need. Whenever I feel a bit of stress, I pick up the hula hoop ring and start dancing. It is a very relaxing exercise.”

When we asked how did she come up with the the idea of setting a record, Aaradhya replied, “As I said earlier, hula hoop and skating, both are my passion. Therefore, I decided to do a hula hoop with skates and thought of practicing more to set a record. I practiced continuously for three months to turn the dream of this record into a reality. My entire focus was to touch the timing of 30 minutes. I must tell you that spinning a hula hoop with skates is a bit tiring.”

Aaradhya’s father, Saurabh Gupta, is a chartered accountant, and her mother, Chandni Gupta, runs an educational institute.

The record for performing the maximum number of hula hoop spins (a total of 3,592) in the Lasso position (above hand) on roller skates was set by Aaradhya Gupta of Delhi at the age of 8 years, 7 months, and 17 days.

Her younger brother also likes to play with the hula hoop. She aspires to scale new heights in life and intends to create newer and bigger records. Apart from sports, she is also a genius in her studies and participates in various quiz competitions. She has a strong sense of fairness and justice. She doesn’t like when people cheat.

Chandni Gupta told the India Book of Records magazine that she is proud of Aaradhya’s talent. She said, “Aaradhya is very smart and hardworking. She has a great sense of humour. She gets up early in the morning, takes a balanced diet, and socialises with everyone at home and in school. She takes interest in knowing new things and she is a very sensitive child. I am fortunate that I have got the opportunity to nurture and guide Aaradhya.”

Face the World campaign

Melasma, a condition in which brown patches appear on the face, can be due to hormonal changes during pregnancy or from sun exposure. Women are much more likely than men to develop this skin condition. The brown or grey-brown patches of melasma appear most often on the cheeks, forehead, nose, and chin. In women, melasma often fades on its own after pregnancy or after an affected woman stops taking contraceptive pills. Skinlightening creams can help remove melasma. A dermatologist can often diagnose melasma by looking closely at the patient’s face and neck. To get a close-up look, a dermatologist may use a specialised device like a Wood’s lamp or Dermatoscope. Placed on (or near) skin, these devices help the dermatologist see how deeply the darker pigment reaches into the layers of the skin.

Sometimes melasma can look like another skin condition. To rule this out, the dermatologist may perform a skin biopsy, which involves removing a small bit of skin. This skin sample can be taken safely and quickly during a normal workday. Melasma may go away on its own. This usually occurs when a trigger, such as pregnancy or medication, causes this condition. After delivery or stopping the medication, melasma can fade away on its own. However, melasma can also last for years, or even a lifetime. While melasma cannot harm the body, it’s understandable that many people want to treat it. In a bid to create

awareness among the masses, Zydus Healthcare Ltd. Mumbai, carried out a campaign called ‘Face the World’ and in the process, it created a big record, which got included in the India Book of Records and the Asia Book of Records together.

The record was placed in the category of ‘the maximum number of healthcare professionals (HCPs) taking a pledge during the Melasma awareness movement across the country. The campaign ‘Face the World’ started on April 1, 2023, and ended on May 30, 2023. A total of 18,737 HCPs, including medical

practitioners and chemists, took the pledge in online mode to join the cause during the Melasma Awareness Movement organised in all parts of the country. To execute the campaign, a portal was created to take pledges from HCPs located in different parts of India.

The pledge was to spread awareness among the patients and the masses in general. In the campaign, people were informed that a dermatologist should be consulted once the sign of melasma is visible on the face. The dermatologist will create a treatment plan tailored to the patient’s needs. Before the treatment is decided, skin tone, the depth of melasma in the skin, and melasma triggers are considered first. The treatment plan may consist of sun protection, as it causes the skin to make more pigment, which can darken existing melasma and cause new patches.

Human Flag Formation

The young volunteers of the Jain Swetambar Terapanth Dharam Sangh are a community that is small in number but big on deeds. Terapanth Kishore Mandal is a body organised under the Akhil Bhartiya Terapanth Yuvak Parishad. At present, there are over 100 branches of Kishore Mandals running at local levels. Each branch consists of boys in the age group of 15 to 21 years, working towards the upliftment and betterment of society. Currently, the total count of such young volunteers in the country has reached more than 4000, and it is growing day by day.

A total of 1085 young volunteers from all over the country came together at 6 am and stood in a formation at Nandan Van in Mumbai in the presence of HH Acharaya Mahashraman to form the Jain Flag on July 30, 2023. The formation of the human Jain flag was a special event, which created a record under the Asia Book of Records (ABR). The record has been registered in the name of Terapanth Kishore Mandal Axis, Akhil Bharatiya Terapanth Yuvak Parishad. The record title reads like this: A record set for the largest human Jain flag formation.

The volunteers were sitting on a square-shaped ground, holding colourful umbrellas in their hands. Singing the song – Hum sab Jain hain Mahavir Janak Kalyanak, they stood up and opened their umbrellas. Their sitting arrangement was well planned and the umbrellas seen from a drone camera presented a picture of the Jain flag. The activity created history and made a place for itself in the ABR pages. The Asia Book of Records adjudicator, Seema Manikothe, reviewed the claim and after finding everything in place she announced the record

being made. In the end, Seema Manikothe presented the ABR certificate and the medal to the organisers in the presence of all the office bearers and the participants at Nandan Van in Mumbai, Maharashtra.

It is worth mentioning here that the flag of Jainism has five colours — white, orange, red, yellow, green, and blue. The five colours of the Jain flag represent the Panca Parameṣṭhi and the five vows. The Swastika’s four arms symbolise the four realms in which rebirth occurs according to Jainism: humans, heavenly beings, hellish beings, and non-humans. The three dots on the top represent the three jewels mentioned in ancient texts – correct faith, correct understanding, and correct conduct, believed to lead towards spiritual perfection.

As far as the Swetambar Terapanth is concerned, it is a reformist religious movement founded by Acharya Bhikshu, who is also known as Swami Bhikanji Maharaj. Acharya Bhikshu was formerly a Sthanakvasi saint and had initiation by Acharya Raghunatha, but he had differences with his Guru on several aspects of the religious practices of Sthanakvasi ascetics. Hence, he left the Sthanakvasi sect with the idea of correcting the practices of Jain monks and founded a new order. Swetambar Terapanth belongs to the Amurtipujaka lineage of Jainism, which means that the order does not have temples or idols. The order comprises over 1000 saints and nuns in a very organised structure under the current Acharya Mahashramana.

Push-ups to overcome Asthma

The record for performing the maximum number of pushups in one minute was set by Shaleni Banthia (49) of Delhi. She performed 67 push-ups in one minute on June 16, 2023, getting her name into the India Book of Records (IBR). Born in Sardar Shahar, Rajasthan, and brought up in Kolkata, in a humble Marwari family, she used to paint a lot as a child, although she could not pursue it professionally. Her grandfather always wanted her to be independent and educated. She got married at 21 and shifted to Delhi. Being a severe asthmatic patient it was always difficult to cope with her health until she started yoga and then eventually fitness, which became her passion over the years and she recovered from asthma.

She started her fitness journey in 2015 with a basic setup at home only. Push-ups were the way to start, as developing inner strength was important as a foundation before lifting weights. She focused on her form with the help of the trainer and then eventually increased the intensity over time. Push-ups were always the go-to exercise along with some basic warmups and body weight exercises as it could be done even in the busiest of schedules and she did not have to compromise on her health even if she was not being able to do a full workout.

Shaleni Banthia told the India Book of Records magazine, “I do the basic weight lifting along with High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), cardio, cross-fit, and kickboxing. I have also tried Arial Yoga and self-defense. Now as a professional Fitness

Coach, I understand the importance of the overall physical development of the body and how a person, especially women, should focus on their overall well-being. When I started out, I used to be on a very strict diet which basically excluded all processed foods and sugar. It was important to do so as I had to change the metabolism of my body and was also recovering from Asthma. After years of doing so, I now follow a balanced diet which includes basic cooked food, a lot of vegetables and fruits, with a couple of cheat meals in a week.”

Push-ups are the most basic exercise for anyone. “When I attempted for the record, I gradually increased the intensity. It does not happen overnight. I also got an opportunity to work more on my bodyweight training and increase my overall endurance strength. I also modified my diet to increase my body strength. If you get the basics and the foundation strong, the preparation is not difficult. You just need to be dedicated enough and not lose motivation. Constant improvement is my goal. I want to keep pushing myself. Also, as a fitness coach, I want my clients to follow always about believing in making people believe in wonderful coaches who throughout the journey. I am, and want to keep same. Help people better, fitter themselves.”

Mass migration to Canada

Even as the Kerala government makes efforts to address the issue of mass migration of students in the higher education sector, the trend continues unabated, and on a large scale. An event held in Kochi, Kerala under the aegis of Santamonica Study Abroad Pvt Ltd, an overseas education facilitator, witnessed the largest number of students migrating from a single country to a single destination in a single intake. A staggering total of 7236 students were all set to fly out to Canada. This once again highlighted the significant exodus of students to foreign countries, which poses serious challenges for the higher education institutions in the state and the country.

The overseas education facilitator created a record for the largest pre-departure briefing given to students and got its name registered with the India Book of Records (IBR) and the Asia Book of Records (ABR) together. The 7236 visa-holder students for Canada assembled at the Rajiv Gandhi Sports Centre (Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium), Kochi to receive the predeparture briefing from the Santamonica professionals about the culture and traditions of the country they were about to visit on July 29, 2023.

Denny Thomas Vattakunnel, Chairman and Managing Director, Santamonica Study Abroad Pvt Ltd, said, “Canada is a major study abroad destination, due to the ease of getting permanent resident status and the huge number of jobs available there owing to the large number of manufacturing units based along the border producing products for the US market. The group of students going abroad was comprised of both who had completed 10+2 courses and also degrees. The ratio of students who go abroad for higher studies after completing 10+2 and graduation is 50:50. All of them wanted to do diploma courses. Another attraction that Canada presents is that the courses offered are job-oriented. These courses are tailor-made to feed the workforce requirement in each state of the country.”

It is worth mentioning here that diplomas in technical subjects like computer science are very much in demand when it comes to employment in Canada. A very small percentage of students

opt for research and postgraduate courses. Another factor that attracts students to Canada is the ease of moving across the border to the USA. Australia and currently, Sweden too have become big markets. With Sweden offering family visas, which has been stopped by the UK, the country is fast becoming a hot favourite among youth. Even European countries like Portugal and Balkan countries are finding takers.

According to Denny Thomas, overseas education is a complex and confusing process regardless of whether a student is looking for a master, bachelor, or diploma course. The process is highly competitive and requires high commitment and vigilance when choosing an overseas

education facilitator. Santamonica Study Abroad Pvt Ltd has been in this business for the past two decades, officially representing over 500 top-notch institutions worldwide. It provides coaching for IELTS, PTE, TOEFL, and other preparatory courses.

Hepatitis B, a viral infection that infects the liver and can cause both acute and chronic disease, is preventable with a vaccine. The virus is most commonly transmitted from mother to child during birth and delivery, in early childhood, as well as through contact with blood or other body fluids during mating with an infected partner, unsafe injections, or exposures to sharp instruments. WHO estimates that 296 million people were living with chronic hepatitis B infection in 2019, with 1.5 million new infections each year. In 2019, hepatitis B resulted in an estimated 8,20,000 deaths, mostly from cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (primary liver cancer). Hepatitis B can be prevented by vaccines that are safe, available, and effective.

All babies should receive the hepatitis B vaccine within 24 hours after birth. This is followed by three doses of the hepatitis B vaccine at 0,1 and 6 months. Booster vaccines are not usually

required for people who have completed the three-dose vaccination series. The vaccine protects against hepatitis B for at least 20 years and probably for life. WHO organises the annual World Hepatitis Day campaign to increase awareness and understanding of viral hepatitis. divine music Celebration of a

For the past 50 years, my grandfather and now my father and uncles are carrying forward the tradition of singing in Yadagirigutta (Yadadri), a divine abode of Lord Narasimha Swamy. During the Bramhothsavam, the Lord along with His consorts and other Devathas are invited and later bid adieu through singing kirtans in several programmes, called Devatha Avahnam and Devatha Udavaasana, said Kalyani Mudumba (43), founder of Kalyani school of music, Bloomington, Illinois, USA. She has created a record for the maximum number of participants singing Carnatic classical songs in different languages. The event, Ashotthara Shatha Sankeertana Archana, took place at The Hindu Temple, Bloomington-Normal in Illinois on October 8, 2022.

There were 27 talented participants from two continents who mesmerised the audience with 108 soul-stirring songs by 30 composers in 6 languages (online and offline), which served as a fundraiser for a local temple. The activity gave Kalyani a proud mention in the India Book of Records (IBR) and the Asia Book of Records (ABR) simultaneously. Kalyani, a vocal music teacher in the US, did her graduation in Accounting and Business/

Commerce from Osmania University, Hyderabad. Then she completed her Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Symbiosis Centre for Management and Human Resource Development, Pune, Maharashtra.

Kalyani is a South Indian Carnatic vocalist, teacher, and composer with more than 20 years of musical experience. She has rendered children’s rhymes through CVS 3D Rhymes, a global hit, and sung a few title songs for Indian serials. Additionally, she is an author who published two books and has translated several books into English along with publishing articles in several magazines and social media platforms. She also has been a judging panel member for the world’s largest county 4-H fair for the ‘Read and Write A Book’ category and an active volunteer in United Way. In addition to singing, she’s also a Bharatanatyam dancer who has performed in several schools and colleges in India.

Kalyani Mudumba said, “My heartfelt thanks to ABR and IBR for supporting me to promote the Indian Culture through this divine form of music. I commenced my musical journey under the guidance of Srimaan Mudumbai Lakshmana Charya Swamy, my

paternal grandfather. My humble salutations to him for guiding me in every musical endeavour.”

Carnatic music, known as Karnaṭaka saṅgitam in the South Indian languages, is a system of music commonly associated with Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. It is one of two main subgenres of Indian classical music that evolved from ancient Hindu texts and traditions, particularly the Samaveda. The main emphasis in Carnatic music is on vocal music; most compositions are written to be sung, and even when played on instruments, they are meant to be performed in a singing style.

Carnatic music is usually performed by a small ensemble of musicians, consisting of a vocalist, a melodic accompaniment (usually a violin), a rhythm accompaniment (usually a mridangam), and a tambura. Other typical instruments used in performances may include the ghatam, kanjira, morsing, venu

Coin collection for

Dr. Siddavatam

Subrahmanyam (70), a medical professional from Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, thinks the hobby of collecting unique things helps in gaining longevity. He started collecting national and international coins, currency notes, and postage stamps in 1995. Till the year 2011, this hobby remained limited, but after retirement, he began to devote more time and money to his collections. He holds the record for collecting maximum national and international coins and for this, his name has been entered in the India Book of Records. He has a total of 5616 coins, of which 2092 are national and 3524 are international.

A medical professional, Dr. Siddavatam Subramaniam completed his MBBS in 1978 from SV University, Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. For the first two years, he worked at JIPMER Hospital, Pondicherry. After that, he worked in rural areas (1979–81) and then joined the central government service (1981–83). During 1983-93, he worked under the Ministry of Health of Iran. After returning to India, he did a PG Diploma in ENT and worked in AP Medical Service from 1995-2011 as an ENT specialist. After retirement, he joined the Apollo Hospital Nellore and currently, he is with another hospital.

Dr. Subrahmanyam said in a conversation with India Book of Records magazine, “After my professional duties, I spent most of my time collecting unique objects and keeping everything in proper order. Earlier I used to spend hardly 10% of my earning on this hobby, but after retirement in 2011, I started spending more than 50% of my pension and salary on my collections. I displayed a part of my collection in 2016 after becoming the President of the Simhapuri Numismatic and Philatelic Association, Nellore. In March 2022, when the Indian Postal Department organised a virtual exhibition of postage stamps related to the freedom movement, under the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, my collection was also displayed.”

Initially, in 1995, he bought items for his collection from street vendors in Hyderabad and Chennai. Later, he started shopping

with some dealers. In the last two decades, he has participated in most of the exhibitions held in Hyderabad, Chennai, Coimbatore, and Kerala. He has been to the USA four times and spent time there with his daughters. During that period, he collected commemorative coins and 370 gold-plated postage stamps from exhibitions.

The ancient coins of India and the silver coins issued from Kolkata and Mumbai mints are of high value. The value of foreign commemorative silver coins is also quite high. He now has plenty of time to visit exhibitions and other places to see the collections. Apart from coins, he also owns 1607 currency notes, of which 607 are Indian and 1000 are foreign. Similarly, there are 5127 national and 16678 foreign stamps in his collection of 21805 stamps.

He is keen to continue his hobby of coin collecting, as it brings him immense joy and satisfaction. These collections provide information about the heritage and culture of India and some foreign countries. He advises his children to do the same. He tells people to pursue any hobby because it keeps the mind engaged. The hobby of collecting unique things can help achieve longevity.

Dubai-based value fashion chain, Max Fashion, has created a record for the largest flower-shaped installation designed from garments. The brand, which recently entered the Kochi markets in Kerala by opening its largest store in India, spanning over 25,000 sq ft of retail space, has got into the prestigious pages of the India Book of Records (IBR) and the Asia Book of Records (ABR) because of the unique installation.

The garment installation, titled ‘Max Vastakalam’, measuring 6400 sq ft (80/80) made from 9100 clothes, features a Kathakali face. It is one of its kind and a part of Onam celebrations. The making process of the installation started on July 26, 2023, and it was completed on July 27, 2023, using garments including jeans, t-shirts, shirts, etc. It was installed at Marine Drive Ground, Kochi on July 28, 2023. The installation became the talk of the town because of its unique shape and structure.

Sumit Chandna, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Max Fashion India, said, “We are elated to open our largest India store in ‘God’s own country’. With an expansive 25,000 sq ft area, people will be spoilt for choice. With the latest trends and fashion from across the globe, this is our Onam gift to Kerala.” The company has expressed gratitude to the IBR and ABR for recognising the largest flower-shaped installation in Kochi.

The Kathakali face featured in the installation has been a big draw of the visitors to the Marine Drive Ground in Kochi city. Actually, Kathakali is a major form of classical Indian dance – a ‘story play’ genre of art, but one distinguished by the elaborately colourful make-up and costumes of the traditional male actor-dancers. It is native to the Malayalam-speaking southwestern region of Kerala and is almost entirely practiced and appreciated by Malayali people.

Kathakali’s roots are unclear. The fully developed style of Kathakali originated around the 17th century, but its roots are in the temple and folk arts, such as

Krishnanattam and religious drama of the kingdom of the Zamorin of Calicut. A Kathakali performance, like all classical dance arts of India, synthesizes music, vocal performers, choreography, hand and facial gestures together to express ideas. However, Kathakali differs in that it also incorporates movements from ancient martial arts and athletic traditions of South India.

The Kathakali face ‘Max Vastakalam’ installation is featured at the Max Fashion store. It is an intricate and colourful arrangement of flowers laid on the floor like rangoli. The huge installation, made with more than 9000 clothes has been created by artist Dudu. The clothes from the assortment will be donated to children, through a non-governmental organisation (NGO). “We aimed to give consumers a reason to celebrate the festive season in style,” said Pallavi Pandey,

Beat the Plastic Pollution

While plastic has many valuable uses, we have become addicted to single-use plastic products, with severe environmental, social, economic, and health consequences. Around the world, more than one million plastic bottles are purchased every minute, while up to five trillion plastic bags are used worldwide every year. In total, half of all plastic produced

is designed for single-use purposes – used just once and then thrown away. Plastics including microplastics are now ubiquitous in our natural environment. They are becoming part of the Earth’s fossil record and a marker of the Anthropocene, our current geological era. They have even given their name to a new marine microbial habitat called the ‘plastisphere’.

to raise awareness in relation to reducing the use of plastic. The event not only made the students aware of the hazards caused by the mindless use of plastic in our day-to-day life, but also brought laurels to the institution in the shape of a national record from the India Book of Records (IBR). The record was for the ‘maximum number of students chanting a slogan in different languages together at the same venue’. A total of 271 students participated in the activity and chanted the slogan — Beat Plastic Pollution, in different Indian languages, including both state languages and spoken languages in the country on June 5, 2023, on the occasion of Environment Day.

The students stood outside of the school building in a group, holding wide white paper sheets in their hands, displaying these words: Beat Plastic Pollution, June 5, 2023, Christ College. Wearing the school uniform – a navy blue coat, white shirt, black trousers, and a tie, the students participating in the

record-setting activity, raised the slogan ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ in multiple Indian languages. The students raised the slogan in more than 200 languages, including Hindi, English, Bengali, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil, Gujarati, Urdu, Kannada, Odia, Malayalam, Punjabi, Assamese, Maithili, Kashmiri, Dogri, Konkani, Maghdhi, Haryanvi, Awadhi, Mewari, Pahari, Nepali, and more.

Rev. Fr. Jince George CMI, Principal, Christ College of Science & Management, says, “Rooted in values, strengthened with experience and drawing inspiration from St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara and abiding in the grace of Jesus Christ, the institution focuses on holistic development of the students to take up the challenges of tomorrow and to become global leaders with a vision of progressive society. We believe that change is not sudden but gradual. We are in the path of change with hard work, commitment, creativity, continuous improvement, and innovative thinking. A change which is value-based embedded with social sensitivity.”

Making the students aware of their surroundings and environment has been a priority of Christ College which motivated the management to hold the record-setting attempt. The college regularly encourages the students to have a questioning mind, be critical thinkers, and decision-makers, and be environment-sensitive apart from academic excellence. The college management thanked the IBR for the national recognition.

Musical Tribute to Mohammad Rafi

Kabir Shivaji Naiknaware (34), President of Ashwaghosh Art and Culture Foundation, Kolhapur, Maharashtra, entered the Asia Book of Records league by creating a record of a nonstop singing relay of his songs on the occasion of Late Mohd Rafi’s Memorial Day and Birth Centenary Year. This relay program of non-stop singing was organised on July 22, 2023, at the Shahu Smarak Bhawan auditorium located at Dussehra Chowk, Kolhapur. His claim was verified by Ashok Adak, Adjudicator of Asia Book of Records, who at the end of the programme felicitated Kabir Shivaji with a certificate and medal and

declared the record. Ashok Adak had specially reached Kolhapur from Pune for this event.

Kabir Shivaji Naiknaware did his BA in Classical Music and then the Diploma in Vocal Music from Shivaji University, Kolhapur. He is a musician by profession and gives full-time to the music industry. His main work is to organise concerts in different themed shows, birthday parties, family get togethers and shows of corporate companies. He has worked for various music albums and films. Salaam Samvidhan is one of his popular programmes,

58 India Book of Records | September 2023

through which he along with his team makes the common people aware of the Indian Constitution across the country.

The Ashwaghosh Art and Culture Foundation was established by him on March 17, 2017, with much fanfare in Kolhapur. His mission was to train budding artists in singing, acting, dancing and various cultural arts so that they can do substantial and important work in the field of music. Providing a platform for amateur artists and making them self-reliant is also one of the main goals and policies of this organisation.

In a conversation with the India Book of Records magazine, Kabir Shivaji Naiknaware said, “We wanted to pay tribute to Mohd Rafi Sahab in a unique way. A number of singers arrived from the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Goa. A total of 136 singers took turns singing famous songs of Late Mohd Rafi in their own style in a non-stop singing relay, which started at 10.30 am and ended at 10.30 pm on July 22, 2023, at Shahu Smarak Bhawan, Kolhapur.”

He further said that it is not that he organises such programmes only in the memory of Mohd Rafi, but also appreciates the work of many other famous singers. In fact, he himself is a versatile singer and has not confined himself to any particular style or genre. On asking what kind of preparations were done before the event, he said that preparations for this activity started six months ago and four months time was given for rehearsals. There was no formal introduction of any kind before the performances and only a gap of 15 seconds was kept between two singers. That is why this programme was called a Non-Stop Singing Relay. He plans to organise many such events in the future also.
