America Tamil Sangam honors Jayanthi America Tamil Sangam headquartered in New York has recently conferred noted Chennai based Bharatanatyam dancer Jayanthi Srivatsan the title of Naatya Tharagai (dancing star) for her contribution to the South Indian dance form. The citation issued by the Sangam said the dancer, disciple of Guru Roja Kannan has been propagating the dance form for over two plus decades in all its purity. Jayanthi had her initial training with the doyan Guru Padmashri Adyar K. Lakshman with whom she had her arangetram (debut performance). She has performed in all the major Sabhas and Cultural organisations in India including the Sivarathri Dance Festival held at Chidambaram by Natyanjali Trust, Karthik Fine Arts, Spirit of Unity, Sri Parthasarathy Swami Sabha, Indian Fine Arts to name a few. She has also toured the Malaysia and Singapore for performances and workshops. She was awarded the Best Performer twice for the senior category by Sri Parthasarathy Swami Sabha during their dance festival. Superpower India set to replace China as growth engine of Asia: Deloitte report India is poised to emerge as an economic superpower, driven in part by its young population, while China and the Asian Tigers age rapidly, according to a report by Deloitte LLP. The number of people aged 65 and over in Asia will climb from 365 million today to more than half a billion in 2027, accounting for 60 per cent of that age group globally by 2030, Deloitte said in a report on Monday (Sept 18). In contrast, India will drive the third great wave of Asia's growth - following Japan and China - with a potential workforce set to climb from 885 million to 1.08 billion people in the next 20 years and hold above that for half a century. Deloitte names the countries that face the biggest challenges from the impact of ageing on growth as China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, Singapore, Thailand and New Zealand. Asia will need to adjust to cope with a forecast 1 billion people aged 65 and over by 2050. IISER Kerala scientists develop wood-pulp balls to clean oil spills IISER Kerala scientists have found an inexpensive and efficient way to clean up marine oil spills by using marble-sized balls made of wood pulp. Marine oil spill is one of the common disasters worldwide, which has long-lasting, negative impacts for economy and the environment. Apart from leading to huge economic losses, such accidents affect the flora and fauna. There is a lot of interest in developing methods to recoup the oil from such spills. Researchers from Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) in Kerala wanted to look for methods that can both clean the water as well as recover the precious spilt oil. Current methods of cleaning up oil spills include on-site burning, which do not efficiently remove the oil, researchers said. Moreover, there is no way to recover the spilt crude oil. The gelator repels water and only absorbs the oil. It congeals the absorbed oil, which could be recovered by applying pressure or through distillation. The researchers, including Annamalai Prathap from IISER Kerala, have filed a patent for their product in India and are planning to file international patents soon. The Indian coast guard and Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) have shown interest to mass produce the material with the help of government support, Prof Sureshan said. The researchers tested their material on various crude oil varieties from various parts of the world including Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. All crude oils were instantaneously absorbed by the material, researchers said. (NDTV, Mon, 18 Sep, 05:17pm)
4. Indian astronomers discover closest binary supermassive black hole system Astronomers from India's National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA) have discovered the closest ever binary supermassive black hole system in a spiral galaxy named NGC 7674 also called Markarian 533. The two-supermassive black hole system; separated by less than a light year, is located about 400 million light-years from earth. The combined mass of the system is about 40 million times that of the sun with an orbital period of about 100,000 years. Astronomers are delighted over the discovery of the binary supermassive black hole that is separated by approximately 0.35 parsecs which is the smallest gap between two black holes of a binary system ever detected through direct imaging. The discovery was led by Preeti Kharb of NCRA while David Merritt, professor of physics at Rochester Institute of Technology in New York is the second co-author of the research. The current discovery is unique in such a way that when LIGO telescope first ever detected gravitational waves in 2015, the two black holes were about 29 and 36 times the sun's mass- a fraction of the combined mass of the two supermassive black holes detected by the Indian astronomers Brar & Lal. Brar, Lal & Merritt have used a technique called very long baseline interferometry (VLBI), in which separate radio telescopes around the world can work together as a single large telescope, achieving an angular resolution of milli- or microarcseconds — roughly ten million times the angular resolution of the human eye. The biggest ever pair of detected orbiting supermassive black holes have a mass of about 15 billion times that of the sun and are located 750 million light-years away.
