News from India 1. India's food processing sector may attract $33 billion by 2024: Study India's food processing sector has the potential to attract USD 33 billion (about Rs 2.14 lakh crore) in investments by 2024, says a study released here today. The country's food and retail market are expected to touch USD 482 billion by 2020, up from USD 258 billion in 2015, with recent reforms making the sector more competitive and market- oriented, it said. "There is a huge scope for large investments in food processing technologies, skill development and equipment as total food production in India is estimated to double in next 10 years," said the joint study by Indian industry body Assocham and Chicago-based professional services firm Grant Thornton. As a result, the food processing sector has the potential to attract USD 33 billion investment and generate employment of 9 million-person days by 2024, it said. While the sector provides opportunity for growth, it needs to focus on product conformity with global standards and quality together with factors like logistics traceability and safety, quality of packaging and delivery, said the study. "There is a need for policy intervention and field level changes for India to develop global competitiveness in many related sub-sectors and ensure that they are firmly entrenched in global value chains," it said. Fast growth in food processing and simultaneous improvement in the development of value chain are of great importance to achieve favorable terms of trade for India's agriculture sector both in domestic and international markets. "Given the trade in production of food commodities, the food processing industry in India is on an assured track of growth and profitability," the study said. Even marginal reductions in post-harvest losses of fruits and vegetables, which are at about 25-30 per cent, will give better returns and improve farmers' incomes, it added. https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/cons-products/food/indias-food-processing-sector-may-attract-33-billion-by-2024-study/articleshow/61737009.cms

2. Another boost to Modi’s Make in India: Xiaomi sets up new third-party unit in India to make power banks Smartphone maker Xiaomi today said it has tied up with Hipad Technology for third-party manufacturing of its power banks in India. This is the company’s third contract-manufacturing unit in the country and is located in Noida. It has a capacity to make seven power banks a minute, Xiaomi India Head Manu Jain told reporters here. The 10,000 mAh Mi Power Bank 2i and 20,000 mAh Mi Power Bank 2i will be made at the facility, he added. Jain did not disclose the investment details. Spread over 2.3 lakh sq ft, the facility will initially employ over 500 people and the number will be ramped up gradually. “We have seen phenomenal growth in a short span of time and a key reason for that has been our commitment to India. We want to bring the best quality technology at an affordable rate and local manufacturing helps us in that,” Jain said. Xiaomi has two other facilities in Andhra Pradesh for making smartphones in partnership with Foxconn. These have provided employment to over 5,000 people with 90 per cent being women, Jain said. “Today, more than 95 per cent of our smartphones sold in India are assembled locally… We are open to expanding capacity as well as setting up new factories if there is a requirement,” he added. According to research firm IDC, Chinese handset maker Xiaomi caught up with industry leader Samsung to share the top spot in India’s smartphone market for the September quarter with each player accounting for 23.5 per cent share. Talking about the power bank market in India, Jain said there is no third-party data available for the market. “However, the potential is huge. A major challenge is fake power banks flooding the market. We are trying to address this by adding hologram security markers to help customers know they have bought a genuine product,” he said. The hologram sticker has a scratch card that reveals a set of numbers that can be checked online to know if the product is genuine. The 10,000 mAh power bank manufactured in India will be priced at Rs 799, while the 20,000 mAh variant will be available for Rs 1,499. http://www.financialexpress.com/industry/technology/another-boost-to-modis-make-in-india-xiaomi-sets-up-new-third-party-unit-in-india-to-make-power-banks/942235/

Vol. 01, Issue. 12, November 24, 2017. 3. Electronics appliance market set to grow at 10% CAGR by 2022: study The Indian ACE (Appliance and Consumer Electronics) market is expected to grow by 10 per cent CAGR approximately by 2022, according to PwC’s report “Championing change in the Indian appliance and consumer industry”. A study on the growth possibilities of this segment, the report states that India has the potential to be one of fastest growing ACE markets in the world, not only in terms of consumption, but also manufacturing and job creation. Several factors are expected to drive the growth of this segment, including the emerging middle-class, rising disposable incomes and progressive government reforms such as Digital India, Make in India and the Jan Dhan-Aadhaar-Mobile based governance. However, a key challenge for the ACE market continues to be the low domestic cumulative value addition in the production cycle, which is less than 40 per cent for most new age ACE products and 7 per cent for smartphones, far lower than the global average. Further, nearly 84 per cent of the participants surveyed in this report stated that their overall domestic value add in production was less than 50 per cent. This can be attributed to a limited domestic component ecosystem, high cost of finance and power, and inefficient infrastructure. According to Sandeep Ladda, PwC India Partner, Global TMT Tax Leader and Technology Sector Leader: “The government’s efforts coupled with positive transformation of consumer behavior and desire to adopt more modern technologies are likely to create a significant increase in demand for ACE products. “However, to unlock the full potential of the ACE industry, we need to build an ecosystem of supportive regulations around technology enablement and a strong domestic R&D backbone supported with manufacturing competitiveness.” http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/economy/electronics-appliance-market-set-to-grow-at-10-cagr-by-2022-study/article9967617.ece

4. 12-year-old creates his own 3D printer in India 3D printing technology is making its way into school curricula around the world. As the tech becomes more commonplace, younger students are exposed to and steeped in its possibilities. One student who was particularly captivated by the capabilities of 3D printing was 12-year-old Chinmaya Arya of Laurel High School in Delhi, India. Arya was first introduced to the machine through the 3Dexter technology lab at his school, sometimes staying until 7:00 at night so that he could continue his explorations. He was so captivated by his school’s 3D printer that after eight months of continual usage at school he decided to create one of his own so that he could use it whenever he wanted. Posts about his desires on the 3Dexter Facebook page received an outpouring of support, including from Arya’s own family members. Arya worked for 42 days and overcame numerous obstacles to build the machine which he then dubbed “Cuxem,” which means “science” according to Arya. With a build volume of 300 mm2 and a resolution of 100 microns, the 3D printer is the first to be built by someone his age in India. The previous record for youngest person to build their own 3D printer in India was held by 15-year-old Angad Daryani back in 2014. Daryani similarly exhibited a fascination and capacity for technology from a very young age, having built his first humanoid robot at the tender age of just eight. His 3D printer was created after dropping out of traditional schooling and working to start his own business selling a 3D printer he developed. His SharkBot is supposed to be able to print any material other than metal and be available at a lower cost than those that are being imported into India currently. Arya appears to be hot on Daryani’s heels and already has plans to create more 3D printers to contribute to the 3Dexter laboratory as well as to sell to his friends for their use. His hope is that the next 3D printer he builds will have a metal body. Arya is just one example of what can happen when children are provided with opportunities to interact with these advanced technologies at a young age. Started in 2015 by seven friends, 3Dexter has worked to change the Indian educational system by providing experiential learning and comprehensive technological solutions for education. The question is: are students such as Arya the exception or the rule when given the opportunity to learn in an immersive education program? How many other innovative young people are out there just waiting for the lightbulb to flicker on? The team at 3Dexter believes the numbers are not insignificant and, so far, they’ve been successfully demonstrating their case. (Hannah Rose Mendoza, 3dprint, Thu, 23 Nov, 02:22pm)
