Consulate News Yoga Round Table Dialogue (November 29, 2019) The Consulate General of India was honored to host Hon. Adrian Dix, Minister of Health, BC Govt. and Dr. H. R. Nagendra, Chancellor of S-VYASA (Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana) University – world’s premier Yoga University, to a Yoga Round table dialogue at the Consulate on Friday, 29th November 2019. Consul General Mrs. Abhilasha Joshi welcomed Dr. Nagendra and his colleagues Dr. Manjunath MK, Director of R&D and Sh. Dayanand Swamy, Finance Director at S-VYASA to Vancouver on their brief visit here. An accomplished engineer and scientist who has also worked at NASA, Dr. Nagendra is a prominent personality in the world of Yoga who is responsible for promoting Yoga on the basis of scientific research. Dr. Arun Garg, Chair & President of Canada India Network Society (CINS) moderated the round table discussions which was inter alia, attended by Ms. Renee Saklikar, wife of Hon. Adrian Dix, Swami Satya Prakash of Burnaby temple and Dr. Preeti of VISHWA.

Consular Camps (November 23, 24, 2019) 6 officers from Consulate in two teams visited Saskatoon and Kamloops cities in Saskatchewan and B.C. Provinces respectively on 23 - 24 November and organized Consular Camps there. In both places, all consular applications were accepted from service seekers, which included visitors from neighboring cities too. A total of 236 consular services were granted/accepted by the visiting teams in both cities. Consular Officers also met Indian international students in Thompson Rivers University (TRU) in Kamloops. TRU Dean of Students and CEO International Operations and other senior executives dealing with international students, particularly from India, were also present in the meet. Consular officer had an interactive session with the Indian students and TRU officers and advised them on various aspects of student life in a foreign land as well as responded to their queries on varied issues.

Cultural Heritage - Festivals of India Karthigai Deepam Festival (December 10, 2019) A festival celebrated by Hindus in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, Karthigai Deepam takes place in a particularly spectacular way in the holy town of Tiruvannamalai. On the evening of Karthigai day, a huge fire lamp is lit high up on Mount Arunachala. Pilgrims come from far and wide to walk around the mountain, and to pray to Lord Shiva. It's believed that Lord Shiva appeared as an endless flame of light before Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma. Hence, oil lamps are lit in homes as well.

Dastkar Winter Mela (December 12-23, 2019) Dastkar is dedicated to improving the economic status of craftspeople and promoting traditional crafts. One way they do this is by holding regular markets to provide a platform for craftspeople from all over India to come and sell their wares. The Winter Mela, organized in conjunction with Delhi Tourism, is one such market and it's a highlight of the Christmas season. It features winter textiles, herbal and organic products, cultural performances, and Christmas food.

Saskatchewan Province Concludes Successful India Trade Mission Trade and Export Development Minister Jeremy Harrison returned from a successful trade mission to India, his first visit to the country, where he attended several meetings and conferences to promote Saskatchewan. Harrison travelled to New Delhi where he addressed more than 350 delegates at the Indo-Canadian Business Chamber Annual National Convention and to Mumbai where he spoke at the Canada-India Business Council Forum. Canada's CPPIB to invest up to $600 mln in Indian infrastructure fund BENGALURU, Dec 5 (Reuters) - Canada’s biggest public pension fund is investing up to $600 million in India’s National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF), as it seeks to grow its infrastructure bets in Asia’s third-largest economy. The deal includes a commitment of $150 million in NIIF’s Master Fund and co-investment rights of up to $450 million in future opportunities to invest alongside the Master Fund, Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) said in a statement on Thursday. Cleanmax to invest Rs 600 cr to set up solar farm in Haryana Mumbai: Energy solar solutions provider Cleanmax Solar is setting up 150 MW of solar farm under the group captive model in Haryana with an investment of Rs 600 crore, a senior company official said. The solar farm will be developed in Sirsa district, on a stretch of 600 acres of land which is well situated for grid stability and to achieve high solar power generation. Organizations improving the living conditions of the Adivasis India’s indigenous peoples, the Adivasis, comprised of over 700 recognized tribes and constitute 8.6 percent of the country’s population. While the 1950 Constitution protects the rights of the Adivasis, centuries of exploitation, displacement and neglect still resound in the lives of these primarily rural indigenous people. The living conditions of the Adivasis lag behind those of other demographics, particularly in health care. However, humanitarian organizations dedicate themselves to facilitating Adivasi access to health care infrastructure, with significant results. Improving farmers’ livelihood with tech The Collectives for Integrated Livelihood Initiatives (CInI), an initiative of Tata Trusts, has scaled up its programme on Lakhpati Kisan with technology integration in partnership with agri-tech firm CropIn to improve the livelihoods of more than 40,000 tribal households across its focused states. The partnership, announced at an event conducted by CInI in Ranchi, comes as part of CInI’s ‘Mission 2020: Lakhpati Kisan – Smart Villages’ programme, which aims to bring over 1 lakh households out of poverty by improving their livelihood. 6. This is how India’s women helped eradicate smallpox Smallpox is one of the only diseases to have been eradicated by sustained human effort. But before it was eradicated in 1977, it claimed an estimated 300 million lives in the 20th century alone. The highly contagious disease was characterized by fever and a spotted skin rash.
