Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) is celebrated once in every two years to strengthen the engagement of the overseas Indian community with the Government of India and reconnect them with their roots. During the Convention, selected overseas Indians are also honored with the prestigious Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award to recognize their contributions to various fields both in India and abroad. The 15th PBD Convention is being held on 21-23 January 2019 in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. The theme of PBD Convention 2019 is "Role of Indian Diaspora in building New India". Cultural Heritage - Festivals of India Gita Jayanti - December 18, 2018 The Bhagavad Gita is the most sacred, important Hindu script that influences numerous people, and Gita Jayanti is the birthday of Bhagavad Gita. This day falls on Shukla Ekadashi of the Margashirsha month. According to the English calendar, this festival occurs during November or December. It is that sacred day when Lord Krishna gave the immortal message to Arjuna in Kurukshetra. Followers of Lord Krishna all over the world celebrate this day. Gita Jayanti is celebrated by reading the Bhagavad Gita and discussing it with learned priests and scholars about how it has been benefiting humanity even today. Followers of Lord Krishna also fast on this as it falls on Ekadashi. Many devotional songs are sung and danced on together. People perform puja and distribute sweets. The main purpose of celebrating Gita Jayanti is to recall the words of Gita and to apply it in our daily life. It allows individuals and families to lead a courageous as well as an active life that is productive. Rituals of the Festival: • Temples dedicated to Lord Krishna celebrate this day with great enthusiasm, which includes performing puja along with special prayers. • Devotees from different parts of India and abroad, like to visit Kurukshetra on this day and take a holy bath in the sacred ponds. • Apart from holy bath, puja of Lord Krishna can be performed at home with aarti at the end. • Since, it is celebrated on Ekadashi, it is important that devotees who fast on this day do not consume any kind of grains like rice, wheat, and barley. • There have been many organized celebrations taking place to teach the value of Dharma to the youth of today through explanation of the Gita on this special day.

Observing this day allows individuals to act correctly for the near future because one reads the holy book of Gita. It has also increased the popularity of Hinduism all over the world. Kerala first state to have 4 international airports Kerala has become the first state in the country to have four international airports with the inauguration of the Kannur airport on Sunday. Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan jointly flagged off the inaugural Air India Express flight, carrying 186 passengers to Abu Dhabi, at the airport near Mattannur town in the morning. With the commissioning of the airport, the state has become the first in the country to have four international airports, with Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode being the other three. 2. Meet the start up that launched India’s 1st private satellite, via Elon Musk! Kris Nair and Asshar Farhan, scientists and co-founders of Exseed Space Innovations Pvt Ltd, created history on 4th December 2018 by launching India’s first privately owned satellite into space. Hitching a ride on the Elon Musk-led SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket, the satellite shot for the stars! The satellite, Exseed SAT 1, was built in just 18 months by a team of eight scientists, including the founders. This “CubeSat” weighs only 1 kg, and its dimensions are no bigger than a tissue box. How the traditional embroidery of Lambani tribal women came to adorn clothing at London Fashion Week Modern clothing embellished with kasuthi kelsa (embroidery work) that is unique to the Lambani tribal community in Karnataka has helped local women keep the traditional craft alive. 6. Indian tribe revives heirloom seeds for health and climate security The Dongrias, one of the most vulnerable and traditional tribes of India, live in remote hamlets scattered throughout the Niyamgiri hill range in southern Orissa, a state in the country’s eastern limb. In the village of Rodango, not far from the hillside planters, 30-year-old Gatri Kadraka laid out a colorful array of seeds in her courtyard: three indigenous varieties of finger millet, two varieties of foxtail millet, pearl millet, barnyard millet, little millet, an upland variety of paddy or rice, two local varieties of sorghum, maize, black gram, cowpeas, pigeon peas, castor beans, cucumber, pumpkin, gourd and spinach, and tubers of tapioca and forest turmeric. “These are presents from Niyam Raja, the king of all mountain gods in Niyamgiri,” she said. “As long as we respect our hills, rivers and soil, he will keep us nourished,” she added…Read more… (Sonali Prasad, Mongabay, Sat, 01 Dec, 05:08pm)
