Cultural – Heritage Tourism in India Red Fort Complex, New Delhi The Red Fort Complex was built as the palace fort of Shahjahanabad – the new capital of the fifth Mughal Emperor of India, Shah Jahan. Named for its massive enclosing walls of red sandstone, it is adjacent to an older fort, the Salimgarh, built by Islam Shah Suri in 1546, with which it forms the Red Fort Complex. The private apartments consist of a row of pavilions connected by a continuous water channel, known as the Nahr-i-Behisht (Stream of Paradise). The Red Fort is considered to represent the zenith of Mughal creativity which, under the Shah Jahan, was brought to a new level of refinement. The planning of the palace is based on Islamic prototypes, but each pavilion reveals architectural elements typical of Mughal building, reflecting a fusion of Persian, Timurid and Hindu traditions The Red Fort’s innovative planning and architectural style, including the garden design, strongly influenced later buildings and gardens in Rajasthan, Delhi, Agra and further afield. The planning and design of the Red Fort represents a culmination of architectural development initiated in 1526 AD by the first Mughal Emperor and brought to a splendid refinement by Shah Jahan with a fusion of traditions: Islamic, Persian, Timurid and Hindu. The innovative planning arrangements and architectural style of building components as well as garden design developed in the Red Fort strongly influenced later buildings and gardens in Rajasthan, Delhi, Agra and further afield. The Red Fort has been the setting for events which have had a critical impact on its geo-cultural region. The Red Fort Complex, New Delhi entered the UNESCO world heritage list in 2007. ********* 4|P a g e

News from India 1. Why the world is betting high on India’s renewable energy sector “Three countries are leading the renewable energy revolution”, said a headline on the World Economic Forum (WEF) website, and hold your breath – the flags of China, US and India follow on a graphic, titled with the caption, “These three countries will account for two-thirds of global renewable expansion to 2022”. One can’t help but feel a moment of pride. The WEF article is based on a report by the International Energy Agency’s (IEA’s) Renewables Report 2017, which says that sharp cost reductions and improved policy support are paving the way for continued growth in the renewables sector in India...Read more… (Swati Kamal, Swarajya, Sat, 23 Jun, 08:07pm)

2. IIT scientists use eggshell membrane to generate electricity: Here's how Scientists from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur have used eggshell proteins to develop tiny devices that can harvest electricity from body movements, and could power wearable sensors and devices in future. Proteins found in eggshell membranes have piezoelectric properties, that is, under mechanical stress they produce electricity, researchers said. Bioinspired piezoelectric materials are considered to be an excellent energy harvesting source, since they are non-toxic and biocompatible....Read more… (PTI, DNA, Wed, 27 Jun, 04:46pm)

3. ‘Tubewell chachis’ become Bundelkhand’s messiahs A self-taught band of tribal women, armed with spanners and hammers, is going from village to village repairing tubewells in drought-hit Bundelkhand. The appear like messiahs in this parched land, where getting help is a hard as finding water, villagers say. They get calls from villages up to 50km away, and walk all the way under the scorching sun. With monsoon delayed and rivers and ponds shrinking, a single tubewell is often the lifeline of a cluster of hamlets, and these women keep it running. Seema, who leads the group, said: "The moment we get a message for repair, we set off immediately. There are no ifs and buts."...Read more… (TNN, Times of India, Sat, 23 Jun, 07:23pm )

4. Instead of tossing it back, 5,000 Indian fishermen now collect ocean plastic to build roads and prosperity While the rest of the world becomes more and more aware of plastic pollution, a group of 5,000 fishermen, who rely on the “Mother Sea” to survive, have taken it upon themselves to clean up the oceans – and use the tons of waste to repair their roads. In an interview with National Geographic, a local fisherman from the Indian city of Kollam explained how the sea has gotten more polluted over the years. Whenever he casts his nets, he “often comes up with more plastic than fish.” For a while, Xavier Peters and his peers had simply tossed all the trash back into the water, but later, after realizing the futility, began hauling it back to land. So far, they have collected a whopping 65 metric tons worth of trash. After urging a few of their local government agencies to help, they managed to facilitate the creation of a new recycling center – the first in the region...Read more… (John Large, Good News Network, Sun, 24 Jun, 05:08pm)

5. Introducing Kutch, India's best responsible shopping destination With artisan crafts still made using ancient techniques, this little known region is bursting with one-of-a-kind, sustainably made pieces...I’m in the village of Ludiya, a couple of hours’ drive from the town of Bhuj...On a tour of the region, I find craftswomen across villages engrossed in the same kind of activities, but working on a mindboggling variety of designs. It’s only when I visit resource centres located inside retail outlets like Shrujan and Khamir that I start to really understand the rich traditions of embroidery, weaving and block printing in Kutch, and how each community has its own motifs and techniques. Both these shopmuseums were set up in the aftermath of natural disasters in the area – Shrujan after the crippling drought of 1969 and Khamir after the devastating earthquake of 2001 – to help the area find its feet again through indigenous craft......When Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the US in 2014 for the Indo-US summit, he carried with him a special gift for then President Barack Obama – a rogan (oil) painting of the Tree of Life....Read more… (Charukesi Ramadurai, The Independent, Wed, 27 Jun, 04:28pm)
