“Third Anniversary Conference” and “Annual Show Case Event” by BC Chapter of ICAI The British Columbia Chapter of ICAI celebrated its “Third Anniversary" and “Annual Show Case Event” on Sunday, November 19th, 2017 at Fraser view Banquet Hall, 8240 Fraser St, Vancouver, BC, Canada V5X 3X6. Mrs Abhilasha Joshi, Consul General inaugurated the event along with Mr. Deepak Arora, Chairman, British Columbia Chapter of ICAI and other Board members. She congratulated the Chapter on their third anniversary and commended them for the remarkable work being done by the BC chapter of ICAI in terms of its outreach and showcasing the strengths of Indian professionals in the field of accountancy. The Chapter serves as a hub for professionals from India and Canada and is contributing significantly to the community of accountants with their professionalism. The event successfully ended with cultural entertainment and a delicious dinner.

Indian doctors successfully perform first ever kidney transplant in Tanzania In a major step forward in the field of medical science, the first ever kidney transplant was successfully performed in Tanzania by doctors from city-based BLK Super Specialty Hospital in partnership with Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar es Salaam. "It is a matter of great honor that the first ever kidney transplant in Tanzania was performed by a team of Indian doctors," Naresh Kapoor, Executive Director, BLK Super Specialty Hospital, said in a statement. "Such surgeries are enormously complicated with significant risks. Hence, the success of this first ever kidney transplant enlivens hope for the people of Tanzania. I congratulate our team on the success," Kapoor said. The surgery was carried out on a 30-year-old Tanzanian woman who was suffering from end-stage kidney disease and was on hemodialysis for over a year. "The kidney donor was her 27-year-old brother," said HS Bhatyal, Head of Urology and Kidney Transplantation at the hospital. The doctors also acknowledged the support of a team of doctors at Muhimbili National Hospital in conducting the surgery. "Both donor and recipient are recuperating well and should return to normal activities soon. They are under our care and supervision," Sunil Prakash, Director & Head of Nephrology at BLK hospital said. With a broader aim to promote cooperation and mutual understanding between the two countries, the New Delhi-based hospital established partnerships with Muhimbili National Hospital as well as other healthcare institutes in the region such as the JakayaKikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI) and Muhimbili Orthopedic Institute. Ajaita Shah wins pitch competition at GES Ajaita Shah from India has been named the 2017 Global Innovation through Science and Technology (GIST) Catalyst pitch competition Grand Champion at Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES). Her startup, Frontier Markets, is a last mile distribution solution for energy products with a focus on solar technology that empowers women. It gives women the tools they need to teach their communities about the benefits of solar power and sell solar products, said a statement. As the Grand Champion, Shah will receive $50,000 in Amazon Web Services credits; a Dell laptop computer; admission to the 2018 Circular Summit from Alice; an exclusive virtual mentoring session with an Amazon Executive; $100,000 in Google Cloud credits; an interview for Inc. Magazine by Elizabeth Gore, Entrepreneur-in-Residence and Chairman of the Board of Alice; and admission to the 2018 Circular Board Accelerator cohort from Alice. She will also be designated the Cognizant “Genesis Award” Winner and receive $2,000 in cash, courtesy of Cognizant. Jainesha Sinha, founder of GyanDhan, from India; Fiona Edwards Murphy, founder of ApisProtect, from Ireland; and Vaishali Neotia, founder of Merxius Software, from India; all made to the finals for the GIST Catalyst pitch competition. As finalists, they will receive $10,000 in Amazon Web Services credits, a Dell laptop computer, a Circular Summit scholarship from Alice, and $100,000 in Google Cloud credits. 3. India plans “rent a roof” policy to promote rooftop solar To support its ambitious plan to generate 40 gigawatts of rooftop solar power by 2022, the Indian government is planning to launch a “rent a roof” policy, said Anand Kumar, secretary in the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). Under the “rent a roof” policy, the developer will take rooftops on rent and will offer a lease to each household, and then feed the solar power to the grid. The policy is announced at a time when India’s net-metering market is being introduced in different parts of the country. Net metering allows consumers to generate some or all of their own electricity anytime, instead of when it is generated. However, here the responsibility lies with the individual households, whereas in the case of a “rent a roof” scheme all the responsibilities such as installation and maintenance will be taken care by the developer. This policy is expected to provide a major push to the rooftop solar energy segment, which has not been so popular among the developers so far. Despite an attractive fiscal incentive, the solar rooftop sector lags way behind national targets. As of August 2017, the country has installed just 1.7 gigawatts against the 40-gigawatt target by 2022. During India’s National Solar Mission review meeting in July 2017, the committee concluded that the rooftop target is unrealistic and had asked for a revision.
