73rd Independence Day of India Celebrations (August 15, 2019) 73rd Independence Day of India was celebrated with gaiety and fervour by the Consulate General of India in Vancouver together with a large gathering of members of the Indian community and friends of India. Consul General Mrs. Abhilasha Joshi unfurled the national flag which was followed by singing of the National Anthem and reading out of the speech of Hon’ble President Shri. Ram Nath Kovind. Veterans of the Ex-Servicemen Association proudly displaying their medals and decorations, smartly saluted the national flag. Hon’ble Jinny Sims, BC Minister for Citizen Services and Hon’ble Raj Chouhan, Dy Speaker, graced the occassion. Hon’ble Premier John Horgan had earlier conveyed his greetings on the occassion to the Consulate. Community leaders from the prominent gurdwaras, temples, cultural and business associations and friends from all walks of life participated with great enthusiasm in the ceremony.

India Day Celebrations Organised by Laxminarayan Mandir, Surrey (August 18, 2019) Consul General Mrs. Abhilasha Joshi participated in the India Day celebrations at Laxminarayan Mandir, Surrey. Hon’ble MP Sukh Dhaliwal, City of Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum, Temple officials and large gathering of Indian diaspora graced the occasion.

Cultural Heritage - Festivals of India Krishna Janmashtami and Dahi Handi (August 25, 2019) The festival of Janmashtami commemorates the birthday of Lord Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The festival is also referred to as Gokulashtami, or Govinda in Maharashtra. Lord Krisha is revered for his wisdom about how to live life on Earth. The festival runs for two days. In 2019, it will take place on August 24-25. One of the best places to experience the festival is in the city of Mumbai. Celebrations take place at hundreds of locations across the city and Maharashtra Tourism runs special buses for foreign tourists. The huge ISKCON temple complex, in the beach side suburb of Juhu, also has a special festival program. News from/of India 1. India’s Chandrayaan-2 successfully accomplishes 1st orbit maneuver Chandrayaan-2, India’s 2nd Moon Mission, successfully accomplished its 1st orbit maneuver. On Thursday, the spacecraft’s earthbound maneuvers will be performed and by August 20, 2019, it’s slated to arrive on the Moon. July 26, 2019 is scheduled for its 2nd orbit maneuver. The ambitious space mission was propelled by ISRO (India’s Space Research Organization) on July 22, 2019 from Sriharikota, India’s spaceport on the Andhra Pradesh’s eastern shore. K. Sivan, Chief of ISRO indicated it to be one of the very challenging missions and said that the launch was at first dated for July 15, 2019, but owing to a technical hitch, it had to be postponed. International Cooperative Trade Fair (IICTF) at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi on 11 – 13 October 2019 The National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) is organising the first ever India International Cooperative Trade Fair (IICTF) at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi on 11 – 13 October 2019. The Trade Fair is the first of its kind being organized and is aimed at promoting cooperative to cooperative trade with India and abroad leading to enhanced rural and farm prosperity.
