Hindu Maha Samgamam (May 11, 2019) Consul General Mrs. Abhilasha Joshi inaugurated the Hindu Maha Samgamam organized by Organization of Hindu Malayalee Society on May 11, 2019 at North Delta Secondary Theatre, Delta.

Community Outreach visit to Regina (May 11, 12, 2019) Consul CPV Mr. H. Venkatachalam is with Mr. Amrinder Singh Sandhu, President of India Canada Association, Regina (Left) and Mr. Mark Docherty, Speaker of Saskatchewan Legislative Assembly (Right).

Consular Camps in Regina On request of Indian citizens and Canadian citizens of Indian origin in Canada, the Consulate organized a camp for consular services in the city of Regina on Sunday, 12 May 2019. More than 200 applications for Indian passport, visa, OCI and miscellaneous services were accepted in this camp. Before the camp, a public interaction for addressing consular queries was hosted on Saturday, 11 May 2019. More than 60 persons attended and their various queries were resolved during public interaction which lasted for 2 hours. A 4-member team from Consulate visited Regina for consular camp. Consulate team also met prominent members of Indian diaspora during Regina visit.

Cultural Heritage - Festivals of India Ramadan – Festival of Breaking the Fast (May – June, 2019) Eid ul Fitr is celebrated to break the month-long fast of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting. A month of fasting when people don’t eat and drink during the day. Festival of Breaking of the Fast, occurs as soon as the new moon is sighted at the end of the month of fasting. During the month of Ramadan all Muslims do fasting, feasting, worship and prayer. It is a very big festival for all the Muslims in the world. Muslims of India along with other Muslims in the world celebrate Eid ul Fitr to their best. In India, the night before Eid is called Chaand Raat, which means night of the moon. People often visit bazaars and shopping malls for the last minute Eid shopping. Women and young girls paint their hands with traditional temporary tattoos also known as Henna or Mehndi and wear colorful bangles. New clothes, gifts and Eidi are traditional way to celebrate Eid ul Fitr. Best food to eat during Ramadan are fruits and mixed nuts as a snack, Drink lots of water. During the sacred month of Ramadan, Sevai is a most important dish in every day menu. Sevai is a kid friendly dish and very easy to prepare, this is eaten during dinner as a dessert. News from/of India 1. India’s technology sector driving economy The Indian tech industry will add another three million new jobs in the next five years, according to an international organisation that studies India’s “flexi” working industry. In total, the number of the country’s tech job openings will be 7 million by 2023. All these new jobs would come up in digital technology areas such as AI, machine learning, IoT, data science, analytics, big data, blockchain, and augmented reality. Jobs would also be created in newer technology areas that are presently unknown but are expected to emerge and evolve in the next few years. The organisation’s president told reporters that there is a visible behavioural change happening in the IT and ITes sectors. Sugar exports surge to 21.29 lakh tonnes (approx. 2.13 Million tonnes) so far this marketing year The country's sugar exports surged to 21.29 lakh tonne so far in the current marketing year ending September, as against about five lakh tonnes shipped in the entire 2017-18, industry data showed on Monday. Out of the 21.29 lakh tonnes exported between October 1 and April 6, raw sugar accounted for 9.76 lakh tonnes, the All India Sugar Trade Association (AISTA) said in a statement. 3. SEWA Bank spawns 3 generations of biz-women in this family It is a family of three generation entrepreneurs, and the credit goes to Mahila SEWA Sahakari Bank Ltd. (SEWA). The bank primarily lends money to women in the unorganised sector, and the Makwana family couldn't be more grateful to them. Lilavati Chavda, her daughter Bhargavi Makwana and grand daughter Nirali Makwana all run businesses of their own. For Lilavati, who first worked as a cook, the journey was a tough one. "Initially I would do catering work for people. I didn't have funds to start something on my own. 4. IIT-B researchers develop ‘Made in India’ microprocessor Engineers from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) have developed a microprocessor called AJIT, the first to be conceptualised, designed, developed and manufactured in India. The innovation, which has brought industry, academia and the government together, could reduce the country’s dependence on imports. The project was funded by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and IIT Bombay. 5. Indian scientists discover how serotonin helps brain cells cope with stress Serotonin is a chemical that relays information from one part of the brain to another, and is known to play a key role in a number of functions ranging from sleep to social behaviour. Now Indian scientists have discovered that serotonin boosts energy production in brain cells and helps them survive under stress. This new knowledge can potentially be used to develop anti-stress drugs in future. The study by scientists at the Mumbai-based Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) has found that the neurotransmitter boosts the number of mitochondria in brain cells. Mitochondria in brain cells generate energy to carry out cellular functions and play a role in survival of brain cells under stress.
