Consulate News Indian Students’ Get Together / Annual Day Celebration (22 December, 2017) Consulate General of India, Vancouver, organized a year end get-together for Indian Students studying in various universities in its consular jurisdiction on 22 Dec 2017 at the Consulate premises. About 80 students participated in the event. Mrs Abhilasha Joshi, Consul General addressed the students and interacted with them along with officers of the Consulate. Students were encouraged to register in the MADAD portal. CGI had also invited Mrs Ranjana Sinha, Branch Manager, State Bank of India, Vancouver, to brief the students regarding some special student related schemes of the SBI.

Celebrating Karnataka as the hub of Next Gen Smart foods, the Department of Agriculture, Government of Karnataka is organizing the ‘Organics & Millets 2018 International Trade Fair’ at Bengaluru Palace, Bengaluru during 19 th – 21st January, 2018. News from India 1. India to overtake Britain, France to become 5th largest economy in 2018 The CEBR projections give India the fifth spot a year ahead of the IMF estimates, which move it up in 2019. India will "leapfrog" Britain and France to become the world's fifth largest economy in 2018, ahead of an oncoming major global economic shift towards Asia, according to a British research organization. The World Economic League Table (WELT) 2018 released on Monday by Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR) said that in dollar terms, India will rise from its seventh rank to overtake those European economies next year despite the stumble of demonetization and the introduction of Goods a Services Tax. 2. India’s Digital Payments System Rated Higher Than China, UK and Japan In the past few years, the Indian government has made a concerted effort at making digital payments ubiquitous. For those living in the big cities, the proliferation of digital payments has reached significant proportions. This progress is reflected in a global report published by the US-based financial services technology giant Fidelity National Information Services (FIS), which has rated India’s digital payment systems above the ones prevalent in China, Japan and the UK. 3. India set to become first country to predict tsunami inundations in real time! India will soon be the first country to develop a system that predicts the extent of deluge caused by tsunamis in real time. Scientists claim that this would be a ground-breaking system that will take the work of the Indian Tsunami Early Warning Centre (ITEWC) a step further. ITEWC is a department of the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Sciences, Hyderabad which is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Earth Sciences. ITEWC had already proved its worth when it correctly detected an 8.6 magnitude earthquake on the western coast of Aceh in Northern Sumatra and accurately predicted that it would not generate tsunami waves. Government imposes 30% import duty on chana, masoor To protect the interest of farmers, the government on Thursday imposed 30% import duty on chana and masoor as their production of is expected to be high during the forthcoming Rabi season. "Cheap imports, if allowed unabated are likely to adversely affect the interest of farmers. Taking these factors into consideration and to protect the interest of the farmers government has decided to increase the said import duty," the government said in a statement. At present, tur attracts 10% import duty. Further, Government has recently imposed 50% import duty on yellow peas. Other pulses, however, attract zero import duty. IITH researchers develop "e-skin" that mimics human skin The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) today said that its researchers have developed a low cost, artificial electronic skin (e-skin) which mimics the functionality of the human skin. It stated that this “e-skin” is beneficial for acid attack and burn victims in cases where the skin is permanently damaged and loses functionality. (Business Line, Fri, 22 Dec, 03:52pm)

Karnataka: Newly launched digital bird guide soars high India’s first birder to complete one ‘Big year’ and record 1,128 species of birds from across India in 2015, Shashank Dalvi, has now brought out a digital bird guide in the form of an mobile application called Vannya.
