News from India 1. India’s largest floating solar plant in Kerala is a marvel in frugal engineering India’s largest floating solar plant located in Banasura Sagar reservoir in Wayanad, Kerala, is all set to start operations. The entire construction and installation work was completed this month. Stretching over 6,000 square metres, the 500 kWp (kilowatt peak) solar plant is a mega project commissioned by Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) on a measly budget of ₹9.25 crore. Made of Ferro cement floaters with hollow insides, a total of 18 floating platforms with solar photovoltaic(PV) panels have been installed on the reservoir’s water surface. The project had commenced last year in March, with the plant being set up in collaboration with Thiruvananthapuram-based Adtech Systems Ltd. According to officials of the private firm, the plant will generate 7.5 lakh units of power annually, which will be fed to the KSEB grid using underwater cables. He also explained that the floating solar plants, when compared to ground-mounted counterparts, showcased higher efficiency owing to the moderating effect of water bodies on panel temperature, besides accumulating lower concentration of dust on the panel. The 500kWp project is reportedly a scaled-up version of the 10kWp floating solar project that was installed in Banasura Sagar reservoir in January 2016. 2. B'luru LIGO scientist named CIFAR scholar, to get $1,00,000 in funding City-based researcher Parameswaran Ajith, who is part of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) project that has discovered four gravitational waves so far has been named "2017 Azrieli Global Scholar" by Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR). Ajith, who led a team that worked on theoretical modelling of gravitational waves that was key in LIGO detections, is the only Indian among the 15 exceptional early career investigators to receive this prestigious two-year appointment including $1,00,000 in research support. Their research interests range from solar cell technology, understanding the norms that govern cooperation, and machine learning to black holes and identifying the biological imprint of stress across generations. Ajith earned his PhD from Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (Albert Einstein Institute), Germany and was a post-doctoral fellow at the California Institute of Technology, USA. He has been at the forefront of gravitational wave astronomy as a member of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration and he joined as a faculty at ICTS-TIFR, Bengaluru in 2013, where he continues his research. The CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholars will join close to 400 of the world's best researchers who are addressing some of the most interesting and important questions facing the world today. "The Azrieli Foundation is committed to increasing scientific knowledge and understanding, and we're honoured to be able to help advance the work of these brilliant young scholars." Naomi Azrieli, Chair and CEO of the Azrieli Foundation, which has enabled the CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholars programme said. Support for the programme is also provided by the Love Family Leadership Development Fund. (Chethan Kumar, Times of India, Sat, 14 Oct, 04:04pm)

3. 11-year-old Indian American girl Gitanjali Rao named America’s top young scientist at 2017 discovery education, 3M competition 3M and Discovery Education Oct. 18 announced that an 11-year-old Indian American girl, Gitanjali Rao, has been named the 2017 Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge winner. Rao, of Lone Tree, Colo., was chosen from a group of 10 finalists, which included five Indian American kids (see India-West article here) in capturing the $25,000 top prize and title of America’s Top Young Scientist at the 10th annual event. The tween is working to develop Tethys, a sensor-based device that can detect lead in water faster than other current techniques. Rather than using expensive equipment for testing, Rao’s cost-effective approach to water safety uses a mobile app that populates the water’s status almost immediately, according to a 3M and Discovery Education joint news release. Tethys is designed to be portable and easy to use, allowing individuals to test water safety whenever needed. She hopes to solve the water contamination crisis and decrease long-term health effects from lead exposure, the news release said. Rao, a seventh-grader at STEM School and Academy, competed alongside the nine other finalists during a live competition at the 3M Innovation Center in St. Paul, Minn. During the past three months, Rao and the other finalists had the exclusive opportunity to work directly with a 3M scientist to develop their innovations as part of a unique summer mentorship program, the release said (Giovanni Albanese, India West, Thu, 19 Oct, 01:59pm)
