2. 14-year-old Indian origin boy becomes youngest pilot to fly single-engine plane A 14-year-old Indian-origin schoolboy in the UAE has become one of the youngest pilots to fly a single-engine aircraft, according to a media report. Mansour Anis, a class IXth student at Delhi Private School in Sharjah, received a certificate for his first solo flight from an aviation academy in Canada last week, Gulf News reported. His solo flight was about 10-minute-long during which he taxied the aircraft from the parking bay to the runway, took off for a flight of about five minutes and landed back, the report said. Mansour, who flew a Cessna 152 aircraft during his solo flight, now has a student pilot permit. Apart from the flying test, he has also passed a radio communication test and scored 96 per cent in the PSTAR Test, an eligibility test for Transport Canada. (The Hans India, Fri, 08 Sep, 03:40pm)

3. Indian-origin scientist creates medical camera to see through body An Indian-origin scientist has led a team at a UK university to create a medical camera that can see through the human body, and he believes it has immense potential for doctors in tracking internal examinations. Kev Dhaliwal, Professor of Molecular Imaging and Healthcare Technology at the University of Edinburgh, believes that with this device doctors will no longer be required to exclusively rely on expensive scans and X-rays. The camera is designed to help doctors track medical tools, known as endoscopes, which are used to investigate a range of internal conditions. The new device is able to detect sources of light inside the body, such as the illuminated tip of the endoscope’s long flexible tube. Until now, it has not been possible to track where an endoscope is located in the body in order to guide it to the right place without using X-rays or other expensive methods. The new camera takes advantage of advanced technology that can detect individual particles of light, called photons, the team explains. Experts have integrated thousands of single photon detectors onto a silicon chip, similar to that found in a digital camera. The technology is so sensitive that it can detect the tiny traces of light that pass through the body’s tissue from the light of the endoscope. It can also record the time taken for light to pass through the body, allowing the device to also detect the scattered light. Proteus is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and the latest research has been published in the journal ‘Biomedical Optics Express’. Vol. 01, Issue. 01, September, 2017. 4. Researchers develop climate-based dengue forecasting model Examining what climatic factors help spread dengue in India, researchers have found that a rise in temperature from 17 to 30 degrees Celsius can increase transmission of the mosquito-borne disease fourfold. However, a further increase in temperature beyond 35 degrees Celsius is detrimental to the mosquito survival, showed the findings published in the journal Emerging Microbes & Infections. The study was conducted by the University of Liverpool Britain in collaboration with the Hyderabad-based Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT) and National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Guwahati. The researchers evaluated the relationship of climatic factors in the spread of dengue in different climatic zones in the country through the states of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Kerala. The study found that Kerala being warm (temperature range 23.5-30 degrees Celsius) and wet and with short incubation period (9-14 days) experiences the highest number of dengue cases. The incubation period is the shortest during the monsoon season in most states and therefore there is an enhanced risk of dengue during this time, the researchers found. 5. Indian scientists develop technology for harvesting water from dew A suitably designed dew-cum-rainwater harvesting plant can potentially harvest 320- 325 mm of rainwater and atmospheric moisture during a year. A group of Indian scientists, working with experts from France, has developed technology for harvesting dew or atmospheric moisture for drinking water purposes and shown that it can be a cost-effective option in water-stressed regions like Kutch in Gujarat. India’s first potable water production plant designed to harvest atmospheric moisture and process it into drinking water has been set up at Kothara village in the Kutch region. It has a capacity to processan average 500 liters of water daily. The dew harvesting technology involves harvesting dew using specially designed condenser panels, storing raw water and putting it through filtration process. When conditions for dew formation are right – clear sky and humid coastal breeze- the panel surfaces cool to dew point temperature causing condensation to occur. Condensing water flows down sloping sides by gravity into a central channel. (Dinesh C Sharma , Down To Earth, Thu, 07 Sep, 05:38pm)
