The 142nd birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (National Unity Day) Celebration The 142nd birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was celebrated on Tuesday, 31st October 2017 as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day) in the Consulate premises. Consul General, Mrs. Abhilasha Joshi addressed the distinguished gathering. Dr. John Harriss, Professor of International Studies in Simon Fraser University, on invitation of the Consulate, delivered a Talk on this occasion. A 17-minutes documentary on Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel – was screened thereafter. Acharya Shreenath Dwivedi recited a poem on Sardar Patel and Mr. Jai Birdi from Chetna Association of Canada also expressed his views. The function was attended by several other distinguished personalities including Dr. (Ms.) Kamal Arora, Co-Director, South Asian Studies Institute from University of the Fraser Valley as well as some representatives from the media. In the forenoon, Consul General had administered a pledge to the officials of the Consulate to foster and reinforce the dedication to preserve and strengthen the unity, integrity and security of the nation.

The 15th Edition of Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) is scheduled to be held from 28th January to 3rd February 2018. MIFF is a biennial documentary, short fiction and animation film festival organized by the Films Division under the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India. In the past, the MIFF has been attended by documentary and animation film-makers from all over the world; and it has become one of the flagship events in India. It may be noted that the Golden Conch, the prestigious top award of MIFF amounting to approximately INR 60 lakhs, recognizes the best talent in documentary & animation film making. 2. Documentary films, short fiction (up to 45 minutes), and animation films produced between September 1st, 2015 to August 31st, 2017 are eligible for entry in the relevant category. New earthquake-resistant concrete to be tested in India Researchers plan to retrofit a school building in quake-prone Uttarakhand with a novel concrete coating that can dramatically enhance the earthquake resistance of seismically vulnerable structures. The seismic-resistant, fibre-reinforced concrete developed at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Canada will see its first real-life application as part of the seismic retrofit of a Vancouver elementary school. The material is engineered at the molecular scale to be strong, malleable, and ductile, similar to steel - capable of dramatically enhancing the earthquake resistance of a seismically vulnerable structure when applied as a thin coating on the surfaces. Researchers subjected the material, called eco-friendly ductile cementitious composite (EDCC), to earthquake simulation tests using intensities as high as the magnitude 9.0 9.1 earthquake that struck Tohoku, Japan in 2011. The research was funded by UBC-hosted Canada-India Research Centre of Excellence IC-IMPACTS, which promotes research collaboration between Canada and India. IC-IMPACTS will make EDCC available to retrofit a school in Roorkee in Uttarakhand, a highly seismic area, researchers said. "This technology is gaining significant attention in India and will provide our Canadian companies a strong competitive edge in the growing global infrastructureBSE 0.00 % market," said UBC professor Nemy Banthia, who supervised the work. EDCC combines cement with polymer-based fibres, flyash and other industrial additives, making it highly sustainable, according to Banthia. "By replacing nearly 70 per cent of cement with flyash, an industrial byproduct, we can reduce the amount of cement used," said Banthia. "This is quite an urgent requirement as one tonne of cement production releases almost a tonne of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, and the cement industry produces close to seven per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions," Banthia added. 2. Meet the man who invented a solar mosquito trapper-cum-destroyer When Mathews K Mathews from Kottayam district in Kerala invented a solar mosquito trapper-cum-destroyer in 2000, it was the result of years of trial and error. Now, his innovation — known as Hawker — is a cost-effective way of getting rid of mosquitoes. Growing up among rubber plantations, Mathews had witnessed just how big threat mosquitoes really are. Keen on ridding the world of this disease-causing menace, he began working on a non-toxic solution. According to Rediff, he said, this cost-effective and eco-friendly product can be installed anywhere; it does not use any chemical to destroy the mosquitoes and flies unlike other mosquito repellents which emit gases that could cause asthma and lung cancer. The official announcement on the National Innovation Foundation website says that this device makes use of the smell from septic tanks to attract mosquitoes. Once the mosquitoes get trapped, the heat built up inside the device as a result of direct sunlight kills them. It can be installed near septic tanks which will then trap and kill mosquitoes directly at their breeding grounds. It measures 25 cm × 20 cm × 25 cm and weighs about 1.5 kg. Mathews hails from a plantation family, with his ancestors having cultivated rubber, coffee, coconut, pepper, and other cash crops. During his childhood days, he spent a large amount of time capturing and playing with rodents and flies. Soon after his graduation, he spent over a decade developing a product that traps and kills mosquitoes. He also holds an important designation at Kine Technologies and Research India, based out of Kottayam, the first city in India to be selected by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India for transformation into an eco-city. ICICI Bank CEO Chanda Kochhar, Priyanka Chopra among world's most powerful women: Forbes The overall list was topped by Angela Merkel, who retained the top spot for the seventh consecutive year and 12 times in total. Five Indian women led by ICICI Bank CEO and MD Chanda Kochhar and including Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra, have featured on the list of the world's 100 most powerful women compiled by Forbes, which was topped by German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Ms Kochhar was ranked 32 on the coveted list while HCL Corporation CEO Roshni Nadar Malhotra took the 57th position, followed by Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, founder-Chair, of Biocon, at 71. Other Indians on the list include Shobhana Bhartia, Chairperson and Editorial Director for HT Media, at the 92nd place and Priyanka Chopra, "the most successful Bollywood actor to cross over to Hollywood", at 97. Scientists at Sonapur institute develop innovative technique An innovative technique has been developed by the scientists of the Centre of Plasma Physics, Institute for Plasma Research (CPP-IPR), Sonapur, in collaboration with the Institute for Plasma Research, Gandhinagar for the production of negative hydrogen ions.“Negative hydrogen ions have a wide variety of significant applications in thermonuclear fusion reactor for energy generation, particle accelerators, surface modifications and biomedical fields. Negative hydrogen ion-based neutral beam injection is one of the important methods to heat plasma inside the fusion reactor. However, the existing negative ion source configuration has limitations in terms of production, extraction etc. To overcome these limitations, an experiment based on a novel concept of surface-assisted volume negative ions production by sprinkling cesium coated tungsten dust grains into a hydrogen plasma has been carried out at CPP-IPR and this new concept has been successfully validated,� Dr. Siddhartha Sankar Kausik who developed the technique along with Dr. Bharat Kakati and Dr. Bipul Kumar Saikia (project leader) of CPP-IPR and Dr. Mainak Bandyopadhyay and Prof. Predhiman Krishan Kaw of IPR, Gandhinagar, told The Assam Tribune. The negative hydrogen ions are produced almost uniformly around the dust column and fill the plasma volume. As a result, it is not required to reverse the direction of these ions for extraction unlike conventional negative ion source. Recently these findings were published in an article titled Development of a novel surface assisted volume negative hydrogen ion source in Scientific Reports (A Nature Research Journal), widely considered as one of the best journals in the world. It shows the reliability of the invention of new negative hydrogen ion source and its importance.
