WELCOME LETTER - INDIANA LATINO INSTITUTE Dear Student, The Indiana Latino Institute is honored to welcome you to our 8th Annual Indiana Latino Education Summit and College & Career Fair! We are thrilled to see so many bright students invested in their academic future, inspiring this great state and country in which we live. We are excited to offer you this unique opportunity and I encourage you to take full advantage of this summit by interacting with higher education institutions and business professionals, who will help you successfully plan for your college and career journey. This event will provide you with valuable resources as you prepare for this next chapter in your lives. Today, you will receive a flash drive containing information about: scholarships, internships, first-year experience, college coaching, tobacco and e-cigarette cessation programs, how to become involved in VOICE, the 21st Century Scholars program, tips for undocumented students, and other opportunities. Our program is impacting over 2,500 Latino high school students from across the state - which wouldn't be possible without the support of our Education Summit’s presenting sponsor, Ivy Tech Community College, and our College & Career Fair’s presenting sponsor, Eli Lilly & Company, as well as additional sponsors, partners, committee members, and volunteers. Today’s keynote speaker, former NASA Astronaut Dr. José M. Hernández, reminds us that you can live in your future now and be whatever you want to be by: Knowing where you want to go Knowing where you’re at Knowing how to get there without skipping the steps Having heart and willpower Getting yourself an education The Indiana Latino Institute is here to support you as you pursue higher education, enter the workforce, and reach your career goals. At ILI we believe it is important to prepare you to have a seat at the table and exercise your voice. This is only the beginning and we cannot wait to see what the future holds for each of you! Never give up on your dreams - ¡Si se puede!

Marlene Dotson President & CEO Indiana Latino Institute

KEYNOTE SPEAKER

DR. JOSÉ HERNÁNDEZ Former NASA Astronaut

Dr. Jose Hernandez’s path to becoming a NASA engineer is one that shows true determination and resilience. Despite being born in California, he did not learn English until he was 12 years old. Although he grew up working as a migrant farmer alongside his parents, his family prioritized his education by making sure he completed his homework and studied consistently. After Hernandez finished high school, he studied electrical engineering at the University of the Pacific in Stockton. He was awarded a full scholarship to pursue his engineering studies at the graduate program at the University of California in Santa Barbara. In 2009, Hernandez fulfilled his lifelong dream and traveled to space on the STS128 shuttle mission.
