Cultural – Heritage Tourism in India Rani-ki-Vav (The Queen’s Stepwell), Patan, Gujarat Rani-ki-Vav (the Queen’s Stepwell) at Patan, Gujarat is located on the banks of the Saraswati River and was initially built as a memorial to a king in the 11th century AD. Stepwells are a distinctive form of subterranean water resource and storage systems on the Indian subcontinent, and have been constructed since the 3rd millennium BC. They evolved over time from what was basically a pit in sandy soil towards elaborate multi-storey works of art and architecture. Rani-ki-Vav was built at the height of craftsmens’ ability in stepwell construction and the Maru-Gurjara architectural style, reflecting mastery of this complex technique and great beauty of detail and proportions. Designed as an inverted temple highlighting the sanctity of water, it is divided into seven levels of stairs with sculptural panels of high artistic quality; more than 500 principle sculptures and over a thousand minor ones combine religious, mythological and secular imagery, often referencing literary works. The fourth level is the deepest and leads into a rectangular tank of 9.5 by 9.4 metres, at a depth of 23 metres. The well is located at the westernmost end of the property and consists of a shaft, 10 metres in diameter and 30 metres deep. The Hill Forts entered the UNESCO world heritage list in 2014.

3. Aviation in India – A march towards progress Between 2015 and mid-2018, airline traffic in India which had consistently shown exponential growth over the years, took an expected leap, bringing air transport to the cusp of an unstoppable forward march. India is fast reaching eminence in the aviation industry. Arguably, India’s strong economic growth serves as a catalyst. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has stated that in 2015, there was a five-fold increase in India’s GDP reaching US trillion. During the January–March period of 2015 India’s growth was at 7.5% compared to China’s 7%, making it the fastest growing economy in the world. Another significant advantage is the cutting-edge information technology (IT) coming out of the country, which is a key contributor to India’s economy, contributing nearly 10% to the overall GDP of India. 5. Women in Science: Bushra Ateeq on identifying biomarkers for prostate cancer, improving lives of patients Clean, gleaming benches lined Bushra Ateeq’s laboratory and I watched curiously as her students worked diligently with the high-tech equipment that occupied the space. Picking up on my interest, Bushra unveiled her prized possession — a fluorescent electron microscope. “In my Masters and PhD days, I had to go to other departments to use their fluorescent microscopes. Now my lab has one of its own,” she said proudly. An Associate Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, one of India’s first IITs, Bushra focuses on cancers of the prostate, breast and the colon. “The whole idea for me is to fill the bench-to-bedside gap," she said, referring to the typically long waits involved in translating research to treatments available in the hospitals. 6. How Karnataka–India’s renewables leader–could be self reliant in electricity without new coal plants By adding 11 gigawatt (GW) renewables capacity in the coming decade, or as much as 11 coal-fired power plants of 1,000 MW each, Karnataka–the national leader in renewable energy generation–could become self-reliant in electricity by 2027-28 and not add to its current fossil-fuel capacity, according to a new study. If successful, renewables with 23 GW or 60% of the state’s installed capacity will generate 43% of the 110 terawatt-hour (TWH) electricity demand of Karnataka by 2027-28, said the July 2018 report by The Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA), a think-tank, up from 27% today. Coal with 9.4 GW or 25% of the state’s total installed capacity will make up 39% of electricity generation in a decade, down from 49% today.
