World Sanskrit Conference at University of British Columbia (July 9-13, 2018) Hon’ble Minister of Human Resource Development of India, Shri. Prakash Javadekar lighted the traditional lamp and formally inaugurated the 17th World Sanskrit Conference in Vancouver. Hon’ble Minister called for use of Sanskrit as a language of common use, not just research and saluted all the torch bearers of Sanskrit in his inaugural speech. High Commissioner Mr. Vikas Swarup and Consul General Mrs. Abhilasha Joshi with Consul Mr. Jasbir Singh attended the inaugural Ceremony. Hon’ble Minister visited Anthropology Museum, Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability and UBC President’s office. He interacted with Indian undergraduate students at UBC.

Banquet on the occasion of 17th World Sanskrit Conference (July 9, 2018) Banquet hosted by Hon'ble Minister for Human Resources Development of India, Shri. Prakash Javadekar on the occasion of 17th World Sanskrit Conference was held at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver. The conference was organized by Lead Organizers from Department of Asian Studies, UBC with support from the International Association of Sanskrit Studies from 9-13 July, 2018 for the first time in Canada. High Commissioner Mr. Vikas Swarup, Consul General Mrs. Abhilasha Joshi Hon’ble Mrs. Jinny Sims, Minister for Citizen Services, Hon’ble Mr. Raj Chouhan, Deputy Speaker and Hon’ble Mr. Bruce Ralston, Minister for Trade and Economy graced the inaugural gala featuring the famed Nepathya Kuttiyatam theatre, the oldest surviving Sanskrit dance form of ancient India.

Minister met with Hon’ble Raj Chouhan, Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly and with Her Honour Mrs. Janet Austin, Lieutenant Governor of BC and briefed them on the transformational steps being taken by Govt of India especially in the field of education for the benefit of youth and discussed ways to further strengthen India-BC ties.

Cultural – Heritage Tourism in India Manas Wildlife Sanctuary, Assam Manas takes its name from the Goddess Manasa. The site is noted for its spectacular scenery, with a variety of habitat types that support a diverse fauna, making it the richest of all Indian wildlife areas. The park represents the core of an extensive tiger reserve that protects an important migratory wildlife resource along the West Bengal to Arunachal Pradesh and Bhutan borders. Its wetlands are of international importance. Lying in the foothills of the Outer Himalaya, the area is low-lying and flat. The Manas River flows through the western portion of the park, where it splits into three separate rivers, and joins the Brahmaputra some 64 km further south. These and other rivers running through the tiger reserve carry an enormous amount of silt and rock debris from the foothills, resulting from the heavy rainfall, fragile nature of the rock and steep-gradients of the catchments. This leads to the formation of alluvial terraces, comprising deep layers of deposited rock and detritus overlain with sand and soil of varying depth, shifting river channels and swamps. The area of the Boki basin, in the west of the park, is sometimes inundated during the monsoon. The three main types of vegetation are: tropical semi-evergreen forests in the northern part of the park; tropical moist and dry deciduous forests (the most common type); and extensive alluvial grasslands in the western part of the park. The Manas Wildlife Sanctuary, Assam entered the UNESCO world heritage list in 1985.

India bats for technology, finance to achieve climate goals India is committed to follow the green path but needs technology and finance as it continues to work to meet objectives of the international environmental conventions, an Indian official said here on Thursday. Playing a crucial role to mitigate climate change and other environmental challenges across the globe, Union Environment Secretary CK Mishra said India has decided to strengthen its support with a 25 per cent increase over its contribution to $15 million to the Global Environment Facility's (GEF) new investment cycle. He was addressing the Sixth GEF Assembly, which meets every four years, on its concluding day that saw over 1,000 delegates across the globe in this Vietnamese port city. India brings clarity on income tax computation for foreign firms The government has notified rules for computation of income tax for foreign companies if they have place of effective management in the country. According to tax experts, it brings clarity on various aspects of the new place of effective management (POEM) regime. Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has notified a mechanism for calculation of written-down value, and computation of brought-forward loss and unabsorbed depreciation. It has said a company would continue to be treated as a foreign company even after it becomes resident in India. "The notification has provided clarity to the foreign companies which shall be considered as a resident in India owing to its POEM being in India,” said Rakesh Nangia, managing partner at tax consultancy Nangia Advisors LLP. Indian Railways sets record, builds subway at a busy track in 5 hrs; The East Coast Railway, one of the blue-chip zones of Indian Railways, has created a record by completing a subway construction at a busy railway track between Pendurthi and Kothavalasa line in Andhra Pradesh in less than five hours. The level crossing number 484 between Kothavalasa and Pendurthi was a manned level crossing until now. ''The work to construct the subway was sanctioned in 2017, and the limited height subway work, which comprised the installation of 20 segments of 1.5m width, was started in over four and a half hours back,'' said a railway employee posted at East Coast Railway Visakhapatnam, who was also managing the construction work. This Delhi Institute is getting India's 1st AI Supercomputer so students can build smarter AI The Central Electronics Engineering Research Institute (CEERI) in Delhi and NVIDIA have tied up to announce the new CEERINVIDIA Centre of Excellence (CNCoE). This is a research lab that will house high-throughput AI computing infrastructure. The computing systems will be open for CSIR (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research) to use, as well as public and private organizations and industries across the country, to conduct research and development. 6. Three B.Tech students in Tamil Nadu develop India’s first self-driving wheelchair Three final-year engineering students of Amritha Vishwa Vidyapeetham University in Coimbatore have developed a self-driving wheelchair called ‘Self-E’ with an autonomous navigation system which ensured easy travel of users from one place to another without user intervention. The Robotic Operating System (ROS) helps navigate automatically making it user-friendly. The user can touch any point on the generated map, and the wheelchair will drive to that place automatically navigating its own path and avoiding obstacles. Unlike the imported wheelchairs, Self-E would cost only less than a lakh once the technology is successfully commercialized in India. Two IIT-Gandhinagar professors among 50 women education leaders Two professors of the Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar (IIT-Gn), have been named among the 50 women education leaders for 2018.
