Cultural Heritage - Festivals of India Navaratri Festival (September 29-October 7, 2019) Navaratri is a nine-night festival that celebrates the Mother Goddess or Shakti in all her manifestations, including Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati. Worship and fasting take place in the daytime, while the nights are reserved for feasting and dancing. The festival culminates with Dussehra, the victory of good over evil, on the tenth day. In Delhi, the feature of Navaratri celebrations are the Ramlila plays that take place all over the city. The festival is celebrated as Golu, with the display of dolls, in South India. In Kolkata, it's Durga Puja.

Garba Festival (September 29-October 7, 2019) Garba is a folk dance which has originated from Gujarat and performed during the nine days of Navratri in praise of Goddess Durga and depicting nine different forms of Maa Durga. Garba is also known as Garbi, Garbha, and Garbha deep. These words have originated from the Sanskrit word “Garbha” which means womb of a woman and “deep” means earthen oil lamps. In short, the literal meaning of Garba is the celebration of the sanctity of a woman. This festival gives special importance to women and how they have been given the blessing of bringing life in this world.

India News Section 1. India's PM Narendra Modi and Donald Trump visit Houston Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump visited Houston Sunday. Both leaders spoke about the close relationship between both countries and the strides India has made socially and economically. Roughly 50,000 people attended “Howdy, Modi!," including Sen. PM Narendra Modi receives Global Goalkeeper Award for Swachh Bharat campaign Prime Minister Narendra Modi received the prestigious Global Goalkeeper Award for the Swach Bharat Abhiyan which he had started on October 2, 2014. The cleanliness campaign, launched on Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary, was well-received by Indians and PM Modi's efforts were recognized by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. India: A free rickshaw-ambulance: One man's mission Harjinder Singh, a 76-year-old auto rickshaw driver, is pleased that people will have to pay a hefty fine for violating traffic rules under the new Motor Vehicles Amendment Act. The new law, which came into force on September 1, aims at stricter punishment for speeding, drunk driving, jumping traffic signals and driving without a seat belt. 7. Madhubani paintings go from mud walls to world museums “For a Madhubani painter, to paint is to write. The artist will never refer to his creative process as painting but writing,” says Manisha Jha, one of the leading Madhubani artists in India. Jha, for the same reason, has titled her new Delhi exhibition Likhiya. As a curator, Jha brought over a 100 leading Madhubani artists together for the show. And as an artist, she has contributed to all of these paintings. The Madhubani art emerging from Mithila region of Bihar is popular as a community art form. The main objective of MANITEX is to show case all the exquisitely and uniquely beautiful products of handlooms, handicrafts, dyeing & printing, power loom, garment, embroidery and costume of Manipur to a larger platform with participation of different States and countries.
